Spent a few hours exploring Flagstaff and picked this place because the Yelp ratings were so high. It did NOT disappoint! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The place is very clean and brightly painted. There are lots of booths for 2 or 4 people. The margaritas are HUGE, but we didn't have any (not in the mood for alcohol). Husband really liked the carnitas taco and the rice. I loved the pickled cabbage (came at the same time as the chips and salsa) and the white refried pinto beans! This is one of those places where you have to find exactly what you like the best and then come for it every week! It was busy at 11:45 Friday morning. Was taking the family to "the other" Mexican place in town, told there would be a 1.5 hour wait we didn't have. Checked out Yelp, followed the suggestions to this place, and so glad we did! The food is great! The menu is about as thick as an old yellow-pages book (or the Cheesecake Factory menu) - you'll need a bookmark and a break to read through the whole thing - but it is FULL of yummy choices. Couldn't decide, so I got the 3 item combo. They have CRISPY chili rellenos - why have I never heard of this before?! It was great. Make sure someone in your party gets the fajitas! Or listen for someone to whistle loudly coming out of the kitchen and make sure to keep your eyes on them! They bring it sizzling tableside as the standard place does, but then they light it up - BOOM - 3-foot high flames, scorching heat, lose your eyebrows and then enjoy some yummy fajitas. (Note, the flames are only about 12 inches high when they finally sit it on your table!) Yum, skip the line - go here, now! read more

Passing through flagstaff on the way to LA and stopped here for dinner. Everything was excellent. Great service and delicious food!

Free chips and salsa! The salsa is decent. The prices for lunch seemed a little high. The rice was some of the best Mexican rice I've had. Got the lunch special for 7.99 a burrito that looked more like a enchilada it was nothing special. The taco shell got pretty soggy and fell apart. On our way home from Page, my husband and I stopped through Flagstaff. We wanted to visit with some friends and get a bite to eat. We hadn't had Mexican food in like 4 days (that is so long for us to go without Mexican food). One of my friends suggested El Tapatio. I am happy I asked her because I have never stopped here before, visiting Flagstaff often. Yummy!!! The staff was prompt, pleasant and had our food out to our table in like 5 minutes. We each had a different enchilada plate. Every single enchilada I tried was terrific. I basically licked my plate clean. Don't judge me; my husband says I am a creature when it comes to Mexican food. I don't share, and I WANT ALL OF IT! Haha! Small hole in the wall place, but do not let that fool you. Definitely worth trying the next time you are in town. read more

I came here based on all the great reviews that this place had. The place is located legit in the middle of no where, near the train tracks (which you will know if you are in the right place). The place is small but very cute looking. Since the place is small, the parking lot is huge (bigger than the actual space). Upon walking in, the place was super busy and there was about a 10-15 minute for indoor seating. While we waited, we looked at the menu. The menu was huge with various selections of foods and drinks. The service was alright but it was hit or miss due it being so busy. I ordered the taco plate and one plate is good for 2 people. I will admit that the tacos itself were nothing special. I don't know, maybe I ordered the wrong thing here based on all the great reviews. Maybe I will come back here one day and order something else but it won't be a place I will go out of my way for. read more

Our family loves coming to El Tapatio! We go for all of our birthdays (my kids love being sung to), when we don't feel like cooking, or want to go somewhere we can trust to have excellent service, delicious food and tasty margaritas. I can't say it was bad. Neither can I say it was good. As we walked in the door, my first impression was, "This place looks cool." The walls and doors are covered with Mexican themed murals, the food looked well-prepared and the portions were large. We sat and ordered. Things went downhill as soon as chips were brought. I'm not sure why, but most Mexican restaurants nowadays,this place included, serve lousy chips. I can find better chips picking any random name brand at the grocery store. Our orders were OK, but had no zip. Mexican food should be spicy and have some heat. If I want to pay $15-20 each for bland, I'd rather be eating Texas Roadhouse steak and rolls. read more

First time visit at this restaurant. Had the Enchiladas Rancheros, absolutely fabulous. If you've ever had New Mexico style enchiladas this is them. We got there around 7:00 pm and were 2nd on a waiting list. It got real busy after that, so go early. read more

Passed by this restaurant many times on 66 but thought it was more of a drive thru. Happy I found that it actually is an authentic sit down restaurant with delicious food. My husband and I wanted a place to sit, sip and eat great Mexican food and we found that at El Tapitio. We both ordered different combo plates, mine the Crispy Chile Relleno and pork tostado and his the beef burrito with red sauce and pork chimichanga. Both came with tasty refried beans and rice. We enjoyed every bite of this very authentic tasting food served by Leticia wonderful, sweet waitress. The house margaritas were perfect and not overly sweet. This has become our favorite Mexican restaurant in Flagstaff and we will look forward to returning soon! read more

My husband and I had dinner here. The food was good. The menu was extensive. The portions were very generous. My husband had three kinds of fajitas: beef, chicken and shrimp. The server brought the dish to the table, still flaming. I had 3 kinds of enchiladas: chicken mole, beef and pork. I especially liked the mole sauce and the fried beans. The restaurant building looks like it used to house a fast food restaurant. It has large windows and formica booths. The owners did a good job of enhancing the decor with colorful sculpted backrests on the booths. However, I found the ambiance lacking. The restaurant is family friendly and was quite busy. The service was good. They serve alcohol. The menu says there are 4 branches in Colorado and two in Arizona. read more

Only in Flagstaff for 1 night and I'm so glad I chose this as my dinner spot! It was perfect; lively atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food, and great margaritas made to order. I knew right away that the food was going to be good when I dug into my chips and salsa. The bean and rice were excellent, too, which also which is a good indicator. I saw someone docked a star for COVID protocols and its true, but the whole town and most of Arizona is in denial that there is a pandemic, so can't really fault Tapatio.
