First time having Peruvian food. The lomo saltado and the mixed ceviche was incredible! Would 100% recommend.

This is my 2nd time. The first time was with a dear friend. The 2nd time I suggested it because it was that dear friend's birthday. It was his choice to make but because I knew it was his favorite a group of us convened to celebrate our Peruvian rockstar. He loves his native cuisine and very often suggests it for lunch. El Rocoto would likely be frequented far more often if it was more local to us. I enjoy this place because causa is on the menu. Since my trip to Peru about a decade ago, I always want it when someone mentions Lomo Saltado or other traditional dishes. Causa isn't on most menus. For his bday we likely over ordered. Here's me with my main with 2 of 5 appetizers. Overall, I was super happy with the food. I love octopus and would likely order the grilled octopus again because it's not common but I prefer octopus a bit more tender. I will probably always order the causa but I do prefer causa with avocado. Everyone that ordered the tenderloin was super happy with their meal. Their beef heart was surprisingly tender. We got the sampler ceviche. It was too much for a party of 7 and I likely wouldn't order it again due to size. I love their chauffa! The only item of alllll the items we ordered that I probably would recommend not ordering was the calamari as it was over battered and overdone. Otherwise, I'd say you're in for a yummy meal. Most Peruvians know this place ain't it...the food is usually modified to try to fit "the general consumer" rather than being authentic (and subsequently tasty). When tallarin verde looks like a liquidy green Alfredo sauce...you know you're at the wrong place. Basically to be blunt it's not authentic Peruvian food...and that's why it misses the mark. There's plenty of Peruvian places that are good without that price tag and the weird extra added whistles; for example, a traditional Peruvian plate of ceviche should not incorporate tuna *face palm*. read more

Service wasn't good. I went to pick up my curbside order and there is no designated parking spot for that. Parking in the vicinity is awful most of the time. I let one of hosts know I was picking up and order and he just gestured to the counter and said there are no refer ready there so give us a few more minutes. There was a rack with some bags off to side and it was mine. I asked another host if I could just grab it but he asked to see my confirmation email which was fine. The badges were tied up and I was parked illegally due to no parking. When I got home my order was missing, I tried calling in advance to avoid a longer wait time but they kept answering and hanging up the phone or simply not answer. When I arrived back I let the host know they forgot one of the 3 Lomos Saltados that were part of the order. He asked if I had my whole order with me which I said no my family is eating their dinner while I'm here getting my meal that was left out. He said he'd go see what he could do. I asked to also provide me with the two salsa they give you with their rolls because all I received was butter. He said everything we were supposed to get was put in the bag. Which was irritating because obviously they forgot an entire meal and the salsas. The host was very rude acting as if I was asking him to pay for meal out of his pocket. They brought my meal out with the salsas. I should have checked it at the restaurant because when I got home my meal was all soggy fries two pieces of onion and 4 small pieces of overcooked steak. The best Peruvian food around, hands down. Growing up in a Peruvian household it's always hard to find a restaurant that can cook authentic Peruvian food. El rocoto is the closest thing I've ever been able to get that tastes like my moms cooking. This is forever my go to place when I'm craving authentic Peruvian dishes, they have the best cebiches (make sure to let the seafood marinate in the juices for a bit before eating), the best meats and the best desserts. I love having them cater my events I always get so many compliments on how delicious the food is. Now that I'm pregnant I've been craving very specific dishes and the staff is always so accommodating in making sure I can get my pregnancy cravings fulfilled they always go above and beyond. Yelp Challenge 2015 61/365 One of many cool little resturants located on South Street in Cerritos in the same plaza of where Target is. And that is exactly where you wanna park. Dont think there will be parking closer, because by the time you drive a few laps, you could of parked further away and burned some calories. On a busy Friday night, the wait was about 15 minutes. Our service was just okay, took a few minutes to meet our waiter and he was not as attentive as we like. Nothing special, just the basics. Our waters towards the end were forgotten by 2 different servers, round 2 of bread took a few extra minutes. I guess being busy got the best of them. Two of us ordered the Lomo Saltado. The yummy mixture of beef, onions, tomatoes and fries in a yummy sauce with a huge scoop of rice. The portion was generous, the chunks of beef were filling. Buuuuuuut, both of ours was slightly over cooked and the beef was a little bland without the sauce. This is rare for me to even comment on, since Im the one who prefers beef well done to begin with. Beef as it is, is hard to get right. Something that took me years to perfect. So..maybe Im bias since I can cook beef. And just Maybe it was a off night for the cooks, since most reviews rave on the dish. It just needed a sprinkle of magic and a minute or two less in the skillet We paired our dishes with a side of the fried bananas which were the perfect addition to our meal. We opted to get a pitcher of the purple Chicha rice drink, since the beast of mine drinks like a fountain. For $11.00 it was well worth it. The drink was sweet, refreshing, pure goodness with a hint of cinnamon. We easily poured 5 to 6 glasses of the magic potion. For Purvian food, this place is pretty cool and has a lot of potential. My Peruvian friend introduced me to this place around 2004-2005 (I think), and ever since then I've been hooked on their ceviche pescado. It was my first time trying ceviche so I had nothing else to compare it against but I just loved how refreshing it was. I always ordered it with Peruvian drink called Chicha Morada, which is a drink made with blue corn. It has such complex flavor I don't really know how to describe it. On more recent visits I've ordered their lomo saltado which is a must for anyone trying Peruvian food for the first time. I usually passed on it because it just looked simple. It's stir fried beef, onions, and fries, served with rice. Pretty simple dish but is quite satisfying. On few occasions it came out a bit salty so it's been a hit and miss. On my most recent visit I tried Passion Tiradito which was on the Chef's Suggestion list (an insert in their menu). This was very good although the portion seemed rather small. It's basically a sashimi made with halibut, crispy quinoa, aji limo, cilantro, and passion fruit sauce. Overall flavor was good although I would've preferred little more lime juice and less passion fruit sauce. Was a bit too sweet on certain spots. Complimentary bread, butter, and two aji dipping sauces are excellent, especially the dipping sauces. I put them on everything, and goes really well with ceviche. The red (more of an orange color) sauce is very spicy and has somewhat of a smokey onion flavor, and the green sauce has a lighter refreshing taste. I think I prefer the green sauce a little more, especially with the ceviche. The red sauce goes well with any of the saltado dishes. This is definitely one of the better restaurants in Cerritos area. read more

My coworker and I had El Rocoto for lunch yesterday and we both really enjoyed it! Nice decor, friendly staff. Large menu with lots of choices. Slightly high prices for lunch, it was $40 for us yesterday with no drinks, just food. - Bread with aji and rocoto sauces were great, aji was some of the best i've had. - Papa Rellanas - Delicious! No complaints at all with this appetizer. - Lomo Saltado - Very good, I LOVED the beef, it was so tender and cooked probably medium. I wish the fries had more seasoning. - Tallarin Verde - My coworker had this. The pesto pasta was amazing! I would definitely order their pasta next time. I love Peruvian food and as a Peruvian/American I love going to eat my heritage's food. I came here with my mom, dad, and sister. The Lomo Saltado was good. As well as the Ceviche. Heads up on the Ceviche it's not as sour as a traditional peruvian ceviche but you can always ask for more limes. I ordered Carne Enceboll which wasn't that amazing. Especially for the price. It's still a good meal but if you're expecting something life changing; don't expect it to be that for you. My sister really liked her Papa a la Huancaina! She was smiling the entire time she was eating it. Overall, I really like this place. It's a bit far from where I'm located but I'd still recommend you try it out. The things to order here are the lomo saltado, bistec a lo pobre, oxtail fettuccine, and tallarin verde (breaded beef deep fried with pesto spaghetti). The lomo saltado has lots of flavor and is a good one person portion. You have to have it with the aji verde (Peruvian green chile sauce). It's basically beef with French fries, tomatoes, and onions, served with a side of white rice. Bistec a lo pobre is the poor man's steak served with a fried egg on top. Comes with rice, salad, and plantains. I liked this dish so much it was my last meal before I went into induced labor. I thought I'd need the extra protein! Something I haven't seen at other Peruvian restaurants was the oxtail fettuccine. The gravy was pretty good. The flavor was very mild. I needed to add more flavor so I added a little salt, pepper, and aji verde. That did the trick. If you want to try something different, this would be the dish. Finally, the tallarin verde is your standard Peruvian fare, along with lomo saltado. It's just tonkatsu, milanesa, whatever you want to call breaded meat that is deep fried. It's typically served with pesto spaghetti. It's worth trying once if you've never had it. Of course, the aji verde makes it way better ;) The reason for a minus star is the service. I must have come here at least 10 times in the last few years and was never satisfied with the service from the servers. All completely different servers too. No one was friendly or nice. The food here is great. This review is for their "tip" practices. In the last month my family and I have eaten here twice. In both instances the tip was inflated by ten dollars when the server inputted the information into their credit card system. Luckily, I regularly check my credit card statement. Costco Citicard makes it easy to dispute these charges. However, for this to happen, not once, but twice in a month leads me to believe this is a regular practice for this business. Buyer beware. As much as I have been wanting to come here, I think n one time will do. We started off with the bread and sauce (ají), they missed their shot w the ají. Although the bread was warm and fluffy, the ají had no spice to it, it was dull. All there was to compensate for spicyness was jalapeños. I ordered the marisco saltado, lots of great seafood in the mix, I did finish my plate but I was really hungry. I also had the opportunity to taste el saltado de pollo and lomo saltado, but they missed the mark. No seasoning, very blah. Although I didnt order those dishes, my company didnt even finish their food. The best plate was our appetizer which was our ceviche mixto. Their customer service was really good, there was plenty of parking, and the decor to the restaurant was really nice. They are going for a high end Peruvian restaurant with the prices they are asking for which missed the taste mark on 2/3 plates. Don't get me wrong I love this place and always come here but today it was just horrible. I placed an order through yelp for pick up it said it would take about 20-30 minutes. When I got there about 25 minutes after I placed order I showed up to restaurant and lady was super unprofessional saying I didn't have an order. I explained I ordered through yelp and then she goes to check and she tell me it will be ready in 30 minutes that's when I got upset because I showed up with enough time and when I showed my frustration she tells me she can refund me if I don't want to wait. Why would you give me that option I mean I came all the way here to pick it up. So I told her I would wait and then after about almost 40 minutes I got my food. The food looked like it had just been thrown in the bag and everything spilled and she asked me if you want I can give you another bag for you to fiX. Really?!?! You think?!?! This has been the most horrible experience I've had. And I know it's not the restaurant it's the worker. And just a piece of advice: If you will give us the option of using yelp to place our orders then check often to see if any orders have come in so you guys can have it ready for the customer worst ever. Update: once I opened up my plate I saw how little meat it had. I would bet good money that their chef is Chinese. If my history is correct, that doesn't make it any less Peruvian though. Good sized portion entrees, with not a whole lot of filler on the plate. Plenty of choices from the $12 to $20 range. Ceviche is priced the same as an entree, and is a nice size. My first visit to this place. I've been a few Peruvian restaurants before, this topped all. We had to wait about 20 minutes, then we got to sit a long table, were happy. 8 of us, we ordered quite a different dishes, were all extremely happy with our food. More like 3.5 stars. Food wise, delicious. But cleanliness drops it down. Came here based on a recommendation from a Peruvian friend who said the food was authentic. We ordered the paella con pollo special and lomo saltado. The paella was very tasty with generous bites of tender chicken mixed in. It is a bit heavy and greasy and I definitely was unable to finish it on my own. The sauce on the lomo saltado was tangy and savory. It tasted best with the tomatoes and fries-shaped potatoes, but the beef was a bit tough and dry. El Rocoto is a cute little restaurant but we were pestered by fruit flies buzzing around during our meal and there were definitely dried onions and cilantro stuck to menu pages and chairs. read more

I asked to take some home. I poured that over my chicken, too. --DECOR-- Inside didn't scream Peruvian. The menus are a leather bound book with great decoration, though. A can of Inca Kola is $3.50. *** Ceviche and Tiradito - Mixto (halibut, shrimp, octopus, and squid in leche de tigre, Peruvian corn, and glazed sweet potato yam - $15): Good and fresh seafood combo ceviche with super vinegary aftertaste. It also came with a giant piece of sweet potato (originally I thought it was a piece of carrot) and some very crunchy peanuts. I don't love this appetizer, but it wasn't bad either. Lomo Saltado (stir-fry beef, onions, tomatoes, fried potatoes with rice - $15): I had my share of Lomo Saltado from few other places (Mario's in Hancock Park and El Pollo Inka in Torrance) and I am not sure whether I can justify $15 for a slightly above average dish. Best Peruvian food, hands down! I thought Lolas in Glendale was the best but my experience here at El Rocoto surpassed that. From the service to bread to the food, everything was delicious and came out quick and fresh. I had the Aji de Gallina (shredded chicken with creamy aji and walnut with potatoes and rice) and it was absolutely delicious! I've never tried this dish before and was surprised at how flavorful it was. It also came with a hardboiled egg and an olive as garnish (I only wish they'd added more olives) but oh so good! My husband got the lomo saltado (another Peruvian favorite) and my stepdaughter loooved the tallarin trozos pollo (Peruvian chicken chow mein). Everuthing was seasoned so wonderfully and you get so much food, I had no room for dessert but will be back to try their Lucuma ice cream which I love. Definitely will be back for more! read more

They did not help us when ordering our food which is why we left no tip, however we were given attitude and treated very disrespectfully due to giving them no tip. The green sauce was cilantro and the red was roasted red peppers. I was a fan of the orange/red sauce more. I ended up ordering a dish with rice. The dish came with chicken, veggies, and fries. I love the idea of having fries in my food. I thought I was good. It cost $13 buck and I was able to have it for dinner and make two lunches out of it. The dish was huge.
