' Best Tortilla Chips Ever " We visited the El Fenix Mexican Restaurant last week in Fort Worth Texas and had a great experience ! The staff was so friendly and Nice. Johnny one of the employees even sang a song at the table for us. He had a great voice. The food we had, from the pork tacos, to the Chili Rellenos , to the Cheese Enchiladas, to the Chicken Fajitas, was all very good and tasty. The Dessert Sopapillas were Huge, and some of the best we have ever tasted. But the best item for us, believe it or not, was the Tortilla Chips with Salsa. Coming from San Diego where we have thousands of Mexican restaurants, my wife and I have tasted a lot of Tortilla Chips, But these at El Fenix were the most unique tasting and delicious chips, we have ever had. The process to make these chips is a Martniez family secret and tradition since 1918. The chips are baked in a special process first, then fried which gives them a delicious flavor as each chip melts in your mouth. They are not hard, and not soft, but are a crispy melt in your mouth very unique Chip. We had four extra bowls of chips, they were so good ! Sad excuse for Tex Mex food. I was never impressed by the El Fenix in downtown Dallas, but that location is definitely better than this one. Chips and salsa were bland. Best tex-mex we have had. The fresh guacamole is awesome. The enchiladas have some weird cheese sauce, tastes ok, but the carne sauce on top is great. This is a place where you can consistently get decent Tex-Mex. The food is not remarkable, but you get the usual enchilada, tacos, beans, rice, etc. The service is spotty. They're nice enough people. If you want some Tex-Mex in a restaurant environment, this is the place. We had the lemon ice box cake to go. It melted into about 3 tablespoons worth of a sweet crunchy blob by the time we got home. LOL! The lemon ice box cake is definitely not a " to go" item on the menu! Like I said, the food isn't horrible. It's just average. I guess the mixed drinks encourage a hearty appetite. The do have a good menu with lots to choose from. The only "bad" thing I can say about the place is they definitely seem a little strained with their waitresses and waiters. I think they may have been short handed. You'll get the "Everything OK?" as they pass you by without refilling your drink. They're not unpleasant. They just appear to be overwhelmed. Have eaten at El Fenix for many years but probably my last trip. Not crowded yet waited 15 minutes to be waited on. Waited another 35 minutes for the food you see above. That picture was taken just as it was served. Not edible. I sent mine be back and didn't order anything else since we had been there an hour at this point. To add insult to injury, waited another 20 minutes for ticket to pay for drinks and he buys dinner. Ridiculous! read more

There was a while where we really didn't come here very often because of a few bad experiences. The last couple of times we have come, it has been better, although there are definitely better Mexican restaurants in the area. My wife and I both ate off of the "light" menu this time, and it was quite good. I had the tilapia, which had a decent sauce on it, and came with a side of rice and sautéed spinach. The spinach was pretty good with a lot of vegetables in it. The rice was fine, and the sauce for the tilapia was good overall. My wife said the chicken tacos were also quite good, and she liked the vegetables that came with it. We had our youngest with us, and she had a meal off of the kids' meal that was also advertised as healthier. She liked it as well, and it was Tuesday night, which meant a $1.99 kids meal with a free mini sopapilla. The chips were good as always. The salsa is quite average overall. The service we got was fairly good overall, and we only had to wait at the end for the sopapilla, which was explained by them only having one chef working on Tuesday night, and he had gotten behind. read more

The El Fenix on Camp Bowie Boulevard is a Fort Worth institution. It is, truly, where locals go to eat. Tex-Mex at its finest. Fort Worthians may argue about the merits of The Original Mexican Inn or Joe T. Garcia's, but I can truthfully say that I have never met anyone who didn't like El Fenix. Great food and fast service. Note that many of the servers you will see bustling around the room have been with El Fenix for years; decades in some cases. So far as I know, El Fenix invented the Wednesday Night Enchilada Special that is so prevalent here in Fort Worth. It is simply the cheese enchilada dinner, with refried beans and rice, for $6.99 or so. I always ask for extra chopped onions. Years ago this El Fenix burned down. Locals were so mortified at not getting their Wednesday night enchilada 'fix' that other local Mexican restaurants took out large newspaper ads (and even billboards) reminding one and all that they, too, offered specially priced enchilada dinners on Wednesday nights. Fortunately, the El Fenix family/owners (I do not recall their name) quickly rebuilt the restaurant (there was a second El Fenix at the local mall, but it closed down due to a rental dispute or such). Mind, on Wednesday nights the place is packed. Arrive early. I actually recommend anything on the menu, including the salads and soups. As always, when you sit down you will speedily be given a basket of wonderful tortilla chips and bowls of hot sauce. It is a bit noisy inside: when they rebuilt they carefully arranged it so that there was no sound-proofing or noise suppression whatsoever, much like the old place. One of the very few places, in Fort Worth, that truly deserves five stars for consistent, excellent food. read more

What can I say about this place? Basically is that we love it. I have been eating at this restaurant for 40 years. No it's not fancy, no they don't have cutting edge takes on Mexican food. Good Tex-mex. I usually eat there once a week. I've read a few bad reviews and they inspired me to join Yelp and post a comment of my own. The wait staff are very friendly and most strive to give fast and friendly service. I have favorite waiters and waitresses and I always ask for one of them when they are available. I once had a waitress that I had to ask for everything, but most are helpful and friendly. My only complaints are that tortillas are not brought to you unless you ask for them, picante sauce is brought in small containers and often, your food is brought out too quickly....... I like to have a few chips and salsa and enjoy some of my drink before my food arrives. read more

The problem I have with multiple EL Finex locations is the beef. I've given it a fair try at 3 different locations. Each time the taste was very bad and each time I was sick for 3 days afterwards. Once or twice could be random but 3 out of 3 times is not random. That is more than fair on my part. The 3 locations were Camp Bowie in Ft. Worth, Forest Lane in Dallas, and Lemmon Ave in Dallas. Okay so went here after a horrible experience elsewhere and I'm so glad we did! We showed up with a party of 9 and got seated immediately! The people working upfront were so friendly and full of energy. We got to our table and within seconds our server is getting our drink orders and bringing us chips & salsa. Maybe 5-10 later she came back and got our orders (after asking if we were ready of course) and it wasn't long after when we got our food. The food was amazing!! Everything was good and there were absolutely no complaints about anything at our table. I got the fajita combo salad and I had enough for lunch the next day, my husband got one of the burrito & couldn't even eat half of it either! The servings are really good for the price. I've been here many, many times and I'm never disappointed. The chips and salsa are always fresh and taste great. The margaritas are great, I love the swirl. Through out the years, I've eaten just about everything on the menu and I have yet to have a bad experience. Every waitress or waiter I've had has always been very nice so they always receive a great tip. Last Sunday afternoon (Dec. 28) was our first visit to this location and we loved it. The food was excellent and the chips/salsa among the best I've tasted since moving to TX from AZ. Wish I knew the name of our outstanding waiter. He was the best...efficient, friendly, right there if we needed something. Management, if you read this, he was a young Hispanic man with curly black hair and a winning smile. I know this isn't very definitive for a Mexican restaurant, but it's the best I can do! I ordered the fish tacos and they were pathetic - were virtually tasteless and the fish had the look and texture as if it had been microwaved. Very poor experience. New to Fort Worth so decided to try El Fenix. Ordered take out including Fajitas for 2. The folks at El Fenix said "10 minutes". Took over an hour, food was cold, and the Fajitas for 2 included a grand total of 3 tortillas and NO rice and beans. This is the kind of stuff you would expect from Taco Bell.
