Wow! Finally got a chance to try this place. Last couple times we could NOT find parking, so their warning about walking or ridesharing here is very real. However, it's not too difficult to uber over from the rest of downtown for a few bucks. Safe to say I think it was definitely worth the price to rideshare over here. It's certainly a lowkey spot--on a weekday night it seemed not busy at all, but you'll see it get packed during the weekends. The ambience inside is super cute and great for a date night. Menu is pretty simple, but everything sounds good! The food all tasted super fresh and ingredients were high quality. I really liked the Winter Squash and the Malfadine--the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and portion size was pretty decent for a restaurant of this type. The caesar was quite interesting, but don't expect your typical caesar salad dressing--it was on the more acidic side but almost refreshing in a way. Overall I thought prices were pretty reasonable for the quality of food and the great service. Their menu changes quite often so keep in mind the dishes in these reviews are often subject to change, but it does look like many things are menu staples. Getting here can be a little more effort, but definitely give it a try at least once to see if you'll be back! read more

We were in town one night prior to leaving on a cruise. My wife picked out Ellie's based on reviews and we were really looking forward to a fine Italian dining experience. We had reservations, but still had to wait 30 minutes, which was a little surprising. But to their credit, it's a small restaurant and they can't help if people sit for a long time after their meal. We started with a Caesar salad salad and a baby beet salad. The baby beet salad was our favorite dish of the entire night. Great flavor and textures. I'm a big fan of Caesar salad salads and this was not one of the best. They put some type of spice on it that really detracted from it. It made it entirely too spicy to eat. I chose the Angel hair pasta, and my wife had the tagliatelle. The Angel hair was supposed to come with muscles clams and lobster. There was a total of five pieces of seafood in the entire pasta and they were all very small. Quite disappointing for a fine dining experience. The angel hair was also lacking enough seasoning. My wife liked her tagliatelle but also said she's had a lot better. We ended with the tiramisu which was good. Overall we were disappointed in what is touted as fine dining and comes with a higher end cost, but delivered a lot less. read more

We ordered 2 tagliatelle dish to share between 3 people- but I practically had one whole dish to myself the brussel sprouts was perfectly crispy and cooked in bacon oil - NOT salty at all and the shrimp & melon salad. My goodness- SUCH A GREAT STARTER. It doesn't sound so great but when you take a bite, it's like eating a refreshing Mediterranean salad with an Italian twist to it. I met my friends at Ellie's for lunch on a Sunday . We were seated upon arrival. Our server was great and very funny. We ordered 4 dishes to share. They brought the chilaquiles first which were very tasty, then we had the shrimp and melon salad which was refreshing. Then we continue with the Ellie's omelette which was so far my favorite. I honestly can't believe I haven't left a review for Ellie's yet as I've been a few times and have always had an excellent experience. For brunch: The shrimp and melon is sooo refreshing and delicious. It's giving "fresh with a little kick." Their crispy potatoes are also so good and a fairly big portion so it's definitely shareable. Their crab toast was so appetizing and fresh -- you can tell the quality is high all around. For my main dish I ordered the chilaquiles and was happy to see chicken already came included as I feel a lot of places often charge extra to add protein to chilaquiles. For lunch/dinner stand outs include: bone marrow board, bread and butter and mafaldine pasta. I'm not sure if it's limited time or not but I recently went to their oyster hour with a friend (Tues-Fri 4:00-6:00pm, Sat & Sun 3:00-5:00pm) and was so glad I did. Their oysters are $1.50 during this time which is an absolute steal! A dozen oysters for ~$18? YES PLS. We also got the parker house rolls which were so flipping good and had the texture of Raising Cane's toast but like 100x better. Lastly, we got their fish and chips which came out piping hot and were the perfect comfort food vibe. They also have $8 glasses of red, white, rosé or sparkling during this time frame too. So had this place saved for a while now. Then I played Golf with couple fellas I just met that day and they recommended it. I believe it was Jake or Jacob who told me and my friend about this place. So today was the day I had a day off and came down and had one of the best eats I had in a while. First time at Ellie's for brunch with my partner and we were immediately seated as it wasn't busy on a early Saturday afternoon. We chose indoor seating as it was a bit hot outdoors. However, outdoor seating is pretty ideal as well due to good amount of shade with umbrellas & heating lanterns on colder days. Parking is all around Ellie's but didn't see a dedicated lot for the restaurant. We parked in a nearby residential street and walked over. Most parking around is free with some parking that has parking meters. Service here is decent but not overly the best. Our server took our order pretty quickly but food took a bit to come out despite the restaurant not being busy. Staff didn't check in on our table throughout the entire brunch which was displeasing. 1. Breakfast Pasta - First dish that came out presentation is decent for this dish. However, it didn't seem any special from any other pastas around. While the truffle & breadcrumbs was a nice extra touch to the pasta to provide more crunch to the bite, the pasta felt a bit bland compared to other pastas I've had. Not the best, but not the worse either. 6/10 2. Shrimp & Melon Salad - This dish took me by surprise, super refreshing, a mouthful of flavors, and big portions. The shrimp mixed with the various melons is surprisingly a perfect match for a palate cleanser. Highly recommend as this is perfect for a hot day. 10/10 3. Bruschetta Benedict - The standout dish of the meal. The poached egg on top of the bruschetta is perfect. Melts super easily, and mixes really well with the hollandaise & burrata sauce. Our group had a great dinner at Ellie's in Long Beach during a special menu night. We tried two different pasta dishes, a fish entrée, oysters, and the bone marrow board. Everything was delicious. The bone marrow was definitely a standout. It was rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We also finished with a small dessert that was simple but tasty. Service was great throughout the evening. Multiple staff members checked in on our table, and everything came out quickly and smoothly. The only downside (and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5) is the parking situation. There's no dedicated lot, and since the restaurant is tucked into a residential area with lots of apartments, finding a spot can be a real challenge. The Food: Since my friend and I couldn't decide between quite a few dishes, we ended up ordering family style and sharing everything. - Melon and Shrimp Salad: YUM. I am quite the crab enthusiast, and this dish fit the bill. The meat was so succulent and fresh, and I really enjoyed the bread they used. - Bolognese Benedict: this dish caught my eye on the menu, as I've never had this flavor combination together. My friend was a bit indifferent about this one, but I really enjoyed the contrast between the savory sauce and slightly sweet rolls. Ambiance: We opted to sit outside since the weather was so lovely. While I enjoyed the sunshine and breeze, I wish they had more shade umbrellas to fully cover the entire patio. We were also constantly swatting at flies that were trying to land on our food, which ended up being quite distracting. I'd noticed that some other tables had fans to keep flies away, so we ended up asking for 2, which did help resolve the issue. Kind of odd that it wasn't automatically offered to us, though. Parking: I'd read other reviews beforehand and was a bit apprehensive about the parking situation, but the parking gods were in my favor that day, and I found free street parking about a block and a half away on a weekend afternoon. Doors opened so some flies kept being in the space. Service fine not organized and one of the employees was wearing a very revealing shirt. Not sure what was the dress code. I've booked marked this place for a long time & finally got to try it couple of nights ago. Hubby & I came here for HH. I've read reviews that parking is hard to find but we got super lucky & found a spot right away. Place was empty when we walked in at 5pm but got busier as time flew by. Ambiance is small with limited seating but they got outdoor patio seating. Weather was warm outside so we sat indoors but it was pretty hot inside too with no AC. Thankfully, the food won us over. We started off with oysters, Peruvian scallops, & crab dip off the HH menu. I've had better oysters elsewhere but it was still fresh. Scallops were really good. Crab dip was solid & I really liked the soft texture of the milk bread. It paired well with the crab dip. From the main menu, we ordered the angel hair pasta & waygu tartare. These 2 dishes were my fav of the night. The pasta came with main lobster & shrimp. It was simply delicious & not filling. Noodles were cooked perfectly. The garlic & chili flakes added a nice flavor to the dish. The waygu tartare was so good. I was impressed with the sourdough bread turning out so soft & not hard to bite into. Although I don't live far, this was my first time to check out Ellie's and did so during restaurant week as their special was enticing and I knew I should get over there at some point. For the LB Food week special the appetizers were two seafood items- an oyster and a scallop served separately and beautiful. Both delicious but the oyster's drizzle of lime, cucumber, jalapeno and dotted with ikura (roe) was particularly enchanting. Great for me that my dining companion doesn't like oysters. Bring them on! Chilled, small, and tangy. My experience says leave the big oysters for frying! The scallop sauce was tangy and delish as well with a splash of chili oil. The last appetizer was a parker house roll, which was good but I prefer regular bread. But it was nicely grilled and had a nice whipped butter calabrian chili spread on the side. It was petite so no worries about it killing your appetite. You choose one of the two pasta dishes for sharing (you can order both for extra $$) but we opted for just the pappardelle. The pasta itself was fresh but I found the simple sundried tomatoes and garlic confit sauce a tad on the plain side. But a nice portion to share. The tri-tip apparently was the popular selection for this menu over the swordfish which is always on the menu. Lamb was also an option for extra but we both went for the tri-tip and kudos to the chef that it was prepared perfectly. The heirloom tomatoes with tiny slices of pepper were a nice contrast. The dessert not listed on the menu handout was a refreshing strawberry compote (perhaps not the correct food term) but it was a nice light dairy dessert with fresh strawberries albeit it would be great with little used rhubarb. Service was good. The little electronic fly swatters on most tables is irritating but understandable albeit not too many flies bothered us. Maybe that was the point! Super cute place with ample patio seating. Yes, you can bring your (little) dog but be mindful that it's first come/first serve so you and your pet may have to be seated elsewhere if the dog vibes get out of hand, which is what happened last night. Luckily, Ellie's has two patio sections and everyone was happy. Also, note, that Ellie's suggest that if you need transportation to get here, consider an Uber/Lyft. Residential parking takes up most of the immediate area. Long Beach bus #121 drops off on Ocean Blvd, which is 4 or so blocks away. read more

This was my second visit to Ellie's, and it was even better than I remembered. It was a perfect evening to sit out on the patio and enjoy the atmosphere. We started with the fresh burrata and Parker House rolls--both were absolutely delicious! I mean, who doesn't love warm, freshly baked bread? The mafaldine pasta was just okay. While the texture of the fresh pasta was great, the flavors were a bit too simple and could've used a little more depth. The New York steak, however, was excellent--perfectly seasoned, and the garnishes really brought out the richness of the meat. We ordered the bread pudding for dessert, you probably can skip that. I visited Ellie's on a Tuesday afternoon around 4 PM and was seated indoors. The restaurant was fairly quiet at that hour, so I expected attentive service, unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I ordered the burger and fries. Visually, the burger was impressive and looked exactly like something you'd want to dig into. However, the salt level was overwhelming to the point where I genuinely could not finish it. What made matters worse was that our server was not attentive with refilling our waters, and when you're working through an extremely salty dish, hydration isn't optional. I left the meal feeling dehydrated and honestly a little frustrated. The bright spot of the visit was the Brussels sprouts, which were genuinely well done and showed some real kitchen care. If I were to return, I'd probably stick to the vegetable sides. For a restaurant with a 4 PM lull and minimal table traffic, there's no excuse for that level of inattentiveness. A simple water refill and a quick check in would have saved the experience. As it stands, the combination of an over salted entrée and absent service made for a tough sell on the value. If you're in the area craving a burger, you might want to save your money and head down the street to Louis Burger instead. Ellie's may shine in other areas; I've heard good things about the pasta, but this particular visit missed the mark. read more

I wish I had a better review to leave but this just isn't the case.... my girlfriend and I came here to try there prefixed menu during lunch and we legit were the only people there around 3pm. The service was good and our waiter tried his best so there's no complaints on that end. Our apps took about 30 minutes to hit our table and another 30 minutes to get our mains, both of which had hairs in them, amounting to 4 hairs in total....we didn't complain and just moved on trying to enjoy the meal. Given how long everything took, once the mains hit the table we asked for the desserts to be brought out. The desserts came out immediately, the chef decided strawberries and whip cream was the effort he'd put out after the beyond long wait for our food. The food itself wasn't bad, but given the hair in every dish it was hard to enjoy and look past. The lowest effort possible of strawberries and whip cream after such a long wait just felt like a slap in the face. I would say I'd be back to give this place another try but I'd be lying, I wish the experience was better but it was just such a let down. I've always found this spot to be very cute but incredibly hit or miss - sometimes the food is divine, other times it's bland. I went in yesterday and found it to be bland - there were no seasonings in the lasagna and it was served at room temperature which caused the meat to be a congealed patty consistency. I saved half the lasagna to rework at home and even after adding some salt, pepper, chili flakes, Italian seasoning, garlic, and fresh basil, the clumps of meat and overall dish was again uninspiring and had no desire to eat it. It absolutely did not look like the photos online which was another big disappointment. They were also out of oysters, two types of bottles of red, and I had to flag down the server to request chili flakes or powder as he didn't come by after dropping off the food. I also got the butterscotch dessert (butterscotch, whipped cream, and blood orange), took one bite and thought 'oh, I might as well have had a werthers'. It was nice to be seated outside, but I think our table could've used an umbrella because of how sunny and hot it got. Got the chilaquiles, hangar steak hash, and the French toast. I think the waiter said Ellie's has the best chilaquiles in Long Beach and I think he's right! The salsa was really good. I felt like it was seasoned perfectly and the chips were still really crispy. I think the hanger steak was good, I like the salsa the most, really smoky flavor, but the steak was a bit chewy. French toast was okay, nothing special, the pork butter was good but the French toast itself felt a bit dry. Didn't know whether to go either 2 or 3 starts but decided to err on the side of generosity. Its more like a 2.5/5 to be honest. Wife and I went here hoping to have a full dinner but ended bailing after the appetizers to cut our losses. We ordered two items: Wagyu Tartare: I order tartare any time its offered, maybe hundreds by now. This one tasted good enough, a little too tangy perhaps, but the presentation was absurd. It was a thin layer of tartare on grilled sourdough. I'm talking like a quarter inch of tartare, not a mound or a pile. The description included the bread, but I thought it would just be on the side. This is also pretty dumb because if you let it sit for even 5 minutes, it just makes the bread soggy. Do I really need to explain how tartare is typically presented? Bone Marrow Board: This was a strange one to say the least. The board had one tiny marrow bone roasted with herbs which maybe had like 1 or 2 bites in it (the star of the show!), a huge pile of more grilled sourdough, two small smears of butter, and random stuff from the pantry like mustard, cranberry relish, pickled onions and almonds. Look, I get it, I eat random ingredients too when I'm hungry but too tired to come up with something coherent. The two tiny bites of bone marrow tasted really good, I promise! Anyway, the whole experience felt really deceptive, like the restaurant was trying to maximize their profit margins by loading up dishes with cheap stuff like bread and sauces, instead of what anyone is actually paying money for. This was pretty transparent to us, so we stopped ordering after the appetizers and just left to spare us more disappointment. Everything at least tasted pretty decent, though I felt the kitchen was relying on strong tangy and garlicky flavors to avoid nuance, but that's a minor criticism. I dont expect Michelin starred food here. Please also fix the spelling errors on your menu, its unprofessional. The prices weren't low, but I'd rather pay $5 more and actually get that I ordered, instead of a dish that just seems like a bad faith trick on the customer. I've been to Ellie's once before with a different menu and it was considerably better. Everything else was decent - service, ambiance, wait times for food, etc. Anyway, we dont get out much anymore with the baby, so we went to Ramen Hub to salvage our date night and actually had fun. read more

I only really leave reviews if a place really stands out, both in a fantastic way, but in some cases, like Ellies in not the best ways. I'm hoping this was an off night for them because man, what a let down. This was my friend and my first time here and it was all over pretty rocky. To start, zero ac inside, we asked to move outside and they very quickly accommodated us which was great. We came for the LB week 3 course after seeing the menu online. I was looking forward to the Tuna entree but they had changed the fish, that's ok changes happen but my second choice was the steak... this was unfortunate because online it just listed it as an individual entree upcharge where at the location it was actually required to share and a double upcharge. So I ordered what was never a preference and got the replacement fish. On top of that there were some misleading wording about the pastas but that's ok, wasn't even the worst part. We ordered, along with some oysters and were excited to get started. Things started great with the table apps and wine but it was about 15 minutes after we finished those we thought we should check on those oysters, glad I did because they clearly weren't going to come out. Besides a few missing condiments to go with the oysters, the food was great up to this point. But, it was now over 40 minutes since our apps and the 2nd course (pasta) was no where to be found, better ask again. Another flag down. Both pastas came out about 5 minutes later having clearly just been cooked and both were underwhelming. There was mention of Italian sausage as a listed ingredient but as a Sicilian I can tell you, please don't bother listing this ingredient, it was microscopic at best. Another suprise came when the check hit the table and we had to inform the server we hadn't even received our entrees. It made sense though because even though we ordered around 720, it was now almost 9pm and they were closing. By the time the entrees came out (3 minutes before 9) the pace had been so slow we were just so annoyed we wanted to go home. We actually had to cancel the plans we had after dinner because it was getting too late. Honestly, the worst part was that there was no way they didn't know how long service was taking and there wasn't a single person that even said, "we're so sorry about the wait". We honestly understand things happen, but to completely pretend it's normal and not acknowledge that we had to keep asking about our food.... I got the Mafaldine which came in a spicy vodka sauce with burrata and chives on top. The pasta was fresh, the sauce was tasty and actually had a kick and the added burrata was good for a light, creamy balance. I would say the dish could be split among 2 portions if you wanted to! It was $27 which is a little pricey but it was worth trying once! It's worth noting that their pasta menu changes regularly. We were seated right away, but service moved very slowly. After letting our server know we needed more time to decide on drinks, we were never checked on again. The drinks menu and wine glasses were gradually taken without any follow-up. We traveled about an hour to try this place and didn't expect the meal to take close to two hours, especially since we had other plans afterward. We were understanding at first and could see that the restaurant was understaffed, so the wait itself wasn't the issue. However, after seeing two to three tables that were seated after us receive their pasta before we did, it became frustrating. Our toddler's food didn't arrive until over an hour after we were seated, and one of our two pasta dishes came out about 15 minutes after that. By then, we were already full and had to take one dish to go. We understand staffing challenges, but there was no acknowledgment for the delays. When the first pasta was dropped off, we were simply told the gnocchi would come soon, which felt dismissive given how long we had already been waiting. A quick check-in or apology would have gone a long way. As for the food, the wagyu tartare with black garlic aioli was good, and the burrata had a nice Calabrian chile kick, though the portion was small. We went here on a Sunday afternoon for dinner with a couple of friends. The parking here is very difficult, almost IMPOSSIBLE, because there are neighboring apartments and other small businesses. It is all street parking. Unless by some miracle you find one, you'd most likely have to park at least half a mile away and walk to the restaurant. The food was just OK. It felt like something you could whip up yourself at home in a couple of minutes with minimal effort. Nothing really stood out. We ordered Oysters, Burrata, Gnocchi, and Tagliatelle. The serving portions were tiny in my eyes. I still felt like I had to eat something afterwards to feel full. The service was amazing though. Very friendly staff, and they always checked up on us. Wait time was about 30 minutes to get everything to our table. They only have 1 gender neutral, shared bathroom, so be prepared to hold it in if there are a lot of customers. Because of the parking situation and the disappointment in food quality, we won't be going back. Summary: - BATHROOM. One shared, gender-neutral toilet. - CLEANLINESS. Clean tables outside and the utensils are wrapped in a table cloth. - COSTS. $$$ Expensive. - CUSTOMER SERVICE. The staff was friendly and prompt. This was the only reason they received a decent rating. - PARKING. Impossibly difficult. We had to park half a mile away near some gym and walk to the restaurant. You won't find parking at all unless you want to risk getting towed from the designated parking spots near the apartments. - FOOD QUALITY. Mediocre. Oysters were too salty/fishy. Pastas were just OK. - FOOD QUANTITY. Very small portions for the price. - WAIT TIME. About 30 minutes after ordering our food to receive all the meals. read more

After reading an article about Ginger's, my wife and I made a reservation to celebrate our anniversary. Ginger's is a small room that seats up to 12 diners at a communal table. It is only open for dinner and serves a prix fixe menu each night--the menu changes every 3 weeks. The food is prepared by the kitchen at Ellie's, which is run by the same chef. The food is eclectic. We dined on oysters, pork fritters, sashimi, honey-baked yams, wagyu steak, and a pumpkin parfait for dessert. Most of the dishes were very good. The dessert was a let-down. Sitting at a communal table allowed us to meet the other diners. Conversation flowed, and the room got very loud, because there was nothing to baffle the sound. The price of the meal is $85 per person, with a $50 per person optional wine pairing. Street parking is the only option. Leave time to find a parking space, which can be tough. read more

The pasta? Delicious. The carpaccio? Divine. The portions? Hilariously small--like, "is this a sample?" small. You'll leave full... of financial regret. Dessert absolutely slapped, and the wine list is solid (thankfully averagely priced so you can afford a glass to mourn your bank account). The vibes are chaotic. It's so loud you'll have to scream, mime, or learn sign language just to ask your date if they're enjoying themselves. Great if you're on a date you don't want to talk to. Service was fine, parking is a cruel joke (good luck with street parking), and honestly, unless you're trying to impress someone who thinks price equals quality, maybe save this one for when you win the lottery. What a quaint little restaurant with a nice neighborhood vibe. It's the perfect place to go to when walking and exploring Long Beach. We had 3 dishes (all with eggs on the sides since one person is allergic), the Breakfast Pasta, the Chilaquiles, and the Hangar Steak Hash. That also happened to be the order of when they came out and of deliciousness, lol. The Breakfast Pasta has poached egg (on the side), Truffle, bacon, and aged parmesan breadcrumbs on top of the pasta. It is very delicious pasta and all the ingredients work well together without tasting so one-note. It's no wonder that it is one of their most popular dishes. The Chilaquiles is also very popular for a very good reason. If you love a little bit of heat and more complex flavor, then this one is for you. The dish comprises of confit chicken, salsa bomba, cream, cilantro, and sunny side egg (on the side). It is a very interesting savory dish with a lot of flavor and good earthy spiciness. This is not your typical boring chips-and-salsa, that's for sure. Lastly, we got the Hangar Steak Hash, which sadly is less exciting after the first 2 dishes. It is a bit more on the safe side, and the crispy potatoes were a little less crispy, when the salsa Macha, pickled peppers, and hollaindaise kinda blend together without being too distinct. It's a good dish, just not one to have after better dishes. All in all, I am looking forward to trying out more on the menu, though! Okay to be honest I lost count on how many times I've eaten here. First things first Call in to make your reservation don't do it on any applications because sometimes it won't even go through. Sadly this happened to me twice but the staff is so amazing that they still accommodated. I've been here for lunch and dinner and their menus for both are really good. All the servers are very nice and friendly. The food is always worth coming back for and I love the wine. It does get crowded and stuffy but it reminds me of Paris. And I love it! read more
