I have been wanting to try the Prime Rib at Elmer's as I have heard it is good. I have had some bad experiences in the past at other restaurants but finally decided to give it a try. The Prime Rib was fantastic. Perfect medium rare. The rock salt seasoning was evident and the marbling of the meat was excellent. The horseradish sauce was also quite good. The Ivar's Clam Chowder was very good...slightly too thick though. The two onion rings that were on the dish with the meal were also very tasty. The vegetables were fair. Not much flavor, and the french fries were also okay as well...nothing special. It is important to note that if one visits Elmer's for dinner, the dining room is quiet. It is a restaurant known for breakfast, and they are excellent. There were only 4 tables in the room and it felt slow. One could hear all of the conversations of the staff. I just felt the intensity and urgency of the staff was not the same as I have seen for breakfast. But I will come back for the Prime Rib. read more

There were two diner chains in this town without diners: One tried to power through the pandemic on clumsily made burgers and pie that it sent out lukewarm with whatever third-party delivery app would take it. The other closed completely until it could reopen at full capacity. One kept its menu stuck stubbornly in the late '80s and early '90s and hoped that its pasty, aging clientele would float it through. The other kept revamping its menu around certain favorites while adding items featuring locally sourced ingredients tied to the place that produced them. One just shut down every location it had and received resigned-to-indifferent eulogies in local publications from the now-grown high school students who frequented it for lack of better options. The other still has the fireplaces going as it shreds fresh potatoes, scrambles fresh eggs and offers a fresh take on skillets and mimosas to customers who can handle it's newfound embrace of both its lounge's sparkling wine availability and its spice cabinet and pepper patch. Yes, you can actually taste jalapeño and habanero in a place once resigned to dumping biscuits on gravy. The German pancake's still here and you can still get your Looking For Sun omelette, but Elmer's willingness to adapt to the world around it and change for the better this the main reason why this output stays both open and busy while the chains on the orphan highway around it die painful deaths. The Hillsboro Elmer's sets a standard that independent colleagues like the Sunset Grill and Hale's have wisely followed, and that anyone looking to make breakfast in this town should consider a template. read more

Every single time you come here you'll be greeted with a smile, a warm welcome and either a wait time or you're seated. I grew up coming here as a treat with my family, and still randomly take my mom for the nostalgia. The food is standard, nothing special but I've never had any complaints either. Cost has stayed low and it doesn't feel like most breakfast spots where they'll gouge you with a 60+ dollar bill for two breakfasts and juice. I think we ended up spending 38 or so before tip. I'd say the only reason I'm giving it a four star instead of five is cleanliness (in some aspects) and the decor. Our table was super sticky, but we could tell it was wiped down so it's whatever cleaning product they use. The cholula they brought us had food splattered on it; which was a little yuck. And also... it just hasn't changed! The decor feels old, it's worn out, it's a bit odd. But if you're looking for something solid, cost effective and a friendly atmosphere I recommend coming here! read more

I take my 89 year old mother out for lunch once a week and she likes to have her glass of red wine. We ordered it and they asked her for her ID. She doesn't have an ID as she is 89 years old!!!! They refused to serve her. We have been going out for years and never once has she been asked for ID. Very disappointed that she couldn't enjoy a glass of wine with her meal. read more

ENVIRONMENT-When we entered we realized that this is the Elmer's time forgot... it looks right out of the 80's, right down to the founders picture in the foyer. it started with a wide open restaurant, with 4 tables filled, yet we were placed in a booth that was backing another couple, next to the kitchen and right by the bathroom entrance. PRICE-Then the sticker shock set in when we saw the menu prices. 15-17 dollars for basic breakfast faire. 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns and biscuit, 15.99. my basic cheese and ham omelet, 15.99. My wife had a single strawberry waffle, and a coffee, nothing else, 15.99.... wow. FOOD- When I started into my omelet, it tasted odd, and I was getting a reaction to the ham, like an allergy. so I moved to the hash browns. they stated out crunchy, then became soggy and wet, like they were not cooked all the way. So I went after the biscuit, which was dried out and brittle... SERVICE- it started out great, my wife had a coffee refill quickly, our order was taken, and the food arrived quickly. Then we were abandon... left to fin for ourselves. No water refill, no coffee refill, and no check.... our guy showed up briefly and grabbed our plates and spun around quickly and left as I was asking for a water refill. He NEVER came back with the check. We finally had enough and went to the counter, the hostess gave a big sigh when we had no check, then tracked down or seat and asked what we had. Our breakfast combos were very tasty. French toast was a tad soggy on the corner but overall it was very good. (I guess I could have ask for the French I toast to be more on the well side) The Dutch babie did not disappoint. Two thumbs up on the service. Have visited this location several times since the nearest Elmer's for me closes at 2:30 every day. Although this location was not busy when I walked in, I was greeted by a woman who wouldn't stop yack-yacking with a male customer. A man in the kitchen had to tell her several times that a customer (me) came in. She continued to yack-yack for several more minutes before the customer finally walked out. She also spent several minutes yack-yacking to a couple before finally seating me. I was seated for 15 minutes without any service at all. During that time, the server, Manual, was not very busy and did not look in my direction at all. I went up to the same woman at the front desk and told her that I had been here for 15 minutes without service at all. The woman was surprised and told me that she would get service for me in a few minutes. Manual finally came by after another 5 minutes of waiting. I proceeded to order my food. My best friend and I LOVED Elmers! Walking in we were met with two lovely fireplaces so it was a great start! It got better from there. This is our first time at this location and it did not disappoint. I have to give a special shout out to Leah. She definitely was the star. She gave us great customer service and was a super sweetheart. We look forward to coming to this location more often and we hope to get Leah. Elmers is a must stop for breakfast every time I make my way to Hillsboro, Oregon. They have hearty comfort-food breakfasts that will fill you up and make you feel right at home. A must try is definitely their famous Classic German Pancake served with Lemon wedges, whipped butter and powdered sugar. It's such a treat and will definitely put a simile on your face and make your stomach happy. The staff is friendly and has that small town hospitality. I've been sick for what seems like forever. Today I ventured out to see my mom in Forest Grove. It had drizzled creamy frosting and was gooey with cinnamon sugar. His bacon was uneven as though it were reheated in the microwave. Some was tough, some was chewy, it all was greasy. Our server Grace, was on top of our beverages etc. the whole time.She was friendly and efficient.She reminded me of a school teacher because she worked the tables like she was in a classroom checking in with two or three tables at a time. I had a business appointment in half an hour, so I cancelled order and paid for 2 cups of coffee. The bill was almost $8.00. Service was really bad.
