I love sitting, chatting with chips and salsa and a good margarita. We found El Sombrero on Yelp. The restaurant is nothing to look at on the outside. It looks like a warehouse. But, don't pass it by because it's not fancy because the food makes it worth going in!! You can enter the driveway through the front or, like us, miss that and go down the next road to another entrance. The parking lot is big-with plenty of parking in front near the entrance. We were greeted at the front and shown to a booth. Social distancing is not a problem since the place is huge! We were given menus but we planned ahead via menus on Yelp. I ordered my normal chile relleno and hubs ordered the chicken fajitas. The chips and salsa were good and the margaritas were excellent!! They tasted like they were made of fresh ingredients and delicious! And at $3 on Thursday for the small one which was perfect size for me! Walqiidia was our server. She always very good! She seemed to come by no matter how busy she was. The chile relleno was scrumptious!! It was like I would get in Mexico. Nice light sauce on the fried chile which may have been baked because it was tender. Just how I like it!! Hubs loved the chicken fajitas!! The chicken was tender and both the chicken, onions and peppers were charred from the grill. The meals were served with rice and refried beans which were good. Tortillas were good, too! GPS made us go around and we passed the restaurant after turning around and getting out of a industrial warehouse district it said turn right onto 301 and we noticed the wagon wheel. Looks like a warehouse from the side and front but don't be discouraged it's a real nice place inside. We were parking when someone parked next to us and we asked how's the food low and behold it was the we owner Mike he has s super Sense of humor and answered it's great I come here a lot but I'm the owner. Once inside the restaurant was beautifully decorated with nice wood engraved and brightly colored Mexican furniture. Fully stocked bar and quirky signs if you're detailed and noticed. This place is a gem ! The food is as brought out fresh and hot. The server was also very helpful making suggestions. The unsweetened tea was so light is was like water so I let her know and she came back saying she tried it and was too diluted. I'm impressed that she did this and came immediately back to offer something else. The Mexican music was spot on The restrooms were clean and as the time passed the families rolled in. You can tell it's a family restaurant but don't be fooled it must be a heck of a lot of fun when they're hosting events. FIRST visit...surprisingly we were the only ones there. I heard about this place after watching an advertisement for the Taco festival last month In Palmetto. Cute decor and looked authentic enough. We showed up with 8 people on Valentines's Day and although it was packed, we were seated quickly. Someone else mentioned they are short staffed, and that is an understatement. The servers do everything!!! Management needs to hire more help. I loved the atmosphere. Bright, colorful chairs and loads of Mexican decorations all over. The inside is way different than the outside as you may not even stop if you looked at the outside. Tuesday's is $1 tacos and $2 margaritas. We all ordered 2 margaritas as we knew service would be slow and we were right. Chips and salsa were brought out which were good. The salsa wasn't spicy, but it had a good flavor. I had a Pancho, which was a taco and two enchiladas. Everything was great. Food arrived hot and everything was yummy. Loved the guacamole!!!!! I managed to eat it all, even though it was a huge portion and I am a small person. Others got quesadillas, fajitas, carne asada, and tacos, and all the plates were clean and everyone was happy. Prices are decent for this type restaurant. We will definitely be back and can't wait to choose something else from the extensive menu. OK, admittedly, if you were to drive by this establishment your first impression would not be "gee this looks like a place at which I would like to eat". It looks more like a warehouse than a restaurant. Fortunately we were joining friends for dinner who have eaten there often and love it. Inside, the restaurant is decorated in a colorful and festive fashion. There is tons of seating and the restaurant is well staffed. The place was full, yet we were greeted, seated, provided menus and served drinks in a very timely manner. The restaurant had a happy hour offering margaritas for $2 and it was Taco Tuesday (which were a dollar or two dollars per, if forget). The menu is extensive and prices are pretty reasonable. I ordered chicken and steak fajitas and they were excellent! My wife enchiladas and she liked them as well. A couple of our friends ordered the tacos and they too enjoyed them very much. We went in on Saturday night. We thought it was odd that no one was there, but we decided to stay. The food was great! Fresh, flavorful, just really delicious! The problem came with the service. We were the only people in the restaurant....the only ones. Our server had a story to tell the other two workers and the three of them stood at the bar and proceeded to have an great story telling event. The story was laced with profanity, thank goodness there were kids in the restaurant. We put our empty drinks in on the edge of the table to try and get her attention...no luck. It's a shame. The owner(female) is very rude and very unfriendly for this type of business. Not welcoming at qall. It is about the money!! There were roaches which was only one reason we have never returned!! They rip you of when youre ordering cocktails. We ordered drinks but noticed the fluctuation of prices. They were higher in price. We asked why and never got an answer just bad attitude. Careful if youre partying (watch the bill for the pricing). They over charge!! Friends of ours went and we asked the pricing and the same drinks were different in price. Turns out I've been driving by here for the last 6 months going to Detwiellers or CK in Parrish for BBQ. Always saw it thought it was weird looks like it's a warehouse. Well it is apparently also a dance hall with live music on weekends. Had been meaning to check it out. 3:30 in the afternoon on a tues place is packed by the time we leave the waitlist is 10 parties deep at 4:15. It looks like the local 55+ mobile home parks have emptied and they have all come here. No wonder everyday from 3-4 is power hour. 1$ tacos, $1 margaritas. Other specials galore. Tables of 10+ seniors loaded on $1 margaritas having a good time. Order a couple $1 margaritas and order enchiladas and chicken mole off the reg menu because that's what we were in the mood for. $1 margarita in small plastic cup but that's ok because it has at least 2 if not 3 shots of tequila in it with fresh lime. Tasty and straight to the brain. Each reg priced plate is enough food for 2 people. The chicken mole I kid you not is the best I've ever had and I've been to mexico 15+ times. I love mole in any form and the wife doesn't but even she loved this mole. Complex, layered, sweet, spicy, smokey, chocolatey, the flavors just kept coming. She loved her enchiladas. Standard chips and salsa served with meal are really good. Half order mexican guacamole (little weird chopped with lettuce) is still huge and tasty served with more chips. Rice that came standard with meal some people have complained about. Don't understand. Hands down best mexican style rice I have had. Clearly it had some frozen mixed vegetables in it but it was light fluffly and incredibly flavorful. Standard refried beans also extremely light not heavy and really flavorful. Chips and salsa also very tasty and as good as you get anywhere and clearly just freshly made. Go cheap and stick with specials (I think you could get out of here for $10 drunk, full and with tip) or order off full menu at more normal prices but I doubt you can go wrong. Packed and stretched thin our service was great but I can understand how that might be hit or miss during snowbird season. I give this 5 stars not because it's gourmet but because it doesn't get any better than this for affordable outstanding tex mex fare and a mole sauce that beats every high end mexican restaurant I've eaten at even in Mexico. read more

I got the chilli relleno with chicken also came with beans and rice everything on my plate was gone when i threw in the towel! They also have really good drink specials for a Sunday $2 margaritas and $1.50 drafts with five to choose from. Walking inside to a neon glow was different for most of the Mexican restaurants Ive been but a cool touch with all the TVs and sports going on. If I could give negative stars, I would. The photo is the "chile con queso", which had NO peppers or additions despite the menu starting it did. After the waitress argued with us that it's "just white or yellow cheese, nothing in it", the main course also came out incorrectly and luke-warm at best. The main courses came out barely warm and incorrectly. So, I asked to speak with the manager, who informed us he bought the place in December and the menus aren't updated. He owned up to sending out the wrong food, blaming it on having multiple same orders (there were 3 active tables). When we said we would just leave and call it good, he asked us to "give it a chance" and promised a 50% discount. Well, the discount didn't happen. He wasn't anywhere to be seen when it was time to pay the bill. As for the food - I promise you will get better at the Laredo Taco at 7-11, or at a defunct Taco Bell. Have been here many many times since I lived here during my hideous marriage. I love their food so much and staff are also very nice and know what they are doing. If you don't know the food nor never experienced Mexican food before you can get the very good advice from them. My common orders here are Chile Relano and jack cheese fajita. I am sure you could tell I like heat and this restaurant meets my criteria for that point. Come to try their food and I am more than certain that you will love them and want to come back. 3 strikes Disappointed. Found this amazing Mexican joint back in late January. Everything was perfect. (The original owners were still in charge and it ran like a Swiss watch) Decided to have our wedding dinner there... Well, strike one: mid March... Daughter got a toothpick in her quesadilla, mom's margarita had no tequila, wife got a wad of foil in her Chile relleno, and friends daughter got broken glass in her drink. ( Found out that mom and dad had retired and their son had taken over management) Strike 2: Went in tonight for a farewell dinner with mom (Taco Tuesday) 20 minutes and we finally get chips and watered down salsa. 1 hour later 2 other families that arrived well after us, have eaten and have paid and left ... still no food. We watched as the servers had no idea of what they should be doing... bussing their own tables, going behind the bar and making their own drinks and just "3-stooges" restaurant. Strike 3: 2 hours later we ask Alfonso (Sweet kid and very apologetic) to send over the manager... (The son, new management) told him our dissatisfaction: 2 hours no food, other patrons in and out while we sat there. He was smug and gave us excuses " I went back and looked at the tickets and the oldest ticket back there is timed at 7:20" I told him "sure that's because we sat here for an hour before anyone took our order." NOT 1 plate or glass or empty chip basket were ever cleared, we just had a pile of stuff at the end of the table..... so, we were ready to go, looking around for our server, then i noticed that the big lady in blue at the bar was not a drunk customer, but a drunk owner because she started calling out the servers to do random tasks and instructed our server to get over to our table, she came by dropped off the check, carrying her coat like she was leaving, never telling us to pay up front, so we just sat there waiting to pay until the lady in blue yelled over to pay up front, wow, just the poorest service....... so, this is what we came away with: the place is oddly in a large warehouse, was filled up early; we were there at 6:30 and the place started to empty out, along came a herd of geriatrics. seems like this is favored by the elderly, because once they all left, the place was empty. it also seems like the 2 owners, like to sit at the bar and drink, ignoring the fact that the servers & bartender were swamped, as they just sat there drinking, thus the VERY POOR SERVICE..... we both decided that this is NOT a place we would return to, NOR recommend it.....there are many other BETTER mexican restaurants around read more
