Heidi was very friendly and accommodating upon our arrival. We ran into Marco at dinner and he was also very personable, even remembered we spoke on the phone. Chef Crista was also too kind, we asked for a later check out to explore the Redwoods one last time and she didn't hesitate to let us stay a little longer. We will definitely be back to this oasis in the hills. Only 4 minutes away from a beautiful forest and 30 to Jenner. You really can't go wrong here! Such good vibes. The room was very spacious and they have quality toiletries. The simple breakfast that they provide also gives you the fuel to start your day! Unfortunately, I didn't request and spa services so that will have to be next time. And finally an adults only hotel where you are actually treated like an adult with the honor bar and 24 hour pool/spa. Plus furry friend friendly!

He's the best! He needs a raise! I've stayed at several other resorts here but this is by far my favorite. The property is well maintained, super relaxing and grounding. They have bikes to take into town which are also well maintained. Rooms are really cute and the place is dog friendly. The pool has a chill ambiance with a curated playlist. Their honor bar is a really nice touch as well. Highly recommend this place!

Great welcome by staff and given informative rundown of resort. Our cabin was cozy and the gas fireplace turned on when needed. Cabin was spotless with everything needed for our stay. Before booking, I called the resort multiple times to make sure I understood all of the pet policies. I spoke with a younger woman at the front desk and confirmed that two dogs were allowed, verified the pet fees, and reviewed the rules. The room rate I saw online was $179, and I was told the pet fee was $100, bringing my total to approximately $279. I specifically called several times to confirm these details before making the reservation. The problems began when we arrived. We had driven about three hours and arrived before check-in. We were not expecting early access to our room. We simply planned to park, let the dogs out, use the restroom, and then go get lunch in town until check-in time. As soon as we opened our vehicle doors, an older woman (Kathy I believe was her name) approached us in the parking lot and immediately began reprimanding us that our dogs needed to be on leash. We had literally just opened the doors and had the leashes in our hands. The interaction quickly escalated, and she told us we were not allowed on the property. When I explained that I had a reservation and had specifically booked a dog-friendly room, she appeared skeptical and challenged me about the reservation, asking for my name in a way that felt accusatory and uncomfortable. I completely understand the importance of enforcing rules and protecting the property. Responsible pet owners should absolutely follow resort policies. However, there is a significant difference between communicating rules professionally and treating guests as though they are doing something wrong before they've even stepped out of their vehicle. The entire experience left us feeling unwelcome from the moment we arrived. To make matters worse, when reviewing my charges afterward, I discovered I had been billed over $400 for a room I was told would cost approximately $279 including pet fees. I am still trying to understand the discrepancy, but the final charge was significantly higher than what had been explained to me when I booked. Between the unexpected charges, the abrasive treatment at check-in, and the overall feeling that guests with dogs were viewed as a problem rather than welcomed customers, this was not an enjoyable stay. Had we known we would be paying this much and be treated this way, we honestly would have preferred camping or staying elsewhere. I respect that resorts must protect their property and establish rules, but guests who make the effort to call ahead, confirm policies, and pay additional pet fees deserve to be treated with courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, that was not our experience at Highlands Resort.

Not inviting so we sat at a high boy in the darkened bar, which was much nicer. I'm sure it's beautiful to sit on the balcony in the summer on warm nights. We chatted with the German owner who was doubling as a bartender, who was very nice. We loved the German influences in the bar, as we had just been to Oktoberfest in Munich. The owner's daughter Sarah runs the kitchen. My husband had a pork tenderloin schnitzel "Vienna style" ($20) and I had a jaegerschnizel with mushroom gravy ($20) and both were excellent. We split the potato pancakes (two with sour cream and apple sauce, $12) which were served crispy but tasty. They had a nice German beer and wine list. We finished with a delicious apple strudel to complete a lovely meal. I recommend this restaurant for tasty dinners in a unique venue.

So many issues affecting…read moreour satisfaction, comfort and overall experience we had. * The ceiling is half painted in one color and half painted in another. Obvious recent patching done to the ceiling. Patching was done poorly, and the paint cover up was worse (picture attached). * It was a hot day, attempted to close the blinds. 2 of 3 blinds would not close. Frustrating. Managed to get only 1 down half mast. * No battery in our smoke detector. (picture attached) * There were cups wrapped in plastic next to sink. There was a spider INSIDE of the plastic wrap. It was revolting. (picture attached) * Vanity looked new but top drawer would not open and close. The cabinet drawers were not aligned and unstable. Further, the insides of the drawers were already soiled and stained. (pictures attached) * No drawers for clothes. Where do we put our T-shirts? Underwear? Shorts? Pajamas? Lived out of suitcase. * No soap dish next to the sink. All of these, individually experienced, might have been trivial. However, collectively, they add up to an experience of being in a cheap motel. These were not the major issues. The three major issues we had were the flooring, the musty odor in the room and the dirty bathtub. * Floor was dirty. My wife took a picture of her socks after wearing them for under an hour. They were white socks and the feet were BLACK. (picture attached - this is not altered or edited in any way). * Musty smell. Like it had not been aired out in some time. * The bathtub was dirty, just unacceptable. Unfortunately, there is more but you get the picture. Caveat Emptor.

This little guest house was just perfect for our 1 night stay in the Russian River Valley. The home had everything we needed- couch, tv/movies, kitchen, comfy bed and an additional sofa bed, cuteness throughout, great patio with a chiminea to keep you warm, and was nestled in a little country town in the woods of Monte Rio. You can walk to the river which is down the road, and you can rent kayaks for the day as well. Cecile, the owner, lives on the property, but this was still very private. She let us stay until 3:30pm on our day of "check-out". We walked a block to dinner at Cafe les Jumelles (see my review), but when the weather is good you should bring groceries and cook a meal at home, and eat under the stars outside. I also highly recommend breakfast or lunch at a wonderful restaurant down the road a bit called the Garden Grill. http://www.yelp.com/biz/garden-grill-guerneville#hrid:dVw0Lds83zFX0cuHvp9pEA I highly recommend staying here for a great get-away. The cottage itself is adorable, clean, and includes all the essentials (towels, dishes, kitchen, clean linens, etc.) The patio in between the rooms is really cute and feels secluded. Cecile, the owner, has a house on the front of the property, and she couldn't have been nicer about answering our questions about Monte Rio and the other nearby Russian River towns. We probably wouldn't have even seen her if we had not gone out of our way. Monte Rio is cute, quaint, walkable little town. That said, it has plenty of food/resturants and a crazy little local dive bar and movie theatre right nearby. Guerneville (the main little town in Russian River) is also only about 4 miles away and includes more options (a small brewery, sporting options, Armstrong Redwoods, a bookstore, lots of restaurants, etc.) The entire area is a great escape from the city and is only about 1 1/2 hours away! And I would definitely recommend the Garden Cottage Duo over a nearby hotel or inn.
