We go here for the german pancakes that my grandpa loves. But I'm disappointed with my breakfast every time. The food isn't prepared right either undercooked or over cooked. The Ham was covered in oil like it was DRENCHED in oil. and it rocked my guts the last time I ate here like no other. Almost went to the ER it hurt so bad. Today is Mothers day, one of the busiest times for restaurants. So we decided that we would go for breakfast. It was only my husband and I. The wait wasn't too long to get seated or our food. The food was fantastic and the service beyond what you'd expect when it's busy. I had chicken fried steak, which was amazing you could cut it with a fork. Tastey omelets. They have thin layers of egg. Nice texture. The Dutch Babies we got were thin as crepes. Amazing and best ever. The servers were right there to refill water and take care of our requests. The plate shelves were empty. I miss the pretty plates but they have great pictures of the area. Elmer's is a staple in Portland, I can say they are consistent in their food. I haven't been to this location for years and it was like stepping into a time warp. They really need to do an overhaul on the interior as they still have the same decor since the early 80's. It is clean just really old compared to other locations they have. The food was what I expected, it was tasteful and delicious. I had Mr Elmer's omelet with hash Browns which I really enjoyed. Our server did a great job, started out slow when we trickled in but overall she did a great job in getting order, and food to the table. Where they fell flat was the kitchen, they mixed up the orders we had, wrong sides with main dishes, we just figured it out and swapped food at the table. Our server offered immediately to fix it but we found we could resolve it. The decor really needs an update. This place is good for you average family morning breakfast if you don't want to make a far drive to places like Petite Provence. Typical family style breakfast. The room was decorated with fake flowers, except the bathroom had fresh flowers (yah ...weird). The menu was plentiful but nothing worth remember. They tried making is unique with cinnamon french toast and baked pears, but these were overly sweat. They serve a bit more than just typical pancake, omelets, toasts, and eggs. I'll give Kudos for serving food with local organic. I especially enjoyed the healthy vegetable omelet since it was filled with local organic vegetables. So hooray for supporting our local farmers. The service was very quick and friendly. I arrived early to make sure I could get a table so my grand parents didn't have to wait. Shortly after arriving they gave me coffee while I waitined. We have been to this location for breakfast. The breakfast is decent. We've been to other locations for dinner. Tonight we went to dinner at this location for the first time. First I ordered the cod and it was soggy and wet like it had been frozen and the breading wasn't cooked. It was mushy. I let the waitress know that I couldn't eat this. The 3 of us ordered fish and chips (like we have at other locations). It was disgusting. There was very little fish and a whole bunch of thick batter. I told the manager on duty and she said she'd noticed that it was over battered and had told the cook to not put so much batter next time. Seriously...why wasn't it made over again, correctly if you noticed it. We were not offered anything to fix the problem and we paid for 3 gross fish dinners. The dinner salad was made with bottled ranch. I don't like bottled ranch but some people don't mind it. The place wasn't busy and it was a Friday night. Should have been our sign to keep driving! Amazing place for a good meal! We came here for breakfast time and time again while staying in Forest Grove. I had the lobster benedict and it was absolutely delicious. My kids loved the pancakes! The coffee was wonderful and inviting coming in from the morning cold and everything we had was exquisite! It's been almost a year since we've been in Oregon and I'm STILL craving Elmer's! French toast is good, from thick cut toast. Hash browns are excellent; you can order them with extras like onions, bell peppers, & cheese, and it seems really fresh. The breakfast burrito is huge with avocado and sour cream. It took a very long time to get the food and the place was nearly empty. Update 3/18/11: Went to the SW Adams location this time and had the Crab Cake Benedict Skillet. It's $11.99 and huge. Three meals for me. There are two crab cakes that are ok, with not enough "hollandaise" sauce, but the scrambled eggs and hashbrowns underneath were decent. Biscuit was good, but it's hard to screw up a regular biscuit. The food was a little slow to come out, like the other location, and the waitress wasn't that friendly, though kept our glasses full. However, scanning the menu....my first impression is that the menu looks like a Semi-Homemade Cookbook™ by Sandra Lee © . I mean, why bother going to a restaurant if everything is from Pillsbury™, some brand meat™, or boxed veggie burger© . I settled on the "German" pancake and eggs with fruit. Pancake was seriously huge and surprisingly not bad. It was a little lacking in flavor (maybe it would have helped to get a fruit topping). The eggs were scrambled and probably better than any other I have had in the area. Fruit was not fresh and disappointing. Overall....not bad. Close to what I'm accustomed to (diners in NJ). I like the basic lemon, butter and powdered sugar. The hearty biscuits and gravy definitely will stick to your ribs. If you're looking for your basic down home breakfast, check it out. I came here on Sunday with a group of 9, and we were sat immediately. The hostess took our drink orders, so we got them pretty fast. As we were perusing through the menu, we waited for our server to stop by. 10 minutes pass..20 minutes pass...after 30 minutes, we flagged someone down to get our server. After another 5 minutes, she comes and takes our order. As we watch the clock, we realize how long it's been since we ordered. After waiting an ADDITIONAL 25 minutes for our food, we asked our server why it was taking so long, and all she said was "let me get my manager." We didn't want to escalate it, but from the time we walked through the door to the time we got our food, was over an HOUR. When the manager came by, he just said that they are slammed and one of the dishes we ordered, the German pancake, takes 20 minutes to make, and it's delaying the food. We told him that if the server, who was very unknowledgeable, and didn't even know what was actually ON the menu until we showed her, actually told us about the wait time for the pancake, then we wouldn't have ordered it. He then mumbled, "oh, yeah, I guess we should probably tell people that." After the food arrived, everyone started scarfing things down because we were so hungry! To our dismay, pretty much EVERY dish had no flavor. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the German pancake, omelettes, chicken fried steaks, and eggs benedict. All of it had ZERO flavor. It was SO bland I had to add ketchup and salt to my omelet. ALSO, I tried the German pancake right when it came out, and it was COLD. So the kitchen was definitely NOT waiting for it to come out of the oven. They basically lied and just wanted to cover their butts. What pissed us off more, is that ANY good manager would apologize for the delay, try to accommodate the customers, so that they return. BUT this one, said the delay was because of what we ordered, and didn't apologize whatsoever! Terrible service, terrible food, terrible manager. Never coming back. read more

Just because we are in a pandemic doesnt give you the eateries the right to serve cr@p food and give bad service. Its like you just dont care. And that is what we got at elmers on Oct 24th at around 11 am. out food was OK. mi wife got the crab bennies and i got the hungary ranchers. her food was as expected but went cold quick. She wanted more sauce. however after the food was dropped off we never saw the server again till the check was offered. I had coffee and my breakfast was cold and the hashbrowns were undercooked. i scarfed the eggs down quick because if they got colder they would just be nasty. anyhow the server never came back til the end. i pushed that food down with my one cup of coffee. it would have been nice to see her again maybe i could have gotten hot food. who knows. her tip was lousy. its like she didnt even care to try to earn a good tip. read more

This was my first visit to an Elmer's, so I wasnt too certain what to expect. The inside feels like every other chain diner you've ever been to. The overall atmosphere dated, and the place is in serious need of a remodel. Aside from that, there is also the "all in one" menu that I personally dislike. Something about having to flip through multiple pages unsure when I'm going to hit lunch and dinner options is just unsettling to me. That aside the food was surprisingly tasty! I had the breakfast burger which apparently is a seasonal special here, and the bacon jam that accompanied it really stole the show. I love the idea of a chain restaurant staying with locally sourced products even if the overall plate suffers the "chain diner" feel. I would probably go back to Elmer's, but with so many mom and pop breakfast joints in Hillsboro it will probably be a while before I return. read more

This place is ok, they were nice enough to let our table of 5 come in 40 min to closing time. I don't know if it was because it was almost closing time but the place was a mess. Food bits and trash all over the floor. There was still 4 other tables when we got there and the waitress came to get our order pretty fast, the food took forever to come out. We got the fish and shrimp basket, this was the only thing that was good and if I ever come back here it will be for this. We got a breakfast skillet that was missing salt and flavor, it was plain. The waffle I got tasted like the kind that are frozen, best thing was the fruit on top, and the blueberry pancakes would have been ok if they had been fully cooked! The waitress did apologize and say they were training a new cook...so maybe that's why. Overall the staff was nice and I might return for some fish and chips. read more

He greets folks with a smile when he is out on the floor and unlike managers in other restaurants we've been in, he lends a hand and helps out when things are busy or their shorthanded. Elmer's is a diner chain located in the Pacific NW who utilizes NW ingredients. Consider this locally owned chain to be another Denny's or IHOP if you will. Elmer's serves BLD (breakfast, lunch and dinner), but unfortunately the execution is pretty much mediocre food. Not the greatest, nor the worst, but this is a decent spot if you want something nearby and hearty. Decor is very American Country. Seems a bit outdated, but if you're hungry, you don't really notice your surroundings =X I came here with with a group of buddies for a late breakfast one morning. Service from our waitress was great. She was attentive with our water glasses and was able to get us out in a jiffy since we were sorta in a rush. COUNTRY BENEDICT: scrambled eggs + sausage patties upon a fresh Pillsbury biscuit (not sure if that is a NW ingredient?). Drenched in a savory, country gravy sauce and topped with chopped chives, this is a sodium-rich, hearty dish! There's a side of fresh fruit or NW Hashbrowns. I opted for the fruit since I wanted to be a tad healthier than what I was devouring for my entree. I wouldn't mind ordering this dish again since it was pleasing. I woke up yesterday morning craving one of Elmer's German pancakes. As soon as we could get ready, I dragged my boyfriend out for breakfast. I hadn't even heard of a German pancake before the first time I came to this restaurant and spotted it on the menu. If you have never tried one, I'd compare it to a giant, thick crepe that is formed into a bowl where you mix up a delicious butter-lemon-syrup soup in the middle. I like to cut it into slices, like a pizza, roll each slice up, and eat it. So. Ridiculously. Good. Other than the German pancakes, Elmer's has the standard breakfast fare. Eggs, waffles, pancakes, etc. Everything I've had was good, and I would say it's definitely better than IHOP. read more
