This is the only place where you will see me sucking the meat off a chicken neck. I have no idea what is in the chicken marinade but it is incredible. Pollo Loco tastes like cardboard in comparison. After three trips to Pio Pio, my wife and I now refer to the cook as The Master. Drive by and you will see him out on the sidewalk grilling chickens. Go inside, buy one and you will be hooked. We get the full chicken meal, which comes with rice, beans, tortillas and salsa for $14. It's enough to stuff two people. I'm not sure why the location says "San Fernando Valley" and "Sunland." Eat here now. Trust me. It is moments like this when you can understand why top chefs like Thomas Keller would have a perfectly roasted chicken for his last meal. Chicken, how can a simple chicken be so singularly phenomenal. Go somewhere like El Pollo Pio Pio and find out I am a Sunland native and I am ashamed to say that in their 4 years of existence, this labor day weekend was the first time I ventured into El Pollo Pio Pio. I would say on average, our family might splurge on an El Pollo Loco deal every month but now after having a taste of Pio Pio, it is absolutely absurd to go anywhere else for chicken. The night was perfect. After I did a perfect parallel park on Foothill Blvd (no lot parking) we walked to the restaurant. The storefront had handwritten signs for the tacos and the same hand painted font on most of the Sunland-Tujunga store fronts (I think it is the same artist). Even before I entered the small restaurant, the smoke wafting from the steel drum grill seduced my olfactory factory. It was one of those moments when I knew the food coming out of here was going to be extraordinary. Upon entering, we saw about four small tables and one larger table with a family sitting with food coma glee and watching proper football (soccer). We went up to the small counter and were greeted by Antonio. Luckily, we called in, as they had sold out early that evening, it took 40 minutes for the next batch of chicken to start cooking. The chicken was worth every moment of anticipation. Antonio and his family are outstandingly welcoming and you feel like you are walking into their family kitchen. It was at the counter I had my first glimpse of the chicken being finished off in what looked to be a gas grill after coming out of the charcoal grill. Antonio's wife proceeded to cut two perfectly whole chickens for us to take home. The chicken looked exquisite, perfectly charred with a yellow-red (I'm guess annatto based) spice rub and perfectly juicy with the juice beading on the skin. We don't live far so it only took a few minutes for the chicken and the delectable sides to be plated and devoured. I didn't even have time for a picture, sorry yelpers, I will not disappoint on our next chicken dinner. As hungry as I was, I struggled and made myself savor that first bite of chicken. It was a spicy, smoky, scrumptious masterpiece and a food moment I won't forget. It is a simple joy for me to discover a taste so sensational literally a five minute drive up the road. Even the next day, as I am eating it now, it is fabulous after just a quick minute in my preheated toaster oven. You must eat here, I don' t say that often, but this chicken warrants! It is f*cking delicious. Antonio said he has a second job to the support the restaurant but once yelp gets a wind of this place, he won't need a second job that much longer. Get two whole chickens with handmade tortillas, rice, beans, coleslaw, salsa, get some friends over and have a feast. This is the food of summer. read more

We have been back a couple of times and this friendly little cafe is one of the reasons I have moved to Tujunga. Today we had 3 piece chicken and the 3 chicken tortillas, both with rice and beans. Love the salsa and the chopped onions/tomatoes w cilantro. The entire staff is always happy to see you come in. Now this is what I am talking about: people who love your business. Fantastic chicken! I passed by the place so many times, despite being curious about it. After receiving a text from a friend raving about how good it was, I checked it out. WOW! Whatever the marinade is, it is amazingly addictive. The chicken was so tasty that within the first week of discovery, I must have picked up dinner togo three times. Was driving through Sunland and realized I hadn't eaten lunch yet. Since I'm a El Pollo Loco fan, I decided to give this place a shot. Since I was in a hurry, I ordered a chicken burrito and some chicken tacos. I ate the taco first and was impressed by the fresh moist chicken. Often times, the chicken is chopped up and dries out but I noticed they used fresh chicken off the grill. My burrito was equally good. Wow. I can attest that this place is equally as delicious as Dino's Chicken and Burgers. This small (I would assume) family owned restaurant is a hidden gem. I came here before leaving to a youth retreat and was super hungry. For about 7 of us, we ordered a family sized meal and the total came to be about $50 leaving us both full and satisfied. The chicken was on point and the coleslaw was above average. But the thing that I think makes this place is the salsa. muy deliciosa~ Also, the owners (I think) are super nice! We ran out of tortillas so we asked for more and they gave it to us free of charge. Also, they don't accept credit/debit cards for small items like water so they just gave it to us as well. Looks can be deceiving, although it's not a bad looking place, just small and not very decorative or noticeable, its the food that truly stands out. Every time I order, its fresh off the grill and absolutely delicious. I was very suprised, having eaten at pretty much every Mexican restaurant within a 20 mile radius. I've tried the place across from them, not bad but not as good and overpriced, same goes for Pena's which is a little further up near Sunland, food is OK but prices are rediculous, Pio Pio is above par in regards to both the food and price. A whole chicken and 2 large sides is like 15 dollars. That also includes a stack of about 15 fresh made tortillas that dont even compare to anywhere else. The rice is amazing, and I'm not big on beans, but my family says they're among the best. Easily fills a family of 3 with leftovers for less than 20 dollars total.
