This place reminds me of another place (also with several locations) called Dos Caminos. Like that one, the food is more Tex-Mex and caters to the professional crowd in Manhattan. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is not the place. They have salmon on the menu, burritos, Tex-Mex nachos with meat and cheese all baked together, and other more Americanized offerings. For that style of cuisine, this place is okay. The steak in particular was juicy and seasoned well. The drinks here are strong too. The margaritas in particular were noticeably stronger than most places I've been to. The place is also very big, modern and good for big groups. As long as you are fine with Tex-Mex food that is slightly overpriced, this place is not that bad. read more

The chips were crispy, the Brussels sprouts had nice char, and the verduras were hearty due to the sweet potatoes. The food was on the lukewarm side when it reached the table, which was a bit odd. This place is a go-to spot for me in FiDi. ALthough the food is not authentic, it's tasty. My favorite dish here is the Nacho Mama. It's vegetarian, and big enough for two people to share. The chips are crispy, the onions are pickled just right, and the jalapenos on top offer a little kick without being too spicy. It's also served on a pizza tray in the restaurant, or delivered in a pizza box if you get delivery. The queso fundido with mushrooms is also really good. It's mented cheese with mushrooms, served in a cast iron skillet with soft tortillas to eat the cheese in. For dessert, I get the tres leches cake. It's very sugary and high-calorie, but worth every bite. It's my favorite tres leches in the city so far. The mexican chocolate mousse is also delicious - it's creamy, whipped, and contains a kick of cinnamon flavor. Usually, the service is good, but once in a while, it can be a bit slow. Short review: Really good margarita. Wish the food was as worth it with one terrible appetizer and an alright main. I was at this alright Mexican spot a while back. While some others have called it the worst Mexican food they've had, I wouldn't really say that. It's perhaps one of the more overpriced Mexican spots I have been to but it is this neighborhood. The staff was friendly enough. I would normally list my drink as part of my first paragraph as usual but as my margarita was the best thing I had by a country mile, I'm listing it separately. Anyway with the rave reviews, I went with the Frozen blood orange Margarita which consists of La Puerta Nega reposado, blood orange, lime, and agave. This was $15 and absolutely delicious and well worth it for the price. There was a good amount of tequila and the blood orange added a good sourness but it wasn't overpowering. As an appetizer I (unfortunately) went with the Tuna Tostadas/tostadas de atún. This consisted of tuna with avocado, serrano, and chipotle mayo and it was served on corn tortillas and it was somehow $17. The fact that I have probably have had amuse-bouche from a fancy restaurant with more tuna says all you need to know about the dish. It would barely be worth it for $10 and for this price, this was absurd. Just not recommended at all. Another person had a salad which was much more reasonable. As my main, I went with the birria tacos consisting of chile braised beef, queso mixto, consommé, cilantro & onion which was $20. There was also some pickled onions on top as expected which helped with the richness. This was pretty good. I would have preferred a little bit more depth of flavor to the consommé but there was a good amount of tender beef. I would have preferred this be a case of quesabirria as this would have helped add more flavor but I didn't mind it. Also the tortilla could have been better. I know someone got a chicken dish as their main which they liked but I don't remember much else. If it wasn't for the appetizer and general prices, I probably give this place a 3 and and wonder why some people have been giving this place such a poor rating. The food here is in general perfectly fine and overpriced. The tuna is a downgrade while the cocktail is a big upgrade. Love this spot as I have been here a few times in the past 5 years. They are super easy to commute to once you get off the WTC station as it's a short walk to the restaurant. Beautiful ambiance, great service, and drinks. Since I am vegetarian, that's what I focus on, and they have great vegetarian black bean enchiladas, which is full of flavor. The guacamole is thick and comes with chips and three types of dips, which is always great to add more flavor. I docked off a point for their vegetarian Tacos. They used to have really tasty cauliflower tacos, which are now replaced by bland Brussel spouts tacos. I wouldn't mind the latter, except it's not well seasoned, and the sauces don't add any flavor. The decor in this restaurant is stunning. You walk in and feel as if you're transported south of the border with wood paneling, glass bottle trees, and calaveras. The restaurant is huge with both indoor and outdoor seating. We came to eat around 10pm on a holiday weekend so it was easy to get a table without a reservation, but we walked by earlier in the evening and it was very busy. They have a great selection of flavored margaritas. The prickly pear was juicy and subtly sweet. The mezcal martini was sweeter than I expected, but the taste nicely blended with the smoky mezcal. The tito santana guacamole was incredible. The habanero and serrano chili peppers definitely brought a spicy heat and they were complemented well by the mango. A ton of fresh flavor in every bite. The chips came in a generous portion size and had a hint of oil. For my main, I had the black bean tlayuda. It was essentially a salad on top of a crispy fried tortilla. It was loaded with fresh oaxaca cheese, avocado, and jalapeño. The tortilla also had a layer of refried beans underneath the veggies. It was a very large portion. Would be perfect for sharing. Let's start with that a few years ago there were like zero Mexican restaurants in Manhattan, if El Vez were the only Mexican place that might still be the case. First: $6 for chips and salsa? Not even good chips, they tasted more like medium quality store-bought chips. The salsa(s) were a very bland Pico-like thing, and a small container (see photo) of a salsa I could give my 19 month old grandson with no second thoughts. Next: a liter of Pellegrino when all I wanted was club soda. Not even any ice, and it wasn't chilled at all. $8. Main course: Steak Tacos, three for $18. Each on small corn tortillas, with some weird "cherry tomato salsa". No cilantro, no onions, no limes. The meat while decent quality and cooked very nicely had NO FLAVOR. Not marinated, not even seasoned at all; just grilled steak chunks. For a scale on the tacos, that's a normal sized fork. The service was average. The server was nice, but seemed indifferent, maybe had too many tables or something. I wouldn't eat here again; for better Mexican food there are neighborhoods that have tons of good, authentic Mexican or Tex-Mex cuisine. EL Vez is located in a prime spot in downtown. The interiors are stunning. We had to negotiate to get a decent table, as there were many empty tables but we were being squished in a busy area. First off, this restaurant is HUGE! I would say if you had a large event gathering planned this place would be able to easily accommodate your party. There was a party of 8 before us and that party + our party of 2 got seated right away without any wait time. We ordered the Tito Santana guacamole and it was great - has a kick of spice but tolerable enough for those who can't handle much spice. Then the Tacos al Carbon for 2 was delicious. We decided to get two different proteins (beef and shrimp) and those two meats were cooked to perfection! The beef was seasoned well and juicy/just the right amount cooked throughout the meat, and the shrimp was light and fluffy - not overcooked and bouncy which was great. There were grilled veggies below the meats and those were tasty as well. Only concern was that if someone uses the photo booth closer to the entrance room, then the people inside one of the next rooms can see all of the flashing lights - the rooms are purposely dimly lit for a warm vibe so the flashes feel like if someone is taking a flash photo next to you! I had the best Galentine's Day dinner here with my bestie! We love El Vez, but haven't been since COVID. They have a great setup for outdoor dining, so we decided to try it! They have individual greenhouses with heating and cute Fiesta decorations inside. We were super warm and didn't need to where our coats. We got the frozen blood orange margarita pitcher. It is a great deal! One is $14 and a pitcher is $50, so it is definitely worth it if you are planning on having 3 margs each. Dogs shouldn't be allowed in restaurants at all, I had the misfortune to be seated next to an entitled couple that treated their dog as a human. I understand one love their pets but this is beyond DISGUSTING, the dog's paws and nose were all over the table, the leash was also in the picture, the last I want is to go to a restaurant and being exposed to unbeknownst diseases that dogs carry. The server told them multiple times to place the dog under the table and they ignored her, the DOH have strict protocols and guidelines about pets on restaurants, for a reason.
