Our party of 5 enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Estelle. My entree was the pan seared rainbow trout with oyster mushrooms, white bean salad, romesco & champagne gastric. Perfect, quaint place in St Paul for a girls dinner. I didn't realize I had accidentally made the reservation for the chef's counter but we ended up loving it as we watched them prepare dishes and even got a complimentary treat just because we were siting at the counter. I love this place! Such a somewhat hidden gem in the MacGroveland neighborhood. I will admit I always eat in the bar area because I find it cozier. A friend and I shared tapas- the Bacalao and Halloumi . Both excellent. The cocktail menu has something for everyone as well. If I lived in this part of St. Paul, Estelle would 100% be my fun go to date or girl's night out spot. It's intimate, but not so small that you might not be able to get a walk in spot -- still, I recommend reservations. We started with the Shrimp Al Ajillo. 100% order this. It was a great sharing portion. I believe we each had four shrimp. The sauce was super yummy. I would get this again in a heartbeat. For our entrees, we split two pastas: the Rigatoni (a WINNER) and the Mezzaluna (sadly just way too salty). Both were very generous portions. For dessert, we had the Pasteis De Nata (the best one I've had in the states, but still not like the ones I had in Lisbon), the Star Bar Ice Cream (if you like toffee this is an absolute must), and two little complimentary churros that were really yummy. But the real star of the show to me was the cocktails! We absolutely loved the Photo Finish (grapefruit foam?? are you kidding me!) and Cold in the Summa Time (the perfect tropical mezcal drink). RESTAURANT WEEK Great food and great service at Estelle's in St Paul! We went out for restaurant week, so we got the three course prix fix menu. Great ambiance. Decor was tasteful and the restaurant definitely busy, but not overcrowded. FIRST COURSE I started off with their "return of the Mac old fashioned" to drink- which was delicious (not too sweet, very smooth)- and for the first course I tried the bacalao salt cod appetizer. Now, normally I do not like fish or sea food, but I was feeling adventurous. Our server also assured me that it wasn't fishy at all, and she was right! The salt cod bites were super creamy and tasted like a salty mash potato bite almost? I'd order again! A friend also offered to split her first course with me in case I didn't like the fish, so I got to try the salad too. That raspberry yogurt salad... YUM!! I could eat it every day. Perfect balance of crunch, spice, fruit, tangy... just everything about it was great. SECOND COURSE For the second course, I again split with another person so I could try two things. We got the Radiatore and the Fideua. I had some reservations about the Fideua because the photos I had seen online showed oysters in them (and I don't like sea food), but this one was a pork version and it was delicious! Smokey and flavorful meat with small noodles in a creamy sauce. The radiatore was good too, but if I went back I wouldn't order it again. It was a little one note with its flavor, and the jalapeño didn't come through as much as I had hoped. Still good, but the Fideua just knocked it out of the park. To drink, I got a martini iberico. It was subtly floral but not too overpowering. THIRD COURSE For dessert, they are known for their star bar... and if I could do it over again I probably would have just ordered that! (3 out of 4 of us at our table did, and the star bar didn't disappoint!) but, feeling adventurous, I went with the Rhubarb hibiscus cake.... It was not good. Very minty cake with a hibiscus icing on top. That by itself was a little interesting in terms of flavor, but not that bad. When topped with the rhubarb compote though... it was NOT good. The sour rhubarb paired with the fresh mint did not go together. Don't get this cake. Get the star bar instead! We also got free mini chocolate churros with our meal! It really saved the day for this third course. Paired dessert with a nice glass of Chianti. All in all, had a great time and would definitely return!! SKIP: Return of the Mac Old Fashioned (unless you love the standard one), Radiatore, and Rhubarb Hibiscus Cake. -- Full review: We decided to try this place for restaurant week and it fully delivered! The restaurant has a wonderful vibe to it. Loved the open kitchen and the music they had playing. The music could get loud at times, but not so loud that we couldn't carry a conversation. It was a little too dim lighting-wise where we sat, but not terrible. Our server was amazing. She was friendly, fast, attentive, and incredibly helpful. We had a ton of questions about the menu and drinks and she answered every one of them. I had the Return of the Mac Old Fashioned and the White Sangria for drinks. The Old Fashioned was very standard. Nothing exciting or different about it. The White Sangria, however, was AMAZING. It was so light and refreshing--truly the perfect summer drink! I really loved how the cocktail menu showed what glass each drink came in. My first course was the Raspberry Yogurt Salad, which, truthfully, was my favorite dish of the night! It was light, fluffy, refreshing, yet really filling! The pickled onions and cornflakes added wonderful taste and texture to the salad. If you got a bite that had a jalapeño, pickled onion, raspberry, yogurt, cornflakes, and some kale on it, it was AMAZING. You HAVE to get this if you go. For the second course, I split the Radiatore and Fideua with another person in our group because both sounded amazing and I wanted to try both! The Radiatore was good, yet still a let down. It wasn't pesto-y at all, but instead very spinach-y. It also had no spice whatsoever to it, which threw me off because it's noted that it's a jalapeño pesto sauce. The Fideua, however, was SO delicious! It was wonderfully balanced and I loved the touch of freshness the tomatoes brought to the dish. The braised pork was moist and tender and I was able to easily pull it apart and mix it with the other ingredients. NOTE: They no longer serve this with any kind of seafood on top. For the third course I ordered the Star Bar, but also tried the Rhubarb Hibiscus Cake and the Churros. The Star Bar was absolutely delicious. It's basically just a Snickers/Milky Way with salt on top. I don't normally like salted sweets, but it was so light I actually enjoyed it! The Churros were also really good--definitely get those! Finally... the Rhubarb Hibiscus Cake... Not to be rude, but it was... gross. I couldn't stomach even the small bite I had. It had a really prominent dirt taste to it. Love the open kitchen/chef's table set up. It is a counter set up for about 12 people to be able to watch food get prepared and made. Reservations for the counter is a MUST. The chef and worker are really friendly, talks & interacts with you. The servers are amazing and tell you anything you need to know about the menu. This dish??? Blew me away. There was absolutely no gamey-ness whatsoever. Caesar and Chef both explained the lamb is prepped & cooked for 3 day! This is sooo worth ordering. We added some of the ragu to my rigatoni and it was absolutely mouth watering. Every bite was an eye closing, savoring moment! We were comp'd the churros and their tres leche slice. Churros were so crispy with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar. The chocolate sauce was a nice compliment! We ate the tres leche cake the next night and oh boy! It was melt in your mouth goodness. Cake was soaked just the right amount and wasn't soggy at all. This restaurant is a gastronomical experience. It is by far one of the best restaurants I've eaten at when away from California! Went here for date night, on a Saturday so it was pretty busy. The wine was very nice, and the house Pilsner was also good. We ordered the bacola (? I think that's how you spell it) , which are potato and cod fritters with this amazing habenero tartar sauce. Those were awesome! For our mains, we got the burger and rigatoni. I was expecting a lot from the rigatoni, based on all the reviews. But it was really just okay. It was very soupy, like weirdly soupy, so I wonder if I maybe just got a bad batch? The flavors were good, but all the sauce was just dripping off and it was really just mediocre. The sausage was very good though to make up for it. The burger was pretty good, but it's hard to mess up a burger, and for the price of 22 dollars, not really worth it. They did give us some churros complimentary, which was a really nice touch. Open kitchen where you can have a seat at the bar and watch the chefs cook while you dine. If you have a larger group absolutely make a reservation, mostly to help the staff accommodate and prepare because while the space is gorgeous, definitely a great intimate experience. We ordered the Bacalao and Gazpacho Verde for apps and my lort, get them both. Bacalao was light and fluffy and was served with a fresh tartar sauce. The gazpacho was heavenly, so refreshing and hydrating - not a typical gazpacho and I believe the base is cucumber. And we split the burger (which was what we came in for on our search for the best burger in MSP) and this beautiful masterpiece did NOT dissappoint. Delicious and juicy, well balanced with all of the flavors (juicy beef, char-broiled tomatoes, a special animal sauce and bacon). We visited Estelle to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary at the end of January, and we were absolutely blown away by the beautiful atmosphere, impeccable service between service-staff and kitchen staff, and the food. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. EVERYONE WAS KIND. EVERYONE WAS HAVING FUN. We ordered Patatas Bravas, Pica Pau, the Radiatore, Piri Piri chicken, the custard egg tart and the honey cake. The Patatas Bravas were beautifully crispy yet tender, and the sauce was one of my favorites of the evening. The Pica Pau delivered tender beef and vegetables that could have been a meal by itself. The Radiatore with pesto cream sauce was out of this world - I brought some home and it was just as beautiful as the portion I ate there. My spouse raved about the Piri Piri chicken having flavor complexity plus heat, and said it was a perfectly made dish. The desserts were heavenly, my favorite being the honey cake but the egg custard tart has such beautiful depth of flavor and a beautiful texture - not overcooked omelet, not runny pudding, happily in the middle with a crunch-satisfying pastry shell. The staff were so kind in celebrating us and taking note that we were NA visitors, they went above and beyond to make the night special. Almost everything was, unfortunately, way too salty, ranging from the tapas to the rigatoni, which was the only main course my friends and I have ordered. I was hoping to have an experience that reflected majority of the reviews but unfortunately I wasn't able to receive such just based on the food taste alone. I must say that the service was amazing and the atmosphere was everything I could ask for when I wanted to have a good time with my friends. My constructive feedback is related to food only. The chicken liver mousse had a nice mixture of flavors combining sweet and savory tastes into one when I started spreading the pepper jelly, the mousse, and the mustard on top of the focaccia, which tasted very nice. That was probably my favorite dish out of everything I had tasted. For the bacalao, I could not tell that it was salt cod in the potato fritters mixture. When dipping it into the tartar sauce, I could not tell that this was a form of tapas and I wasn't sure if the sauce elevated the flavor or moved the flavor to a more "typical" direction of just "fish and tartar sauce" which to me is one of the most basic ways of eating fish products. I think changing a sauce might be able to showcase the bacalao's unique identity, or even consider changing the way it's cooked without deep frying. The shrimp was overcooked and too salty in the shrimp al ajillo tapas, and even the garlic butter sauce couldn't neutralize the salty taste. But together with the baguette it became a little bit better. I think reducing the salt level would help, along with being more vigilant on how the shrimp tail got easily overcooked while the rest of the shrimp was more or less okay. The rigatoni was also very salty, and the flavors from different ingredients, ranging from the fennel sausage to the roasted red pepper, didn't completely mesh with the pasta's flavor profile. One bite of a piece of rigatoni, one would still get the pasta and cheese flavor without much flavor from the other ingredients. The pasta was freshly made and the basil on top was surely a nice touch, though. Overall I would highly recommend decreasing the salt level on everything as there was a lot of it. The pasteis de nata was pretty good. However, honestly it tasted more like a tiny piece of sweet potato pie, as the egg mixture in the egg tart really lost its egg taste and had a good amount of sweet potato taste. It could be the cinnamon that did the work. The churros were pretty good, and tasted like the standard churros I have had everywhere else. While I am definitely that happy that other customers enjoy the food from Estelle, I found it underwhelming, unfortunately, and I felt like maybe ordering more dishes from the plates section would help, but since it is so hard to find a place in the Twin Cities that had emphasis on Spanish and Portuguese flavors, I would love to see more of that incorporated rather than Italian, or American like a cheeseburger. With all that said, I will still say that this is a solid place for a date night due to service and atmosphere! It is also located in a very nice and cozy neighborhood. read more

Cute, eclectic decor with great drink & food menu. Server was very knowledgeable about both food & drink. I am GF & he knew which tapas & entrees were OK. Did not recommend the most expensive items but made great pairing recommendations. They do automatically add 20% service chg which they say is not a tip but for back-of-house.
