I've walked past this place a million times but never gave it much thought. I went in for a juice but the line was long, the produce (in the juice bar) looked slightly sad, and I wasn't impressed with whoever was working at the juice bar. All that said, I went in tonight (with a coupon!) and had a great experience. They offer a huge variety of vegan and organic items and while the prices are comparable to other health food stores (like Lifethyme and Earthmatters) - slightly pricey! - they had some really good deals that I was able to stock up on. I was particularly excited that they carry the large container of the (new?) almond milk yogurt - AND it was really cheap. I've only seen the small containers at a couple stores around the city but I hate wasting all the small cups so I prefer to buy the large tubs. Thanks! I was also impressed with the deli. The vegan offerings (egg roll, potato knish, soy chicken nuggets) were much more interesting than I expected. I was also really glad to see they offered Vegan Diva sweet treats to mix things up a bit. I was juice fasting when I stopped in today but I will certainly be back for soy nuggets and a donut! read more

On the positivity route - this place had a great selection everything that I was looking for and always does have everything I need - it is a great place for the neighborhood. It is sometimes a little too pricey for me and my budget but maybe that is just me and not everyone else. It does however factor in my reviewing process. On the negativity notes - the staff sometimes they are like fantastic and super helpful - other times you feel like they are following you around like you are wanted by the FBI or something.  It is like honestly chill out if I do need your assistance trust me I know exactly where to find you, and I will.   Also big negative you have to look at the expiration dates always like always because they will sell you expired stuff, and then the manager not the nicest guy when you try to return it. Elm Health has the best selection of products, hands down, no question. They have stuff here that I've never seen in stores, ever. Like food grade hydrogen peroxide. That's strictly Amazon territory. They even have Metagenics products which you can usually only buy through a healthcare provider. Their prices are super duper reasonable as well. They have a good selection of meat (organic, grassfed) in addition to the copious vegetables and frozen goods. Excellent beverage section as well. Honestly, I love this place. I haven't tried the juice bar or the pharmacy, but I bet it'll rock your taint square off. A+++ recommended. read more

Shopped there frequently But noticed that if you venture to to back of the store and you are not a Caucasian you may be followed under the presence that they want to assist. Food on shelves and drinks may be expired and they give you a hard time when confronted about it. Need to make some serious changes. read more

This is my go to place for delicious gluten-free bagels. It's hard to find yummy gluten-free bagels and Elm health has lots of gluten-free bagels and other healthy organic and delicious options. They are a little bit pricey but organic and gluten-free things always are. I love the Greater Knead sweet note gluten free bagels -definitely try those! read more

Impossible not to walk out of here without almost buying more stuff than you can fit in your fridge/freezer, but in a good way. They have items I don't see at Whole Foods or other health food stores, other than Lifethyme (its only true rival, in my opinion). The worst pharmacy in the city. Considering the Pharmacist takes it upon herself to deny a prescription fill to a customer, the point of the pharmacy is, therefore, void and pointless. The Pharmacist is not utilizing her code of ethics to do her job as I will also go so far as to believe she judges your patients on the basis of race and economic status (to her, the way people look and dresses dictates the amount of income they have). And at the end of the day, she needs to her code. Further, she should not interfere with the instruction of the physician prescribing said medication and instead adhere to her basic job: fill prescriptions. Period. If you do not wish for your Pharmacist to be your Physician also, do NOT go to this Pharmacy. The grocery section of this location is fantastic! Just take your prescriptions to a Duane Reade or CVS. Since it's opening, I have been shopping here almost every day. The selection of dried goods is good, but much of the fresh produce is somewhat sad looking. Additionally, It is definitely overpriced and trader joe's sells many similar products for 1/2 the price. Initially the prices were more reasonable, but as more customers were lured in they quickly raised them. One majorly negative criticism I have for the store is their management. They do not favor the customer in every case. I recently brought back rancid nut butter and was told it was too bad because I didn't have a receipt. I was also told by previous employees that they were not treated well by management. Despite the convenience to my apt, I won't be shopping at elms health anymore. read more

I really love this store. I've recently discovered this neighborhood gem. After passing it up for so long; I thought it was a pharmacy & drug store initially! Boy was I wrong! One day I passed by and noticed that they had a juice bar. I went in and I couldn't believe it. This store has everything I need and then some. What a great selection of specialty health food items. They have a great produce section, awesome frozen section and nice selection of organic meats and gluten free items. And OMG I can't believe the beauty & wellness section! It's clean, the aisles are spacious and the staff helpful. Most of all I have to say that the items are not as expensive as others have mentioned. For example, I bought coconut creamer here and it was almost a dollar cheaper that Lifethyme. Also bought rose water here and it too was a dollar cheaper than Ricky's NYC. Glutino toaster pastries on sale here for $4.99, I paid $6.00 at Gristides. Trust me people, the prices here are great, I know because I shop around for the special items that I need. This is my wife's favorite store in the city. It has all her health food favorites but at better prices than some of the other vegan / organic / health focused shops. From my perspective, I might prefer a more traditional supermarket like Citarella but Elm Health has wide aisles and a really friendly staff. read more

I have all good things to say about this Elm Health. The staff and the selection of products are great. This review is mainly for Renee, she is one of the staff there. Her knowledge of products are second to none. I am Doctor of Chiropractic & a big fan of Dr. Mercola's teachings. As a family we try to stay as healthy as we can. Renee's advise is invaluable. She is an expert when it comes to how the products work.... from something as simple as picking out a toothpaste to knowledge of how the body works . Really glad this grocery came to town not so long ago. Sure, there's Westside just a couple blocks away, but Elm carries a lot of specialty/health food items that other grocery stores don't have, particularly vegan and gluten-free items of all kinds. Due to the copious amount of alcohol I consume on a daily basis, I TRY to eat organically as often as possible. I was really quite surprised at how much food they have - almost enough that I didn't have to go to my normal grocery store. I was not even aware that Elm Drugs/Elm Health had opened as I don't frequent this neck of the woods that often. Not so long ago the groupon deal was $30 off a purchase so I got it. I needed vitamins and some other stuff so here we are. whole foods and trader joes are crazy and sometimes they don't have what you are looking for. I was asked no less than three times if I wanted help and I just wandered around and looked to see what was available. Got some dishwashing stuff, rinse agent, candles, tongue scraper and some other stuff because of course when you have a coupon you tend to spend more it is scientifically proven. read more

I frequent this store on my walk home as they have a great selection of vitamins, spices, food... you name it, and all at reasonable prices. However, at around 7:30 pm Thursday evening, I was browsing the clearance aisle in the back of the store (they do have some great deals on occasion) when I opened a box to see the size of some shorts and promptly was asked to not open the boxes. Ok, fine - no problem. I put the boxes back and kept browsing. It was at this point when I realized that same worker had posted up in the back office, sat reclined in an office chair and just watched me the whole time I was browsing. I asked him if he needed anything and he rudely said something like "Don't worry about me, I'm just doing my job." Being profiled like that, I lost my appetite for spending my money in the store, I commended him on handling his job so well and I walked towards the front. On my way out, I mentioned the horrible treatment to the cashier who told me the guy was a douche and not to take it personally. I was then stopped by security who asked me if I had bought anything (no, I had not), asked me why I hadn't bought anything (because as a person of color, I know when I'm being profiled), and then asked me if he could search my bag (no, you cannot search my bag; I didn't buy anything because my shopping was rudely interrupted by one of your employees). It is so much easier to buy all your stuff online or with a bigger box store, but I choose to spend my money at local neighborhood businesses who deserve it. After my treatment here, this is not one of those businesses. Spend your money elsewhere. The decent selection at reasonable prices aren't enough to compensate being treated like a criminal. read more

This new store is brand-new looking, large, bright and shiny. They've got a ton of stuff. Unfortunately, the prices are out-of-control, especially for this neighborhood. They're aiming for a customer base that is just rolling in dough... or, rather, who WOULD be rolling in heaps of money if said money was printed with organic inks on soy paper. I had a Groupon, and it was really tough to find anything that I thought was a good deal, even at half price. Eventually I just decided to buy some specialty items. So, I got: a small bottle of maple syrup: $15. a small canister of hot chocolate mix: $10. two frozen pie crusts: $5. and then I saw some apple juice on sale, $2.50. I was really suspicious that they were gonna try something scam-a-licious at the register, because all the price tags in the store had that same weird double pricing that I complained about at another 'Healthy' store recently. But I didn't run into any problems. Maybe because I presented the Groupon AFTER I was given a total, since I see in the review from "A.K." that they DID try something of the sort. Still, I'd give them an A-OK 3 stars... EXCEPT that I was while browsing I saw that they sell a LOT of "homeopathic" products in their "pharmacy." To quote from wikipedia: "homeopathic remedies may not contain any pharmacologically active molecules, and for such remedies to have pharmacological effect would violate fundamental principles of science. Modern homeopaths have proposed that water has a memory that allows homeopathic preparations to work without any of the original substance; however, there are no verified observations nor scientifically plausible physical mechanisms for such a phenomenon. The lack of convincing scientific evidence to support homeopathy's efficacy and its use of remedies lacking active ingredients have caused homeopathy to be described as pseudoscience, quackery, and a "cruel deception" Not only is homeopathy a "cruel deception," it is a flat-out scam, and actively medically dangerous. People are being sold "remedies" that are nothing but bottles of water. To profit from the gullibility of people who are ill and suffering is pretty much what I would call evil. Of course, sometimes the profiteers are simply gullible themselves... but still... they're getting docked a star for having this crap on the shelves. read more

I have been shopping at this location for about a year now. I enjoy their selection of vegan items. But I have to say, I've purchased things from here that were stale and everything is WAY overpriced! They literally charge $7.50 for an item that I can get at whole foods two blocks away for $4.39? Come on. . I guess the ridiculous prices are to make up for the lack of customers. I have been here on different days of the week and at random times and I'm almost always the only person shopping in the store. Also, they do not honor manufacturer coupons. Yesterday I picked up about $60 worth of groceries and I went to check out. The cashier was friendly, she rang me up and I gave her my $1 off coupon for a frozen vegan entrée. She scanned it and I kid you not - the manager ran over and stopped her and yelled at her in front of everybody. They went back and forth for about 5 minutes until she eventually just backed down. He made huge scene and I could tell she was humiliated; she just kept apologizing to me. How embarrassing and unprofessional! This store would rather lose a customer's business over a $1 coupon?? Nice! Needless to say, I will never be returning to this store. I will just go to whole foods or fairway where they have the same items for way less money and way less attitude. For over 4 years I've had all of medications filled, processed if there was any insurance problem, and delivered to my home , effortlessly. On freezing cold winter days the soup is a joy, home made and healthy, all ways hits the spot. I really enjoy the vast variety of frozen and fresh groceries. Elm Health is certainly a new store, but unless you eat meat and need some Tylenol it's really not a necessary place for the West Village, I mean, Integral Yoga is right around the corner on W13th (towards 8th Ave) and their staff is more knowledgeable than the staff at Elm Health (which is funny, because I've seen some familiar faces at Elm that I swear used to work at Integral Yoga. Castaways?). Also, Elm Health has horrible produce and a very limited selection and while I do get some products at Elm that Integral Yoga doesn't carry (Meyer Lemon laundry detergent) I would never waste my time with Elm's produce (Integral Yoga is 1,000x better than the produce at Elm Health, no joke). If you need some frozen chicken nuggets (sometimes I do!) and want to pick up some natural food while at the pharmacy this place is ok, otherwise it's really pointless. How do I love Elm Health? Let me count the ways: 1.) Overwhelming amount of variety. - From canned items to frozen foods to medicinal herbs, this place has everything. I even found my favorite hard-to-find Suki Organic Toner. 2.) Fantastic customer service. - How often does the owner of the store come out of his office, simply to explain a product to his customer? At Elm, it's standard. - A round of applause goes to the knowledgeable nutritional consultant who spent a good 15 minutes reviewing my strict gluten-free diet and making recommendations on the best products for me. 3.) Greatest one-stop shop in town for everything healthy. - So let's see...I got a detox smoothie from the juice bar, local organic produce in the refrigerator section, my allergy prescription filled, a tasty raw brownie, and biodegradable garbage bags. My afternoon errands are complete! 4.) Tremendous attention to detail. - Each item is so perfectly placed to make your shopping experience fast, efficient, and fun. 5.) A party for the senses. - Kudos to the store owner who designed this place. It looks like a food art gallery! The entire place is bursting with life from the colors on the walls to the smells from the juice bar. The decor is so lifelike. Who thought Japanese eggplant could be so sexy? 6.) A warm, kind heart. - Elm donates to City Harvest to help feed the hungry in NY. At the end of the day, I like to know that my money is going to a good cause. This morning I purchased a bento box from their prepared food section. It was my mistake to not check the expiration date and when I opened the box, it quickly became clear that the food was expired. I then realized the food was a week past its expiration date. I went back to the store to alert them that they had expired food for sale and instead of being apologetic, the manager rudely told me it was my fault. He said I took the food from "the wrong part of the refrigerator." How was I supposed to understand the stores internal method of how the stock their refrigerator? Why would I think that expired food would be stocked and easily available for sale? I understand that I should have been aware of the expiration date but, having the manager blame me for purchasing the food when they stocked the food in their store is unacceptable. I would recommend avoiding shopping here unless you want to be at risk for eating expired food and then being blamed for it. Never going here again. read more

I can not believe the way I was spoken to on the phone today by one of the men in the pharmacy. I have a total of three prescriptions due for pick up tomorrow. One of the prescriptions is a controlled drug, and they made a big deal about me picking it up one day early! I live three miles away from the pharmacy and I have a very busy life like most New Yorkers. I don't have time to go to the pharmacy everyday. Besides, most people like to have their medication refills early. I am so not a last minute person when it comes to anything. The man in the pharmacy told me he was going to call my doctor if I try to pick up the drug early. My doctor already knew I was going to pick the medication up early.. which is why she gave me the prescription early. I called my doctor and explained to them the nasty attitude I received from the guy in the pharmacy. They called my prescriptions in to CVS and I will never use Elm again. Their workers have bad attitudes and don't know how to handle simple situations. Overall, this is a low class drug store in a high class area. Stay away. read more
