Her daughter runs the shop now down the street from the original location. The mermaid is still outside and the inside is so quaint! We talked with the owners for a while and he reminisced about his experiences growing up. I got the ice cream sandwich with triple chocolate, and it was absolutely to die for! Holy cow! This is the best Marion Berry Cobbler I have ever had! Went back again the second day of our trip for more! The people are great! Very nice and you can tell they are proud of their food! Some outdoor seating. No indoor seating. Great for takeout! Make sure you aren't taking out too far though if you get your cobbler with ice cream. After seeing a review about the marionberry cobbler, we had to go. And it was worth it, the cobbler has the perfect crunch to the crust, gooey middle and perfectly cooked berries. The owner, Tom, will warm it up to the perfect temperature and top it with just the right amount of ice cream. We also got an ice cream sandwich with chocolate cookies and maple nut ice cream. It was amazing! The dog even got a little scoop of vanilla and loved every bite. This little hole in the wall is the perfect stop after a beautiful sunny day. They have great hot dogs and ice cream, but they do close early so think lunch not dinner. They also have a fun arcade if you like that. What a gem. We were greeted by the owner who proudly boasted her families ownership over the place for several decades. She was friendly and charming. She listed off the specials and house made goodies but seemed to instantly know we were here for the chowder. Now this chowder has a buzz about town. It's rather amusing Eleanor's is located across from Mo's who claim that they have the best chowder on the coast. I wholeheartedly disagree with that claim as I have found their chowder about as unappetizing as chowder can come. Eleanor's on the other hand, now this is chowder. It's creamy, heavy on sweet clams, light on potato and the flour has all been cooked out! Delicious! We also had some halibut sandwiches and their special sauce which was slightly spicy, a weclomed change from traditional tartar sauce. Prices are under $10. You order up at the counter and they'll call you when it's ready. We didn't wait too long. They have an ice cream shop too with malt shakes. Eleanor's only accepts cash and seating is limited. They have whimsical items for sale and two pool tables in the back. The rumor is that the chowder sells out quick so she recommends coming early because once they are out for the day you'll have to wait for a fresh batch the next. Oh, and the monstrous fresh baked cookies are sweet, chewy, soft with crispy edges and 100% perfect. Don't miss out. read more

We are taste testing chowder along the coast so this review is for only a cup of clam chowder. This is truly homemade. Celery, onions, potatoes, and of course clams, lumpy, bumpy, stock full of goodies. Not necessarily creamy per se but it doesn't need to be. Husband really enjoyed the homemade qualities of this soup, saying clam chowder isn't necessarily flavorful. Personally I found it to be more like potato soup (gritty like potato soup) and would prefer a bit more spices. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. They have many classic games that take tokens like air hockey, pac man and pool. The hours seem to change a fair amount based on season and weather which is fair since it is the Oregon Coast. There is a respectable menu and decent ice cream selection. I can't remember he last time I had a meal here- so no feedback on the food. I absolutely love their giant chocolate chip cookies , just perfect. They are a cash only establishment (checks with ID) but there is an ATM in the building. Come in to grab some taffy or let your kids play arcade games- some of my best memories as a child. read more

Oh my gosh!!! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We originally were planning on going to Mo's but the line was so ridiculously long. So we decided to come here instead and let me tell you. It was probably the best decision ever!!! This place is so much better than Mo's and inexpensive. The ladies here are sooo adorable and so sweet. Food is delicious and their cookies are to die for! The only downfall to this restaurant is that they only take cash, but there is an ATM inside the restaurant. With the fee I could buy another cookie or so. But it's all worth it. Finally stopped in Elanor's Undertow for some desert. We always stay next door at the Looking Glass Inn, but usually missed them when they are open (hours are from 11:30 am - 5:00 pm I think). BF and I wanted some afternoon ice cream so he got a Hot Fudge Sundae (yum) and I ended up getting Marionberry Cobbler A la Mode. As much as I love ice cream, I can't pass up a good cobbler (truly my downfall.....). My cobbler was excellent - not too sweet, but just the right amount of berries and crust. The scoop of Tillamook Vanilla ice cream added to the side was perfect. Warm berry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream....seriously one of my fav deserts ever. BF scarfed his sundae down pretty quickly so I'll take his word on how good it was. It sure looked delicious..... Decor is kitchy (kids will love it) and the service was incredibly friendly. Overall a great place to stop by for some ice cream after going to the beach. They also serve hamburgers and hot dogs, so we may give that a try next time. read more

We love staying at the Looking Glass Inn which is literally a hop skip and a jump from there..its our go to lunch either to take back to our room or stay and eat and chat with the owners. Located on the slightly ramshackle side on SW 51st in the Taft beachfront (the definitely non-Mo's side), it's a corner cafe with burgers, fish and chips, and ice cream. Half of the space is seating at small tables. The other half, behind gift shelves, has pool tables and arcade games. You order at the counter. No alcohol served,very welcoming to kids. The clam chowder is outstanding - light and imbued with garlic and bacon. The fish and chips looked great but I was in the mood for a cheeseburger which was perfectly good and a bargain at about $5. You dress the burger yourself at the counter - be sure to add the sweet pickles! The same family has run it for over 30 years. They're extremely friendly and proud of their business. read more

I took my family here based on a recommendation from the the owner of 101 Burgers. After an amazing lunch with him we walked down the street to get some ice cream. The place is a lot of fun, lots of decorations, mermaids, arcade games and of course, ice cream. The employees were very friendly and the I've cream was great. We ordered single scoops and they were way bigger than I expected! We then took a relaxing stroll along the beach which is right next to this fine establishment. We were on Hwy 101 doing the Spring Break thing with the kids and we were on a hunt for ice cream. Not Diary Queen ice cream. No siree. The kids were adamant that we find one of those local swanky kinds of ice cream shops that one can only find at the beach. The shops on 101 weren't helpful as the only ice cream place was closed. "Random" as one shop owner replied when I asked why it was closed in the middle of spring break. My daughter remembered this place across from Mo's. A five minute car ride later, and we were standing outside this candy cane striped building with a door that wouldn't quite close all the way. The name intrigues me as I think perhaps we were caught in a time machine disguised as an undertow. Entering reminded me of scenes in a movie with the old 1950's soda fountain shops. This one may even have had some of the same furniture and equipment from the '50s. The folks working behind the counter also seemed to be of that era. Working with a smile and "what can I get for you, honey?" greeting was enough to make us all want to stay. I don't know if that was Elinore, but she was a kick. Four ice cream cones, one milkshake, and order of fries and a cup of chowder later, we were all glad we remembered this place. We weren't in the mood for arcade games, but we could easily have been entertained for hours if we had. We even bought a few funny greeting cards, but left the mood rings for someone else's treasure. read more

We came in for a quick lunch but had the surprise of a lifetime. The food was ok, nothing to go crazy over. The service was friendly; this was obviously a family run place and they treated you like an old friend. I had the fish and chips, my wife had the bacon cheese burger. The cheese was a slice of processed cheese, which to us is a bit of a faux pas when building a burger (cheddar is better!). The fish was very similar to what you would get from the frozen food isle in the grocery store. The fries were very similar to those at A&W. The food would only get about 3-3.5 stars from me. The real surprise, and the true qualifier for the five star rating was the Marion Berry cobbler (a la mode) that I ordered for dessert. I saw it go to a few tables near us and had to try it. WOW!!! That was by far the best desert I've ever had in any restaurant, anywhere, ever!! My hat's off to the maker; this is a world class dish! If you like blackberry or mulberry anything, do not pass this up; you'll be sad you did. Don't eat it all though; be sure to leave a piece for me in case I'm in the neighbourhood. read more
