I'm sorry Bobby but this is NOT the best pan dulce! I heard all kinds of hype about this place from my friend and I made sure I saved enough calories for me to enjoy a piece of pan dulce after lunch and let me tell you... what a waste of my 200 calories! I definitely have to take him to the panaderias out here in the bay because he is missing out! This panaderia is a medium size shop, with glass windows all around and a lot of light coming through. Very clean and clutter free. They must make their own tortillas because it seemed like it was a very popular item to buy. They only have two long glass displays with bread and a lot of OPEN room for more pastries. Their bread looks good at first glance (except for their "puerquitos" which didn't look like pigs at all... they kind of looked like embryo pigs instead... idk, oh and they looked fried rather than baked... just awful!) Aside from the puerquitos I like the elotes which in my experience they tend to be pink on the inside.. well not here! I had an elote and my friend had a concha and I don't know how his was but mine was plain plain plain. I mean... even Marinela's bread tastes better than this one. Go here on a Sunday morning and you can find menudo, fresh corn tortillas and pan dulce! (and maybe a line out the door) Select delicious cookies, custard filled churros, or sweet bread from within the glass case. It's all good. (Stay away from the day old stuff in the plastic bags.) The pasteries give you a fix for your sweet tooth, but are less sugary tasting than the normal fare you find at an American bakery. The price, especially in this economy, is always just right. You can get a whole bag of sweets for only a few bucks. I dare you to try to go over $5. It's nearly impossible unless of course you are feeding an army. Try this place instead of donuts and you will never go back. While you are in the area, check out the mural on the grocery store across the street (food for thought) or pick up a taco to go next door at Progresso Tamale Parlor or El Grullense (both are within walking distance after you park). read more

I placed a custom order 4 days in advance per El Nopal request. Simple order of 2dozen pink cookies, 2 dozen of pink conchas and $3.00 of heart cookies. Simple right.... well the order was complete mess, incorrect and worse blame game ever!! No apologies!!! The worse customer service. One lady blamed the the original lady for writing the order wrong; which was not. Clear as day. The second lady said, "What do you want me to do the order wrong." A... fix it! Then she says "we don't have pink conchas what do you want me to do about it" I told her to reimburse me the difference. She tried to only reimburse me for 1 dozen of conchas and not for the other dozen of cookies. I had to point out her mistake as she argued with me. Another lady had to tell her my order was short by 2 dozens. Ridiculous! I'm only giving them 3 stars because the pan dulce delicious. But I will never place a custom order. Their bread is really good. I know people that have driven to Hollister from San Jose just to get their bread or they beg me to buy them some before I head to San Jose. I don't really like conchas but they are soft and tasty at El Nopa. Their "bolillos con queso y chile" are good as well as their "cuernos" or "polvorones." I especially made my yelp account just to review El Nopal. I've been coming here since I was a tiny little boy. I've eaten pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) just about everywhere in the southwestern states from California to Texas, nothing, and I do mean NOTHING beats El Nopal. I live in San Jose and make frequent trips to Hollister just for this bread, I know it sounds insane, but it's true. And I know I'm not the only one who goes out of their way to buy pan dulce. We use to have a lot of family from Hollister who have now moved elsewhere and the first thing they ask for before visiting them is bread from El Nopal. It has a simplistic charm that is definitely unbeatable with the quality of bread. I really hope this place stays as it is for my future kids to one day enjoy! read more

Of the 20-30 words I know in Spanish, I'm so happy that pan dulce is two of them so that when I go to this bakery I don't have to point at what I want through the glass while drooling. Though to be honest, for the soft fresh, flavourful deliciousness of these little breads, no amount of drooling and gesticulation is below me. I don't know what they put in the breads here that they don't at other places, but whatever it is has people making special trips from San Jose to get it, or in my case jogging from my house 3 miles away to justify eating it when I get there! read more

all these reviews are cancelled out when you drive from out of town for a funeral like I did and get treated rudely by the sales clerk! who is able to speak english but she not helpful when you dont know the names of the items (in Spanish) and then charges me whatever price comes to her mind,she clicking away at the register I bought every Item by 2's and in the end charged me $17.49 and I had to ask for a receipt, then it was faded and Not a itemized receipt and I asked for a written price list (for my event reinbursment) she said she has other costumers I have to wait or get in line again...she might as well have charged me $29 It wasnt my money that I was spending anyways. but I wouldnt cheat with money and at the same time I dont want to be cheated either...All this to say PUT UP A LITTLE PRICE LIST!! to be sure that the sales clerk dosnt make a slip of the finger when she is totaling up her addition like a mistype cause "It Happens" and dont pretend like you dont understand english dang how much are the little piggie's?!! haha Oh and a fly in the glass case of impanada.Thank you I feel better getting that off my mind. read more

I am writing this review on behalf of my friend who was there a week ago. I would give this place negative stars if there was an option to. My friend went there to buy cookies for her daughter. When my friend asked for fresh cookies the owner immediately told her I can't sell you cookies. My friend was like WTF. Just because she asked for "fresh" they refused to sell her cookies. I have searched and searched to find an equivalent to this bakery since I moved to San Jose. Ten different Mexican Bakeries later, I still have not found one that prouduces a "concha" as tender and melt-in-your-mouth as the ones produced by El Nopal. Whenever I make a trip to Hollister, this is my first stop. I pick up 3-4 conchas, and 2 cuernitos (think: heavier, denser, richer versions of croissants). I purchased a couple of pastries I didn't eat them but my son said he liked them. I bought tortillas. They appeared like regular tortillas. The only disappointment was that it was difficult to find I was traveling from out of town and the place was very small located in what appeared in a mixed neighborhood. The very best, I live around the corner and love that the smell of best pan dulce on the planet is constantly wafting by. The concha (sugar crusted rolls) are better than any donut and the croissant style pastries are dangerously good if you toast the top a little with your broiler. read more

i used to love the tortillas, how ever they must of changed the recipe. both flour and corn taste like cardboard so dry and when you warm them up to make a burrito or a taco they brake instead of folding nicely.... so sad i am sure it is all to save a few bucks, instead you loose a loyal customer. read more
