I had upgraded my gas furnace less than 10 years ago, but this time around, I decided to make the switch to a heat pump. It's cut down my emissions and I get AC--win-win. I went out for four bids, and Element was the last one. The equipment and pricing were all over the place, and honestly, I was getting pretty frustrated by the time Ernest from Element showed up. From the start, he stood out. While others barely glanced at the attic, Ernest went straight up there and spent more time than anyone else had. When he came down, he pointed out two big things: first, my system needed increased airflow, and second, getting the old unit out was going to be a tight squeeze. I could tell he actually cared about the details. He recommended the smallest unit that had been bid so far, which surprised me. I brought up efficiency concerns because another model seemed better on paper. But Ernest explained that for our specific climate, heating performance mattered more--and the smaller unit he recommended was actually more efficient in that context. When I got Element's quote, it wasn't the cheapest--but it was the most complete. It included everything: permits, inspections, even replacing three ducts. There were no surprises. I had a few more questions before moving forward, and Ernest took his time answering every single one. We moved into a new home last November that was substantially bigger than our previous rental apartment. We were much colder than we had anticipated, given both the increase in space and the antiquated (35 years old!) furnaces that it came came with. Worse, still, was the weighty PG&E bill that came through just a few weeks later. Ouch. As things started to warm up, we started exploring options to replace our 36 year old furnaces which we knew were a ticking time-bomb in the fear of having to house my Southern Californian in-laws who would not tolerate anything but a balmy 72. We spoke to 13 different vendors, based on Yelp searches and those little coupon books that we seem to get monthly in our mailbox. Element was one of those coupon book vendors but when I went to look them up on Yelp, I was pleasantly surprised. Ernest came out in spring and spent over an hour with us, measuring the size of our registers, inspecting all of our ductwork, and answering all of the questions I had about what kind of improvement we could expect. Then, we waited. There are a lot of decision points to make: should we replace our ducting, what kind of ducting should we get, heat pump or furnace, what efficiency furnace, AC or not? Half a dozen other projects happened over the summer and as the days drew shorter, I decided to go ahead and resurrect our furnace discussion. The benefit of waiting over the summer was that we discovered AC wasn't really necessary where our house is, due to the tree cover that keeps the house cooler. However, the air quality in the Lamorinda area was about as bad as anticipated (200+ AQI), with the now unfortunate annual wildfires. This, plus some consulting with both Ernest and our pest control contractor, helped us decide on: new aluminum ducting (rat proof!), a high efficiency furnace, no AC for now (but a coil so that we could easily install it later), plus some pretty heavyweight IQAir filtration. Unfortunately due to all of the supply chain issues, the price for our estimate went up by $2K or so since we originally reached out. That said, not installing central AC saved us $7K or so - so waiting was likely the right decision. Element's quote came in very competitively against other vendors, who were cheaper on the furnaces but more expensive on the ductwork. What I liked about Element (and Ernest's salesmanship) was the numerical and very professional way they approached the system design for our home and how duct sizing was based on solid engineering principles. I was a little wary about the duct work (it is not cheap) This professionalism carried through to the crew who came and did the install, and their office manager Mac. We had a few issues during and after the install - because this is the real world after all - and Mac and the team made sure to follow up on each of these. Our water heater went out and so we had no hot water for a couple of days. We weren't able to relight it ourselves and it turns out it needed a new ignition unit - the team at Element sent a technician over and a plumber when that failed. There were a few small cosmetic blemishes left over (marks on the wall, and some construction mess in our subarea) that they fixed immediately when prompted. We also were missing an overflow valve on the AC unit that caused inspection to fail, but they came out and installed that before scheduling another inspection which passed. So far, in two weeks of having this new heating system, we are very very happy. The house heats up from 62 in the morning to 70/71 much quicker than before. The system is about 1/5th of the noise of the previous system - with the new fatter ducts, there is almost no discernible "whoosh". The house heats evenly too - areas of the house that would get too warm before are now about right, and our living room with a high ceiling actually gets comfortably warm. The furnaces seem considerably more energy efficient too - using about 2/3rds the natural gas despite the fact that we typically run them for twice as long! Our electricity usage is a few kWh lower each day too. Overall, pretty happy with Element and their work. I wish this sort of project didn't cost nearly as much but hopefully we can stretch these furnaces another 35 years ;-). read more

After the work is complete, Ernest continue to support us to clarify when there's some minor clarification needed and he's been extremely responsive even on weekends. Jorge came in an did our initial estimate. He was straight forward, honest and quick. He outlined the problem, which I new already from inspection reports and from other companies who gave estimates who reported the same problem. We needed all new ducts. It was costly and they were priced around everyone else. We decided to use Element Home Solutions because I trusted that Jorge could get the job done right! His team came in and installed all new ducts, adjusted airflow throughout the house, and cleaned up after they left. They did an amazing job! They even fixed our dryer flap which was broken. 5 Plus stars. I was hesitant to use them with very few Yelp reviews, but I'm SO glad that I took the chance because they were very thorough and efficient. Hired Element to do an attic clean-out and insulation job in April. I was happy to see they also do HVAC, so I also had them cover the exterior AC line set another contractor failed to complete. They did a great job in both cases. Having your attic cleaned out is extremely invasive work, but these guys were fast, efficient, and clean. They covered and tented everything off. Overall, this was a two-day job and they left the job site pristine both days. Very happy with Element and would definitely recommend them. read more

Our old gas furnace sputtered and died. We called Element Home Solutions based on a recommendation from friends. Cesar came out within a couple of days, made a careful appraisal, asked a few questions, and answered all of ours. Five days later an Element Home Solutions team of about a dozen courteous, skilled professionals showed up promptly at the appointed time and went right to work. We needed to replace our 19 year old furnace. Working with Ernest, he explained why it would be important to also replace our air ducts with larger diameter ducts. The price quoted was comprehensive, complete, and competitive. Following award of contract, the the workers arrived as scheduled, and completely replaced all our ducts and vents, and replaced our furnace in one day. My existing HVAC system was very old and the previous owners weren't taking care of rodent control so a lot of the ducts in the crawl space were chewed by rodents. That made the AC system even worse. There are a lot of great local HVAC in the East Bay. I needed both a new furnace and wanted to add air conditioning. I live on the side of a hill, multiple stories. A challenge for any firm. We even had some who backed off. Not Element. No fear. They took charge of not only installing the systems, but also the additional obligations like electrical work and building an outdoor concrete pad for the AC unit. They fielded all my questions. They were patient while I did my homework. Post installation, they handled the inspections and permits and the necessary paperwork. Putting these systems into your home is a big deal. We hired Element Home Solutions for replacing a furnace and adding air conditioning and a high quality air filter. The salesperson (Jorge) seemed straight forward and efficient and he ended up also being the leader in the team of installers. He and his team were great to work with, he treated his team well, and they worked hard to complete the job as stated. I really liked that Jorge took time to discuss routing of new electrical conduit, new cooling lines and existing heating ducts with me because I can be detail oriented and wanted the best appearance possible. Jorge was also gracious in answering questions while the installation was in process. Element did a good job and was conscientious about making things look nice and cleaning up afterward. Efficient, straight to the point, get things done in a timely manner. I had an urgent electrical upgrade at the attic and needed to 1) suck out all the insulation, and 2) put back insulation after electrical upgrade. When I called Element Home, they were able to get Eduardo to eval and quoted me in the afternoon of the same day. On the day for Part 1, they came on time and sucked out all the insulation. My furnace went out just before Christmas, a fact that compiicated the process of getting a company to even evaluate my situation. But the first time I called Elements they sent someone that afternoon. The news wasn't good: the old furnace was dead. Of course, I wanted to be a good consumer, so I didn't give Elements the go ahead for some time trying to read their reviews and trying to get other estimates. Finally, because of the excellent customer reports and one estimate that came in around the same price, I hired Elements Home Solutions to replace my furnace. (It was after New Years, so I was tired of using space heaters.) When they came, their team was organized and thorough and respectful of moving through my entire house. They had electricians to handle some of the old wiring in this house, too. They took care of that. They were always on time and left the scene very clean. They finished in one day. Ernest was prompt, professional, and thorough in his evaluation of our air conditioning unit. He diagnosed the problem quickly and replaced a capacitor. He showed what a new capacitor looks like as well as the burned out one in our unit so we'd know what he did. He went further on his own (with our consent) to check our whole HVAC system. He explained how the whole system worked and told us what was operating and installed well and estimated the life span of each part. He was both under the house (no small feat) and in the attic examining duct work. He pointed out a problem with the size of our attic cold air return that was starving and thus straining the air conditioner. He took pictures of the duct in question so that we could see what he was talking about and then he ran the system in a way that demonstrated the problem and solution in a way we could feel the added output a repair would make. We authorized the repair. The Technician arrived promptly. He explained what he would do and put down plastic to protect our home before going in the attic. When he completed the repair, he showed us pictures of the work he did and did a system check before leaving. I am extremely happy with Element Home Solutions! I worked with them on installing air conditioning for my house. Because I already had a setup with ducts, I was planning on it being less expensive than it was. However, the representative, who I really liked, said the AC would be a lot more efficient if I replaced the furnace (which was old) and the ducts, which were extremely small. He was clear though that a new furnace was not necessary if I did not want to have that extra expense. Because of this, I trusted him, and I am glad that I did. The new furnace is far superior to my old one, and in fact, my PG&E bill actually has stayed the same or been lower, even though I ran the AC nonstop for the first three months of having it. Given this, my bill should have been through the roof! I called to ask EHS if my PG&E bill was so good because of the more energy efficient furnace that I bought. The manager checked my paperwork before saying yes, and then told me that I had in fact purchased the most energy efficient furnace. Separate from this, the team that did the installation was fantastic. They were so careful and nice to deal with. They left my place immaculate after, took away all of the old ducts, of course, and seemed like perfectionists. I am very happy with EHS. I spent more than I had intended, but my friend who is a contractor said their pricing was correct, and honestly, it is the best money ever spent. Not sure how I lived without AC before.
