TL;DR - If you're allergic to nuts, beware of service. We made a reservation for this restaurant not realizing that the menu changed for Father's Day (totally understandable, since the website did clarify that certain holidays may have specialty menus). We already noted in our reservation that my partner has a serious allergy to nuts, and expressed our concern about the new menu to the waitress because it had nuts. She assured us that they can accommodate nut allergies, so we decided to stay and trust what she told us instead of pivoting to a new restaurant. The first salad had nut toppings. They forgot about my partner's allergy, and we had to remind them. They eventually served my partner an alternate salad plate without nuts. When the eggplant dish arrived (family style), they placed the used salad serving utensils (that visibly still had nuts on it) in the eggplant dish. We were confused (1) why they would place dirty serving utensils on a fresh plate and (2) why they would place utensils that visibly had nuts on it mixed into a dish about to be eaten by someone with a nut allergy. We alerted the waitress, who apologized and replaced the serving utensils with fresh ones. The most egregious example was when dessert arrived. The waitress served us a panna cotta specially made by the chef, which was a nice substitute for the pecan tart. But when she served the Nutella French toast, she assured to us that there were "no nuts" in it. When I pushed further, asking about the Nutella, she looked alarmed when she realized what Nutella is made of and then apologized saying she'll get us an alternate dish. That's right... the waitress did not realize NUTella had nuts in it. If I did not press further, my partner might have trusted the waitress's word and ate the toast, getting a serious allergic reaction. Overall, we understand it's hard to accommodate dietary restrictions. However, assuring your guest that you can accommodate their nut allergy, forgetting your guest has a nut allergy (multiple times over multiple dishes), and telling your guest that a dish with nuts in it does not have nuts in it is unacceptable. read more

Recently, I took my parents who were visiting from out of town for their birthdays and we really enjoyed the plant-based Sunday brunch. The restaurant was pretty empty but I heard that was due to the summer slowdown. The service was wonderful, although the timing of the dishes could have been a little faster. The set menu was great, we enjoyed almost every single item, the corn soup with coconut milk was fantastic, as was the arugula and radicchio salad and the frittata. My least favorite was the pasta with mushroom ragout, only because it felt like something I could make at home, but it was still tasty. Everything else was unique, and the dessert chocolate cheesecake tarte was so good that even my mom liked it (and she is super picky with desserts), it wasn't very sweet (the ultimate asian dessert compliment) and had a great texture, including the crust. I loved that everything was "all you can eat", so you can always ask for more of any dish, but it was already so much food we couldn't take too much advantage of that. I went to celebrate a friend's birthday and it was wonderful. The food was outstanding and the drinks were perfectly balanced. Service was quick and the staff were polite and so generous. They surprised us at the end with sorbet and prosecco! It was a dimly lit intimate setting, but with fun recognizable music perfectly playing in the background. I came with some girlfriends for Winter Restaurant Week and enjoyed the dinner option, 3 courses for $40. The wine pairing was pretty affordable at $20 but didn't opt in for that. I started with the octopus/polpo appetizer. Mine was very flavorful and cooked well but my friend said hers was a little chewy. We got Mac and cheese for the table; while cooked well, it was overall a miss for me. For my entree I ate the Amish chicken which was sublime and a good portion size. My friends who ordered steak said it was a small portion and was just ok. Lastly I ordered the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It was tasty but very sweet, which may be the point haha. A birthday celebration in DC! We came to DC toward the end of winter restaurant week. This is a place that you definitely want reservations for. We decided to go with the 3 courses for $40 each. We arrived early so we were seated at the bar where we enjoyed mocktails, which were beyond delicious, along with the olive spread and bread and fried artichokes. Both the bar service and table service were incredible. They were very attentive. The restaurant offers a cool vibe with the bar and televisions in one section, and the other corners providing an ambiance of romantic to friend hang out. As usual, Equinox does not disappoint. It wasn't too crowded, since it was a weekday night, unlike during Sunday brunch. Their à la carte menu is great, but they also have standing five-course tasting menus (including a vegan one!) which is fun. The white bean soup and coconut panna cotta were our favorite dishes. The cocktail menu is great too, including some creative mocktails. We went to celebrate an anniversary and noted it in our reservation, and the staff thoughtfully offered us complimentary beverages and added something special to our dessert. Always a nice touch! Round two included the hen of the woods mushrooms, swordfish in puttanesca sauce, and skirt steak. Each one carefully thought out and enjoyable. Fantastic upscale restaurant. The atmosphere here is very nice but also welcoming and warm. Staff are very friendly and attentive, but the food is really where they shine. There are some fish and meat products on the menu, but also a lot of plant based options. We are plant based, so I can't speak for the meat items, but the dishes we had were incredible. I happened to come during the week they had an Icelandic tasting menu, and the skyr and blueberries dessert was to DIE for. Like seriously, I'm leaving this dessert money in my will. So the servers here are the kindest and most attentive I've experienced so far in DC. The hostess was also such a nice person. I pay attention to these things because it can make or break a dining experience. I came for dinner one day and got a table by the window so I loved that. I ordered fried artichokes as an appetizer and they were delicious. If you like Artichokes, definitely order it. As my main, I got the fish that was supposed to be Halibut but it was a different kind that day which was cooked well but lacked a bit of flavor. The menu says it's served on a bed of tortellini. Tell me why you get 3 pieces of pasta. I had to ask for more so they should give that as a disclaimer in the description. Negatives: The combination of flavors did not hit right. I ordered the duck (which was delicious) but the sides were pork and collard greens, which was a strange amalgamation of flavors with the duck. My fiancé had the same dish and agreed that the combination was unexpected. My mother had the Zaatar Salmon but said there was an overpowering flavor of charred broccolini. I also added the mimosas which was not bottomless but rather a bottle to share. For $35, per person, I don't think it's worth it. That should be the price for an unlimited amount of mimosas. How can a restaurant be known for a plant-based tasting menu and still be able to eff it up? If I could give this place 0 stars or less I would. Me and my boyfriend arrived to our 7:30 reservation at 7:27 and they said they needed about 5-10 minutes to clean the table. Fine, sure we'll wait at the bar. She gave us the drink menu and we ordered our drinks (which you can't even do on the iPad, so what was the point of that?) We had to go to the bartender to order our drinks. It was about 7:50 and we were still waiting for our table. I get if we were walk-ins, but we had reservations! What was up with the rather long wait for just the table. Little to know our knowledge, this was just the preface of the continuous waits throughout the night. Finally got to our table and we both decided to do the tasting menus. One plant-based and one market menu. This is exactly the reason my boyfriend picked this place; so we can both enjoy a 5 course dinner with our dietary restrictions. 1st course- I had substitute my soup for mac n cheese. Just your typical mac n cheese, nothing crazy. My bf got the asparagus soup. We both aren't a big fan of soup, but you know you're doing something correct if we both thought it was tasty! 2nd course (where it all went downhill)- We finished our 1st course and waited for some time to get our 2nd course. By some time I mean over 30 minutes, but fine whatever we'll wait. My bf got his dish which he said was one of the best octopus he's ever had I was in the bathroom when my dish came out and it was rigatoni. I was pretty sure, my tasting menu didn't have pasta, but I forgot what my 2nd course. So yup, they mixed out my bf's market menu 3rd course for my 2nd course. Meaning, they had fed me non vegetarian food. Now how can you be known for a plant based tasting menu and be able to mess that up? He hates inconveniencing wait staff, but this was the first time he was actually genuinely upset enough to leave the restaurant. I however was the one who decided to stay and finish the courses. Eventually, they brought me out my 2nd course when my bf was done with his 2nd course and just waiting around. Our waiter did not even seem apologetic at all. All he said was "I'm sorry, it was a miscommunication error from the kitchen to staff." 3rd course- I got my third course right away which was an eggplant dish, but after this mishap, I was nervouse all my dishes were non-veg. My bf got the rigatoni and they put parmesan cheese on it. While we were ordering he had requested for no parmesan cheese because of his dairy allergy, but of course they messed up again. 4th course- Yikes. I got a mushroom dish with fennel seeds. The roasted rapini was delicious however. My bf got the steak and he wasn't too impressed. 5th course- I got the lemon tart and he got the chocolate ganache which we ended up switching because of his dairy allergy. The pistachio halva ice cream was pretty creamy for it being vegan. The ganache wasn't that great with the coconut shreds, but the edible spoon was pretty cool! Not only did they mess up our dishes multiple times. Side note- You would think if you make one mess up, you wouldn't continue to keep messing up the dishes, but the service was terrible. Our dishes took over 30 minutes to come out. There was a point where were just sitting there waiting around. Towards the end of the night our server was taking shots with table next to us and taking photos with another table, but couldn't even be apologetic to us? He did give us glasses or rose and dessert wine and my tasting menu was on the house, but I would still expect better service from a fine dining restaurant. We were celebrating a special occasion and this experience just ruined the whole night for us. Came to Equinox on a whim after work for their wonderful mushroom Wellington. It appears I was their first customer of the day, however, I waited about 6-7 minutes for the server to come to my table. The hostess did offer water service, and told me the server would be with me soon. I ordered a pomegranate martini and the arugula radicchio salad to start, and I enjoyed both. The server offered tastings of 2 red wines to pair with the delicious Wellington dish. I declined dessert, however, I was offered a lovely complimentary dark chocolate and almond confection to end the meal, which I loved and appreciated. I asked for the check before going to the restroom, and when I returned to the table, it had not been brought yet. I had to ask another server to please bring my check. When my server (who had not introduced himself, btw) brought my check I noticed there was an automatic 20% gratuity included. I believe this may be the reason for the lackluster attentiveness from my server. In spite of this, I will return to enjoy the nice ambiance of Equinox and the delicious food, drinks and dessert. read more

First let me say the hospitality we received at Equinox was top notch. My daughter booked her own dinner reservation for her 21st birthday and she said that every time she called she received the best customer service. When we arrived we were told that we would be put into the wine room since the other room wasn't available. The wine room has nice decor and has a spend limit of $750+. We were told not worry about that since the other room wasn't available. However we were a party of 10 and we met the goal anyway. George was our main waiter and he was accommodating, knowledgeable, and very friendly. We also had Alfredo (I hope I'm spelling that correctly.) George made sure that we were able to still order salmon although it wasn't on the menu. My daughter eats mostly vegan with occasional seafood so that's why she picked the Equinox. However most of her guests don't eat plant based and she wanted to make sure everyone had options. Some of the food ordered were the Chick Pea Frites, Grilled Octopus, Duck Leg, Lamb, Salmon, NY Strip, and Mac and Cheese. The Chick Peas Frites was loved by my daughter - she said it was flavorful and filling. Her dad loved the octopus. He said it was grilled perfectly and seasoned well. The Mac and Cheese was ok as it wasn't as hot temperature wise as we would have liked. The duck leg was good. The NY Strip was an off menu order. It was cooked perfectly at Medium Plus however the accompaniments were a distraction - the carrots alone would've been great. The lamb was cooked well and the pomegranate glaze was good. The several people who ordered salmon were pleased with the taste and the portion size. After dinner they brought out 2 desserts - The Tiramisu and their vegan friendly sorbet. Both were good. We also received complimentary champagne shots for the birthday girl. Overall the food was unique but good and always check the menu before coming or call to see what's available. I thought the value for prix fix $35 three course meal was great; food was flavorful and delicious. For starters we got the jambalaya and pappardelle and both ignited my taste buds. I recommend the jambalaya for mushroom lovers. It also had many spices, complemented with additional vegetables, warmth, and the perfect portion. We were also given warm olive bread to start the meal - it was heavenly. For the second course we got the duck confit, and eggplant involtini. Again, both were delicious. I appreciated that the eggplant wasn't fried or breaded so it didn't feel too heavy. For dessert we ordered the chocolate peanut butter mousse pie and chocolate bundt cake. Both satisfied my sweet tooth! If you're a peanut butter lover, get the mousse pie. It's very rich! The bundt cake was lighter and came with morello cherries. I paired my dessert with cappuccino and it was the perfect ending to my meal. The cappuccino was small for $5.95, but it was very comforting for the end of my meal. Wow wow wow! where else in the city can you get an 8 course all vegan brunch!? I'll wait... My partner is vegan and has been wanting to come here for months so I finally surprised her for our anniversary. Our waiter and the rest of the staff were very attentive and took the time to explain all of the dishes to us. The brunch started with a Butternut Coconut soup which was delicious. I also ordered a a Hibiscus Sparkler cocktail which was a perfect blend of spicy and sweet with the ginger ! I'm not a huge salad person but loved the pears in the Endive Salad and loved the mint flavor of the Israeli Couscous salad. Our favorite courses were the Rigatoni and the French Toast ! I didn't realize until the waiter informed us that the brunch is unlimited so we ordered seconds of the rigatoni The final course was dessert and they brought out cookies and a chocolate apple tart with a candle and a chocolate tag that said "Happy Anniversary". My vegan sister was in town visiting so we did a make your own vegan tour and tried just about every spot in DC. This was in the top without a doubt. It's always a special bonus for me to find a restaurant that caters to both vegans AND non vegans, with equally delicious food. What we had: - Artichoke appetizer - 10/10, perfectly flavored, crispy, dipping sauce was AMAZING, and the it's served with chunks of garlic that is truly the icing on this dish. - Hearts of Palm Crabcake Entree - enjoyed it, large portion, good amount of vegetables. - Salmon with charred Broccolini and quinoa. So good, the salmon was the real star of the dish. Cooked perfectly, crispy edges, and so flavorful. - Cinnamon streusel dessert - the pear compote was so delicious, and vegan. The staff were nice enough to bring the dessert out with a candle for my sisters birthday, which was just so sweet and thoughtful. Service was TOP NOTCH. Equinox was probably better a few years ago, but was absolutely terrible tonight. The ($17) drinks had so much ice that the actual drink was maybe 4-5 sips. The mac and cheese was great but the rest of the food was terrible - the artichokes were mostly breading dipped into a flavorless sauce, my short rib was so tough it was difficult to cut through and was burnt anyway, the brownie dessert was inedible. I'm willing to pay top dollar for top tier food but it just feels like a scam when you leave a restaurant $200 later and your still hungry and feel like you still need a drink because the ones they served you were all ice. Wow a great spot -we had an eight course plant based brunch for Mother's Day. Each dish was fantastic and we left very full and happy.

Choosing a restaurant that a group of people will all enjoy can be difficult -- especially when someone in your group has dietary restrictions. Coming in town to DC for a girls weekend, one of my friends is pescatarian so I wanted to be sure to choose a restaurant that had more than 1 option for her. Enter: Equinox. Equinox's menu offers an amazing selection of fish and plant-based options sprinkled with a couple dishes for carnivores as well. The food was exceptional and would be wonderful for even the meatiest of eaters. I personally enjoyed the hearts of palm appetizer, and swordfish entree for my meal and we also ordered a couple bottles of a delicious prosecco to share. There for my friends birthday, they also brought out glasses of a port wine after our meal and dessert for the birthday girl -- great touch and made us feel very special! Such a great experience! We came here to celebrate a birthday, and they did not disappoint. We both ordered the chef's tasting menus - they have a plant-based and a market (meat) menu. Every course was delicious. My favorites of the night were the chickpea and cauliflower stew, the teriyaki glazed mushrooms, the pan seared steelhead trout, the beet fusilli pasta, and the short rib. We literally did not leave one bite on any one plate. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive. One of the desserts even came to the table with a little happy birthday chocolate and candle. The wine pairing was excellent - we even got a special pour because we were celebrating a birthday thanks to our server. The ambiance is fancy, comfortable, and warm. Restaurant week is a great time to try new places and I'm glad I was able to enjoy dinner here with 5 of my girl friends. It's in dc and close to the white house, so parking was limited on the streets but I lucked out and found and open spot across the street. The restaurant itself is small and cozy with additional seating outdoor in a tent. The area we were in was in the patio section which was nice since we were surrounded by windows. The service was impeccable and I appreciated their patience with us even as a few members of our party were late for our reservation. Dinner was plated beautifully and delicious. I see this as a nice place for business dinners or a casual date night. read more

I'm not vegan but I enjoyed the restaurant beautiful and very good prices, I had the Hawaiian Heart of Palm Cake i had them make it as a entree so it came with 3 cakes I was only able 2 eat 2, the service is what will bring me back read more
