Call me loco, but the Pollo rocked my world recently. I grew up eating their chicken. Yummy yummy chicken. To the East Coasters - that's rotisserie Mexican chicken a la fast food chain. It doesn't sound tempting at all, but the Pollo could beat out a ton of chicken joints in the city charging triple the cost. On this trip, I took the bf who came home with me for the holidays, and told him he'd love this place since his choice of meat is always chicken. A chicken lover and a pork fiend?! Star crossed lovers, I say. We went through the drive thru and I saw something new on the menu - tamales! Oooh I love a properly cooked tamale and loathe a dry 'un. We then parked the car. Drive thru only to park the car?! Too lazy to go inside, I guess. The bf liiiked the chicken. Didn't love it, liked it. That's what I get for hyping up a fast food chicken joint. I think he'll learn to love the golden, salty brown skin and juicy dark meat after some time back east. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. At least he appreciated how cheap it was - less than $10 for both of us. But what the Pollo did to me was tamale'd me. The chicken tamales are GOOD. AMAZING! I loved them and ate the bf's. 'Oh you don't want these. They don't taste good. Better you stick to the chicken.' I made a vow to myself to come back before my flight to NYC for more tamales. It's absolutely possible that the tamales, in reality, sucked - they could've been dropped on the floor, pre-frozen, or not even tamales at all. And I still would've thought it was delicious because NYC has made me forget what authentic Mexican food tastes like... But it's also possible that these tamales are on FIYAH!!! 4 stars for having patience with a infrequent drive-thru-er. Yes, I am the idiot person that doesn't know how to order drive-thru. Do you blame me? I lived in a town for 6 years that outlawed drive thrus. Speaker: Ok we have a #2 combo with flour tortilla. What about the drink? Lilani: A drink? Oh I get a drink??!!! *excited* Speaker: Yes. I forget the marvels of fast food. There is something about shredding their chicken and putting it in the little flour tortillas with their salsa that just brings me back to childhood summers. This meal specifically was absolutely delicious because I had just gotten out of volleyball, so I was starved and absolutely delighted that they were open until 10pm! Yesterday I ordered a Double Protein Avocado Chicken Salad at this location and asked they NOT include corn or tomato on the plate. The cashier, who was very pleasant, repeated my order back to me correctly. When my order arrived, (in a very timely manner,) it unfortunately contained corn and tomato. Ok, no big deal, we all make mistakes, so I pointed out to the cashier that my order was incorrect. After some hesitation, where she actually pushed the tray back toward me, I explained that I was on a low carb diet and couldn't eat the corn, and that I didn't like tomato. This is just weird. I shouldn't have to do that. Only after she saw I wasn't going anywhere she looked back at the kitchen, said something to them and then after some hesitation she sent it back to the kitchen. It came back about 30 seconds later, and I could see it was the same plate. Someone had actually taken a utensil and SCRAPED off SOME off the tomato and corn as well as all the avocado (I did want the avocado, never said for anyone to remove it) and sent it back to me! Wow, seriously? I was unwilling to confront anyone at that time because I felt that if the chef, or whoever it was, was willing to do that, who knows what they were going to do to my meal if I made a stink and demanded them to remake it? I went to the trash can and scraped of the rest of the undesired ingredients and ate the salad, intending to contact management myself to let them know what had happened. This was my first and last visit to the Thousand Oaks location. I don't usually complain about this kind of thing but I paid for this meal, stated my order clearly and the cashier repeated it back. That I was refused the meal I had paid for is just unacceptable. read more

They didn't put the chicken in my tacos, and they had the audacity to give me attitude when I brought them back asking for some chicken! Whateva! That's been the only problem I've had here. Since I work pretty close, I tend to come here about once a week when I crave the spicy avocado salsa and 2 for $1 churros. It may be fast food and commercial Mexican food, but it holds its own. I will give this a high 4 all because I haven't had El Pollo Loco because their chicken just doesn't taste so good where we use to get it. But I said this a different location and the closest from where we were and I guess I'd rather have this than burgers again! The store was okay. A bit dirty on tables and needs to be kept clean faster. But it didn't feel dingy or anything like that. Wr ordered our three piece chicken and sides of mash and gravy, mac n cheese, and spanish rice. The chicken was very nicely cooked and delicious. I was amazed how crispy the chicken skin was! Wow, it has been a while but this is actually good. All the sides were yummy and it was very satisfying the hunger that lunch day. I wished the El Pollo Loco nearby were like this. This is my first time here and it was a good one. Food was good and employees were nice. It makes me want to try the ones nearby my place but I am also scared to be served old tasting chicken. Drive-through order taker: If you are asking the customer questions, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pay attention and enter or remember the answers! EVERY SINGLE TIME I go through the drive-through (which is at least twice a week), the same exact questions are asked again, and only seconds apart. They are obviously not paying attention and are in some auto-robot mode, and are also probably distracted. It's annoying as hell when you have to repeat yourself at least three times and EVERY visit, and it's not because they can't hear you through the loudspeaker. Get it together, people. read more

I didn't know whether I should give this restaurant one or five stars so I compromised. 5 stars: food was good, delivered in a reasonable amount of time, place was clean, servers were friendly, and I got a good laugh over the reason for the one star. 1 star: I requested a large ice tea. There was NO ICE in the ice tea. I took it back and said there was no ice in it. The server said to me, "Oh, you wanted ice?" Smelled funky and floor was sticky. I don't completely understand how there were customers who could stand to be inside the establishment because the stench was unbearable. My wife and I get takeout there a couple of times a month. A few days ago, I went in and ordered two 2 piece breast and leg, with pinto beans and corn for sides on mine. The employee showed me briefly the contents of each box, and I saw a side that appeared to be yellow, so OK. When I got home, it was rice instead of corn. Also, one of the breast pieces was about a third of a normal breast piece, containing about 3 bytes of meat. I always wondered when seeing the guy on the commercials cutting up the chicken with a cleaver, and how they could accurately cut it up. Answer is they can't. read more

My family and I had been traveling for hours when we stopped for an early dinner at this El Pollo Loco. We were starving! It was about 5 pm on a Sunday and the dining area only had 1-2 other people eating there. We quickly ordered and paid. As we began to look for a table I noticed that the floors and tables were dirty, the salsa bar was a mess and one of the varieties of salsa was foamy and bubbly (looked like it had gone bad). There were even flies in the dining area. My husband asked why I didn't choose a larger table. I said "This one is the only clean table". The lady behind the counter looked over at me and still didn't come over to clean the table. My husband used his cup of water and napkins to clean the table while the workers chatted with one another. There were 3-4 employees just standing around not a darn thing to clean the place! Our order was up and they got it wrong. I have dairy intolerance and asked for no sour cream. It had with sour cream. On the positive side, they fixed it without complaining. I looked for a rating from the health department, which by law must be posted near the front door. There was no placard posted anywhere else that I could see. Near the restrooms there were trash cans blocking what appeared to be an exit. On a positive note, the restrooms were decent and were stocked with toilet paper, seat covers, soap and paper towels. No complaints in that dept. While we were there we saw two employees, a cook and a cashier, outside pushing an old car that evidently wouldn't start. They walked back in and resumed work without washing their hands. Yuck!!! It was not a positive experience eating at this El Pollo Loco. I hope they will clean the place and retrain their employees. read more

I really do not recommend this place to eat in peace to start the chicken sometimes it is very dry and if you make a claim the cashiers make you a bad face. the service to the clients is bad or rather to the latin clients because the clients of other races treat them better. that looks very easy as they treat Latinos. This is the THIRD time I've come home after going through the drive through at this location and my order is completely wrong!!! Honestly! First of all, the woman working the window didn't say hi or greet me at ALL, very rude! Just takes my money no please or thank you, she didn't say a word?? It's too late and too far to take the food back... But what is going on don't owners/managers/employees care anymore? I mean if the food isn't going to be right, I did pay $17( not cheap), can the employee at least muster up a "hello" or "thanks for coming" any words whatsoever?! Then a complete wrong order :( :( :( I'm so disappointed. I could have had a steak dinner for that amount of money and attitude. I won't be back I hope someone will read this and clean house. I enjoy El Pollo Loco in general. Always have. I've been to this location probably a dozen times, and 90% of the time they manage to mess up my order. They either forget a taco, or my side salad or something on the lines of that. I'm an idiot for always coming back here thinking they will get it right, but I only have two locations near my area and this one is more convenient. I guess I should prob drive the extra 2-3 miles to go to the other one. And did anyone notice they raised the price to almost $3 for a crunchy chicken taco? For that amount of money I can get two bean burritos at Taco Bell and then chuck whatever extra change at the homeless bum down the street as a down payment for his crack habit. We usually go to the El Pollo Loco in Simi Valley, which is wonderful-great food, well managed, and great customer service. Thousand Oaks EPL is exactly the opposite! My hubby and I ordered avocado tostadas for our 90 year old parents and ourselves. We asked for the senior discounts but they would only give us two and we had to buy them separately. Petra at the counter erred in giving us the classic tostadas which we didn't find out until we got home, several miles away. Also, the cilantro ranch dressing was very watery and the chicken was dried out. I called and the manager was no help: lousy customer service, smart-aleck, no apology, no help. I said I'd call Corporate and he said "go ahead, call Corporate". THEY NEED TO FIRE HIM! I'd give "no stars" if that were possible. We have never had a problem at any other EPLs, but will NEVER go to the Thousand Oaks one again! read more

I've always been a fan of El Pollo Loco, for fast food its got a fresh tasting feel that you don't get from other places. I've been frequenting the location on Moorpark Rd since I work right down the street. The customer service in the drive thru continues to surprise me. No matter how busy they are, they ALWAYS smile at the window, asking me how my day was and are quick about getting my order. They apologize if I've had to wait just a little bit. One time I paid with my card and they forgot to give it back. The cashier was so apologetic and the manager offered to comp my next meal since I had to come all the way back. I appreciated the fact they acknowledged they made a mistake and was willing to make it up to me (not that they needed to). I've never had a problem with the food. Its always hot and made to order. Its a great place to pick up something quick when you don't have a lot of time for lunch. Keep up the great work! read more

I don't rate fast food very high ever, a three is usually the most I'll give because the food is never amazing, but today I ordered the under 500 avocado burrito, via drive thru, it wasn't listed on the description that it came with a huge dallop of sour cream, which I would have told them to exclude because I can't eat it, so that was a bummer because I couldn't eat the little side salad.
