This place is a gem! Not only is the food so tasty and affordable, their employees are sweet as well. Call in an order and your food is always ready in 10 minutes. My personal favorite dish is their Al Pastor tacos, they got little bits of pineapple in them for a fruity splash of flavor! I'm also a fan or their steak taco salad, and steak chimichanga. They have good portions for the price, and every component of your meal is well seasoned - beans, rice, meat, salsa, all so delicious! I get food from El Coyote at least once a week and every single time I've ordered something from here, they haven't let me down. This place makes delicious, cheap, and filling food that satisfies my rather constant cravings for Mexican food. The Chimichanga here is really, really delicious. It is a generously sized burrito with a heap of guacamole and sour cream liberally drizzled on the top. Out of everything that I've tried here, I would have to say that this is my favorite. However, the Chorizo Nachos are a very, very close second. If you're a hungry person like myself, I'd recommend getting both and sharing some of the nachos since everyone loves nachos :) The tacos are also excellent and pack a whole bunch of flavor in each bite. El Coyote also has really yummy hot sauce so I'd recommend to ask them for a bunch before leaving! It goes really well with their rice as well. This is for the burrito only. The poor review is for the fact that I ordered mine with no lettuce. Lo and behold, when I got home and bit into it, there was plenty of lettuce, which pretty much ruins a burrito for me. I'm of the firm belief that lettuce belongs nowhere near a burrito. I picked out what I could, but it was impossible to get out all the small pieces. They should also put in more pico de gallo and sour cream, as there wasn't much of either. If you like black beans in your burrito like me, this also isn't the spot for you as they don't carry them. I will say that the carnitas was quite flavorful, but I don't think I'd order a burrito from El Coyote again. Even without the lettuce, I'd give their burrito about a 6/10. I'm looking forward to going back and trying their tacos, however, as I've heard good things about them and imagine their carnitas tacos must be quite good. read more

The first time on high commendations from a client who works for the city and knows her taco trucks because she' travels all over Portland metropolitan area and being lovely Latina, I took her advice. The first visit was 2 large fish tacos $4.50+50cents for using my card. Best 5 bucks I ever spent. The second visit I drove 15 minute from work to get more tacos...This time 2 large fish and 1 carnitas. Santa Cruz now has the second best carnitas in Portland. And El Leon is 3rd. I'd be there right now but it's Sunday and I appreciate places taking Sunday off the be with family and to recuperate. For the past year, I've been taking myself on a neighborhood tour a la tacos y burritos because the apocalypse requires salsa and the food doesn't judge if you suddenly burst into tears. My gf got the Macado burrito and I got the breakfast burrito with carnitas (yes, you can do this) and y'all didn't let us down. My gf was making sensual noises at her burrito until she tried mine and agreed that yes, I won this round of menu royale. The carnitas on mine were crispy on the edges and perfectly salty. These are hands down the best carnitas I've ever had, and I just moved from Austin. The eggs on both of us were fried(!) and were tucked in like they were being read a bedtime story. Breakfast burritos usually come with half-hearted scrambled eggs but these eggs were not ashamed to die and were the backbone to the other flavors. The salsa verde was a perfect accompaniment to my burrito and the salsa roja was the spicy siren of my gf's heart as she chowed down. The burritos had that nice browning on the outside that shows the kiss of the grill and were well mixed (none of that sad two-faced dr. rice mr. beans sitch). Per other reviewers' recommendations, we also got a side of fries-- the seasoning on these crinkly boys was a little smoky and tart and yet another delicious carb amongst the feast. Their chips and salsa are worth getting. The chips had the same seasoning as the fries and the salsa was incredibly fresh with a little heat on the backend to remind you who's boss. The onions and tomatoes in the salsa were pickled by the salsa, so the big chunks could grab onto the chips and not smack you in the face with their raw dog power. Huaraches with marinated pork= thick gummy corn tortilla and an oddly-textured meat (not exactly chewy, not exactly grisly, but kind of also gummy).
