A good 3.75-4/5 The food was good. Service was also good and friendly. Ambiance is nothing special at all. Sat down here just to check it out. Asked for guac and chips, not sure if it was on the menu, but they made it for us. Seasoning was pretty good on it actually. The meal was yummy and filling. Close to $55-60. It was a solid meal. I didn't get too adventurous with ordering. I got something that i thought would be solid to make. I wouldn't make a special stop here to try it out, but if it works for you and you want Mexican food, this will do the trick. You'll have good service if you come here. Authentic Mexican food at its finest! My friend and I went here because she has been bugging me about a pozole soup, which they have it on their menu. The place from the outside looks like run down next to a chicken fast food joint, but the inside's perspective looks homey and feels like some abuela is making food for you. Too bad its Covid season because it might be a great idea to dine in. Don't get me wrong, the neighborhood around this place is pretty rough since its near Downtown LA, but nonetheless they serve legit Mexican food. I ordered their Chliaquiles con Carne, which is a shreded tortillas in chile sauce with steak on top. This menu item comes with deep fried beans and rice for its side. The tortillas are great and it is as fresh as you can get. And yes, as I mentioned it before; Seems someone's abuela made it for me because of how they cook.. a real homemade flavor! I ordered their Cucumber and lime fresca juice and it soften the blow pretty nicely and refreshing, as well. Of course, my friend ordered her Pozole and she was suprised that has a large serving. Funny enough, she has been raving this place on the way back home. It's a small hole in the wall type of restaurant. Think of it like you are going to your parents house and they go make you food. It has a very mom and pop feel, but the service is good. I don't get why other people complain. The prices are higher than similar spots, but it's understandable with the current economy. Beer costs you 5 bucks a bottle for Modelos, 5 bucks for a Coke medio litro. The food ranges from tacos to plates. We started with some complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa is not your typical pace style salsa, it's more like a salsa for tacos. Had a slight bit of heat and the chips were fresh. For our order, my daughter had the birria plate and I had the chilaquiles plate with a birria taco on the side. They offer both Chivo (goat) and res(beef) birria. The order comes with 3 tortillas hechas a mano, onion, cilantro, dried red chilies, rice and beans. Overall not bad for 16 bucks. The chilaquiles plate came with 2 eggs, over easy, chilaquiles Verdes, rice,beans, sour cream,cheese and diced onions. Again, good portion for the price. This is a review based on ordering birria (lamb) 4 times for delivery from El Tapatio over a 3 month period. I am giving one star due to overall consistency with the food and will not order from this restaurant again. Keep in mind this is something I order a lot from other restaurants, all serving very authentic Mexican food, so this is based on my fair experience with this dish. 1st birria order was excellent tender flavorful meat. Large pieces of lamb and made roughly 6 tacos (high expectation set) 2nd birria order was completely inedible chewy meat; I order this dish for a 2 year old, we go to Tijuana monthly, and this is one of the only foods he eats, but despite that, the meat was too chewy for me as well, an adult with all my teeth. And the consumé had no flavor, it was almost a traumatic experience it was completely different from the first order. 3rd birria order was so so. it was fine, but not to where I would think of this restaurant first when going for birria. 4th birria and last. I will not order from the restaurant again. All skin (I didn't order lamb skin and the restaurant photo is different from what I got here, some skin is expected maybe, but you can see from the photo I received a bowl of lamb skin) a weird gamey tasting broth, and barely enough actual meat for two tacos. I'm not sure if they have people training to cook, who are just not familiar in making this consistently, but it has been very different with each order. I'm not trying to find excuses for this. I won't order from this restaurant again since 2/4 times the food is actually inedible. I didn't pay 15 dollars for two skinny tacos where most of the meat came from me separating it off the skin as with this last order, and I will not subject myself to this again. read more

The carne asada isn't real carne asada, they just grill their carne guisada a bit and present it as carne asada, disappointing (the menu says skirt steak but it definitely was not skirt steak). Sat at the counter - one of 3 chairs. Jukebox music and seeing the tortillas on the burner really made feel I was in Tabachines near el Periferico or near Minerva. Restaurant gives you chips and salsa when you arrive like most mexican restaurants and they always taste fresh. They also make handmade tortillas for this looking for the authentic flavor. There's a few dishes I usually try when I come here; the Menudo which is made fresh and has great tasting broth if you're into this style of dish. The other dish is the Birria which is either made of goat meat or beef depending of your taste. I always go for the goat meat and for its delicious. Finally The Chilaquiles plate which is fried tortilla chips smothered in green or red sauce with sour cream and cheese, it includes a side of rice and beans. I also have them add steak with my order. A friend invited us here for dinner one Sunday and i didn't know what to expect. They give you chips (the chips are always warm) and salsa they were both very delicous. I ordered the flautas and my husband ordered a plate of carne en su jugo (which is beef cooked in its juices) they both come with rice and beans and hand made tortillas. they were both very delicious, On another occasion I ordered a bowl of their Pozole and that was also very delicious. On this day we literally just walked down Cesar Chavez Blvd and literally just walked in. This a straight to the point authentic Mexican restaurant(Hidden Gem). Friendly staff. Simple menus but they have a lot to offer. It was 11am on a Tuesday and the lady taking our order gave us a run down of what they had to offer and let's just say they were locked and loaded with everything on the menu. Ordered the Birria Combination Plate(comes with beans and rice), Chicken Enchiladas Combination Plate and Posole. And they had chips and freshly made salsa while we waited. Food came out to us nicely plated and looked very appetizing. The food was delicious. No complaints what so ever! But the star of this entire trip were the tortillas that came with Birria. FRESH HANDMADE CORN TORTILLAS!!!! There is nothing like this and that alone is a reason to come here. If your reading this review do your self a favor and just eat at El Tapatio.
