I've been there twice and i think these are the areas for improvement. Service: They seem somewhat disorganized and so wait times for your meal can be quite long. We waited more than an hour for our barbecue. The quality of the food is below the standard that you would expect at a Korean restaurant. Also the food is not consistent. Came back here recently to get our Korean fix. Opted for the all you can eat samgyupsal since they had a deal that day. The food was good especially the banchans (side dishes). Service is a bit slow especially refilling the banchans. I can sense a lack of enthusiasm to refill when they should be proactively checking. Although my main complaint is the lack of ventilation which I feel is necessary when food is being grilled in the dining area. They said smoke is not produced bc they use infrared cooking appliances. Does not matter what the fuel is. When grilling, smoke happens. If they cannot place exhaust hoods over each grilling table they need to increase the outside air exchange rate in the restaurant to remove the grilling smoke. This is a code requirement. read more

The standard korean BBQ place with your own grill. The food isn't greatly presented or seasoned well. The service is usually understaffed and presented in an unprofessional manner. One guy said, "so you guys want sides", that shows the level of professionalism. I have had better where Korean restaurants have only 5 tables but yet would be packed and backed up due to their service, food, and atmosphere. The food was on par with any decent Korean restaurant although they could benefit from improved ventilation-- we left smelling like Korean BBQ for the rest of the day though we didn't opt for BBQ. When my party arrived there were maybe 1 or 2 tables already seated. We were sat, the waitress took our drinks and order, we waited, 3 tables came in, and they got their drinks first! How do you justify $24.99 unlimited dining when the staff is going to take 15 minutes to bring drinks, not to mention try to even get a refill of any food! You guys do Yakiniku right?" employee-"what?" me-"Yakiniku? you know the style of cooking yall do?" employee-"Im sorry I dont know what your saying" me-"...you guys have grills on tables that we can cook meat on" emplyee-"yeah! we have the grill in the middle and you cook it yourself" I dont know about yall but when an employee does not know what type of cooking is being served at their own restaurants I would not expect much. I did go for the ALL YOU CAN EAT here at Emonae but they only give you three selection of meat...back home in hawaii you get 8-12 meats you can choose from. When i found out we could only choose three I wanted to leave. The only good thing about this place would be the Korean fried chicken (soy garlic) its crispy and has a good amount of sweet and salty. But if you're looking for a real, constructive critical review for Korean BBQ, keep on truckin'... I was looking forward to eating here since my friend recommended it for dinner. She's also a native Californian and swore this was one of the better Korean BBQ places that was up and coming in Grand Rapids. Oh how I wish she was right... We arrived at a decent looking (yet empty) plaza on a Wednesday night. Inside there were a few tables and it didn't seem too busy. We were seated in about 5 minutes and perused the menu. Basically we had 2 options-- AYCE (all you can eat) BBQ with 3 kinds of meat OR combos of meats. AND you read that right...3. Kinds. Of. Meat. Did my eyes fail me? I was baffled, troubled, and distressed. $21.99 for AYCE 3 meats. This number of meats is the lowest I've ever seen and offering 2 appetizers with few banchan was NOT going to make up for that disappointment. Gen Korean BBQ in California (restaurant chain) offers over 30 MEATS for $24.99 (https://yelp.com/biz/gen-korean-bbq-house-san-jose). I'll let you be the judge on what's the better bang for your buck. So we decided that 3 meats we weren't excited about wasn't worth the $21.99 (even if we were starving). We opted for the BBQ Combo #1 - Kalbi, Bulgogi, Dak Gul, Shrimp with pancake, rice, and banchan for $52 ($26 per person for 2). We thought since the BBQ Combos were pricier, the quality of meats would be better-- we were DEAD WRONG. The kalbi was NOT the real kalbi we're all used to loving!! There was no bone-in (hence it's saeng kalbi) and I couldn't even make sense of the marinate. If there was or wasn't seasoning, my taste buds was confused. The bulgogi was unfortunately the best part about the whole combo but it was still too sweet for my taste. The dak gul was literally sliced chicken breast that I could buy at a grocery market, and despite claims of "sauce", it was absolutely tasteless like a generic grilled chicken salad. There was like 3-4 shrimp the size of my thumb. All the meats were chewy and hard. I'm not sure if it was fresh (bought and handled the day of) but gamey beef is never a good sign. Disappointed in taste quality and quantity. SoCal, THE Koreatown, has Kang Ho-dong Baekjeong (KHB) with Beef Combo for $59.99 (brisket, prime rib eye, marinated boneless short rib) that came with 10+ banchan and appetizers (https://www.yelp.com/biz/kang-ho-dong-baekjeong-los-angeles-4) The quality and quantity at KHB were divine-- all the meats melted in my mouth and were high-quality in texture and seasoning. All the beef were marbled perfectly and tenderized to perfection. It's always a 1-2 hour wait for KHB and LA peeps know where the good kush is at *thumbs up* It's hard to be an advocate for Emonae when you've had the best of California. It's fair game to compare Michigan Emonae vs. the best of California when Emonae is charging its customers similar prices to California KBBQ without elevating and meeting quality and quantity standards. I'm sure they are a local mom pop shop...but is it really best effort? Their service was lacking too, as the servers were more interested in talking to each other and their friends than paying attention to their customers. It was hard for our table and others to get a hold of them throughout a slow weekday night. The interior and ambiance were casual and tacky, and the tables were slow to be cleaned and sticky, ew. I felt really disappointed overall and I couldn't justify giving more than 1 Star (I mulled over 1 or 2 stars for 10 straight minutes. But nothing merited another star for 2). Went for lunch with a group from work. Nice setting even though in a strip mall. Basically one waiter who was very busy but was very polite towards us. Food came out very quickly. I ordered the Jeyuk Bokkem . It was pork belly with stir fried veggies in a spicy sauce. It was very good. The spice was not overwhelming but just enough for a little kick. Had lunch today at Emonae korean BBQ. I had read the reviews of this place before I went. I had nothing but a five star experience at lunch. The service was prompt, and Robert was very friendly. I ordered the Squid stir fry, my wife had bimbibap. It was served on a hot cast iron plate, still very hot from the kitchen. It was excellent, I have eaten this dish at plenty of other Korean restaurants, this was the best by far. The bimbibap was great (I tried my wife's), I would order it with no hesitation. The all you can eat bbq is pretty well priced but the choice of meat they use seems to be on the lower side quality and it only comes with a choice of chicken which is kinda bland, pork that's more like bacon and beef which was riddled with fat.
