The person taking your order is always friendly, and the food comes really quickly too. The dining area looks pretty nice as well, even though I don't normally eat there as I only take it to go. I ordered the California burrito, it came with lots of filling - fries, guac, meat - and it was all mixed in well so that you get a bite of everything in the burrito with each bite. Seven years later, the second El Rancho Grande is hanging on in the Haight. I meant to come here much sooner, but the OG ERG was right by my old place, and why walk all the way to Haight Street when Divis was so much closer? So I dithered and dilly-dallied, and this ERG grew more and more disheveled even as the OG ERG rallied and is now on its third or fourth fading after sprucing up. I was supposed to come here two more times before reviewing it. Then my building burned down. I no longer live within a mile of Haight Street, and John S. Yelp rules are John S. Yelp rules, so I can now review the Haight Street ERG without regret. It's fine. Actually, it's not. It should be better. It should live up to the high standard that the OG on Divis has set. But as I've said in previous reviews of taquerias in this same space, the location usually chews taquerias and spits them out. So I'm glad ERG has lasted this long, but I'm simultaneously disappointed that it's not all that it can be. Part of the problem is that Mi Familia, which used to be Zona Rosa, just isn't as good as Zona Rosa was. And MF's hours are scattershot and unpredictable, and the place looks like it's permanently closed half the time even though it's not. So no real competition lowers this ERG's game, even though the OG ERG has no immediately nearby competition with which to compete. Any ERG worth its salt should give you lots of nachos for the price. This ERG doesn't quite do that, although the food is similar. And because it's always empty, the food comes out fast. I'm still conflicted. read more

My burrito was a Super Burrito with grilled chicken, subbed pinto for black beans, on a tomato tortilla. It was my first time here and they messed up my order and gave me a burrito with a regular tortilla, pinto beans, and I asked for guacamole on the side but it was in the burrito. Other than the mix-up, they remade mine and I enjoyed it. The salsa were great, salsa verde was my favorite.
