Having passed by on Foothill tons of times, I'd seen the big black BBQ grill in front of El Pollo Pio Pio with smoke rising skywards but had never stopped in. Today, while running errands, I Yelped it, saw the great reviews and popped in for a late lunch. Chicken: 4.75/5. The skin is crispy and very flavorful. The marinade rocks! The chicken breast that I had was a trifle dry but the wing was perfect. Rice: 5/5. Slightly creamier than rice I am used to but absolutely delicious. Beans: 4.5/5. Very good re-fried beans, flavorful. Tortillas: 4.75/5: Hand-made and perfectly warmed. Salsa: 5/5. LOVE their salsa. Service: 5/5. Very friendly, hospitable and warm. Price: 5/5. Very reasonable! $5 for two pieces of chicken, rice, beans, tortillas and salsa. Pollo Pio Pio is the perfect dive. I've passed it multiple times going to my most favorite Sushi restaurant, Tori Yen, in all of Crescenta Valley, but was never compelled to visit until I read Lady Yelper Isobel L.'s review of this value packed eatery. $6.00 gets you 2 pieces of BBQ'ed Chicken, Arroz/rice, Frijoles de Pinto, 4 Tortillas Hecho a Mano/ handmade tortillas. 1) The wing was just OK since it is small & juts our from the body. It is easy to over-cook & become overly dry while waiting for the meatier thighs & breasts to cook. However, the thigh was perfection. The chicken was probably brined before to add a bit of saltiness to "sweeten" the meat & keep the meat moist so the thigh meat was soft, meaty, luscious, fatty, almost creamy. The skin seemed to be in a dry rub of powdered chiles & also citrus juice which may have added a slight gastrique to increase the chicken scented Umami. The heat of the mesquite flame caramelized the citrus juice & skin for an almost crispy texture. The smoky, resinous, oily scent of the mesquite charcoal also made the meat smell almost like a rustic, primitive bacon. The wing may have been a pass, but the thigh is a culinary chef d'oeuvre, but I can't vouch for the breast which has less fat content. The salsa here is very subtle, possibly a puree of Tomatillo, vinegar, Chipotle. The nuanced smoky heat of the Chipotle augmented to the smokiness of the BBQ, & the acidity from the other ingredients made a good dipping sauce to counter the fattiness of the thigh. 2) The Frijoles de Pinto was mashed into a smooth, thick, heavy brown, dark tan puree w/ a bit of earthy bean mustiness & a broth-like meaty flavor such as beef bouillon. The arroz was tinged a reddish orange from tomato juice. It too might have gotten more of an Umami due to the inclusion of the tomato juice. It's cooked in relatively a lot of water so that it is swollen & slightly mushy. 3) The Tortillas Hecho a Mano are thick discs of Masa/corn dough that are charred for a more bucolic, rustic feel as well as continuing on the theme of flaming. At first they come off a bit chewy, but as one continues, a soft creaminess emerges. I used the tortillas as a vehicle to stuff frijoles, arroz, & salsa to make a mini Flauta/flute. I got tired of eating out of a Styrofoam carton when doing take out to take home. I transferred the contents onto a dressier plate & garnished it w/ edible Nasturtium flowers, leaves, & fresh Ruccola/arugula from my garden. Paired the Pollo w/ an Asahi Beer, Kuro Nama/Black Draft. Best chicken in the area. One of the few restaurants I like in the area. Usually get the chicken with a few sides either the cole slaw, beans, or rice. Definitely what you call a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, with amazing food! Ive always driven by this place, but never tried it until recently. They grill their chicken on a grill right outside the restaurant, so when you drive by, it's really hard to miss! Basically - GET THE CHICKEN. Shoot this was like literally the juiciest, softest chicken I ever had. Hands down BOMB. I also tried the pupusa, which I thought was good but not really impressive. The tacos were pretty good too. Next time, Im probably just going to get the family deal with just chicken! Im telling you, this chicken is amazing! Their meals also come with rice and beans, which were really great. The rice was so flavorful, and not dry. They also have jarritos and other mexican soda. That's how you know this place is legit! There's not too much seating inside, but there are a couple tables to sit and eat. In terms of parking, theres not really a lot, but there is street parking. Great grilled chickens. Excellent coleslaw, creamy beans and fluffy rice. Hot tortillas heated in the flat grill. The chicken is cooked outside on the sidewalk in front. The use a smoker and that is how I found the place. It smells heavenly. With Tomatillo salsa they use to marinate the chicken you get a cup to pour for a half/whole chicken dinner. So good. They also give you handmade tortillas. I got the pozole they offer it on the weekend and it was surprisingly very good, just a bit greasy. I remember moving to Tujunga and smelling the chicken cook on the grill from down the street as I drove. I bookmarked this place in my head. After driving by several weeks after work to make it home, I finally decided to stop by and try it. I grew up on my moms BBQd chicken. Expectations are a little high. Til this day, I am yet to find a place that can top that, or Juan Pollo in Azusa. My opinion.... They have a 2 whole chicken deal, 4 sides and handmade tortillas. Hand made tortillas. $28 plus tax. The side choices are beans, rice and cole slaw. You're best bet is to get as much beans as possible. Make some rice at home, whatever your preference is, unless you are lazy or simply have no time. I'll Pass on the cole slaw next time. Wasn't a big fan. The chicken, although a little dry, still pretty good. Great marinade, great flavor. A little over cooked too, but the salsa and handmade tortillas combination was good. I am a big supporter of local businesses. Sweet family runs this place and there's Mexican tv programming. Street parking and full service. Chicken is broiled right outside. This reminds me of the flame broilers you sometimes see in Ktown. The chicken isn't overly sweet or salty. We got 2 sides of beans and 2 sides of rice, and we did right. Rice is super light and fluffy. Beans aren't salty at all. Aguas, because they also give you a giant tub of fresh salsa that will kick your butt! Love this place. Will definitely be back. read more

OMG this place is the bomb. The chicken is very juicy the rice has a lot of flavor & handmade tortillas are just out of this world. The only thing that I would say to watch out for is that there is really no parking ever there.(which is totally out of their control) And to pay attention to the size of your side order before you walk out. A large it is actually the equivalent size of a medium side order container. For example I order 2 entire chickens that included large size side orders. When I got home they were so small that I had to make additional rice and thank God I had leftover beans otherwise I would only feed 3 adults instead of 6 and that would be by serving conservative. But who knows maybe they just gave me the wrong side size by mistake ‍. Still love their food. read more
