Only Mexican place in the Mission that I know of that offers Menudo and Pozole during the weekdays. Not the reheated stuff either. Most of the solid dishes (tacos, burritos, etc.) are great. The soups are OK. It's nice to have another sit-down Mexican restaurant on 24th St. now that El Delfin is closing. read more

Have eaten here twice in the last couple of days, and both times the service was great and the food was great. It's basic Mexican food, no frills, and that's fine. This place is so meh it makes chevys seem appealing, which is unfortunate because this place has a lot of potential. I may be a white girl but I know good Mexican food when I taste it. The sauces tasted canned. The menu said they have black beans but the server said only refried. And if they pride themselves on their Huevos Rancheros then they must have really low self esteem. They don't have any other hot sauce other than tapatio how mexican is that? However the place is cute and the server was nice, unattentive but nice. I'm a regular at El Tomate and this is why: 1. I live 1 block away 2. They have very good prices. I usually get the $8.99 breaded chicken plate that comes with rice, beans, and salad (iceberg, tomato and onion, nothing fancy). Chips and salsa (pretty good salsa) is included. This is why I choose them over a taqueria. I feel I'm getting a better deal here. 3. They usually have handmade tortillas, so ask for them! 4. The place is mostly empty and I actually like this. I get pretty good service and don't have to deal with crowded places. I honestly think that their "non-hipster" colors and decoration keep people away for some reason. Food is pretty good for the price. Chicken milanesa, carne asada, and fajitas are my favorite. read more

Most places like to break my heart with "we only have menudo on the weekends" but not El Tomate, where they serve large bowls of hot tripe-y goodness all week. The menudo I know and love is usually bright cherry tomato red, but El Tomate's version is deep red and more complex in flavor and so, so good. Since there is a very limited selection of good Mexican Restaurants on 24th street, we are very happy El Tomate opened (sarcasm - as 24th st. probably has 100 Mexican Restaurants in the neighborhood). However, El Tomate is a good safe bet for someone in our neighborhood. Very clean, friendly staff (although some do not speak any english so if you don't speak spanish please be patient). They serve a Mole dish that my boyfriend enjoyed and I had the fish tacos which were very filling and good. Its not my favorite Mexican place in my neighborhood but its great for a group because its not too loud or crowded and it has a good size menu. read more

My boyfriend and I come here all the time. He always gets the flautas. And I was getting a veggie wet burrito every time. But now that they offer their menus in English I've tried the enchiladas and breaded chicken. Both were exceptionally good, especially the chicken, crispy outside and moist inside. Ahhh...La Misión. How I've missed you, it's been too long. My grandmother and grandfather owned the house at 1624 Florida St. (4 houses down from the old Sun Valley Dairy, across from La Palma) for over 20 years and I spent my weekends there while growing up. I haven't been in the hood for about 10 years. I had the pleasure of walking around with my 83 yr old Dad and visit the old stomping grounds. Today, I tried a spot in the old barrio for the first time....El Tomate. After the shock wore off from the changes in the neighborhood, I decided to buy some soup for my sick mom. I decided to go with the beef soup AKA "Sopa de Res". The hostess was very pleasant as I placed my order to go and asked for 2 Modelo Negros while my Dad and I waited. Cool vibe in the restaurant, nice color scheme with the green and neutral paint, no typical ranchero/cock fight theme painted on the walls or the usual sponged fresco walls that were the norm back in the day. We enjoyed our beers as we chatted about the good ole days and the food was out in about 10 minutes. Cool...time to bring it home to mom. The soup looked sooo good, I had to have a little so I can Yelp it. Lets start with the soup broth. The broth itself was served in a quart (or so) sized container. Very flavorful, strong beef stock. You can tell the stock was made with a lot of beef bones and they used short rib for the meat. The short rib was VERY tender, not fatty, although the soup rendered a bit more oil for my taste. If you have a problem with this, you can always let it cool and spoon off the excess when it floats to the surface. In the soup you would find your typical veggies such as carrots, corn, string beans, potato and chayote. All the veggies were cooked perfectly and not mushy. This is huge considering I drove from the Mission to the East Bay which was an hour before my mom ate. They serve the soup with the following accoutrements - chips /salsa, 4 corn tortillas, cilantro, 2 spoonfuls of rice, 1 lime wedge and this crazy hot pickled onion / habanero pepper relish...damn this was hot...love it! If you are feeling under the weather or just love home made soup that is nothing short of awesome, don't walk, RUN, to El Tomate and order this wonderful bowl of magic known as Sopa de Res. Well worth the $11 : ) read more

Carne asada dinner is about 13 bucks and you get two nice sized pieces of carne, a cheese enchilada, some salad, guac, rice, beans, two delicious sauteed green onions. chips, and salsa.
