On Saturday, July 25, 2026, we toured our first-time visitor from France, Thomas, around San Francisco and offered him dim sum in Chinatown or a Mission-style burrito for brunch. He chose the burrito, so we went to El Rancho Grande since we were already heading to Haight & Ashbury. El Rancho Grande is a family-friendly taquería on Haight Street with two colourful floors. During our visit, the upstairs restroom lacked soap because the dispenser was broken and empty. This lack of hygiene upset Mom so much that she said that she refuses to ever come back. Good thing that we had already eaten when Mom made this declaration...and thank goodness for the bottle of hand sanitizer at the front counter. The menu, posted above the counter and kitchen, is of mostly classic Mexican fare ranging from Burritos to Tacos, Quesadillas, Nachos, Specialty Plates, Sandwiches & Burgers, Ensaladas (salads), Caldos (soups), Desayuno (breakfast), Side Orders, Extras, Beverages, Beer & Wine to Desserts. According to the boys, the counter-service spot's hefty Burritos were excellent, even better than another burrito that Thomas had from another San Francisco spot on the 4th of July. Mom and I got two REGULAR Tacos each; AL PASTOR & CARNE ASADA and CARNE ASADA & CHORIZO respectively. Both were of generous portions and vibrant flavours - the perfectly seasoned meats were lean and well-charred. The complimentary basket of chips and salsa, a dying perk these days, was also nice. We munched on the freebies while settling into our table and awaiting our order. The boys and I will happily return to El Rancho Grande...without Mom, I guess. read more

Really solid burrito! I typically come here only for the burritos and really only for to go. Their burrito is very juicy. The flavors are on point. The service is really friendly. The person taking your order is always friendly, and the food comes really quickly too. The dining area looks pretty nice as well, even though I don't normally eat there as I only take it to go. The food here was NOT good. Very greasy, salty and yucky. 3/4 of our entire order had to be thrown away. I had BAD stomach issues thirty-mins after my family and I had breakfast at this restaurant. The one major thing I did not like was the female cashier. Her attitude was TERRIBLE!! No personality whatsoever and it was obvious she did not wish to be there working on a Sunday morning. My bad for not leaving as soon as I noticed and felt her bad and negative energy. The location is nice but very old and I had weird and bad vibes while using the men's restroom located on the second floor. I ordered the California burrito, it came with lots of filling - fries, guac, meat - and it was all mixed in well so that you get a bite of everything in the burrito with each bite. Seven years later, the second El Rancho Grande is hanging on in the Haight. I meant to come here much sooner, but the OG ERG was right by my old place, and why walk all the way to Haight Street when Divis was so much closer? So I dithered and dilly-dallied, and this ERG grew more and more disheveled even as the OG ERG rallied and is now on its third or fourth fading after sprucing up. I was supposed to come here two more times before reviewing it. Then my building burned down. I no longer live within a mile of Haight Street, and John S. Yelp rules are John S. Yelp rules, so I can now review the Haight Street ERG without regret. It's fine. Actually, it's not. It should be better. It should live up to the high standard that the OG on Divis has set. But as I've said in previous reviews of taquerias in this same space, the location usually chews taquerias and spits them out. So I'm glad ERG has lasted this long, but I'm simultaneously disappointed that it's not all that it can be. Part of the problem is that Mi Familia, which used to be Zona Rosa, just isn't as good as Zona Rosa was. And MF's hours are scattershot and unpredictable, and the place looks like it's permanently closed half the time even though it's not. So no real competition lowers this ERG's game, even though the OG ERG has no immediately nearby competition with which to compete. Any ERG worth its salt should give you lots of nachos for the price. This ERG doesn't quite do that, although the food is similar. And because it's always empty, the food comes out fast. I'm still conflicted. read more
