I would actually give them one star but their French Toast/funnel cake saved them from this demise. Coffee was lousy, the hollandaise sauce on the eggs Benedict was bitter and sour, and the bacon was frost bitten tasting. We've been twice to make sure these issues weren't just a fluke but only ended up with the same results. Being by the college and in a decent area, they have the potential to have lines out the doors if standards were raised on quality. It's a shame. read more

I came here with my parents for breakfast when they were famished and we were sorely disappointed. My mom ordered a pancake and it was burned black on one side and rubbery throughout. When she let the server know, she insisted on bringing my mom another one when my mom was asking for the refund. The one she brought was not good. My dad ordered French toast and it was also burned black on one side and it was so hard he could not eat it. I ordered what I thought was french toast but it was a weird fried concoction with tons of fried batter chips forming a mountain on my bowl. It was overall a terrible experience. My review is just on the two dishes I had, the (koodideh beef) kabab and the chicken kafta kabab. I've had some bad kabab's before but both the beef and chicken were inedible. They lacked seasoning and were tasteless. The beef was so tough that even after I sliced it up into smaller pieces, I still couldn't chew it. A couple of the pieces were also still raw. Best service. I'm in the restaurant industry and I always appreciate those who go above and beyond. The food and drinks are delicious but the service is what really got my attention. When the server & busser were both busy, the chef saw me try to get someone's attention and was unsuccessful. The chef then jumped into action and I got what I needed. Caprese Eggs Benedict .... Pretty awesome and a nice spin on regular Eggs Benedict. Food was great, a nice casual place for some grub.

Unfortunately my family likes this place (for whatever reason), so I get dragged back to this restaurant every once in a while, although I'm not a fan. At all. The service is hit-or-miss. Either the owner and his family greet us warmly, or one of the cooks comes out and brusquely, standoffishly takes our order, barely giving us a chance to finish before walking away. Then of course we have to call out our order to him and hope he hears it. Ridiculous. I will say that the ambience is very nice...if you like cafeteria-style fluorescent lighting, 20-year-old decor, and big-screen TVs to watch the game on. Very romantic and homey. We came here on some holiday, Thanksgiving or Easter maybe, and the food quality was even worse than it usually is. My "tomato soup" tasted like marinara sauce right from the jar. I ordered the fish fillet, but got fish cakes. My family ordered something with garlic, yet when it came out it was so bland it tasted like nothing. So they remade everyone's order, and they all came out at different times. It was a joke. The last time I got roped into coming here (with family of course), I ordered the eggs Benedict with potatoes. The potatoes were bitter (how is that possible?), but the eggs were decent enough. Then a couple hours later...oh boy...upset stomach. I guess the eggs weren't cooked enough. Thankfully we had some charcoal pills and holistic whatever handy, or I would have been dashing to the commode, posthaste. I can only speak for their breakfast, because that's all I've had... and there is a reason for that. HOLY FRENCH TOAST. Typically we order a half order to share among the table, like a breakfast appetizer. It's as if funnel cake and french toast got together and made a baby. They also give you this homemade dipping sauce/syrup, as well as the usual maple syrup. I always get get something else to go with it, usually the meatloaf scramble, because I always need something savory to go along with the sweetness of the french toast. Nothing ever disappoints, but to be honest, the star of the show is this french toast. The two guys are always there, a younger guy and an older one (maybe father/son? I think they are the owners?). They always seem to be working very hard and and are so attentive. The service at Emle's is always great and so is the food. Went in on a Saturday night with my husband. They have a person playing a keyboard off to the side. He sets a wonderful ambiance. The waiter was timely with orders. Menu prices were mostly in the range of $13-20 for dinner items. Waiter listed the specials with no mention of the pricing but after reviewing the menu I expected somewhere in the same range. For the Lamb Chop special, I was told it was served with mash potatoes and asparagus. What arrived was 3 tiny lamb chops, with no more than 3 ounces in total of meat and one asparagus spear, with lots of summer squash and zucchini. And a $30 bill for that dinner. I was completely displeased with what came from that kitchen. I had to stop at a drive through to get another meal after paying way too much there. We will not return to this place. Doesn't matter if it tasted good since you leave hungry. read more

I took some friends here for breakfast because they were visiting. I ordered a breakfast plate with their signature french toast. Emle's is 2 for 2. We went for lunch again. I tried one of the daily specials. It came with a sauce that included creme. However, they were happy to make it for me without creme, a sign that it is fresh. Also, I had double veggies instead of potatoes. The cod was absolutely fantastic. 2 large pieces cooked in an amazing sauce that included red and orange pepper cubes and other items..including my beloved garlic. What was especially nice was that the sauce also rolled over to the veggies, giving them the most wonderful taste. My wife loved the quality of the lamb so much last time that she ordered it again. It was equally high quality and tasty. She loves the garlic yogurt sauce to put on top. She had fatoush instead of salad, and said it was very good. Not the very best we've ever had (we've probably had fatoush at 30-40 restaurants), but she said it was very good and she would order it again. I had the salad again, and it was fresh and plentiful. Service was very good. I drink a lot of water, and it was always filled. My wife ordered an Arnold Palmer. When the lemonade v tea ratio wasn't to her taste, they were more than happy to add extra lemonade. This restaurant is very customer centric. We really like this place a lot. Won't got twice a week because we don't want to tire of it (burn out) but this is clearly on our rotation of places to go on a regular basis. Our server Mike was wonderfully cooperative when I told him I had diabetes diet restrictions. As with before, I was told it was he would happily make any modifications that are possible. I ordered a breakfast burrito. It came super fast so impressive. So sad that when I checked it out a hair was cooked into the egg. I would have ignored it, I would have taken another one. However, I read this same problem on a previous review. Gross!!!! If that hair is visable imagine the stuff you CAN'T see. It's my fault for going. In the end, I left. The burrito was $12.99! And the egg was brown from being overcooked. Not staying to pay for another maybe more questionable over priced meal. read more

I was convinced before I actually ate here that I would love this place. I was wanting to like this place so much because firstly, I had heard from various people that it was really good and every time I walked by it, it was full of people. So after I ate here, of course, I realized it was too good to be true. Food: It is mediocre. I had the lamb chops which were actually very good. I believe they were seasoned with Herb's d Provence. My meal came with very large sliced and freshly cooked veggie mix of Broccoli and carrots, which were cooked so that they still remained crunchy(this I liked), mashed potatoes to top it off. My husband ordered the kebab plate and the kebab was not good; it was rubbery and could not be cut with a fork, which is a bad sign the meat was either left out too long or frozen. After complaining to Sam, our waiter, he ordered the hamburger, which was good and very large. The Service: A+!!! One of the best things I can honestly expect out of a restaurant is good service. If the food is mediocre but service is excellent, then I can return to eat there again. To me service makes the meal all the more pleasurable. In this case, Sam excelled! He was friendly, helpful and assertive to a level that I have rarely experienced within the United States. When my husband pointed out the sub standards of the kebab, Sam was quick to agree and ask what can get for him instead. He offered to cook the food himself so to ensure it was prepared to our liking and then he offered many apologies when we paid the bill. I was impressed by his superb customer service skills. It was obvious to me that he is either owner or somehow invested in this business. I wish that every business was run by people like this, who value their customers and also know how to run a business with pride. The interior of the restaurant is nothing special. It is clean and organized with plenty of tables and chairs and a TV, that wasn't on (9 pm at night on Saturday). My one suggestion for this restaurant is that it needs to define itself more. It seems neither here nor there. It has a huge menu with lots of selections like a Deli, but I always feel this is not good because it waters down the actual menu. They are more like a generic café than anything. However, it is one block from CSUN, so im guessing they make the most money from students and having a variety of foods brings in more people. I will definitely return to this place to get a second chance to experience their breakfasts that other reviewers rave about. There is no hostess, it's a fend for your own table and then be prepared to sit for a while due to there is not one assigned waiter to a section or to your table. The hollandaise sauce was thick and tasted as if the eggs curdled but they kept adding butter to make it work. The potatoes were shriveled burnt up pieces that weren't even edible. The sausage patty was super oily and fatty. I know sausage patties contain oil and is pretty much impossible to take off all the oil but it's as if they cooked it with a tremendous amounts of oil when in reality you don't need a lot or any oil to cook a pork sausage patty. And not to mention it took approximately 45 minutes for our food to arrive when it wasn't even busy at all!!
