If you like food with roach and rat shit on the side best place to go if you need proof of the rat shit look in the window on the right side of the door. They leave all of the meat and cheeses for cold sandwiches in a cooler buffet style behind the bar like seating. The lids do not lock on those and with the amount of mice and roaches they have you can easily find parts in your sandwiches. When told by many customers they were finding droppings in their food they chose to not clean or call an exterminator but to continue selling the food as it was. read more

Ok...if you read my reviews, I do burgers. Ernie's has a great burger. Period! First let me say that it was less than $6 for a bacon cheeseburger...that's NOT bad. Now about the burger...it was charged grilled with salt and pepper, a perfect medium well...they didn't ask how I wanted it, because I would have screwed that up. The cheese was melted on to the burger, the bacon laid on top. The bacon was crispy and salty and you could taste it in every bite. The cold side of the bun was a ripe slice of tomato (emphasis on the ripe - I won't eat it otherwise) laid on top of cold crisp shredded lettuce. I got mayo, but no onions...why ruin your pallette with a raw onion bomb #amIright? So after I did the quick flip to get the cold side on to the hot side, IT WAS ON! I didn't put it down until I was done. The wife loved the grilled ham and cheese. And the gravy fries were hot. It might have been my mood, how hungry I was, or that we caught the chef after he won $500 on a scratch-off...but I put it on the top of my list for burgers in Gettysburg. Kudos for being in business for almost 100 years. Other eateries in Gettysburg, take note. I got two Texas weiners. These are char grilled hot dogs on a bun topped with chili and raw white onion. I thought the dogs were alright. They were a bit more "heavy duty" than your normal commercial hot dog. The skin is definitely a bit thicker and "snappier" than your average dog. The chili adorning the hot dog is good, albeit nothing special. Basically just ground beef with chili seasoning. I liked the generous amount of minced raw white onions on top. So simple, yet so good. Walking into Ernie's is like putting an old sweatshirt. You feel comfortable and relaxed. The diner atmosphere is nothing fancy, but its clean and nostalgic. Seating at booths or at the counter. My 3 year old and I had lunch there last week. Is there anywhere else you can find a "Cut Up" on the menu? Those who are childless, won't appreciate the convenience of a hot dog being served already cut into pieces for you. No bun, cause she's not going to eat that anyway. And for only $1.70. I'd pay $4+ for her lunch anywhere else and she wouldn't enjoy it near as much without the stool to spin on. FYI...If you're a Coke lover, you won't find much in Gettysburg. Sign on the door said open at 7, went in a little after 11am for an early lunch and not a soul in sight! Lights and everything were all turned off, but door was open and the sign said they were open. If you read the front of ernie's menu, you'll see that they been in business since the 1920s. Amazingly, they've maintained much of this charm to the present day. The interior is cozy and the menu has many diner staples. Breakfast and lunch are their specialities, although they do serve dinner as well. I typically wouldn't recommend going for dinner unless you're in the mood for a dog or burger or fried chicken. They're known for their dogs, though. Of course, I'm a Gettysburg native, so I've been to ernie's many times. But it's been about 12 years or so since My last visit. Until today. The dogs and chili cheese fries are still very good. My only gripe is that they've changed out their grilled, traditional Texas toast hot dog bun for a rather bland conventional bun. This was pretty jarring, since it had been a staple since I was a child. But, it's also of little consequence to a first time visitor, so no penalty marks there. The food is still good for what it is and the place is a local institution...and one of the oldest (and at onetime, only) beer-serving establishments---granted, domestic cans. But still a nice option in what is an otherwise backwards state alcohol policy. If you're looking for a good dog, burger, or even diner-style breakfast, give Ernie's a try. read more

Stopped by while on vacation in Gettysburg. Got a bacon and two egg breakfast. Menu says four slices but mine came with six and the eggs looked more like three and were scrambled perfectly. Since they are know for their Texas Weiner I ordered two to go plus a plain one. Had them for lunch a few hours later and man they were delicious. It's the chili that makes this dog. Wait staff is friendly and also spoke with the cook/owner. Been in continuous business since 1921 so you know they are doing it right. Had a conversation with a local who has been eating there for over twenty years and says anything you order will be excellent. When we walked in, although there were several restaurant personnel standing behind the counter, they seemed a little unsure as to who should seat us, although one of them stepped forward eventually. They had plenty of seating for our largish party. However, the benches had what felt like an abnormally straight back and the chairs had an uncomfortably large pair of seams. However, I'm told it's authentic '50s decor. Despite the slightly uncomfortable seating, my overall eating experience was lovely. I ordered the California Cheeseburger, which has lettuce, caramelized onions, tomato, and mayo. It was quite good and came quickly like the drinks had. I also ordered a regular fries, which was a mistake as I could not finish them myself. I recommend just ordering the small fries if you are getting them as a side. We've been going to Gettysburg forever, and eating at Ernie's for almost as long. Last time we were there was early March 2019: between then and June 8, 2019, something has changed. In my mind this has always been a five star place, but this past Saturday, it is now three. Why? Service was as good as ever, but: it tasted like they changed brands of hot dogs and definitely not for the better. We always get fries with gravy, and they've gone from a rich, brown gravy, to a light brown, watery no-taste type. In other words, Ernie's has gone from being a world class hot dog joint, to an expensive, mediocre hot dog shop. We will be passing through GB again next month and will try Ernie's again. I'm hoping it is not our last OK-we were there yesterday, and dogs & gravy were back to normal! All is well n hot dog land! My daughter and I were in Gettysburg looking at the College and the Battlefield and we found Ernie's completely by surprise. The quality and flavor of the food, the history, the quick service, all of it made this restaurant one of the best we have been to in awhile. If you like servers eating from your plate before you do then you will love Earnie's A friend and I entered Ernie's Texas Lunch with high hopes and expectations of a great breakfast. What came next horrified me and was appalling. There was only one server in the restaurant this morning and I believe her name is Karen. Our server brought out two plates of food that she brought to the booth behind us. An elderly woman was sitting in this booth with her husband who wore a bright red Phyllis hat. Our server seemed to be very friendly with the couple. As the server put the plates on the elderly woman's table she help herself to the bacon on the plate. She then went to the window to pick up one other plate and she began to come towards our table. As she passed the elderly woman's table she picked up the plate she had eaten off of and proceeded to bring it and the plate she had just retrieved from the window. She put both plates on our table. The person I was with received the plate our server was eating bacon from. Confronting our server, she at first denied she ate from the plate, then she fessed up and offered re-do our food. We went to AKA Friscos in Frederick MD the day before for lunch and had a beautiful freshly grilled flank steak salad which was HUGE, an amazing stuffed Italian sandwich on freshly baked bread and a freshly baked potato with for real FRESH oven roasted beef for LESS than we paid Ernie's for the nastiest lunch in our lives. The keyword is FRESH, and Ernie's is SO far from that I think even Ernie would turn over in his grave if he knew what was happening here.
