I have eaten at El Dorado Kitchen a few times but when I took friends there for lunch on Labor Day I was quite disappointed. They had changed the menu the day before so the fish tacos we wanted were not available. I ordered the crab salad and it was sooooo salty it could barely be eaten. After our food was dropped off no one ever came to check on us and when we were ready to leave we had to flag down a runner and ask for our check. EDK is not what it used to be. read more

I wish wish wish I could have rated this a 4.5, but no can-do. First, I'll just explain the two down-sides. 1.) We had a reservation at 8:30pm and arrived about 5 minutes early. We checked in and the hostess explained that a few tables were having dessert so it would only be a few minutes. Well, by the time 8:55pm rolled around, they were done. Only problem I had with this was the hostess never explained in that 30 minute span what the deal was. It unnerved me quite a bit. 2.) The potatoes/bacon gratin that came with my boyfriend's beef tenderloin were really off-putting; they honestly tasted as if they were slathered in BBQ sauce. They were cooked to perfection, but he barely touched them. I did go into quite a lot of detail pertaining to the two whole downsides, but believe me, they were miniscule in comparison to the positives. Our waitress was very friendly and explained the specials very close to us, as the restaurant is very loud. The soup of the day, a Potato Leek with Arugula puree and Garlic chips was to. die. for, albeit maybe slightly too cooled off for my tastes, though I lend that to a cold bowl. The wine selection is as expected ridiculous. So many choices but I eventually went with a glass of Ghost Tree's "Lady In Lace" Zin, which was a surprise every sip. Totally perfect. I ordered the dinner special: Pheasant Leg on a bed of Corn, some braised greens and au jus with a generous addition of black truffles. This was not something I would usually order, in fact I was nearly dead set on the Monkfish, as I love monkfish and rarely have seen it in restaurants; but a reviewer down this page stated their's was oversalted, which made me wary. Though, when I heard "truffles" come out of the waitress' mouth, I was sold. The leg was cooked to perfection and the corn/greens/truffle jus were so surprising in how well they complimented each other, I almost licked the plate when I was done. I tried my boyfriend's tenderloin, which was cooked medium-rare (duh!) and as expected, was PERFECT. And not just the meat, but the seasoning was spot on. I think it made up for the aforementioned potatoes. The ambience of this restaurant is lovely. Perfectly lit, tables not too close together and the open kitchen is always a treat; also, the chefs looked happy to be there! Altogether it was a great experience and I would absolutely recommend a visit. read more

First night in Sonoma my sister and I ate here. The restaurant is beautiful. I had squash soup which was very good. We split the Fettuccine "Carbonara" which had Bacon lardons, chanterelles, Brussels sprouts, parmesan, poached egg on top. I did not think this dish was very tasty. The best truffle fries I have ever had! My two friends and I also had the most delicious, fresh, raw oysters and heirloom tomato salad. I've had their fish and pork tacos before, which are undoubtedly the best earth can offer. Their occasional special of lamb the ways is also just amazing. Nothing disappoints here! Sit on the patio on a warm night for a lovely experience, though their indoor ambience is wonderful and warm as well. read more

Here are my thoughts on a $350 lunch: When the birthday girl makes reservations and requests a table outside, have it ready. Don't tell waiting guests that you prepared one inside. When a guest arrives wearing black, offer her a black napkin (yes, they have them) so her skirt doesn't end up with white lint. Please make sure your shrimp for the shrimp starter entree is fresh. When a child is involved in the group, don't make your guests wait 45 minutes to order, then another 45 for the food. Besides, you want to turn over that table to more guests who will spend an insane amount of money for lunch, right? Yes, you are Sonoma. But, service is service and I'm going to let you off the hook for the portion size/cost ration because of your affluent location. If a guest orders an entree that comes with French fries (and I'm not talking about the truffle fries) don't make them ask for catsup. Whatever the disconnect is between the chef and the waiter (see a previously low scored review by another Yelper) get over it. Our lamb burger entree was delayed because it was 'over-cooked.' V2 was tar tar. It went back too. When it returned, with fries you guessed it: no catsup. I'm fine with the burrata, or as I like to call it, 'do it yourself bruschetta' but my first plate came with a long black hair tucked in between 2 of the 4 crostini. I've been a waitress, I didn't panic or make a scene but simply asked for new bread. I was kindly made another plate but with smaller crostini than were originally served. The proportions for this starter are way off. Bread is cheap - please don't make me ask for more when I have half a loaf of cheese left on my plate. We've eaten here before, and had some great meals. I thought maybe today was an off day for a new server but the lower reviews seem to have happened in the last 4 months. Hopefully they'll pay attention. read more

Brought the in-laws and family here for a late Sonoma lunch. I pushed the reservation several times with no problems, and when we sat down, we were incredibly happy with the service AND the food the entire time. I am definitely marking El Dorado Kitchen as a must stop for my regular Sonoma wine tasting trips. Finally, when the bill came, it was so very reasonable for the level of service, food AND location. My husband and I ate here Saturday night and came down with a horrific case of food poisoning afterwards. We are convinced that it must have been the oysters because we overheard the waiter tell the table next to us (after we had already eaten our oysters) that they were getting new oysters in tomorrow. So I guess they were serving less than fresh oysters to us. My husband had the duck entree and he said it was mediocre. I had the seafood paella, which was good, but not great. The entrees were certainly not worth the food poisoning from the oysters. Will not return. Honestly, we wouldn't have tried it in the first place but our favorite restaurant from previous Sonoma trips, Meritage, has closed. read more

since everyone in our wine-tasting group was unfamiliar with the sonoma-napa area we just decided to come here via word-of-mouth and reviews from the free booklets at the hotel. their cheese appetizer plate was really good with dates and other spreads. their food... was.. so-so. it didn't leave an impression on me and i thought it was rather bland. drinks were not fantastic either. not that many restaurants to choose from in sonoma square.. but the one across the street (girl & the fig) seemed more intimate and fun. read more

I Highly recommend this place, as an alternative to the Girl and the Fig (my hands down fave restaurant in wine country). The Beef Filet was perfect and The Apricot Torte was probably among the top five desserts I've EVER had- and that's coming from a chocoholic. Surprisingly enjoyed my dinner here more than my dinner across the street at TG&TF, which is otherwise one of my favorite places (or more specifically, patios). The layout here is very airy and open and lodge-like. I can't say that I usually like places with this kind of style, but there was a more modern edge to it that made it enjoyable and not stodgy. Interesting to see the communal table in the center, so popular here in Chicago. We started with the cheese tasting that offered all of the cheeses, had the bacon wrapped pork main-course. Nothing stood out as spectacular, but everything was solid. The small item that put the meal over the top were the truffle fries. Delicious and addictive, we had to force ourselves to stop eating them as the portion in this case was huge. Stuck with just a 1/2 bottle of wine since we were both running the half-marathon the next morning - always appreciate that option on the menu. Unfortunately it wasn't so memorable that I even remember what it was... oh well! All in all, I thought this was a great and relaxing place to dine downtown, and I'd gladly return. read more

Went to this restaurant for a wedding rehearsal dinner. Bar had a great atmosphere and friendly/quick bartenders. They were willing to help me find a wine that I would like. The dinner was good and servers were accommodating to adjust the meal so I could eat it (gluten free, corn free food). I wouldnt eat here if i was ultra hungry or anything, since the food portions are tiny, but they are DELICIOUS. I had the bouillabaisse and my hubby had the kobe beef. Both were superb in flavor and presentation, BUT we still had to go eat fast food after because we were still sooo hungry!! :) The mint mojito and northwest coffee on the drink menu is very great and highly recommended. I also recommend making a reservation because we didnt and ended up having to sit in the tiny lounge area- and eating dinner on that side is not that great. Walked into EDK on a Monday night, great atmosphere - casual trendy. Prices were decent for wine country. We weren't all too hungry so we had a few appetizers; bone marrow, lamb sausage and ham (something), fried vegetables. The bone marrow was delicious and came out on a bed of salt crystals which was a great presenation. They make their own sausages so we had to try them we had the lamb sausage and a ham mixture both were very tasty. Lastly we had the fried vegetable, what's better for someone who still doesn't like vegetables? They were ligthly tempura battered and not overly greasy. We ended the night a little too full for dessert but completel satisfied with what we did have. Next time I'm in Sonoma I would definetly go back but this time for an entree and the full dining experience. read more

Came here tonight with 8 of my friends. We got off of a limo wine tour. Before being able to order anything, the manager came over and told us we weren't allowed to order alcohol. In a group of 9, we have moms, teachers, etc. but yet because we all came in laughing and happy to be together, the manager said he got complaints. We were there less than 10 minutes. We were judged. I organized a bachelorette party here with Angie (their events director) and was very pleased with how I was treated. Angie made me feel like our party was very special, only to show up and see that 2 other bachelorette parties and a wedding were happening in the same night. We had a private cabana, custom printed menu, and the food was delicious! All the ladies were very happy with the service and the food. My husband and I hosted a long lost friend here on 08/14/2010 with good results. We were all in the restaurant industry for some time and as such, can be alternately easy and tough to please. We are very forgiving when an understandable problem arises but not very patient when there is an obvious mistake and little energy expended on correcting it. With that being said, we did enjoy our experience at this restaurant. We had the oysters and 'head on' prawns as a starter. The oysters were perfect. Clearly very fresh and so flavorful. The 'head on' prawns were already beheaded. Plus they were a bit over cooked making them a little chewy. We also had the chicharones which were just ok. We ended up salting them quite a bit which helped. The salad that is served with them however, is phenomenal. I had the pork chop as my entree and had specificaly asked them to under cook it as I really don't like my meat anything more than medium rare. The meat was very good. I really appreciated that my husband (who had the same thing but did not specify a cooking temp) had a chop that was actually a bit more done. Our friend had the steak and did enjoy that as well. We ordered the ice cream sandwiches for dessert and weren't as impressed with those. The dish just wasn't very flavorful on the whole. Even with the sauces. The service was very attentive without being at all stuffy or overly formal. Overall, we did enjoy our experience there and would go back again. I would prefer to be able to give it 3.5 stars. There were some things that brought it down like the prawns and dessert but there were a lot of really good things too like the pork chop and the service. I marked it as not being good for kids as it just didn't seem like the kind of environment where kids running around and makiing a mess with bread or crackers was a good idea for either the staff or the other patrons. read more

Really impressive list of wine options both by the glass and by the bottle, with a good balance of both local and old world wines.
