I know what you're thinking sushi and tacos? OMG, I wish I could go back! This is exactly what we were looking for after a long day at a festival. We were craving sushi, but there was no all you can eat in Tempe, that was late. This place had everything we were looking for from sushi to Mexican food and savory drinks. We ordered a couple rolls, sashimi, nigiri, horchata & Carne Asada fries. The total was $70, we were so sad because it didn't give us an option to tip and we had no cash on us! The guy at the front was super nice. If you're looking to dine in, they have great seating options. We decided to go, it was relatively fast! Their sushi was so fresh! There sashimi were so thick! Order a al pastor burrito, it was mainly a rice burrito, flavor was ok. Also ordered 4 al pastor tacos, talk about small! You should mention that there mini tacos, like some other restaurants. Don't lie to costumer. Way over priced for the miniature taquitos terrible!! read more

I am currently pregnant and had such a craving for a Vegas Roll. I called to see if they could cook the salmon before putting it in the roll so that it was safe to eat, a request that every place I had talked to prior denied. They were so friendly and nice about it, they agreed. It was absolutely delicious, fresh, and just overall a 10/10. Definitely would recommend this place. read more

Wasn't blown away by the food, but I do love their menu options. So maybe we just picked the wrong thing. Quesadilla was soggy even without the consume. The bowl was okay, but I would've preferred it to be bigger for the cost. I could've gone to chipotle for more food and less cost. But we wanted to try something local. read more

Thank you! Been here a few times before and really enjoy the food, it's great!! But they went above and beyond last weekend! I ordered a DoorDash order for the first time ever and the first driver stoled my food! Then the second driver called and told me about it and I had to cancel the order. After my disappointment I called El Jefe again and reordered my food and my husband (who is my original door dasher for us, lol) went and picked up my food. Looking for a spot to satisfy your Sushi and Taco cravings, then I offer you El Jefe. Dine in or pickup, it is all good. We each got the Four Street Tacos (mine with red and hers with green) and split the order up to be one of each protein type. They hit the spot and were the perfect serving size for a light dinner. Was looking for a quick place to eat on the way to the airport. Found this taco shop. My friends and I got a mix of tacos and sushi. We were weary of the sushi initially since this seemed more like a taco shop but my friends said the sushi was good. I got the mix of 4 street tacos and a birria queso taco. I had to have the Vegas Roll again. I'm not much of a sushi connoisseur, but this is the most delicious Vegas roll I've ever had in the valley. Tried a Shrimp Taco this time and was not disappointed. Three HUGE tempura shrimp. So plump and delicious. This place is a gem, and it's my new regular stop. Great service, great food, excellent service. read more

Friendly fast service. Food extremely fresh and tasty! I loved the music and wall murals. We decided to mix it up since we'd never been here. We ordered sushi and street tacos. Sushi very fresh! We have been coming here for a while and this is the first time we have received our taco plate this way. The side of rice and beans is pathetic. It costs them Pennie's in the dollar to make and they gave us a little over a tablespoon of each when they charge us $4 to add a side. This is unacceptable for the cost. read more

What a dream come true this place serves tacos and sushi!!! Went yesterday (10/11/24) around 330pm and it was really dead but I'm sure once everyone gets off work this place is packed! It's also very clean and soooo many tables! Even an outside patio. I got the 4 taco plate with pastor, green dragon and caterpillar roll. I did get them to go as well and didnt wait long either. I'm sure if I had eaten there, the rolls would have been a 10/10! I was a little skeptical about the sushi but even when I got home, delicious! The star of the show was the tacos with adding their green salsa!!! Next time I go back I'm definitely trying everything birria! read more

First time ordering from here and it was not good at all. I ordered the Papas Con Chorizo, that should have egg, cheese and chorizo, I added bacon. They had egg whites instead of scrambled eggs and no cheese. Either they gave me the wrong burrito or this is how they make their breakfast burritos, whatever it is, I will never order from here again. Tacos & Sushi... Yeah, I struggled with that idea given the location but with us cravin tacos and looking for something new, we decided to give it a shot. Didn't realize how big this spot was and it was busy with a lot of pick-up/takeout orders. The menu is a bit overwhelming at first but then as you start ordering things it all comes together. We had a couple of Carne Asada Burritos, Birria tacos, Carne Asada Fries, Carne Asada Nachos, and the El Jefe Box. Yeah, we ordered a lot but my cousin wanted to take the El Jefe box on their flight to share with another friend. I like the quick service as the food is prepared. The downside for me was the cheese sauce on the Nachos... I was expecting real cheese and this was some that liquid out of the can type cheese that will give you the BG's later!!! Overall, food was great. TVs were on for MNF. Next time I may venture for some sushi, but I wasn't really feeling it this time around. Everything I've eaten here I've enjoyed. It's not the all time best Mexican food , but it's damn good and decent price. The birria burrito, birria quesadilla, birria tacos, steak quesadilla, and chorizo breakfast burrito have all been great. I normally always prefer verde salsa over red, but the red salsa they have is something special. Plus they're open late and early, so there's a good chance they're open anytime I want their food. read more

What a lucky surprise that I found El Jefe Tacos! I had no idea that it was move in weekend at ASU when we went to "Taco Male Juveniles" shop next to campus. Dejected that the shop was super busy. We pull out of the parking lot and pull over to search for another taco shop on my Yelp app! Luckily enough we found this Jem a little over two miles away! They are a bit hidden in the strip mall. We walk in and are greeted by a very nice employee who talked us through their menu. I ordered the steak, egg and potato breakfast burrito and my wife ordered the chicken rolled taquitos! We were starving and devoured our meals without taking any picks. We both liked our meals and would definitely come back to enjoy other items off the menu. I promise pics next time! read more

The mariachi band on Cinco de Mayo was a nice touch! I came for takeout and was astounded by not only how large this place was, but also how filled with college kids it is! Man, it is popular. This is an informal counter-order quick-service place. Come for a casual time out and decent tacos. I got a birria taco, a birria quesotaco, and a birria burrito, plus guacamole and pinto beans on the side. I didn't see any difference in size or ingredients between the taco and quesotaco, which was odd. The food was good, a bit too oily and salty for me, but still, very satisfying. It's comfort college food that is open late. I don't think I'd return, but it was good to try once! read more

El Jefe Tacos is one of the few spots that has carne asada fries near me which was a deciding factor in ordering from them. The first time we ordered, we ordered through a third party website and the prices were $1-2 more/item, which is to be expected. Imagine how silly I felt when I realized this! You can now order online on their website! The carne asada fries are packaged separately; the fries/carne in one box, and all of the toppings separately. A bonus if you don't want soggy fries, but less so if you weren't expecting to do it yourself or you're lazy like me lol. There's a generous portion of a good sized fries (not standard shoestring fries but not as thick as steak cut- somewhere in between) but not enough carne asada. I was able to turn the 1 order of carne asada fries into 2 meals but I felt like I was eating more fries and had to portion the carne scarcely. The carne itself is on the better end of carne asada I've had, albeit fatty. The toppings came in 1 tiny container each of pico, sour cream, and green guacamole/salsa. I'm sure you can request additional containers but it's hard to know to ask that if you are ordering for the first time/someone else is picking up for you. There was a generous bigger container of nacho cheese but I'm not a fan; I'd rather have shredded cheese. Bf ordered a side of guacamole for $2.99 and there was a generous portion of chips and a 2oz (?) guacamole cup. Not bad for the price when you realize it was only $2.99 but I'd love to see a bigger side of guacamole for a little more. read more

I ordered the veggie tacos with roasted sweet potatoes (skin on, which was absolutely the right call), pepitas, feta, and all the right toppings. Whoever prepped those sweet potatoes deserves a raise because they were cut into the perfect sized pieces. Every bite had a little sweetness, a little crunch, a little saltiness... it just worked. My dining partner ordered the barbacoa tacos, and I didn't even have to ask if they were good. The involuntary "Mmm..." after the first bite answered that question. Four tacos disappeared in record time, followed by, "I could've eaten two more." That's about as glowing of a review as you're going to get. Now let's talk about these tortillas. Handmade. Corn. Tortillas. Are you kidding me? They're the kind of tortillas that had me question every tortilla I've ever eaten. Soft, fresh, and somehow they manage to steal the spotlight even with everything else on the plate being so good. The chips and guacamole were excellent, too. The chips have to be made in-house and they disappeared at an alarming rate. The salsa that came with them had this smoky, fire-roasted, chipotle flavor that kept me reaching for another chip... and then another... and then suddenly I realized I'd eaten way more chips than I intended. The bottled table salsas deserve their own paragraph because they completely confused me... in the best way. They bring three to the table... a green, a red, and a darker red. I kept tasting them individually thinking, "Okay, these are alright." Then I started mixing them. Game over. On their own, each one was solid. Mixed together? That was the magic. I don't know if that's what they intended or if I accidentally stumbled onto the perfect combination, but from that point on, every taco got the salsa trio treatment. The only tiny hiccup was when we first walked in. We were greeted, asked if we wanted menus, and sat ourselves. We waited for a bit thinking someone would come take our order, only to realize it's actually counter service. Once we figured that out, everything was smooth sailing. Not a big deal at all... just something first-time visitors might want to know. Follow the sign "order here" I also loved the layout. You can actually watch them making the food, which somehow makes the wait even harder because everything smells incredible. Two tacos ended up being the perfect light meal for me. Could I have eaten ten? Absolutely. Those two statements can both be true. Meanwhile, my dining partner polished off four barbacoa tacos and was talking about ordering two more. We only ended up here because another place happened to be closed, and honestly, I'm glad it worked out that way. This ended up being one of those meals we keep talked about on the drive home. Oh and the bathrooms?. I walked in and immediately thought, "Whoa... this is a cool bathroom" The lighting had this pinkish-purple glow that made me feel like I'd accidentally wandered into a trendy lounge instead of a taco shop. I honestly wasn't even sure there was regular lighting in there and I didn't look... because the vibe seemed so intentional. Finally, the music. .. upbeat, dance-worthy, the kind that had me bouncing in my seat while waiting for my food. Between the atmosphere, the lighting, and the music, the whole place had me want to hang out a little longer. Zero regrets. I'll absolutely be back... and next time I'm ordering more tacos.
