Food is outstanding. I missing gem due to the location but you definitely need to go!

My son and I traveled down from the Bay Area to photograph the Cotton Belt train which ends right at the historic train depot where El Epazote restaurant resides. The restaurant was spacious and comfortable. The food was delicious, I had a pork dish with chili verde which was excellent. My son had a chicken burrito which he enjoyed and gave a big thumbs up. The staff were very nice. 'Cash Only', sign at the front door is still in place which was not a problem for us. My only suggestion for the owners is to consider having some soft background music playing. read more

Cash only right now, their credit card machine's down. Complimentary chips and spicy salsa. Got a bistec ranchero at the proprietor's suggestion. Delicious! I even liked the beans, and I'm usually ambivalent towards beans. Chips, salsa, and tortilla refills were offered throughout the meal. Portion is generous, as with most Mexican restaurants. Went last Saturday for a bowl of Pozole ,a bowl of caldo de rez and a bowl of menudo then ordered a side of scrambled eggs and a cheese quesadilla for kids and it was pretty pricey each bowl is $18 so for three bowls of caldo should of been $ 54 and eggs and quesadilla shouldn't be that much three cans of sodas all came to $ 100 I got 4 small pieces of meat in my caldo de rez and a tiny piece of corn , they do need to work on the smell they got going in in there place. Was looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant and came across this place. Thought I'd support my local business. Worst mistake, not only did I find a long piece of hair in my food but when I walked in I was getting stares and some employee even walked away so they wouldn't help me. I'm not sure if someone is living in the restaurant but it sure does smell like a teenagers room and smelling that on an empty stomach hurt quite a lot. Tacos= Mole= Rice= Beans= Water= gave bottled water instead of cups. I'm not a fan of use of plastic. Otherwise it wouldn't bother me. I would go back with my own water bottle. read more

Never going back to this place looks like the owner lives in the restaurant smells like when someone lives there not like a restaurant should smell. I will's definitely have OSHA check this out . I am really picky when it comes to menudo. Some restaurants do not prepare the tripe or clean it properly, resulting in bad menudo. I haven't eaten menudo in a long time, because I cannot seem to find a place that knows how to prepare menudo. While visiting family, we came to this place. Stopped here after hiking in Pinnacle. Great spot with awesome flavors. The location is off the beaten path, but worth the trip. Good variety of beers and great spices. Would definitely stop again if coming through Hollister. read more

I've been here a handful of times. A couple times at their old location and a couple times at this new location. Since it's taco day I ordered the asada tacos with beans and rice. So, I work for a company that sells pavingstones and there is a manufacturer plant in Hollister. One of the drivers of the company took me to see the plant. But you know coming from San Jose to Hollister in a semi gets you hungry. I looked into taquerias in Hollister and found this one with such an original name. I know what the Epazote is and love the taste. SO as original as the name the food talks wonders about this people's origins. I LOVE their food. Nowadays evrytime I send a customer to pick up some material to the paver plant I advice them to go eat at the El Epazote Taqueria. Very good service anf friendly family owned business. Try thier Mole it's muy bueno. read more

This place is fantastic! Great fresh and hot food! The salsa with chips had a great kick of spice. And they had jarritos! We ordered up the Chile verde and chicken enchiladas. It was a lot of food for us so plenty for left overs tomorrow! It's a little dark on the outside but don't let that scare you away! Just make sure to look for the lights with the name of the Resturant! The owner was great, great service and quick! Definitely looking forward to coming back. read more

Clean, awesome with a very rasquache atmosphere. Honestly, it feels like I'm having one of my tias or something making the burrito. You can tell that the family takes pride in their restaurant. The service is excellent and the food is really the best in town. There are a LOT of Mexican places in town, including the elusive "super taq" (yuck), and Epazote takes the cake. My husband always orders the chile verde plate(and even though I'm partial on meat, I've tasted it and it's AMAZING), and I get a vegetarian burrito. The nice thing is they will make it however you want it, I like lots of lettuce and tomatoes, and they do it - no probs. I've sent a couple of my colleagues there and they've had an equally good experience. Yay! AND I LOVE THE QUARTER MACHINES. I'm collecting all of the little farm animals at the moment. :D read more

This affordable, "home-made" tasting Mexican restaurant is located in the old Hollister railroad depot behind the tomato cannery warehouses. It is operating by a husband/wife team and they really do a nice job. The food is very tasty and there service is very fast for those looking for a lunch on the-go. They also do take-out orders. My husband and I love to find hidden gems of restaurants. We had seen and talked about this place and tonight finally decided to give it a try. It is tucked away in a rustic wooden building near the train tracks, so maybe a little hard to find, but worth it. This place is small, kinda reminds you of restaurants in Mexico. The owners are very friendly, prompt and attentive, as other reviewers mentioned. First impressions about the quality of a Mexican restaurant for me are about the chips and salsa. Both were great. I had the pozole and my husband had the chile relleno. Both were excellent. They gave me a shaker with Mexican oregano and dried chiles I could shake on my soup. It really added to the flavor profile. The chile relleno had a fresh, yet smokey flavor to it which was so nice. Also, they serve black beans which are really tasty...beats the watered down tasteless soupy pinto beans you get at other places. We definitely will return! read more

Out in the edge of town by warehouses and railroad tracks waits the little restaurant that could. Second location and nice space. Chile rellenos were delicious. Good sauce and runny melted cheese. Found this restaurant on Yelp. It was a Sunday about 5:30, and we were the only customers there. A party of four. Didn't know what to expect, but our waiter was also the owner. His Wife is the cook. Their menudo is great! It's cleaned right (doesn't smell) and it taste great. The coctel de camaron is really good. My husband loved the pupusas revueltas (beans, cheese & chicharon). All the food has a homemade taste to it, so don't expect more. They have a big selection on latin american drinks and the service is good. We went in early at the beginning of this business opening because we think it's important to support our small town's businesses. However I'm sorry to post that the food was TERRIBLE! I found a really long black hair in my taco which obviously came from the young woman in the kitchen that did NOT have a hair net on! My BF's burrito had very undercooked/raw?! chicken. There was not another customer in the large dining room. The lettuce was cheap, limp ice berg far past it's prime. Tomatoes were tasteless. Chips were like cheapest brand you could buy at supermarket & stale! We think the salsa was made there (??) and found it decently spicy...Only sold canned beverages at that time. Service was friendly. However that was NOT enough to let us be able to recommend this restaurant. Maybe we should have gone back in to let the owner know but our experience was just too horrible that we felt uncomfortable even going back in for that discussion!
