Before you read my review, please look at my other review - it is for the El Taco de Oro Truck - and it's a very positive review. I did that review in 2008, and at the time of this writing, it is the only other review I have on Yelp.
I feel compelled to write a review for the El Taco de Oro Restaurant & Taqueria after the ridiculous way we were treated on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.
My coworkers and I are business professionals. We work close to Alviso, think "plumbers of the Internet". I usually bring people for work here when Mexican food is the agreed upon choice for lunch.
On the Friday mentioned, we arrived at El Taco de Oro Restaurant & Taqueria in a group of 4 people. We had a meeting at 1:00pm, so we thought we'd be fine.
Myself and one other coworker wanted to eat tacos only, so we waited in line at the Taco Truck (also part of El Taco de Oro) to order tacos. The truck only serves tacos, and our other coworkers went inside to order their respective burrito and taco salads.
Since my other coworkers wanted a burrito and taco salad, they had to go inside the restaurant. Let's keep a time check going. We arrived at 11:50 am for lunch. Our tacos took about 15 minutes in the truck.
After receiving our tacos, we went inside and sat down with our coworkers - we were going to buy delicious Mexican cokes from the restaurant to validate us sitting in there with "outside" food.
As soon as I come in and find my coworkers, I see that's it's really busy. Lots of the tables are filled but the waitresses are running around with no real sense of direction. It's as though they don't have the tables assigned to certain zones. They are playing man to man instead of zone coverage, and forgetting who they are assigned so people are having to wait (us).
I flag down a waiter and ask for the Mexican cokes. He eyeballs my tacos - which are on the plate with aluminum foil (indicative of me buying them outside at the truck) but then say's "Ok". Our coworkers ask him to check on their food order. He says "Ok" again.
We wait until 12:20 - still no food for our coworkers who put their order in with the drinks at around 11:55am, no later. Still no Mexican cokes for us.
At 12:30 no-one has checked up on us, so my coworker who had ordered the Taco salad flags down this guy and said "Could you tell us where our orders are? And where are the Mexican cokes?" He has this annoyed look on his face and says "Whose bill will this be on?".
Are you kidding me? You didn't bring me my requested Mexican coke because you didn't know whose bill it would be on? Does having an outside order from you taco truck mean that I can't buy a coke? WTF? I was stunned, but before I could make a remark my coworker says "Just put it on our bill and check on the food please".
He's says "Ok". At this same time, A group that has come in at 12:05 (when I arrived after getting the tacos) receives their food order. These people ordered at least 10 or so minutes after my other coworkers. (One had a burrito, the other was enchiladas), and they received food around 12:30.
12:35 - We finally get our Mexican Cokes and the waiter says 'I just saw your order, and it'll be up soon".
12:45 - Coworkers still have not received their food, the order being placed over 50 minutes ago. We are getting really upset - my coworker who had ordered the taco salad flags down the same waiter and says, "Look, this is ridiculous, make these orders to go, we don't have time for this." The waiter nods and runs back to the kitchen and converses with some of the other staff, cooks and servers. They are in a group (huddle) and the waiter is pointing to our group and the order. He then comes back and says "Your food is ready but they can't make it to go."
Wow, we nearly lost it. What the eff is this, now? You can't make it to go? Put it into containers? What?
My coworkers says, "I need to talk to a manager", and gets up and walks into the other room where the cashier is. Coincidentally the owner is behind the plastic parapet with the register. My coworker explains the situation to the owner, and adds to the effect - "We've waited so long, and have had terrible service - we want our food to go and we don't want to pay for it."
The owner responds to the tune of "If you no pay, why are you here?"
Wow. We leave. I cannot believe that an owner of a business would respond to a customer situation that way. Obviously the management at El Taco de Oro Restaurant & Taqueria hasn't had proper training on how to handle customer service complaints. Even if he thought my coworker was out of line to demand free food, what kind of response is that?
As the owner of El Taco de Oro Restaurant & Taqueria, I cannot believe your response. You lacked the professional manner and courtesy I come to expect at restaurants. If you continue down this path you will most certainly be losing potential business. You have already lost ours. read more
