I asked for extra salsa / hot sauce & employee commented it's not free & he gave me a small container. & when I got out of the car in my driveway, the liquid spilled so the bag was a sloppy mess. A true hole in the wall. This is a tiny seafood restaurant in Boyle Heights with delicious entrees that have a very homemade style of cooking. The lady who took our order was very nice. They're open for take out only but since it was only the two of us, she said we can pull the table from outside and rearrange the chairs to eat inside. I have a high tolerance for spice and their chili is so spicy, it cleared up my sinuses. I added salt to reduce the heat and it really helped combat the spice level. If you love avocado, they do not skimp on it. The empanadas were freshly fried, didn't taste greasy and were soft in the middle. While we were there, they had several customers pick up orders and I could tell they were regular locals because the lady knew them very well. read more

I love this spot for ceviche and fish on the grill! The owners are the loveliest and kindest people who offered to grill a whole fish for my friend who likes to make up his own orders. This is a hidden gem in Boyle heights. You can tell it's a good mom and pop mariscos spot as there were families that knew the owners also enjoying lunch when I visited. I had the campechana cocktail which had a bonus oyster in top. The cocktail was too watery for my liking I wish it had more of a lime or Clamato flavor as a base as it was missing flavor. The shrimp taco order automatically comes with 4 tacos which is super cheap for $8. Unfortunately the fried tacos get soggy in the tomato sauce they top it with and they were also missing flavor. Another downside is that they don't sell liquor. I would have been happy to pair my seafood with a corona and salt to add flavor to rh. This place is still a decent option to get your mariscos fix. read more

We yelped seafood in East LA, several spots came up, we decided to come here. Wow, great choice!! We drove down from West LA, it took about 20 minutes to get there. We arrived, there was parking in the street and in the back of the restaurant. We parked in the street, we walked through the front door, the seating area was in the back, the patio. It was perfect, there were plenty of fans and covers to block the sun. Its definitely a hole in the wall, but definitely worth it!! They bring you a botana de ceviche de camaron with salsa verde and tostadas, delicious. We ordered the ceviche de camaron crudo(bigger shrimp), very spicy but amazing! Then we went w an order ceviche de camaron cooked al mojo de ajo (cooked in garlic), finger licking good! We then finished it off w a pescado sarandeado (fish cooked in the grill both sides at the same time), meat was just falling right off the bone, added some tortillas, that was everything!! They serve water, mexican bottled drinks, and soda cans. They do not serve beer, but bring your 12 or 24 pack, they dont mind. This was ok very plain and basic great part is its huge and filling Shrimp Empanada $1.75 4 stars... WOW this empanada is HUGE and has actual shrimp in it not just ground up shrimp... it was nice and crisp and hot and very good i really recommend this they have an order that is 4 for $7 this is nice if your sharing... Oooh, delicious mariscos! This is a great little place. The inside area is very small - when you walk in, there is a place to order on the left, and a couple small tables on the right below a banner menu. But if you eat here, you can go out to the back, where they have a covered patio that is blocked from the wind. We started with the ceviche de pescado ($7 for a whole order, not just a tostada), which was excellent. Bright and tangy, with clean flavors. The fish is fresh and plump, and the dish is very refreshing. Next came the fish tacos (4 for $5). Big pieces of fresh fish, cooked well and topped with tomato, onion, lettuce and avocado. The fish itself is seasoned subtly - enough to eat the fish on its own, but when coupled with the tortilla and toppings, a little underseasoned. But, that is why the freshy, spicy salsa and dressing (some sort of pink mayonnaise based sauce) are on the table, right? A plus of these fish tacos are that they are not breaded and deep fried - so they feel a little healthier than others. We finished with the aguachiles ($10). The shrimp are small, but sweet and tasty, and numerous. This wasn't quite as spicy as I tend to like aguachiles, but like the ceviche the entire dish was clean and bright. We tried a pineapple juice after we saw them making some for the table next to us. Very fresh! Made to order. The service is warm and friendly, with a family feel. Only two people were there the entire time, and they did everything, from food preparation to service - we saw the woman shelling the shrimp after we ordered the aguachiles. I was very pleased and happy with my experience here. They start you off with salsa and ceviche with tostadas!! My fiance and I shared the fish sarandeado and it was extremely delicious. The marinade on the fish is not too spicy. It was a cross between sweet n tangy but I couldn't get enough of it!! It was delicious on the grilled fish...crispy around the edges but soft and tender in the middle. I loved the cucumbers, avocado and onions on top. My brother read some of the great reviews and decided to bring us here. The food was not as great as described on the reviews. I got the tostada de ceviche de pescado and my brother ordered the ceviche de camaro. Both were just okay, if that. ( the cucumber tasted sour and the fish tasted old.) Additionally, the camarones al mojo de ajo tasted badly- as if the shrimp was peeled and boiled separetly and then sprinkled with garlic powder. One Sentence Review - Like one big Mexican backyard barbecue that you accidentally wandered into. The Experience: El Sarape resembles a home that is secretly selling food from a kitchen that looks like it belongs in a garage (you Chinese and Pilipinos know what I'm talking about). The fact that the workers all seem related makes the experience that much more home bbq-like. FYI, they speak English but it is clear that they don't have the opportunity to practice it much based on the type of crowd that comes here. As for the crowds, the crowds are tias (older, semi-chubby mexican auntie look-a-likes) in flip flops, swigging Pacificos and singing to the beat of the old school nortena favorites streaming out of a jukebox. The eating area is like a make shift patio filled with fold up tables and chairs that you see at Big Lots, with a view of the alleyway and parked cars. It really reminded me of Mexico. And like most home barbecues - BYOB. The Food: They start you off with small bowls of salmon ceviche, some deceptively spicy green salsa, and deep fried tortilla shells. Nice, unexpected touch for a place like this. Ordered the zarandeado, the agua chiles, and the fish tacos. The Zarandeado is a grilled fish, split in the middle, and typically marinated with garlic, soy and chiles. Not sure what type of fish it was, but it was white, meaty, and bursting with flavor. Comes with rice and corn tortillas for about 22 bucks for a fish that can feed two comfortably. I actually wanted the single portion (the una persona version) for 11 bucks, but I blame the miscommunication on the language barrier. Overall, it was tasty and not a bad deal. The agua chiles was basically raw shrimp, mixed with avocados, onions, lime and chile. To paraphrase a line from Batman, these are NOT for the uninitiated. It is meant to be more raw than not, much more raw compared to the typical shrimp ceviche. 10 bucks. The fish tacos were made with filets of the same type of fish used for the Zarandeado. It was not deep fried, baja style, but grilled. Great quality. You have an option to do it fresh or fried (the tortilla, not the fish). The fried version is covered with a tomato sauce that reminds me of a thinner sweet and sour fish sauce. 4 for 5 bucks. Very good deal. Not a cheap rate date place, but more like a lazy 12-pack Sunday type of place. read more
