This review hurts to write. We used to come here all the time and really enjoyed the food and service, but I can no longer recommend El Gran Tapatio. In the past 90 days I have experienced a severe decline in service, both quality and speed. What used to take 10 minutes now takes 30 minutes or more and with the staff not even being friendly any more, the food isnt worth the wait or the experience. Most of the servers who have been here for years are gone, the new servers are at best mediocre and at worst openly unfriendly. Yesterday we came in for lunch, asked if we were ready to order before we even had menus and when she came back with ONE menu for the two of us, a minute later someone else came by and asked again if we wanted to order. None of this was even said with a smile. It was like we were imposing on them. We ended up leaving immediately and will not be coming back. Now I have to find a new Mexican spot because I refuse to spend my money with a business that acts like they dont want it. We were passing by this restaurant to go to another one, but I saw a sign that said pork chop special. Decided to stop there, once we went in it was packed and very busy, we stood there for several seconds and they a lady said sit where ever you want. We sat by the entrance by the first window on the left side. Our waitress came up soon after we were sent and ask what drink we would like we ask her questions as this is the first time there. Our waitress name is Maryann and she was extremely friendly and so was all the other waitresses. She answered all our questions and we received our drinks really fast. Our food comes out rather quickly and it was all hot, the potion was great and I ask for crispy potato's and they complied it was all great and delicious I don't thin the photos that I have attached makes the food look great but it was. The coffee was hot and good. The tortillas were soft to the end and they tasted so good, hope they keep that person as that is what a tortilla should feel like and taste. I went to the restroom and it smell good and was clean. I recommend this restaurant to everyone as it was the best experience we had. High gloss tables and chairs a little too close together but I'm sure theres a few accessible seating options. The Fideo has steak instead of ground beef. Homemade corn tortillas. I was looking around town for barbacoa tacos-to-go and found this amazing place! We almost got off becuz we heard live music today Sunday but decided to do the drive-thru instead. We ordered the barbacoa mini tacos and horchatas. We werent disappointed! These tacos were sooo good and very filling! They came with a cup of charro beans, chopped white onion and cilantro, red and green salsa, radishes, two slices of lime, slices of cucumbers, small grilled onions, and a grilled jalapeño! Very well served! Even the tacos were double tortilla and w/ lots of barbacoa. The horchata was a large horchata and was delicious too. Very pleased with our order, we paid under $25 for two orders and two horchatas. An employee brought it out to our car and was very nice. Came here for lunch during a conference at a nearby school. When it's Wednesday and the place is packed with locals, thats a good sign! Service was prompt and polite. The chips and salsa/queso were fresh and crispy. I ended up having the a la carte chicken enchiladas. I can't think of another time that I've had better-tasting chicken enchiladas. So I didn't take pictures because that's how hungry we were. I'll start with the food, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the food is was super delicious. What I had a problem with was the cashier, when I get mad it's something to think about. Because i rarely get mad. First thing is they charge you for to-go plates. Never have I ever heard this nonsense. I've been to fancier restaurants and they have never charged me for a to-go plate. I over thought how many to-go plates we needed and had some left over. So being the person I am I kindly took the extra to-go plates back to the cashier. She told me she couldn't give me a refund on my item because she already put it in the register....!? I asked so what do I do with the extra plate. When I say she gave me the worst attitude. I felt like she almost swung at me to grab the to-go plate I was returning. Then she proceeded to grab the tip jar and take out the refund from there. Attitude for what!? We spent about $60 there... like bro come on. I'm defiantly not coming back. Delicious San Antonio TexMex with a Jalisco slant. We stopped here for early dinner before the rodeo and enjoyed it very much. Friendly waitress was trying to learn English and we were trying to practice our Spanish, a funny combination. They have great breakfast and lunch specials on the menu and a large selection of combination plates to choose from. I got the cheese enchiladas and carne guisada combo and was very happy with it. The guisada was tender and flavorful, the enchiladas were great and the side tortillas were fresh and warm. Husband got the green chile chicken enchiladas and said they were great. Child got the kids carne guisada taco plate which came with rice and beans. There was enough to make two tacos with the amount of meat they stuffed in one tortilla. She ate everything. They have margaritas and glass-bottled Mexican sodas, fountain sodas iced tea and beer available. The chips and salsa were good, the small cup of queso was the stuff from a can but it was a little taste of nostalgia so I won't ding them for it. We had a great meal for less than $25. read more
