After arriving in San Antonio we headed to a local Mexican food eatery for chilaquiles, normally a breakfast food. It was 11 am but fortunately still being served at Nichas. When they arrived I dug in. I'm not sure why but they just didn't have the flavor I associate with chilaquiles. I certainly ate it but with a bit of disappointment. My friend got a lighter side luncheon plate which she enjoyed. The environs of the venue are charming and attractive. Bright colors, interesting art work and decor. There is a full bar and several separate eating areas. Service was good and quick and staff was friendly. We were absolutely freezing in the air conditioning and grabbed some jackets from the car. The frigid temps and the adequate but not amazing chilaquiles were the only negatives, and price point was a very inexpensive $25 plus gratuity for both of us. read more

We were in town for a tournament an looking for something that wasn't downtown or on the Riverwalk. We found Nicha's. What a find it was. We walked in later than we usually eat dinner (around. 9:45 PM. Even though they about an hour to close, there was still a relatively large crowd there. We sat at a table in the bar area. Our server was Justin. He was incredible. He gave great recommendations and was prompt, courteous, and had a great personality. We ordered a frozen Paloma and I was told that it was incredibly good The queso was solid. We all tasted each other dishes and I didn't hear one complaint about anyone's food. The Dad's plate with the beef fajita was so good. The beef fajita was some of the best fajita meat I have had. The poblano enchiladas were beyond compare. I make a creamy poblano sauce, but this may have been better. The Burris quesadillas were tender and full of flavor. The Al pastor street tacos were excellent as well. These days, no place you go out is really "cheap." So, if you are paying for dinner out, you really want it to be better than what you would make at home. This place fit the bill with generous portions and high quality food. When we are in town, this will definitely be our go-to spot for TexMex. read more

Nichas what happened? Nichas is my favorite Mexican restaurant and that is where we always go because it's always been consistent in how the food is cooked and it's good. Well yall have changed ! Went there last night and I was as sooo disappointed. Chips have changed and definitely not in a good way. My enchiladas were a bit on the cold side and something was off about them. A staple in San Antonio that I finally had the chance of trying out. Tonight it was very busy however we got a table for 8 people with a reasonable wait time around 30 minutes. Our waiter Jose was very friendly, professional and efficient. Food came out pretty quick and everything tasted amazing. I had the dad's plate which includes two cheese enchiladas, rice, beans and choice of carne guisada, skirt steak or fajitas. I also love that their to go service is just as flawless. They offer chips & salsa when you're seated & their drink menu has a lot of tasty options that hit the spot My family enjoys their fresh corn & flour tortillas, the caldos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, & so much more. Honorable mention: the rice & beans here are fresh & flavorful & the tortillas speak to the soul. Everything comes out hot and plated with love. Eh. It's edible. I would not recommend this for Mexican food in San Antonio. Rice and beans were bland. I had a Mexican plate which was enchiladas, puffy taco, and a chalupa. Chalupa was on a tostada shell like Taco Bell. Puffy taco was just ok. Meat had a decent flavor. Tortilla had some flavor but not the light, crispy texture you want in a puffy taco. This was more like a Gordita. Enchiladas looked good but also lacked flavor. The entire meal was bland. Service was prompt and servers were pleasant but the food was disappointing. read more

I've never had barria before and I'm glad I tried it here first. Had such a warm and wonderful flavor to it. The broth it came with was also good, gave it some extra flavor. I went with the Saltillo plays. One enchilada and one puffy taco. The beans at . One time my mother in law made beans from scratch and I thought those were good, these were so much better. We order from here many times. I love the combo of soup, crispy taco, and chicken flauta which comes with chips for the soup along with a serving of lettuce, tomato and guacamole. For only 13.74 when ordered on (door dash). The sopaipilla were delicious and hot we ordered 3 and found out it comes in the size of pizza boxes so we had a huge serving. 22 Oct 2024 We went and early voted at the Mission Library. Afterwards, we went to Nicha's just across the street. It was pretty crowded at 1:15pm, but we were seated right away. Larger area than it looks like from the outside. The menu is pretty complete with tacos, enchiladas, carnitas, fajitas, burritos and more. We were also given a breakfast menu. The bar looks pretty complete. A margarita delivered to a table next to us looked frosty and delicious. Speaking of frosty, bottled beer comes with a frosted mug. Yum. I had a lunch special for $9.99, two enchiladas rancheros with refried or charro beans, rice and tortillas. The server told me that after 3pm this plate does not come with tortillas. The husband had pork carnitas with rice and black beans. He opted for corn tortillas. I had flour. Both good. My plate was delicious and the husband scarfed his. The salsa served with the chips is on the hot side with plenty of flavor. Our server Yuliana was very nice and helpful, checking on us periodically. A great experience. Go there. read more

Unsure why this place is so highly rated. Maybe it's an SA staple? Idk. The pros first. Place is nice inside, clean. They have tumblers you can purchase which comes with refills for drinks at a lower price. Cons. I was not impressed with the pork carnitas. More than half were all just fat with no meat. They did try and make it right though so they get props for that. Didn't help though as what was brought out was just as fatty. BUT, while I waited for a new batch of the carnitas the rest of the food got cold. The street tacos got no complaints. I did not taste them. I maybe would try it again one more time but definitely not get anything with pork. read more

Upon local recommendation, we cruised over to Nicha's. The service was super fast (we were on a time crunch) and the salsa and queso were worth the trek! Homemade tortillas, yes, please!! I shared the street tacos, they serve 5 but once you take all the fat out you have enough for four. I like my meat sautéed this looked a bit boiled (but don't quote me on that). Definitely get the dads plate because the cheese enchiladas on it are incredible! I never thought I'd feel this way about cheese enchiladas but I wanted to marry them. Fold your carne guisada into a fresh, soft, chewy delicious flour tortilla and get day-tipsy on a chamango. My husband loved his fish tacos and Bloody Mary. Well since San Antonio has a lot of Tex mex I just randomly looked on Google the nearest Mexican restaurant. I didn't want to eat anything too heavy like a fajita and I was leaning more towards Street food and that's more Mexican which is tacos. They said popped up and I just took it for dining in as a chance. It was okay the service was fast. Typical that they use fresh salsa and chips and I had their famous street tacos. I was expecting a lot more meat but I guess for $13.99 since I thought everything was bigger in Texas and the way the picture looked in the menu did not seem to look like it matched what I actually got with my own order. Ambience was very busy and traditional for Tex-Mex with their decor. I was really craving for dessert and for the dessert actually made up for the main dish which I had the Sopapillas. It's almost like a light Bengeit. I was going to go for the churros and ice cream because the other choice but the server Jacob recommended this. The waitress looks dumbfounded, but then still has to ask management what makes the dish vegan. *personal eye rolls* She comes back to say that the dish would be spinach and tortillas. As my partner clarifies again. The waitress agrees. I say, okay no then ask if they can do veggie fajitas. The waitress writes it down as a beef fajitas plate. I requested grilled bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms with all the fixins'. After that ordeal, my partner and I speak amongst ourselves wondering why our waitress acting the way that she was. After a while, the food comes out piping hot on a skillet plate with veggie fajitas, Spanish rice, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and some homemade tortillas. Every thing was delicious and well seasoned even the vegetables. They did forget to add the mushrooms though. Upon receiving the tab, ran into another issue with our check. Our waitress charged a plate of grilled vegetables for a beef plate which is $22. My partner grew this dissatisfied and asked for a price change. Which required the manager. The manager came to our table to ask about the situation. It was explained that I only had veggies. He spoke with the waitress, then changed to bill. Luckily because that was ridiculous beforehand. Really good Tex-Mex here. Experiences in San Antonio go way back to my childhood. Over that period of time, I've had some really good Tex-Mex and some average. This being arguably ground zero for the creation and evolution of that culinary magic known as Tex-Mex, I was thrilled that Nichas delivered an unexpected plate of perfection. LA BANDERA One Cheese enchilada with chili con carne. Straight up yardstick of good Tex Mex and this may have been the best I've ever had. One green enchilada and one Mole chicken enchilada also compete for the best ever. Perfect execution. CHILI RELLENO Prepared in the traditional style found around Texas forever. A poblano stuffed with cheese, just a sniff of thin egg batter and fried. Topped with a simple, nuanced thin tomato sauce. As close to homemade as I've ever tasted. Their Food is always very good & taste freshly made. Their tortilla chips are the very best they are airy & not hard or tasting old taste very fresh. Their Sopapillas are so good & puffy so soft, it's my favorite. They have excellent service & always checking on you making sure you don't need a refill or need something else. While we were visiting San Antonio, I really wanted to get some great Tex-Mex and Nicha's was perfect!!! The chips and salsa were so good, crispy and a little spicy! My first ever Paloma was a surprise! A lemony salt rim, and refreshing mix of Tequila, grapefruit and Fresca! My dinner was seafood tacos: so good! Fish and shrimp, crunchy cabbage and cheese and a sweet creama sauce! I would go back and order this again!!! As others have said, parking is tight, and dinner-time is busy. We ended up ordering two more orders! My fajita plate was WOW! So much food! And so darn flavorful. The ride was also amazing. The fresh tortillas were also so great. Food is good, salsa had a kick, drinks we nice when cups were full but service was a 180. I'm still contemplating whether it was because I asked for the chips and salsa. When sat and placed our drink order, I attempted to get our server 3 times before giving a little holler and asked about chips and salsa that was never offered- again, we made eye contact a few times before but I guess he had a lot going on? When he acknowledged me about the chips and salsa, I was stoked. To then see him wiping down tables lol My inside voice said "wait what happened to chips and salsaaaa I'm hungryyy ". Soon after, my mentality was maybe he prefers not to make eye contact with me... maybe he's more comfortable just talking to the guys. We ordered our food and got my margarita. Once we got our food, we never saw the server again. Sitting in the corner, he was just zooming past us. It wasn't until we were ready to wrap things up when he came by to give the guys their refills... asking if there was anything else. I asked for to go boxes and check, again no eye contact. He comes back with boxes and as my hand extended to grab boxes and he placed on the table. I felt very dismissed throughout dinner. What confirmed my feelings was when we wanted to place an order to go. He literally said "No" when we asked him if he could add a taco to the order and have it reflect the receipt. I got the card device and removed the card and asked him to get the manager. Despite my request, this fella goes back to cleaning. I got up and again asked for the manager. Although I still left gratuity on my ticket, it was clear that I needed to at least bring this incident with the manager and discuss my experience with Mark W. Everything was explained to her, the eye rolls, the delay in service, the disdainful attitude toward me. After I mentioned what I saw and experienced, everyone at my table realized what was going on NO ONE should have to experience anything like this at an establishment that says: Nicha's offers a fun, laidback atmosphere where, when you're dining with us, you're part of our familia. read more
