Course 8 was this mind blowing toasted marshmallows ice cream w/ brûlée banana
    Nate T.

Knowing that this establishment was a partner restaurant to Heritage, I just had to dine here. We had a party of 3 and opted for the menu for two which they accommodated for 3 people. Seriously so worth the $100 per person. Knowing we had 8 course coming, I was wondering if the portions would be big enough and Let me tell you, it was more than enough. The balance of flavors, textures, and the order of the dishes was impeccable. While all the dishes were great, the soft shell crab and the salmon were exceptional! The dessert was a asimile banana and ice cream, but I will say, the marshmallow vanilla and the brûlée banana was out of this world. I could eat it every day. I will definitely be back when they change their seasonal menu.

Was here for a wedding tonight and everything was AMAZING! ALL OF IT! I got the steak- it was cooked perfect! All the food was freshly picked. So delicious, even the greens, the bread, the service and hospitality.... A HUGE delight, even my kids who are very particular, enjoyed their food! Lauren was so friendly, helpful and made sure everything went smoothly. Love Lauren and the ENTIRE staff, they were all friendly, attentive and never missed a beat! I don't know what else to say... Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!!

Brought to you by the brother and sister (chef and owners) of the only Michelin star restaurant in Long Beach, Olive & Rose is a neo-bistro located in the remodeled City Center Motel on the eastern edge of DTLB. This meant that is within walking distance of our home, so my wife and I spent a leisurely walk to dine there for an early Friday dinner. It was a fine dining experience, with excellent service, and a focused menu that encourages a tasting menu experience. I noticed that Olive & Rose was a restaurant on the Citi card dining offer board, offering 5% back on purchases. It's uncommon to find a fine dining local restaurant that I've been wanting to go to with a 'coupon', so booked a reservation on OpenTable for a 5:15 pm seating. The restaurant is also part of the 'Rewards Network' of restaurants, getting rewards depending on which front end rewards program one uses (e.g. Bilt, Marriott, Delta Airlines). Arrived before opening time (5 pm), but were let into the indoor dining area and allowed to wait in the pool area. We were seated early as soon as the restaurant opened, with a tap water bottle with glasses brought. The outdoor seating is in the center pool area, with certain tables dedicated to the restaurant. Heating lamps and sun umbrellas were there in case of need. The area was being used by hotel guests, but unlike most 'hotel' restaurants, the dining patrons were not hotel guests. We were greeted by Lexi, our primary server, and she confirmed that it's a seasonal menu, with it recently being changed for the spring. There is also a "carry-out" menu available in a walk-up window: pretty much exactly the same as the dine-in menu except with the inclusion of a burger frites "off-menu' item for $25. There is a mixologist here, and the cocktail list definitely showed that. My wife chose 'Pretty in Pink' ($18): vodka, coffee, cacao, strawberry. I couldn't taste coffee after the first sip, but my wife encouraged me to take one more...it was after the second, that I tasted it...magical. All beers are bottles (no draft available), so skipped. Bread & Cultured Butter ($10) - 4 thickly sliced sour dough from Hey Brother Baker. really good. Braised Octopus ($29) - 3 tentacle pieces, beautifully presented curled and braised, with baby potatoes and white beans. Rib Eye ($55) - slow cooked ribeye served medium rare, served more like a filet. I love snap peas, and here it was served with lightly tossed greens and shelled garden peas. Service was superb throughout the whole dinner, with every person we interacted with, being welcoming and genuinely looking to answer questions and gather feedback. The outdoor space was large, with tables spaced far enough apart. The vibe was easy and relaxed, matching the pool setting and everyone dressing as they wished, and no-one looking harried...definitely Cali Casual. More easy-to-prepare food (bar or fast) would have been perfectly acceptable in this setting as well. So to confirm, the plating is the size of a typical entree as part of a tasting menu...so running small. Most likely one will leave a bit hungry if they came in famished. But I believe worth it if any of the dishes (or cocktails) appeal to you. So why not drop into the many nearby restaurants serving bigger portions but certainly more common dishes for a later meal?

The food was delicious, however, the portion sizes were laughably small for the price. We started with the Olives, which were served warm and tasted amazing. Next was the Crudité, which had a lovely presentation, however, at approximately $2 per vegetable type on the plate, the necessity of cutting one small radish in half for two people to share seemed ridiculous. Fortunately, there were two asparagus tips, so we both had our own. Amazing food, beautifully presented, however, if you arrive hungry, expect to drop some dough, or you might do as we did and find a different restaurant with more substantial offerings.

Service really depends on the day and the server. Sometimes it's stellar, sometimes just average. That said, the cocktails are always super delicious. Same goes for the food, which is seasoned to perfection. The decor and vibes are so cute! Only real downside (aside from the inconsistency in service) is parking. It is DTLB, so we usually street park a block or two away and walk. Overall, still a solid spot and one I enjoy coming back to.

Right in the middle of downtown, this charming bites and cocktails spot offers a romantic restaurant setting ready for reservations, a counter space to watch the masters at work, or a outdoor pool area that offers a more casual vibe but still with upscale food and drinks. The outdoor area is definitely more inviting on summer evenings because it can get chilly but really makes you feel like your at a boutique hotel in the middle of Palm Springs. We ordered at the counter and they were super helpful with what dishes to order and what drinks might be more to my liking. Definitely excited to go back.

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with an early dinner at Olive & Rose. This place had been on our list for a while, and we're really glad we finally made it in. We did the dinner for two and swapped the chicken for the steak. Everything was fantastic. From the bread to the entrees to the dessert, every course was a hit. The cocktails were also really unique and delicious. I enjoyed the Pear Pressure & the Stalk and Pepper. My wife ordered a Matcha Lemongrass Mocktail. Lily was our server and she was really sweet. We didnt catch the names of the other staff who helped us throughout dinner, but everyone we interacted with made us feel well taken care of. 10/10 dinner. We'll definitely be back.

Olive & Rose - 9/10 Aesthetic & Ambiance: 8.5/10 - Chic 1950's style-hotel with an amazing restaurant built in. There is limited seating so make sure to make a ressy beforehand, and the Ambiance is more chill and quiet with date nights and older crowd. Service: 9/10 - Service was quick and the courses were spaced out perfectly. The server had a great sense of humor too lol. Been here a few times and it's always good. DRINKS Pretty & Basic: 8.5/10 - Delicious drink with a range of fruit flavors with the elderflower, watermelon and lychee it was delicious! Just a warning, the garnish is pickled! FOOD Three Cheeses: 8.5/10 - The cheeses were great, they change from time to time, but the most notable one was a soft bleu cheese, while being a pungent it wasn't overpowering. Bread & Butter: 9/10 - Thick cuts of home made bread and delicious salted butter, also recommended to pair with the Salt Spring Mussels to it in. Salt Spring Mussels: 9/10 - Cleaned, flavorful and delicious. The kombu buerre blanc sauce was the outstanding! Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips: 10/10 - Best in-house chip I've ever had. I'm not a fan of salt & vinegar chips and I couldn't stop myself from trying to get more. Stake Tartare "Katsu" Sando: 8.5/10 - The bread was perfectly crispy and the tartare was delicious with the hits of sun-dried tomato aioli. Korobuta Pork Chop: 8.5/10 - Very tender pork with a slight crips of skin. The apple & fennel topper gave it a nice earthy sweet cut to balance with the brussle sprout bottom. Diver Scallops: 9/10 - Just as you'd want, juicy tender and soft center with a perfect pan-sear top and bottom. The celery root was subtle, and the gooseberry was a different taste but added to the flavor deliciously. Aged Rib Chop: 9.5/10 - A must get here, it was cooked perfectly, seasoned lightly, and tender as can be. Each piece was decadent butter melting with each bite. The fries were okay DESSERT Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream Sundae: 9/10: It literally tasted like they froze a toasted marshmallow and served it in a

Foods really good I really enjoyed everything they brought out. The service was good too they were attentive and nice. It's somewhat cute inside but very tiny and surprisingly very loud. I found myself not able to hear what people at my own table were saying at times. It was also really hot but it is summer time so I can't really blame them too much for that. Overall great experience great food I'd come back!

My review of this amazing spot is a bit overdue, so some of the items aren't available, as they change some things seasonally. That being said though, I had to make sure and still get my review on here. We were able to get a reservation on a weeknight a couple days in advance. I am glad we got one, as it did fill up and stay full. We were warmly welcomed and immediately transported to what felt like Palm Springs. We loved the ambiance. Our server was over to greet us quickly, and she was immediately helpful and patient. We never felt rushed through the whole meal, but always felt like we were checked on. We started with the bread, which I was hesitant about for the $9 price tag, but I will admit, it was delicious and would get it everytime. I can't even decide what my favorite of the other items were though. The steak tartare katsu sandwich was so unexpected, and I wish I could have had another order. The endive salad looks simple, but was so flavorful. The fish dish was cooked to perfection - moist and flaky. We each had a cocktail and a glass of wine. The wine selection is small, but thoughtful, and there are some unique options. The cocktail menu was creative and has a little something for everyone. I wish I could bring this spot to San Diego. We were just visiting Long Beach for a few days, and I was tempted to come back the next day because I wanted to try more menu items. It was that good! You can get top notch service and food at unpretentious prices. Don't hesitate to book your table!

the best fries outside of Belgium

I had the best comprehensive meal of my life at Olive & Rose. I've been to this place three times, but I feel like I've gotten acquainted enough with the menu to know exactly what to order. So, starting off with the cocktail program - it is EXCELLENT. If you're just looking to get drinks and some finger food, you can totally do that without a reservation, but you'll be sitting outside by the pool(which is a vibe in itself). We ordered the pear pressure and culture shock drink - which were extremely refreshing and so refined. The menu changes by season, but even within the season they make micro adjustments, so your experience may vary slightly from mine. We started off with heirloom roasted carrots over a yogurt spread, and it was a great starter. The amberjack crudo is something you cannot skip - I've had it in the past but this new version with the squash puree is divine. The beef tartare is a sleeper. It's so damn good, it doesn't even make sense. I prefer it to be served as a sando (as seen in my photo) but they have served it differently before where it's all on a plate and you scoop it up with chips. The sando just ensures the perfect bite. Next came the mushroom tortellini, and this surprised us a ton. The mushroom broth is some of the deepest and most flavorful vegetable broths we've ever had - and we couldn't stop drinking it. The tortellini itself was amazing, but the broth was such a surprise. Next came the kurobuta pork. It does NOT come with fries, that's only reserved for the aged rib cap with frites - but I asked for it on the side and they delivered. The steak frites is amazing (we've ordered it before) but the kurobuta pork did not disappoint, either. Both are hearty, tender, and so flavorful. I'm a huge fry lover and I gotta say, these are the best fries I've had outside of Belgium, the birthplace of the french fry. It has a refined crisp and an airy texture that most fries in America don't have. It's hard to explain, but this is how fries are supposed to be - alongside the aioli. To finish the meal, we had the fuyu persimmon tartine and it was a delight. It had a light crisp from the caramelization and it wasn't too sweet. Service was excellent, as usual - our server tended to every request or question we had. Our glasses were always full. On top of that, they actually remembered us from our last visit. There's validated parking, but we Ubered over so we can walk a few blocks down to Midnight Oil to end the night. Overall, I cannot recommend this place enough. It's such a cozy gem and each dish is on point. Bravo!

Hope Ranch Mussels & Dashi Buerre Blanc - sooo good and only $13!

This review is for the pool party they host during the summer. In collaboration with Footwork Records, they created a fun vibe with house music, sun and splashes. $25 entry is quite steep though considering they don't even supply towels and the pool isn't that big. Their cocktails are disappointingly pre-mixed, which is a bit of a shocking move for Chef Philip Pretty and Lauren Michaelis. I tried the Pretty & Basic ($17), which was supposed to have vodka, watermelon and lychee. No hint of vodka and there were no fresh juices. It was mixed in clarified coconut milk and was extremely sweet. I switched to sparkling wine ($22) and after tax and tip, I paid $27 for the small glass. At least I got a buzz from it, as opposed to the pre-mixed cocktail. Kanpachi Tostada ($22)- it was fresh and carefully crafted with smashed avocado, parsley, dill, chili and salt, but it was quite small for the price. The bartender moved slowly, but the servers tending to folks at the pool hustled. Wish the event went passed 4pm too.

What a charming, quaint hotel restaurant! Olive and Rose has such a unique style and vibe--it really feels like stepping back into the 1960s. We started with the martini for two, though the portion was closer to splitting a single martini. That said, the flavor was excellent, and I loved the thoughtful selection of garnishes that came with it. The fresh bread and butter were a great start--you can tell it was baked in-house. For entrées, the local halibut with Carolina Gold risotto and snap peas was a standout. The fish was incredibly fresh, perfectly grilled, and paired beautifully with the creamy risotto. We also tried the aged rib chop with frites and au poivre, which was excellent. The cut had just the right amount of fat, the flavor was rich, and the fries were spot-on--crispy and perfectly seasoned. To finish, we had the key lime pie with meringue. I'm usually not a fan of meringue, but this pie completely won me over--it was outstanding. I'm not usually drawn to French cuisine, but Olive and Rose might be the exception. If French-inspired dining is your thing, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try.

We brought our own wine which paired well with many of our dishes. Fruits de Mer, Mirugai Clam Salad & Kanpachi, Preserved Kumquat

Ask the Community - Olive & Rose

    Is dinner inside only?

If you have a reservation you will be seated inside. Walk ups (assuming no space inside) can dine outside. The outside menu is a little more casual than the inside. Make a reservation if you want to eat inside

Is the restaurant open at 12p on Wednesday like this page states? I have tried calling 5 times over 3 hours to amend a reservation and there has been no answer. The Civic Center does not offer a direct phone number either so what's the best contact?

    Are they serving alcohol yet?

No unfortunately not, but they have amazing NA cocktails and should have their liquor license soon.

    How is parking?

Expect to walk a few blocks. Street parking only in a predominately residential area. It took me 10 mins to find parking and walked three blocks.

Definitely worth it! The vibes are unmatched. It's a unique blend of "top notch cocktail crafting" and "beer and a hot pretzel after work." You can dress up, you can dress down, it's very 'just be yourself' which I love. I've literally had caviar AND hot dogs there in the same night at an event. They know how to blend high/low. Incredible knowledge and ingredients but not snooty patootie. Super inclusive and fun, with cool popups and events happening all the time. It's a full bar so you can get any cocktail you would normally order if you're keeping it simple, or beer, wine, boilermakers, etc. There's a span of offerings and price points, so something for everyone. It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

We got way more drinks than we usually do that night because each one was better than the last. Only thing tho I really wish they kept their old menu. The drawings were beautiful and it had so much character while very easily communicating how each drink will look and taste. It went so well with the overall vibe of the place. I was able to make a late dinner reservation for Saturday night about a week prior - reservations are definitely encouraged, as the bar was full the entire time we were there. Gaining access to the speakeasy was actually not that difficult, just ring the doorbell of the ornate floral door, beneath the lone lantern in the alley behind El Barrio Cantina. Parking though was a nightmare. I only realized when paying the bill that the two establishments are one and the same, and I could have very likely parked in the designated spots for El Barrio customers. The whole bar is a mood - lighting is dim and you don't get to see much beyond your table, which is good for those seeking privacy. One thing to note is that because the dining space is so small and intimate, it does get quite loud. The appetizers we tried were all good, with izakaya flare as promised. The charred edamame was extremely addicting, smothered in garlic soy and just the right amount of spicy from chili arbor. The Okonomi corn dog was a clever spin on okonomiyaki, bonito flakes and all. Finally, both the Yuzu and Wagyu rolls were fresh and perfect size bites of their respective fishes. I wish I could have sampled their entire cocktail menu! All the drinks sounded novel and unique, and featured their specially cut crystal clear ice. My Yuzu Strawberry blended the smokiness of the mezcal with the tangy sweetness from yuzu and strawberry perfectly. And the Peated Highball I ordered as my nightcap has to be my new favorite drink, adding a boldness to the Japanese cocktail staple. Only reason I took a star off my review was the abrupt service. Our waitress was not subtle about needing our table for the next reservation, asking to clear our plates when there was still food on it, and closing our check early to the point that the bartender had to come and charge us again for our last drink. Despite that, still strongly suggest checking out Tokyo Noir. Long Beach sadly doesn't have many speakeasies, but the ones that are here are at the top of their game.

My cousins and I got there around 9 p.m. on a Friday. It was steady, but when we went up for our first drinks the bar itself wasn't very busy--there were maybe two people in front of us and two behind us. I mention this because it matters for context. My cousin ordered two drinks, one for him and one for his girlfriend. We were talking and at some point I looked at his girlfriend's drink, which was already about halfway empty, and noticed a fairly large crack running across one side of the glass, right above where the remainder of her drink was. I said, "Hey, your glass has a significant crack in it," and she laughed it off and said she noticed and was just drinking from the other side. I told her she absolutely should not do that because there was already a chip near the rim and there could potentially be tiny pieces of glass in the drink. I also told her we needed to bring it to the bartender's attention because that's a legitimate safety issue. Someone who isn't paying attention could cut their lip or potentially ingest glass. By the time we went back up to the bar, it had gotten quite a bit busier. We explained what happened to the bartender and he asked if we got the drink there. We said yes and pointed out the female bartender who had originally served us. He asked what the drink was, walked away, served a few other people, and eventually brought us a replacement. We were completely patient. We understood that the bar was busier at this point, we weren't rude, and we weren't upset about having to wait. What bothered me was when he handed us the replacement and said, "Next time you need to let us know when it happens." That response really rubbed me the wrong way. It's not the customer's responsibility to inspect a glass before drinking from it, and obviously we would have said something sooner if we had noticed it sooner. Considering the bar wasn't particularly busy when the drink was originally made, I was also surprised that a crack that significant wasn't noticed before the glass was served. I did take a photo of the bartender afterward because I wanted to make sure I could identify the person involved when I brought the interaction to management's attention. I spoke with the person who identified himself as the manager and explained what happened. He said he would speak with the bartender, but the response also felt somewhat dismissive given that my concern was ultimately about customer safety and how the situation was handled. Accidents happen and glasses crack. Had the drink simply been replaced and the concern acknowledged appropriately, I honestly probably wouldn't be writing this review. It was the combination of being served a visibly cracked glass, being told that we should have notified them sooner, and then feeling like the concern wasn't taken particularly seriously when I brought it to management that ultimately prompted me to leave an honest review. Beautiful property and amazing view, but the way this situation was handled definitely left a bad impression.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

As for the food, it was pretty mid and took a long time to come out. The popcorn chicken especially disappointed me since it didn't taste like Taiwanese popcorn chicken at all. It was more like chicken nuggets?? Overall, I wouldn't recommend coming here for the food. The bathroom was also a bit dirty. Drinks: * Hua Sheng (3/5): Nutty aftertaste, but the alcohol flavor was pretty strong. * Salty Plums (4/5): My favorite out of everything we ordered, super refreshing. * Jasmine Milk Tea Coma (3/5): My second favorite, but I wish the strawberry flavor came through more.

It's…read moredifficult to find a restaurant with amazing ambiance, service, food AND cocktails, but Viaje cracked the code. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and received AMAZING service from the bartenders Bailey and Randy. Both gentlemen were extremely knowledgeable about tequila and took the time to understand our preferences, pick a cocktail off the menu for us and then explain each cocktail in great detail. Give these guys a visit and I promise you'll be in a good hands! Cocktails/food we tried and I highly recommend: "Hasta el cielo" - The cantalope in this drink is so insanely refreshing, especially right now in this summer heat! "Paloma Blanca" - You'll be disappointed with every single Paloma after experiencing the Paloma Blanca. They mastered their in house clarified grapefruit soda. "Moda Chicali" - My spirit of choice is gin and it's hard to find a cocktail that isn't cucumber and mint. Viaje nailed it with this one!! It's a perfect balance of light and sweet. It almost has a lychee taste to it, even though that's not an ingredient! "Pelon Divino" - If you enjoyed eating pulparindo as a kid, then you'll love this cocktail. I'm not usually a fan of mezcal, but the smokiness is so smooth and almost needed to balance out the tamarindo. Probably the first time I've truly enjoyed a mezcal in my cocktail! "Taco de Pork Belly" - INSANELY GOOD. Pork belly was so crispy and juicy. The pico de gallo was perfect. And the handmade in house blue corn tortillas were DELICIOUS. "Taco de Camaron" - Also delicious. Shrimp was juicy and seasoned well. "Carnitas" - This was recommended to us by the staff and it did not disappoint. The meat fell off the bone and was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The black beans were also soooo flavorful and the perfect texture. This dish was enough food for two people to share if you started your evening with appetizers. Viaje is the perfect place for a solo meal, date night or meeting up with some friends for dinner. I will 100% be back and will be telling everyone I know about this restaurant. Keep it up Viaje!

The staff was attentive, friendly, and on top of everything, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. We knew it wasn't a traditional Mexican restaurant, which was perfectly fine, but unfortunately the food just didn't deliver. The ceviche was served in what tasted like a cold tomato soup, garnished with microgreens, cilantro, and other greens. Great presentations but the flavors just didn't work for us. The carnitas were the biggest disappointment. They were served more like barbecue ribs and were very tough. They definitely weren't the tender, flavorful carnitas we were expecting to enjoy with tortillas. The chips were good, and management stopped by to check on us, which was appreciated. I really wish the food had matched the level of service and atmosphere. We didn't want to chance it with dessert so we skipped dessert and after dinner drinks.

Honestly thought it was the bar that we came inside. First impression, why did we need reservations.... Since we didn't know the hidden entrance. Well, it's a cool concept once we entered. There's a dress code so be advised. What I found out was the entrance of the speakeasy was through a phone booth that next to the pool table of Roxanne's bar. Once reservations is made, you'll received an email with a password to enter. Enter phone booth and to connect to the inside and they'll open the door for you. We had the first reservations I believe they opened at 7pm. We were the first group to arrive. As it was my first time, we had ordered bar food and were waiting for it inside the main bar. So half an hour was used from our time limit. The speakeasy, dark and moody but perfect for the place. Special crafted cocktails by the bartenders which were great. They also have food as well, found out later. We did try the meat pie, which it was just ok. Basically an empanadas, the pickle veggies accompanied it was my favorite. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. There's a piano which maybe used for live music. Overall, the moody speakeasy vibe was great. Friendly staff and bartender made some great drinks. What we had to snack on, the meat pie was just ok. They're very strict with the time limits. Once it's reached they'll let you know.

So this is a review that's been a *long* time coming (I've just been chronically overwhelmed for an…read moreequally long time.) I haven't been here often, but I *was* here right around when they opened, wherein I determined that the food ranged from quality but a bit overpriced, to just overpriced, a feeling I would still hold, generally speaking. Great vibe, solid service, but maybe a little pretentiously priced (and/or it's just stupid expensive to run a restaurant in this area, granted.) And with *super* pretentiously-priced cocktails, for how relatively simple they mostly are (if I'm gonna spend $18+ plus tip on a drink, I expect Baby Gee-level cocktails.) They also had an impressive wall of craft beer on tap, but also a bit pricey, especially compared to places not on 2nd street, so there was never a particular *draw*. But then I never actually finished reviewing it, because I'm super behind. Anyway, then also not particularly recently, they launched a happy hour, which at the time, especially for this particular part of Long Beach, was pretty stupidly good, with $5 decent sized smashburgers (6 with cheese, 10 with cheese and also fries), as well as $5 craft beer, pretty much all of them, including the fancy, exciting stuff (exciting if you're a nerd like me, the barrel aged stuff, for instance). They also had one specific half hour at the time, which I'd like to immortalize as a super fun idea, where one specific cheap but craft beer was some stupid price, I think like a dollar, but since they had a whole wall of rotating craft beer, a *different* specific cheap craft beer any given day. That's not relevant at all to my current review, but it was fun. Anyway, I still didn't write a review like a year ago when I took advantage of that happy hour, though I did take advantage of it a solid couple of times. Skip forward again to just a few weeks ago, I happened to be attending an event in the general area again, an event that was going to involve more alcohol than food and for which having a happy-hour-timed dinner in the area was going to be useful, so I figured I'd check out whether the happy hour was still there, and it was. At least as of a few weeks ago, the happy hour (3-6 weekdays) was still a thing, and it had gone up a whopping 55 cents per item. Ends up being effectively ~$17 plus tip for a quality smashburger, quality fries and a craft beer, though they didn't have as *many* of the fancy (barrel-aged or equivalent) stuff as they had the first time, they did still have some, and it was still $5.55 for any beer on draft they had. So happy hour wise, that's a pretty good price for this part of the country, I'd say. Obviously only since the burgers and fries *are* also absolutely quality burgers and fries. Not quite as wonderful as my gold standard smashburger at The Stache, perhaps, but still a great smashburger. My opinion on spending almost 20 bucks for what is effectively still just an old fashioned, hasn't changed, though. :p
