El Porto serves up some pretty authentic Mexican food in the area. We started off with their chips with salsa and queso dip. I don't know what they put in that salsa, but it is so darn good --nice and spicy! For my entree I ordered the carne asada tacos with a side of rice and beans. I liked that they give you the taco fixins on a separate plate. The rice and beans were tasty too! My only drawback at this place is the water. I asked for a glass of water with lemon. When I tasted the water, it was awful. This is no exaggeration. My water tasted like dirt. After the first sip, I couldn't touch the rest. As alternative I asked for seltzer water instead, but that didn't really help either. read more

Stopped there about two weeks ago. It was our first time (recently moved here from Phoenix). The chicken fajitas were phenomenal! I've never seen so much chicken in my entree! The chips and salsa were good, too. My only complaint would be the margarita. It was like drinking sugar water. Asked our waitress if they had a "Cadillac" margarita and she said no. I'm shocked as this was my favorite restaurant but today Terrible service! I don't know what happened today but it was not a great experience. A lot of things were missing (after waiting a while) but what bothered us the most was having to wait to pay the bill. I was with a friend and she was able to pay her bill after waiting 10 minutes and I asked a question of what something meant on the bill and the person said "I don't know" and just walked away. I had to wait another 10-15 minutes to pay which was done by another server. We were really close to walking out I'll admit but we waited. This definitely ruined my experience with El Potro. I went to El Potro's tonight and Diego was my Waiter and was great. If you go ask for Diego. With this Delta Variant going around everyone working there is taking the masks a lot more seriously and some wear them some don't. Diego wore his and most of the Waiters did. My soup was delicious and the portions are very generous. I have been going to El Potro's since the 1980's and they have several convenient locations. Second time here and was disappointed again ordered the Chile relleno with cheese inside , chicken enchilada and a kids quesadilla. the Chile relleno was covered in a cheese sauce that I didn't expect or like . I didn't eat it but my server never came over to check on me so that I could get a different one made. Even after asking another server to get her . I sat near the register and heard several other complaints from customers. In the end the server did say she would take the whole plate off the bill but I did eat the other items . Went here while family was in town for their buffet. The buffet had ample number of offerings. The food was okay. The service wasn't great, I must admit the place was busy so that may have partly explained the suboptimal service. The buffet's layout is very poor. The plates are at the far end by the sour cream, Pico etc. This was frustrating because the area by buffet is narrow and you have people going in both directions which creates chaos about buffet line. read more

In 45 years, I've never had such poor service. The server collected our drink order and beaver came back. I wanted hot sauce and the server told me they didn't have any. I said "what Mexican restraint doesn't have hot sauce? She said I've got something like it. She brought out Tampico hot sauce. She didn't refill drinks once and didnt come back to the table. I asked to speak to the manager and she stated that there was no manager. She acted like there was problem. I said" you never refilled the drinks. She told me that she was right over there rolling silverware. She then told me that she didn't have to come back. Restaurant was clean and the table tops where clean as well. Service was good was dead so being seated was no issue 4 PM is the dead time to go if you're looking for a in an out. One issue I had was the food wasn't really fresh Mexican was good but at the end of the day wasn't like most of the restaurants around Savannah area with freshness is a C+. Their buffet is a good value and some items are above average on it. My family and I eat at the Pooler and Rincon locations and it's always a good meal at reasonable prices. Like I said, there is better Mexican fare out there but I still recommend El Portros, especially for a good, quick and reasonably priced lunch. read more

The place is alright. The buffet is pretty good for the price you pay. Students used to get 15% off but they randomly removed that perk without any warning. The food has declined slightly in the last couple years but luckily, you can only do so much to decrease the quality of cheese and ground beef. I got something in my chicken that will prevent me from ever buying something there with chicken again. Other than that, the food has enough taste to be plausible. The service is average at best. The guy behind the counter is indifferent. I can tell he's the manager, but he doesn't act like he cares at all. Rarely will he thank you for your business or even smile. The waitresses will refill your drinks, salsa, chips and napkins until you've ordered. Then they will completely ignore you unless you request something. I've had to request four of five times to the lady serving us, and she seemed very put out that I still wanted more water or napkins after the food came out. I have enjoyed this buffet several times with my husband. It is very good and affordable for what you get. However today I went alone my three youngest children, ages seven, five and three. I was told at the door that the child's menu is from 4 to 12 years of age. On check out I was charged for three children and when I brought it up The man I spoke to was nowhere to be found and the waitress told me that she saw my three-year-old with a plate and that is why she charged her. I again reiterated that she was under four. She then explained to me that the child's menu is from 2 to 9. If we ever go out for Mexican, this is the place. We always have great service, no matter which waiter/waitress is helping us. The food is always spot-on. I tend to make special orders because of being a vegetarian, and they never give me weird looks and never mess up my food. The place is always clean, and you can usually find soccer playing on the TVs in the place. There have been a number of times we've brought 9-10 people, and they never bat an eye or give us a hard time. My hubby likes going for the lunch buffet. I ate here this past Friday for the first time since it was closer to where I live in Savannah. They didn't have the buffet and from what I have read, I should be thankful. I was seated quickly and the waitress was friendly and quickly brought my drink with salsa and chips. The salsa comes in a tiny bowl and is runny like soup; I like it somewhat chunky or with fine chunks - so that was a let down - chips were tasty. I ordered La Amigas (beef burritos with chili on top) and beef with cheese nachos. As soon as I saw my food coming I was instantly un-hungry. The smell made me wish I had not gone here; it smelled like a can of wet cat or dog food and had the same look. I decided to give it a shot anyways and tried not to look at it - unfortunately it had a very appalling taste. The nachos with beef looked like they had been put together before the main entree was made; they were cold and the beef had the same taste of the entree. My wife and I were excited to try a Mexican place by the house. When we walked in, the people working here just walked away and hid in the back. We overlooked this because they advertised great specials. Dos XX was in sale for $1.49 for a small. That's not a bad price. We sat down at the bar and finally someone came out and asked what we wanted. My wife ordered a draft Dos XX and I ordered a "tornado Maragrita". We were told that the kegs were not put in so they could not honor the happy hour price. "Please refer to the picture of the dirty keg lines." My margarita was a frozen lime margarita with sangria mix mixed in. It was not good. The bar had a rusted knife on display. No idea what that is for. "Please see the picture for that also." We saw a worker pour a margarita on the rocks from a jug that looked like industrial cleaner. I would not recommend this place. The Cherry on top was that we were charged full price for a bottle of Dos XX. One margarita and a 12oz bottle of Dos XX was $14. This seems over priced for me. Come here if you wish.
