I'm obsessed with Este. Normally, I'm not keen on trying "New [insert nationality]" cuisine, but Este completely blew me away with it's New Mexican dining. While it's on the pricier side and leans towards tapas-style dishes, the variety and quality of options are outstanding. During a recent double date, we shared several dishes and everything was a hit. My particular favorites were: the East Coast Oysters & the Camarones El Ricas. Our waitress, Nikki, was incredible- so engaging and led us thru the menu to the most incredible selections. The food was all 10/10- and we have high standards. Every bite was a work of art. I'm still confused about my experience here. Admittedly, my expectations were high since Suerte, their sister restaurants, has been my favorite restaurant for the past 4 years, but boy was the food bad. The guacamole was either rotten or had something wrong with it because it had a strong fish flavor. I didn't say anything to watch my partners reaction to make sure it wasn't just me, but he immediately spit it out. We even asked our waiter and he seemed confused. The fish tacos were buried in so much batter they crumbled apart, tasty batter, shame about the fish. The wagyu taco was edible, but more "confusing experiment" than "culinary delight." Thr crispy tuna tacos, after we received these we immediately stopped ordering out of fear we were going to get food poisoning. Yes, they were that bad. I'm still thinking about how insanely gross they were. It was warm fish in a mini fried tortilla shell; no sauce, no seasoning - just very fishy steamed tuna in a flavorless fried shell. We also ordered the pork dish, but we took a courtesy bite and wrapped up. It's in my fridge, will probably sit there for 2 days before I have the heart to toss the $38 in the trash. Sad since I had wasting food, but I just don't trust it. The one saving grace: the service. Our waiter was genuinely sweet, and whoever handles hiring clearly has an eye for great people. Definitely need reservations. It's a packed place for Friday dinner around 8PM. There's complimentary valet next door, which is confusing but there's neighborhood parking too. Staff are so kind and our server Leo spent time going over all the menu items with us, making us drool as he was describing his favorites and how much to get and how it comes out and how it's prepared. For 4 girls we got the tuna appetizer, 2 fish tacos, 1 wagyu taco, the pescado in crema (black cod was so soft and delicious), the calabeza salad which was flavorful (the dressing was on the bottom, don't forget to swish to get that goodness), and two desserts and 2 drinks each girl. Kinda shows we ate alot but also everything was so flavorful and thought out. My friend did ask if the tuna app was the salad (haha, the crispy fennel hid the tuna pieces). We had the chocoflan and almond torte. We enjoyed the almond torte more because the chocoflan wasn't a deep chocolate flavor but had a nice crunch with the cocoa nibs. The almond torte was perfect with the almond center and hibiscus glaze and added almonds. We were able to sit around for 3 hours and catch up and it was my friend's birthday and they brought out a candle in a spice cake, which is off the menu but absolutely divine. First things first things place is so beautiful. We were seated right at our reservation time, good start. We ordered a tuna tirado app that got lost in the kitchen but we were distracted well enough by the guacamole and salsas at the table. I got the Paloma Spumante to drink. It's the perfect summer drink. Light, bubbly, crisp. We shared the half pescado zarandeado as well as the cochinita pibil. Both very nice the fish was excellent. I had the opportunity to return to Este on a work trip and it did not disappoint. Being able to eat outside in December added to the experience for this Midwesterner for sure. Since the menu is seasonal, we had the opportunity to try a whole lot of new things. The tuna tiradito was a standout. We really appreciated the waiter recommending it - the combo of great fresh tuna and fried shallots was so good. The green beans fresh from the garden with cashews was also stellar. Adding to my best of ATX go to list! First of all, Este is an absolutely adorable location. Next, service is extremely kind and attentive. I was nervous to share that I am vegan, but I was put at ease with a knowledgeable waitress who went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and have options. They have HH a number of times including 12-4 on Sundays, so we had some tasty margaritas for $10 (although they are a bit sweet). The sesame guac is tasty and love their handmade chips & salsas that are complementary. I LOVED my vegan quesadilla. It sounded simple but the mushrooms and tortilla were perfect. We had a great experience overall--delicious food, a vibrant atmosphere, and our server was friendly and attentive, which we really appreciated. However, our interaction with the host (a woman with short red hair) when we first arrived left something to be desired. We didn't have a reservation, so we were told we'd need to wait--completely understandable. We put our names down for the next available table and asked if we could wait for seats at the bar to open up instead. She informed us that the bar was also fully reserved. Again, no problem there. That said, we were clearly trying to find a solution. We asked several questions about where we might be able to sit in the meantime, and it was obvious we were debating whether to stay or go--we were hungry and trying to make it work. Despite this, no other options were offered. While standing outside, we noticed multiple open bar stools on the patio. We went back in to ask if we could sit there, and she said yes. It was frustrating that this wasn't mentioned earlier, especially since we were actively asking about seating options. Offering that as a spot to grab drinks or an appetizer while we waited would have been a simple gesture that could've made the experience feel much more welcoming. I'm biased because I love Seafood, and Este did not disappoint! I got the seafood tower to share with 2 people and it was enough food for a filling meal. The oysters and clams were okay, but the shrimp, lobster, and whitefish salad were DELISH and so good to eat together with the tortillas and tostadas. I got the pastel de elote for dessert and it was yummy but super sweet, I wish the masa flavor could have come through a bit more. Nonetheless - had a great time and service was good too! Wow the food here is incredible. Modern Mexican seafood is definitely up my alley so I was really excited to try this place. On a Friday night this place was busy. Lots of people waiting out the door and wait staff running around. Our food was especially especially slow. The tables next to us definitely got their food before us, so basically I got full off drinking water. Their take on chips and salsa is very trendy. Am a fan. We started with the half dozen oysters. These were so fresh and delightful. Loved the sauces it came with and each slurp was delicious. Also got the trout tostada which was so smokey and fresh and all the different items paired with it was amazing. The skate fish was so tender and fresh and fell off the cartilage. The sauce was very rich and creamy and heavy. Our neighbors who got the same dish had way more brussel sprouts than we did so not a fan of the inconsistency there. While I loved the fish, the sauce really was a bit too creamy and rich. We originally ordered the shrimp as well but after eating the skate fish it ruined the rest of our appetites. A great restaurant if you love seafood! All the dishes we tried were so fresh and they make their own tostadas in house that are amazing. The sauces that come with the tostadas were great - the green enhances flavors that are already there but the orange was a bit spicy, not overpowering but adds a kick. We started with the oysters - yummy! They were fresh but also pretty pricey. The brown sauce reminds me of soy sauce, I think a ponzu would have been amazing. The mignonette and Fresno hot sauce were awesome. Next up was the Este Ceviche. I felt like the fish had quite a fishy aftertaste and I ended adding a drop of the green sauce from the tostadas to each bite. The fish tacos were great! The salsa on top is HOT, I had to scrape off most of the sauce because it was super hot. If I got the tacos again, I would ask for the salsa on the side. I'm in love with their sister restaurant and while Este still doesn't top Suerte for me it was pretty darn good. The ambiance is super cool and the cocktail menu is incredible, mezcal and tequila lovers will not be disappointed. The housemate guac is better than suertes and the giant tortilla chips were a fun sharing dish. The fish tacos were slightly disappointing I felt like they lacked a little flavor but the tortillas were great. We also tried the Turbot - a massive flounder fish (over a pound of fish for the half portion!!) this dish was exceptional and I highly recommend it. This review is long overdue! I've been to Este many times and have had an amazing experience every...single...time. This visit was particularly special--about three weeks ago, my family came to visit from out of state. On their second-to-last night, they wanted to take me out for an early celebration dinner. I made a reservation for Monday night, but when we arrived, they couldn't find my name. That's when I realized I had accidentally booked it for the next day . With a party of five, I thought we'd have to find another spot, but Este made it work and seated us within 10 minutes of walking in. I was super grateful! We started with drinks--spicy margaritas that were fantastic--and some delicious appetizers. We ordered all our entrees together, and three out of five came out promptly. After about 20 minutes, we noticed the other two hadn't arrived. Our server, Mimi, kept checking in and apologizing. Most of us have worked in the service industry, so we were understanding and just happy they got us in. Then, I believe the manager (buzzed hair and glasses--sorry I forgot his name!) came over to personally apologize. He brought out an extra appetizer and took the entrees that were already on the table back to the kitchen so everything could come out hot and together. That gesture meant a lot--especially to my mom . I can't remember what everyone ordered, but the food was amazing--so flavorful. At the end, they even brought out an extra dessert to make up for the wait. They didn't have to do that, but we were thrilled they did . Overall experience: 11/10. The ambiance was perfect, the food was delicious as always, the margaritas were four thumbs up, and the way they took care of us was truly impactful. Mimi was wonderful and gave excellent service. Okay wow much to say about este Firstly, we had a reservation at 7:15 but didn't get seated until after 7:45 due to it being so busy. Then they comp'd our first round of drinks which was so so kind!! As for drinks, their espresso martini was a lil burnt... maybe they just use super dark roast? Just was a bit bitter for my liking but their cosmo and margs were tasty. For starters, their chips and salsas were really good and unique. The tuna tiradito is to DIE for like one of the best things I've ever eaten. Then we had the skate dish to split which I thought was just okay but my friends really enjoyed it. Lastly, the fish tacos are truly some of the best I've ever had. They have a bit of a kick but holy shit they were so so so good. The service was also really great, all very kind and had great suggestions for us. I was super excited to try Este with all the rave reviews, but I was unfort a bit disappointed! My partner and I went during happy hour around 3:30pm on a Sunday, and the patio was quite busy! The patio was actually almost completely full, which I wasn't expecting since it was such an off hour to eat. The restaurant itself is really cute, and the service was nice! I just found the food to be a little underwhelming. They give everyone free chips kind of? Except they're huge pieces and much thicker than typical chips. One of our pieces was really thick and kind of oily/stale in the middle, so didn't love that one but the thinner ones were quite good. They came with two salsas, which were both really good! I particularly enjoyed the orange one (I can't remember what it was made with)! We ordered a half dozen oysters, cevichito, shrimp aguachile, and the fish tacos. I liked the mignonette and other sauces they had with the oysters, and they were $1 off each for happy hour. The cevichito and aguachile were both okay. I couldn't really taste the fish in the ceviche, and the aguachile good but not great. My favorite was the fish tacos, which were made with swordfish. The fish was soft even though it was swordfish, and I liked the salsa they put on top! We added the orange salsa that came with the chips, and that made it even better. This was one of the best dining experiences we've had to date, it was perfect! The food is absolutely outstanding. They start you off with their version of salsa and chips to wake up the taste buds. From there we had the clams and tuna taridito. The Taridito is truly unique and it left me wanting more. For our main course we had the steak that was perfectly prepared with a delicious chipotle sauce and the pescado that you could make into your own fish tacos. Amazing! The corn cake with brown butter cream might just be the best dessert ever! Our server was outstanding! We were there for our anniversary and he brought us complimentary bubbly for a toast. The ambiance is stunning and unique. The staff is clearly highly capable and experienced. I learned of this place through a happy hour app so naturally, I came for the happy hour - which thank you for having a weekend happy hour!! I took my mom. I learned once I got there that all their warm food is made in sunflower and unfortunately I am allergic so that left me with the raw bar which I'm perfectly happy with. I asked for the shellfish/seafood tower and if I could swap the fish pate that came with it for more clams and was persuaded by the server to steer toward ordering a la carte. Not mad at her recommendation I believe she had my best interest in mind. The sadness came when my dozen clams and dozen oysters came. The clams were very tasty but imagine a small cherrystone clam shell with about 1 cm worth of chopped up clam meat on it. Yeah, I'm talking minuscule and all scrambled. The dozen clams were $42. It was painful. I only ordered the oysters on the half shell because they were East Coast but unfortunately, they were so past prime I couldn't finish the last two. Didn't want to make a fuss - mostly commenting here so you know the raw shellfish is overpriced and risky. I think the other thing that threw me off is that the server kept referring to my mother as they/them. I appreciate inclusivity and normalizing the removal of assumption so this is hard to talk about. I do feel this was a real part of my experience too. I said she was my mom and referred to her as a woman several times and it was uncomfortable for me and weird. She's in her 70s. It made me wonder if the server was also referring to the traditional presenting, all American, boomer generation couples/guys in cowboy hats near us that way as well. Make a reservation in advance to guarantee seating, reservations are posted online up to 30 days in advance. If you don't have a reservation, you can still pop over! If they have a wait, you can walk over to Bar Toti for a drink while you wait. Este always has friendly, knowledgeable and attentive service Abs have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. 4.5 Our first time at Este was good! Chef Nuños brings together traditions, culture, flavors and creativity of all the dishes so well. The service was good (albeit there were a couple periods of idle times in between courses), but ambiance was nice. We came for dinner and ordered the Este Ceviche, fried fish tacos, Bavette steak, and Pescado Zarandeado. Ceviche was good as expected, battered fish in the tacos were freshly fried, so light and fluffy. Steak was okay. Pescado Zarandeado was special. Overall, we were happy with the food and look forward to coming back to try other things on the menu, but will certainly reorder the fish tacos. However, I was not a fan of the food and drinks. I ordered the following: - Mussels al piquillo: 2/5 This dish was extremely acidic, to the point where my partner's tongue was raw before he finished the meal. - Grilled steak au poivre: 2/5 The steak was cooked to my liking (medium rare), but the flavor was not there. The sauce didn't add much and it was just bland. I liked the texture of the potatoes, but again, there was not much flavor. - Mint limonada: 1/5 This drink was so sour and bitter, it hurt to drink, and it was 70% ice. I'd order this again as an appetizer to share. The tostadas were large and crunchy as you would want them. One of my friends ordered the maíz cake dessert and it was so different, but in a good way! Este offered delicious Mexican cuisine with a specialization in seafood! We started our meal by ordering the Este Ceviche, and I can see why it's so popular. The tai snapper was extremely fresh and tender and every bite provided a limey and creamy (cause of the avocado) touch. This complimented very well with the complimentary face-sized chips provided by the restaurant! As for our entree, we decided to share the Cochinita Pibil so that we could build our own tacos. The protein is a slow cooked pork wrapped around a bamboo leaf and was easy to shred apart for your tacos. We also shared a side of the Papas a La Parrilla and enjoyed the combined chimichurri and garlic aioli sauce. Overall, I loved the homey and warm vibes of this restaurant (you literally walk into a big house) and it's a versatile setting for any type of occasion!
