I tried their tri-tip tacos, ribeye tacos, freshly made guacamole, and ribeye quesadillas, and everything was delicious. Home made tortillas. The quality of the food really impressed me, especially considering the prices. The portions and quality are incredible for some of the most affordable prices I've found! The restaurant itself is spacious, clean, and has plenty of parking, which is always a huge plus. The cook was also super friendly and helpful, and was happy to recommend some of their house specialties. We've had burritos which are really good but would have been better with refried beans. The quesadillas could use more cheese, the meat was good though (have tried carnitas and ribeye). The tacos are also good but hard to eat the ribeye tacos because the meat wasn't chopped so we just took them home to remake them and chop the meat ourselves. Took a star off because the hours seem to be a little sporadic, especially in the mornings. Prices are also a little high given all the other options nearby but overall good. I'd call to make sure they're open before going since three times we've had to go somewhere else (Tacos al Pastor on Toyon is our backup... their quesadillas are half the price and their rice and refried beans are dreamy.) read more

My kids and I were craving some yummy tacos for lunch. We found this restaurant not too far from their school, and noticed they had a handwritten World Cup Specials menu on their counter. We each opted for the World Cup Menu special that included 2 quesabirria tacos with consommé and salsa for $10. My son had two carne asada tacos. We also ordered the chips and creamy green salsa appetizer. Our server was very friendly. Inside it had a clean atmosphere and some fun World Cup decor added. I had a great experience at El Tacoqueto! I ordered the beef burrito and the chicken taco with guacamole, and everything was delicious. The meat was flavorful, the portions were satisfying, and the guacamole was a perfect addition. Angelica took care of me and provided excellent service. We came in for dinner within one hour of closing on a Sunday evening. Slow day; there was nobody inside, a few kids waiting outside for an order to go, a few orders for pick up. El Tacoqueto replaced El Buen Gusto Taqueria, so the interior layout is still the same. However, the inside is cleaned up and is now brighter and more inviting. Parking still that same, it's tight during peak hours. ~ SPECIALS: ALAMBRE - 4.5/5 Beef asada, pork carnitas, pork chorizo, bell peppers, onion, tomato, cheese, tortillas and chpotle salsa. This was brilliant. While it's the most expensive thing on the menu, it's a decent amount of food. Let's just say that after trying it for the first time, we were back again in about 14 hours! Our top three favorites were *drum roll* Alambre (sharing portion - or not!), barbacoa taco with guac, and the famous rib eye taco with guac! The other meats were also perfectly seasoned and could be enhanced by the side sauces. The tortillas were made from scratch! We were witnesses to Genesis of these handmade goodness. Their totillas reminded us of the ones made by the grandmas in Mexico from our recent travel (that has to be the best compliment by far!) Their customer service was top notch! We were checked from time to time, and the owner even came over to our table to make sure that our needs were met. Alfredo really cared about our experience and our honest feedback. Overall the food and dining experience are 5 out of 5! This is a great spot for casual dining with friends and families. Quick summary: 4.5 stars, good food, a little high of a price point, nothing revolutionary outside of the Asada and Ribeye options. Other meats were good and juicy, worth a try if you want to mix it up. From the remains of El Buen Gusto are 2 shops that summarize east San Jose well. A banh mi shop and a taco joint. El tacoqueto is not fancy, but it ain't grimy either. A lot of the character of the old restaurant is still there. The environment feels like someone saw an opportunity to open a restaurant and jumped into it knowing that improvements can be made later. The food is slightly pricey, but comes with 2 salsas, some slightly grilled onions, a grilled pepper, chopped fresh onions, and cilantro. You also get a squirt bottle of chili oil, a little went a long way. Salsas were good, nothing mind blowing but not offensive either. I ordered one of each taco, wanting to give it all a try. The cabeza, barbacoa, and carnitas tacos were fairly standard essj fair, juicy and moist and tasted of good meat. The carne asada taco was my favorite of the 5. The char was excellent and the meat had a very great chew. Often in San Jose you get two types of carne asada, the rounded cut up slightly gray and soft chunks. It is juicy and full of flavor but does not have the bite of steak. The second is what El tacoqueto offers, cut up cubes of steak, slightly drier than the other version but makes up for it in beefy chew and a meaty texture, often paired with a char that takes it to the next level. I saved the ribeye taco for last. It was excellent but had one major flaw depending on your taste and wants. The guacamole was too overpowering. The Guacamole was excellent, very citrusy, green, and full of flavor, but in comparison to the thin slice of ribeye, the balance of the taco bite was lacking in meaty flavor. The tortillas felt fresh, not sure where they're sourced from or made in house, but they did have that edge of machine cut tortillas. They held together great and tasted pretty good. One man shop on a friday afternoon at 2pm the person behind the counter was friendly and checked up on me once. Service doesn't matter much to me, but it was hard figuring out where to order when first walking in. I'll come back here again, hopefully they last long enough to get a remodel and an alcohol license. There is a lot of competition, as there are 2 other taco trucks on this intersection. What this place has over them are a place to sit down, a restroom, and very clean taco that isn't incredibly greasy. read more

I had the RIBEYE, QUESABIRRIA, and 2 CARNITAS tacos (2 for 1 deal). I ordered it to go. I liked that the corn tortillas were handmade. All four of the tacos came in a single container along with some lime wedges, two containers of a creamy avocado salsa, and one small container of chipotle or chile de arbol hot sauce. I'll ask next time becuase its was a nice dark red color and had a smoky/roasted flavor. I added my own ghost pepper/habanero sauce to every sauce as well as the birria consume to make it spicier. The quesabirria taco was also made using the homemade tortillas and came with a small cup of consome, which had a lot of chopped onion and had a nice simple/clean brothy beef flavor. I liked that the ribeye was cut into strips that were really tender and went great with the creamy guacamole. I liked the amount of onion and cilantro in the carnitas tacos. I forgot that the tortillas were homemade, and the second carnitas taco I didn't eat right away became hard. I poured the leftover consommé onto the taco to soften it up. It added more flavor to it, and I think I'll add consommé to all the food from now on. Can't wait to try the other tacos! read more

My friends went here recently and recommended it. I ordered take out for lunch on Sunday. When i call they said they were sold out of ribeye, cabeza, asada, carnitas. Settled for lengua and shrimp. When i got there i asked and the gal said asada was available. Lengua was soft but lacked any seasoning. Shrimp has way too much of their cream sauce on it. It was a lil too heavy IMO. Asada was just normal a lil under seasoned. Ill definitely come back to try the rib eye and cabeza but thus far the experience was underwhelming.
