So while visiting NM we were looking for some authentic Mexican food and on our search this restaurant popped up on our search bar that was only a couple of minutes away from our stop at the local Walmart. And they did not disappoint. Small hole in the wall ,nothing fancy but the old school diner type feel. Pretty wide selection of options to choose from. Service was good and we felt welcome. Kinda seemed like alot if regulars were coming in and out and some gentleman seemed to be chatting it up amongst each other enjoying thier breakfast and coffee with no one rushing them out. Tortillas? Geez straight out of the kitchen and yes when I asked for more I had to wait a couple of minutes because they were in the process of making more, worth the wait! In Santa Fe, hungry, want to avoid peak traffic & love Mexican food. Sounds like a perfect reason to stop here. Buried in a non-descript strip mall we found the door and entered. Another bonus it's a hole in the wall. Grabbed a table and our server shows up with menus & chips and salsa. Lots to choose from on the menu. I zero in on the chimichanga, with the carne adovada plate. Our food came out in no time. The Chimi was huge - simple ingredients: meat & tortilla. Red on the side - nicely hot, but lacking that smoky flavor. In additions to the usual staples on the plate there was an excellent pico de gallo. Arguably the best I've had since leaving TX and better than some I've had there. The carne adovada plate had a generous amount of meat immersed in the red sauce. The pork was tender and shredded easily. Not a fan of the flour tortilla that came with it. It was the thick cakey type. The sopapilla that came with mine was huge - light & soft with flaky exterior. The restaurant was clean. There was indoor and outdoor seating. Parking was right outside the door. Staff were great. Prices were reasonable. The sopapillas were yummy. The chile cheese fries were ok. My hubby usually gets his grub on when it comes to fries but after the first one he tried, he wasn't interested. He got fajitas and said they were ok. This hidden gem is tucked away in a seedy little strip of shops - a strip that was right behind our hotel the whole time we were in Santa Fe. Luckily I didn't find out about this until towards the end of our time in town. It made for the perfect last dinner here. The place is very no-frills and old school. It seems to be a family-run operation. They hustle out great food to a definite blue-collar clientele. Of course I ordered the blue corn cheese enchiladas Christmas-style. That style, for those of you who don't know, is when you have both red and green chile on top of separate sides of your order. This helps those of us who are either undecided on a preference, or for those who have no preference and want the variety. On this meal, the green chile was a narrow winner. We had a couple of cold beers with our meal and enjoyed every bite. On a side note, the dishes come with a side of pozole, which I had never seen done before. Was really close to my hotel and I saw nothing but good reviews for this place so El Comal it was. First off the place was in a not so nice looking area of town, but I know not to judge a book by its cover.. The place was a small cafe and busy around 11 am. I glanced at the menu and the papas rancheros caught my eye. I love potatoes and I love huevos rancheros so them being together is magic. Plate arrived fairly quickly and I marveled at the delicious Mexican food placed in front of me. The green chile was topped over the potato's and the eggs on top of the Chile. OMG so delicious and not so spicy but enough heat. I was not surprised at how good the food was, considering all the good reviews. And a treat was the sopapillas included with the plate. Found this cafe when our destination restaurant was closed. We do not live in Santa Fe but will make a point of returning to El Comal as often as possible. The small location is in a strip mall on the westside of Cerrillos Road. The food was OUTSTANDING (especially the sopapillas). Our group had chile eaters and no chile eaters, everyone enjoyed their meal. Everyone left with a doggy bag. If sopapillas had any type of holding time, we would have added a dozen to go.
