This was our third time here and I guess the third time is a charm. We had a remarkably good experience. Our waitress, Ilda, was working the entire main room by herself as the management sent everyone else on break at the same time. She was really hustling. Despite the lack of help she did a great job. She steered me to the fish tacos, which were excellent; really, really good. Those alone are worth a return. The fish was cooked perfectly and I got fresh avocado, not brown or old. The wife got the combo fajitas and really like them. The beef was tender and the chicken was flavorful. The only drawback was a stack of oldish tortillas, but Ilda brought us fresh and everything was good. I did not like the queso so much but after the wife added the complimentary salsa she liked it. The chips remain fresh, crispy, and not greasy. Salsa is excellent. My first review of this place was 2 stars, second review was 3 stars, and this review is 4 stars. How to explain? Maybe we ordered incorrectly on the first couple of times, maybe they were having a bad cook day, or maybe I am getting used to the menu. (Fourth variant, which I reject, is that my standards are going down). Last variant is that my assessment improves as the number of margaritas consumed goes up. A definite possibility. Good but not great. We came in to see if our new local El Fenix was up to snuff. The restaurant was a little dirty. The booths looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a while. The tables need a good wipe down. The lighting is a bit brighter than what I remember. All of us ordered frozen margaritas which left something to be desired. These obviously came from a mix, they tasted more like Gatorade than lime juice. I would have had two if they were better, but they weren't. Womp. Next, all of us had the enchilada special (Wednesday nights). The cheese enchiladas looked wimpy compared to the chicken enchilada. Tex-Mex food is the greatest creation that Texas has had. Besides all the technology, medical, and scientific stuff of course. I went here with some co-workers and it was super busy for lunch. We were promptly seated and food came out really fast. We ordered several of their lunch specials, while I ordered the Beef Fajitas for myself! I always enjoy the most beautiful sound in the world, the crackling and sizzling of the fajita plate when coming from the kitchen, straight to my table! Voila! My steak was cooked perfectly and my plate came sizzling hot with veggies and sides to go with it. They give you a very a generous amount of guacamole and sour cream on the side, so I was able to make some damn good fajitas! The onions came overcooked on the fajita plate beforehand and were very mushy, but the peppers on the sizzling plate were cooked to perfection. My husband and I have been coming here for years. We love the enchilada special night on Wednesdays. Now I'm not one to complain but recently the margaritas taste like 100% mixer. We have to order extra SHOTS of tequila to make them drinkable. I never have this problem downtown or in Plano. Took my Aunt from out of state here last night 5/13/19. We got there before 7pm, we waited 13 min before we even got asked for drinks. I wanted a happy hour and the waiter went on to tell me it was over. Well if I wouldn't have waited for someone it would've been not over. Already starting not so good. Ordered food, I ordered Pollo a la Parilla. 1st I've had this before at a different location was perfect. This location was kind of burnt and was dry, I ate it cause our waiter was already been kind of weird. My daughters food was also dry and not too good. My Aunts hers was okay and my moms she didn't like it and didn't want to turn it back in cause we already waited some time. We just wanted to get out of there. Although I've lived in the neighborhood for 32+ years, I've never visited this restaurant before. After visiting a location in Waxahachie last month, I decided to give it a try. The other location was bright and airy with high ceilings. This one was darker with low ceilings, but that's okay. When I think El Fenix I think of old school Mexican meals with my parents back in the 1970's. I had intended to get the 'make your own combo' special with two beef enchiladas and a crispy beef taco, but it was the weekend, so that wasn't available. No problem, because past experience told me that I always eat the taco first, can't finish both enchiladas, put a dent in the rice, but barely touch the beans. The service was quick and accommodating, but every time the server addressed me as "senor" I felt a bit self-conscious. I'll be back whenever I need a helping of pure comfort food. read more

If you want upscale mexican, there are other places, but if you want classic Dallas Tex Mex, El Fenix is the place. The food and service was most excellent. At our table- We were waited on promptly and our order came fast. We did have to order more salsa and once we finished the chips we were not given more or asked if we wanted more. I love your chips and salsa so it would have been nice to have a few more chips. I instantly fell in love with the salsa, fresh, cold and delicious! I can't handle spicy salsa and I LOVE finding salsa I can't eat more than a few bites! Reviews were spot on with the salsa recommendation! Queso-we got the roasted-not my fave. Too spicy and just wasn't very good. Too thick and they tried to put too many ingredients in it. Fajitas-so good! We got for two, perfect sizing. I hate when places don't give you much chicken when you get them for "two"...veggies were great, some too thick cut and didn't cook down much but that happens...still loved them! Horrible take out service. They screwed up my order and didn't really seem to care. Hiring young high schoolers that put the blame on everyone else including me. They were trying to cover up to manager and get away with it. Manager didn't say one word to us.. Asked for extra salsa, got no salsa. Got home and realized it. So had to drive back up and they watered down the salsa, so it was watery. They still got it wrong. Little do they realize my family and I would eat here, but no longer! My brother and I continue to come here because it was, years ago the most loved Mexican Restaurant around. We grew up eating here... and have always loved it. I'm not sure what has happened over time, but the food is just not the same. The chips as always are superb, most of the food is good but not as amazing as it used to be. My brother ordered the plate that has enchiladas and a tamale a few months ago and realized when we were leaving that the cooks had forgotten to put a tamale on the plate. This has created an on going joke between us now. That day and every time we go back since then I ask for a "spicy" salsa for the chips because the salsa they give you with the chips has no heat at all. I usually get that spicy salsa when I ask and mix the 2 together then its ok. Today we had lunch there. I asked the waitress for a spicy salsa and she told me.. "We don't have a spicy salsa, This is all we have." Disappointment!! I did manage to compensate what I had though by mixing in the Pico de Gallo from my plate, salt and pepper. But still disappointed. I ordered the Chicken Chimichanga... again disappointed. It was more like a big, fat bean and rice burrito with a few bites of chicken all at one end and it was most certainly not fried! It was a plain soft tortilla that was filled and smothered in Queso. Gooey. I miss the old El Fenix! I miss the salsa that was hot and flavorful. Like you get in the jars!! The El Fenix Salsa in a jar has a nice heat to it. But not what they serve at the restaurant - bland diced tomatoes in juice. I'm sure we'll be back.. that's just the way we are. We grew up with it... Food is so-so but service, or lack of, is what earned them only 1 star. We stopped by tonight to get take-out. Store offers Curbside pick up and cashier said she would bring our food out when it was ready. I added a tip because that was a nice offer considering the COVID-19 situation. We went out to the car and waited, and waited, and waited.. while other customers went in and came out with food. Finally we went in and the food was sitting there waiting. Carne Asada was super dry, my husband and I ordered a Top Shelf margarita and a 1918 margarita... both tasted like just margarita mix with a LOT of lime juice, we couldn't even sip on it without getting a reflex puckered "sour face"... i guess it would've been better if our waitress cared at all to ask or listen... she was nowhere to be found except to take the order and to bring our bill at the end. Food is always good. I mean, it's El Fenix, the cradle of Tex Mex. It will always be good. Not always great or fantastic, but good. And for those who think they are too high brow for El Fenix--that the heavy taste of cumin will soil their delicate pallet...suck it. This IS real Tex Mex.
