This place never disappoints and I love that. Its food is fun and great. People are amazing.

Elwood's Shack isn't a lot to look at on the outside. Or the inside, for that matter. There are only a few tables to sit at, and the decor is fairly sparse. The restaurant is hidden behind a minor shopping center too, and the parking lot is kind of small. But this place is 100% worth stopping for if you want Memphis BBQ, and let me explain why. I ordered the Elwood's BBQ Burrito with pork. And the size of the burrito by itself will fill anyone who has an appetite. The burrito is mostly pork too- check my photo if you don't believe me. Even though I went before 10 AM (and only the breakfast and brunch menus were available), the BBQ pork inside the burrito itself was delicious and well made and was made to high Memphis BBQ standards. The other ingredients were fresh too. The fried eggs, jalapeños, potatoes, cheese, and such added a nice flavor- but the absolute real star was the pork. I was given two BBQ sauce containers, and it had that tomatoey, thin Memphis BBQ sauce flavor that you expect. The staff was super friendly too, and they joked and chatted with the regulars who were there- first time in a long time that I have heard a staff member say 'Tell your momma hi for me!'. Super friendly and they wanted to make sure that I got what I wanted to eat. This was an amazing breakfast burrito, and I heartily recommend that anyone who stops in tries it out! read more

At first glance, one may completely miss this place. It's located along side the Lowe's parking lot and honestly didn't look like an actual storefront. But behind that unsuspecting facade lies the most astounding array of meats we've found so far on our food-journey through Memphis! We were greeted by a friendly lady who was chatting away with her fellow coworkers behind an impressive counter. It smelled intensely smokey and delicious in there. Husband went for their Elwood's Woody (pastrami, 2 eggs over hard, provolone, avocado, bacon and mayo on marbled rye). THAT was intensely delicious. I opted for avocado on toast...with a side of 2 eggs over medium with bacon. (I traditionally don't eat bacon but it sounded like it would hit the spot. ) We are dying to go back to get down on more of their fantastic food! This should be a Triple D find. It is a real side of the road little dive in the parking lot of a Home Depot. It has picnic tables outside and a few tables inside its eclectic shack. The lady taking orders and serving food is a special kind and friendly woman that exudes happiness. She gets it and knows how to make you feel welcome. Yes, there was two of us. We just couldn't decide on what to order so we picked a few items and shared. We got the KC Candy Melt which had burnt ends, jalapenos, bbq sauce and a TON of cheesy goodness. It was grillled on a Texas buttered toast. I HIGHLY recommend. The BBQ sauce is just the right amount to make this delicious with the never ending pully cheese. Second up was the Seattle Dog. The best damn dog there is. If you love specialty hot dogs, this is a don't miss. The hot dog holds up to the toppings. It's thick and juicy. There is a bit of cream cheese, with slaw, grilled onions, jalapeños and BBQ sauce. My personal favorite. Third up was the Debris Poboy. The roast beef is tender and flavored like grandma used to make. The bread is authentic Poboy French bread, trust this guy from New Orleans. It made me miss home. It's a great throw back to being a kid. We finished with the blue cheese and jalapeno coleslaw and tator salad. Both were delicious. The tator salad was really creamy and tasted a bit like there could've been cream cheese in it. YUM! No we didn't eat all of it and of course we took leftovers home. lol I'd definitely go back when in Memphis. That dog will forever be on my mind. read more

Yes, it's really located in the Lowe's parking lot, tucked in by the side, but don't miss it! There are few seats inside but plenty of tables outside (though only a few really in the shade). We stopped by around lunchtime and they do a steady business but staff was very friendly and they were getting orders filled promptly. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich, smaller version, with cole slaw. Small size was plenty big for a lunch serving! The bun was warm and toasted, with just the right crunch on the edges. The pulled pork was outstanding! Great flavor, super tender and the cole slaw was the perfect compliment. Friend had the pulled pork salad which looked great also. I have heard about this place for YEARS since I moved to Memphis and I'm so disappointed because the food was mediocre and somehow my bread was soggy ALL over. For a place that people swear by, I don't know if possibly I just had bad luck with my order or something but it just didn't hit the spot. On top of everything, we waited for over 30 minutes for our food to be ready which was a bit ridiculous to me for such a small space with basic items. I'm glad we tried it so that we know where is and isn't worth going for us and this place just didn't hit the mark for us. The brisket, sausage, and beans were amazing. The potatoes salad was less than desirable and the chicken was dry but was still good with bbq sauce. We also ordered the grits, brisket, English muffin with fried eggs and bbq sauce. Now this was AMAZING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We also order a Philly cheese brisket wrap to go and will update this when we try it. The service was great! The young guy at the register was so patient with us as it was our first time. Solid and awesome staff here. We showed up during a system failure/upgrade and they were just awesome and happy to see us. I nabbed the burnt ends and some balogna and it did not disappoint. Now I did have to remove the jalapeño's from the plate and there was a masters sauce of some sort but it did not deter from the burnt ends or the bark. And it was the just cooked right burnt ends that weren't overly dry but were just to that breaking point. There was just the right amount of perfectly cooked fatty chunks that made me almost feel like I might have had some ribeye in there. Beans were solid and the slaw wasn't too bad but needed to be more creamy for me. Glad it wasn't packed bc it was hot out but glad we found this hole in the wall. TL; DR - Best BBQ in Memphis. Sample size of 5. Food (5/5) - Ribs were the absolute star - meat slid right off the bone. Chicken wings were equally as juicy / moist, everything was really well seasoned. We really didn't need any of the barbecue sauce even though that also tasted pretty phenomenal. The shack attack is a great deal if you have 4 hungry people (or 3 really ravenous ones maybe). Also comes with samplers of the pulled pork, sausage and brisket. The sausage is the dark horse - very flavourful and crispy, just a hint spicy and sweet. Beans and slaw, can't go wrong with both of these. Beans were piping hot too. Service (5/5) - Prompt. Great no frills BBQ joint! Its physically address is on Summer Ave. But it's next to a Lowe's and we parked there and walked over. We were here on a Saturday around lunch and ordered and were served very quickly. I would think it would be packed during the week at this time. Interior is sparse with maybe 8-10 tables and a couple of TV's to watch. There are probably 6-8 picnic tables outside with 2 large fans to keep the air moving. We both had pulled pork with Texas toast, beans and potato salad. Everything tasted awesome! Pulled pork was juicy and flavorful. BBQ sauce was very good not too hot with a good twang to it. It's literally a shack in the back of a parking lot off of Summer Ave. I stared at the menu forever because everything sounded phenomenal. Excellent food in a cool little spot. They seem to be best known for breakfast and brunch, but I was there for BBQ and I was not disappointed! The location is a little hidden, but that just makes it a hidden gem! There is a Lowe's home improvement store just around the corner from the front entrance, so you can park there and walk around. It is also possible to park on the street in front of the restaurant. The place may not look like much, but it is definitely worth a stop. The food is fantastic, and the service is great as well. I had the two meat plate, opting for beef brisket and pulled pork. It included sides, so I got baked beans and potato salad. Texas toast (along with some pickles and onions) is also included. Everything was excellent. The meats were smoky and flavorful, the Texas toast was very good, the potato salad was really great, and the beans were excellent with a little bit of sweetness and some bell peppers in them. There are tables both indoors and out. Nothing fancy, but comfortable and convenient. I was on a road trip passing through, and am so very happy that I made the stop. Whenever I find myself passing through (or anywhere near) Memphis, I will absolutely stop at Elwood's Shack for great food with excellent service. read more

This was the best BBQ we tried in all of Memphis by far! You walk into an unassuming little building and are wowed with delicious food! We were first timers, and the man who took our order was very patient and explained everything and answered all our questions. We wanted to try a variety, so he suggested we order "Elwoods Shack Attack." This is a huge platter with chicken leg and wings, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, AND sausage, plus 2 sides (we tried the slaw and beans.) You can easily share this with a couple people, and the price is reasonable. Everything was seriously so good; every bite! My favorite was probably either the wings or the ribs. First time here. I'm from Texas where barbecue is perfected. Brisket was very tasty but the fat wasn't quite rendered enough and was chewy. Pulled pork was dry and bland but made for a good transport for the sauce. Sauce was very good and I don't usually like sauce, you know, because good barbecue doesn't need sauce. Chicken had a nice seasoning on the skin but the meat was tough and bland and the seasoning on the skin just did not carry through. Beans were excellent! Slaw was just run off the mill ordinary slaw. Toast was very good. Overall, it's probably a good place to eat. Would definitely try come back to try their other menu items. But would not crave or recommend them for barbecue. read more
