Ethyl & Tank is owned and operated by the same folks who run The Crest, but if the Crest is a Clintonville hipster with a hybrid vehicle and a good job as a graphic designer, E&T is its younger sibling, the one in its sixth year of college who sleeps on a futon in its best friend's apartment and changes majors every year. There's some family resemblance in the menu items, but the vibe is totally different. From the retro neon-diner signage to the main floor arrangement - centered around standing-room drinking and not seated dining (there are virtually no tables large enough to comfortably sit more than a couple of people for a meal), Ethyl & Tank is a place to go for some brews. The beer selection is pretty good, featuring a fair amount of locals (Seventh Son is on the menu). The menu is a mix of salads, sandwiches and $2 tacos in a variety of flavors. I have to say, it's one of the best happy hour specials ever - it goes until a whopping 9:00 pm with half-price drinks across the board. I had a beer and two tacos and my bill was $8. The food was good, the beer was good, but for grownups who want to go out for food with alcohol on the side, not go out for alcohol with some food tossed in to help soak it up, it might not be your first choice. To the point: I'm somewhat disappointed with this first visit to E&T. We were the only ladies in the joint around lunch time. Granted, OSU is still on winter break, thus the student foot and car traffic is utterly nonexistent. Explains why we were the only customers eating (two other customers came in not too long before we left). The decor is, I feel, not exactly 100% true to Yelp's pics: the photos seem brighter, bubbly, more "alive" than what gave the feel of a bit "has been" today. Again, maybe the student life changes the atmosphere 180 degrees. The food was ok. Nothing to brag home about. I had a Veggie Taco and Pulled Chicken Taco. Too much sour cream. The tortillas weren't bad. But I don't have anything to expound on. Had a bite of their Bison Burger, and it was quite dry. Needs more seasoning. Probably the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. There was no hostess, no servers and no management to attend the customers. We waited 25 minutes to have our table cleaned and 55 minutes to be greeted by a server. 1:15 rolls around, we finally get our orders in and 25 minutes later she comes back to tell us they are no longer serving brunch. Even though the website and staff all stated 2pm. Three other tables in our situation all left at the same time without even an apology or explanation to give. It's not that I was not patient, it's not that I wasn't friendly...the staff, management and kitchen did not seem to have any respect or care for the customers that wanted to dine there. My dear, dear Ethyl & Tank. Many a drink has been thrown back and this new(-ish) addition to the campus bars. And this place definitely has its perks. 1. Happy Hour; out of control. Half off all drinks 'til 9??? That's wild and you know it. 2. Coffee. I am the first person to admit I have a coffee problem (I'm not whole without it) and there's a bar...with a separate coffee bar inside where you can even get them with spirits? I mean...come on. The drawbacks? The food never really looks that great and it's a bar...so you're not really going to get the best opportunity for conversation. That being said...they have killer nachos. And of course, you're probably not going to be set to have the most spirited conversation in a hopping campus bar on a weekend evening. I really enjoyed Ethyl & Tank. (I didn't eat there so can't attest to the food, though.) The space is really cute, and I was perfectly comfortable (?? it isn't dirty and doesn't lack "creature comforts"... I'm .. . . I'm not sure what that person was expecting out of a bar but it's pretty similar to many many other bars I've been to on a comfort level). What I loved: -- above adequate service. Our bartender was friendly and helpful.. the other bartender was a bit weird when he came to collect our bartender's tips (we wanted to make sure SHE got them), but whatever. The service wasn't magical enough to gush over but it was good. -- The touches of vintage decor/vibe. Not kitschy, just enough to be cool. -- Decent beer selection that would really appeal to everyone, whether you drink craft beer or Bud. They also had local spirits from Middle West and Watershed. -- It was larger than I expected on the inside! And they have a nice patio for the location. I didn't give it 5 stars because I didn't eat so I can't speak to that whole part of the business and because of the location. Love the setup in an abandoned warehouse feel. They have a huge selection of beers on tap including my favorite Steigl Raddler at a price that doesnt break your wallet. TV's are everywhere so you wont miss any part of the game anywhere in the place. I really liked this place with the exception of lack of AC but being from the south you dont really need it in Columbus anyways. This place was perfect for pre-gaming before the buckeye country fest this year! We went during happy hour which means 25% off their version of fishbowls! I had 2, the Zelda-deliciousness and the root beer flavored-even more deliciousness!!! We sat on the patio area and enjoyed some grub as well. The Asian zing style wings looked so good & you must try the ranch waffle fries or loaded tots! Heads up: the women's restroom isn't marked, but it's right beside the men's-lol. I finally decided to write a review after going here multiple times during varying hours. I'll start with the morning. The coffee is probably some of the best coffee I've had. They have amazing brews, and they tend to change their brews pretty frequently. As for their espresso I haven't had it so I can't say much. The morning staff is usually pretty friendly and most of them seem to actually have a great interest in coffee. I can't really think of any negative for the morning time. Brunch is a different story. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and didn't check up on us much even though it wasn't crowded at all. After waiting about 40 minutes for the food, we were a bit disappointed. I ordered a breakfast burger, which is just a burger with an over easy egg on it. It really wasn't anything special, especially for how long it took. My friend ordered their chicken and waffle sandwich which was impossible to eat like a sandwich (syrup was everywhere on it) and the waffle wasn't even made from scratch. I don't think the chicken was either. Altogether the food wasn't bad, but it seemed to lack a variety that I'm used to for brunch places. As for their dinner/happy hour I don't have a whole lot to say, it's basically a normal restaurant when it comes to that. You won't be disappointed by their food, service, or alcohol, but you probably won't be overly amazed either. I will say that their music is pretty good though. As for the bar scene, it's pretty good if you can find a seat. It's pretty hard to get through the crowed at times though due to the spacing of tables and how crowded it is, but their selection and prices are fair. I tried their 'house brew' which was called tank water I believe (probably could have chosen a better name). It tasted like your typical light beer, and costs about the same. The patio is nice, especially during the summer and all my friends keep talking about how great their music is (usually popular indie/alternative). I gave it three stars mainly because of their morning and late night services. Other than that it's nothing too different than a typical restaurant. Yum! Wait until you see my pictures and you will realize why you need to come check this place out! We came on a Saturday morning and it was surprisingly empty. It did make sense later when I realized that school was out for the summer sessions. The breakfast menu is pretty simple and succinct. We decided on the breakfast tacos and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles sandwich. The food was delicious and cheap for the amount you receive on your plate! I killed my sandwich which was topped with melted American cheese, drizzled with Maple Syrup, and stuffed with crispy bacon and fried chicken. I doused it with the housemade hot sauce because the sandwich got a little dry after a while. This was delicious and my friend enjoyed her tacos. Service was fantastic - very helpful and cheerful. Terrible service, terrible food. I really wouldn't recommend this bar. I went there with some friends earlier this week, and it took a good twenty minutes before anyone even acknowledged our presence. Even then, it was only because I had to get up and hunt down a waitress. After placing our orders, the service still wasn't consistent. We resorted to flagging down any waiter/waitress that walked by in order to get attention. The food and drinks were even worse. The happy hour prices are great, but you get what you pay for. I ordered a Stella Cidre, and it was flat. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she insisted that I must not know what cider is supposed to taste like. The food was sub-par. Extremely tasteless and unimpressive. I can name ten other places in Columbus with better food at happy hour prices. Overall just not a great experience. Take your business somewhere else. read more

This place is pretty cool for having a few drinks on the weekends. It gets pretty packed with the typical college-age student on the weekends and for game days (which is expected). Me and my boyfriend ate here for breakfast and it was good but not spectacular. I head heard that their breakfast items were good, so we decided to give them a try. The breakfast list was really unique which was cool but lacked the normal breakfast items from what I remember. They had a blood Mary bar that was something cheap like $6-8 where you could go and actually put your own toppings on it. I remember being really disappointed with this because 1. Most of the toppings/flavors were gone and clearly were not going to be refilled any time soon. 2. I legitimately could not taste any vodka in the mix and did not even get the slightest buzz. I mean I get it, it's a cheap college bar but I was like expected more based off of the buzz I heard about the breakfast. Ethyl and Tank is the kind of place that would never have flown on South Campus...back when South Campus was more empty storefronts/bars ...wait...okay, nevermind. Let's return to the here and now. This place is super cool. Two levels of seating, with rooms of video games and long tables - perfect for hanging out with friends. We saw at least one couple who appeared to be on a new/first date - a great place to bring someone. It's big (the main floor goes floor to ceiling; the second level runs the perimeter) but not loud. Lots of room and seating, things to do, plenty of drink variety and seriously good eats at a reasonable price. Okay, not college-reasonable, but it's definitely not going to break the bank to take a date here and pay for the two of you. Waffle fries with spicy seasoning. Salads, sandwiches, tacos, wings, big entrees like chicken and waffles and chicken fried steak - you can find something to suit your fancy, even if you're vegetarian. So we had delicious spicy waffle fries, hot and crispy. a catfish Po'boy (this wins all the awards - fresh fish!), and the Columbus Club. All very good, hot and fresh...anyplace that will serve fresh fish on a sandwich earns their extra star with me! Unlike some of the other reviews, we were able to go in, find a seat and get friendly and fast service right away. DAY: Came here on a Sunday for Brunch. Ordered a French pressed Vanilla Latte and the Orange Blossom French Toast with a side of Jameson Syrup. As a coffee enthusiast, The french pressed vanilla latte was decent. It's really hard to mess up a Vanilla latte BUT, presentation could have been better. I so wanted to instagram the latte but frankly, I got a frothy coffee with no latte art. So, I just sipped it instead. As for the french toast... EH, $7.50 for 4 pieces of sugary toast is kind of pricey. I could taste the Jamie in the syrup so that was pretty cool, not so much the "Orange Blossom" on the toast but oh well. NIGHT: Can't speak much on the night life here. My friend and I stopped by and it was packed. Couldn't get service at the bar for the longest time -- so we just left. SIDENOTE: it was a cool place to have brunch and hang out. The atmosphere is a little weird though. They've got plenty of tvs with games on (frat vibe), multi-use tables for standing/seating & cool decor (hipster) , games ( appeal to the young), old school/soft rock playing (appeal to the old). Wowser- I loved this place. Disclaimer- I am a lady well into her 30's and my hubby is knocking of door of 50 and this is certainly a college kid hangout- at least when school is in session. We were ok with that. We went late Sunday morning to try out the build your own Bloody Mary bar. You get a glass with your choice of vodka (plain, pepper, or cilantro infused) and their incredible homemade Bloody Mary mix. Then have a ball adding fixings. They have everything- from picked vegetables to the usual pickles, celery, olives, to hot sauces and spices. I came on a Thursday at lunch during the semester- it was a ghost town. Which I love. The wait staff was pretty slow, marginally bad. I got the Mexican tater tots (very good!!!), but what really blew this place out of the water and makes me really want to give them 5 stars.... THE COD TACO!!!! Get it! So this place is pretty cool. My friends and I pregamed here before a Crew playoff game and I was pleasantly surprised by the food and beer selection since this really is a campus bar. Also, they had a BOMB happy hour deal on a Sunday (what?!) before the game. I ordered some of their Southwestern tots with chili, cheese, etc and they were delicious. A lot of food for around $7 which was awesome. I did find out that the owners of The Crest also own this place so of course I had their hot sauce. Since it was happy hour, I ordered a couple Jameson and Gingers and I believe they were only around $3 each! It was like half off everything! Anyway, as far as decor, it's kind of industrial and they have some cool features like neon signs and an ARCADE upstairs. It's about as clean as you would expect a campus bar to be. Since I wrote my last review I've been here maybe 3 times. Each time, was just disappointing. They got rid of half the items that we enjoyed, the food it self had been pretty lackluster, and the service had consistently gotten been bad after our first few visits. My girlfriend had ordered some of their tacos to try and the meat was just super dry. On the menu it said it was one price (don't remember what) and it was really a dollar more. She normally got one of their sandwiches but we were surprised to see half of that selection was gone. The service had gotten bad. We would wait at least 10-15 minutes just for somebody to even greet us at our table and take our orders. We never went when it was super busy so we didn't understand why the long wait. The only things that stayed consistent here were the drinks. They have a decent selection but in Columbus that's nothing special with all the great bars in the area. read more

By far the best bar on campus, any day of the week. You get drink service faster than any where else and they have the best selection of beers outside of Chumley's. Any coffee drink is pretty good and all the bartenders can make you something new at request. Anyone who says food is bad must have been there on an off day. I've had probably half the menu and nothing has fallen below expectations. Wings, burgers, apps, and brown bags are the best they have. They also make their own hot sauce which is AMAZING! Happy hour from 3-9 with half off all drinks is better than anywhere else as well. Service you just have to flag down a server as there aren't designated sections. It's a very hipster/modern bar so it purposefully only has the bare essentials as that's it's style. Brunch is dope too. read more

Wow, where to start? My waitress looked like she was strung out on heroin and was noticeably absent for the entire meal. On a slow Saturday morning, It took over a half hour to get the first Bloody Mary I ordered. Only way I could get a drink is if I personally went up to the empty bar. Orders were brought out wrong. Food was okay after the correction. Checks were added up wrong at the end. Replacement waiter was a psychopath who freaked out when we told him he gave us seltzer water instead of tap water; "Is seltzer water not good enough for you??". I'm never a demanding customer in a restaurant, this was just a terrible experience. People shouldn't be harassed by staff for requesting basic things. This place was much better when it was vacant and boarded up for the previous 3 years. Oh, and the Bloody Mary's sucked too. read more

Someone needs to learn how to layer their nachos. By that I mean the people in the kitchen at Ethyl need to learn how to layer their nachos. Come when it's not crowded and you'll have a good time but if you come when it's crowded you won't get a drink in a timely manner, which is a bummer I'd say. Cool crowd hangs out here and by that I mean my friends. I'd recommend but just steer clear of the nachos unless you like to eat loaded nachos and then suddenly plain tortilla chips. read more

After reading the previous reviews I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, but since this was a brunch get together I decided to give it a try. It is definitely a college eatery. The menu consists of two small pages printed on a foldable. I asked about the chicken and waffles and was told the tenders were chicken used for brunch and the bone in was for lunch/dinner. So I decided on the egg, sausage, and hash. I also ordered coffee and to my surprise they were out of creamer.. The coffee was bitter as well and since I received no stir utensil I ordered the $3 Mimosa. It tasted like watered down orange juice. So i just drank water. The meal was a baby food texture with no distinct taste. Toast came with no butter, because you guessed it, they were out of butter and to go downstairs to get more?? Fortunately I did not waste a lot of money because their prices were reasonable. read more

Heard a lot about this place so gave it a shot. I went expecting a big brunch crowd at 10 on a Sunday. Place was nearly empty. I think this probably draws more of a bar crowd which is fine by me. We decided to sit at the bar as some of tables were uncomfortable (not a lot of eating space, bar stool height/table height ratio) Good choice as the server/bartender was pretty great. Didn't catch his name but long blonde hair and super friendly/helpful/customer service oriented. They've got a gem in this one. And actually every person we made contact with were friendly, professional, helpful, fun. I started with a virgin bloody Mary as I didn't want to start my day off with a buzz (hey I'm finally growing up.) The bloody Mary bar was pretty basic with lots of good BM mixes. Would have liked a cheese option (blue cheese stuffed olives?) To their credit they fairly charged me only 2 bucks since mine was virgin. With vodka it's a still reasonable 5 bucks. Food: My friend and I both ordered the chorizo breakfast burrito. First time it came they were both cold. The bartender handled the situation perfectly and got us two new, fresh burritos really quickly. This time they were hot...but the burrito itself was rather underwhelming. No real sign of chorizo. It's smothered with their bloody mary mix but I think the chorizo sausage gravy would have taken this dish up the much needed notch. The rest of their menu looks good and the happy hour is supposed to be really great and inexpensive. Their prices as it stands are reasonable for sure. Last night was my first time trying out Ethyl & Tank. I have been wanting to see what it was all about and the Earth Day event gave me the perfect opportunity! I wasn't sure about a gastropub on OSU campus but I've heard great things about their brunch and extended beer selection. I was definitely impressed! It had the hipster vibe but also lots of TVs for sports watching. Although we didn't eat here, the menu looked great! The beers we sampled were top notch and the service was great! We were lucky enough to get seats at the bar, otherwise we would've spent the night standing along one of the walls. It was pretty crowded but some additional seating would have been nice. The patio will definitely come in handy on warmer days because the bar was pretty busy for a Wednesday night. I had a great experience and look forward to going back again soon to experience brunch!! read more

I haven't had a worse dining experience in 10+ years. I brought a group of out-of-town friends here to experience good fare before their first OSU game. We showed up at 830A to secure a table and get food orders in quickly (naturally, things will be a bit slower on game day). By 1030A, we still hadn't received coffee, countless drinks, or our food. Trying to tame the restless crowd, I walked down to Starbucks to grab coffees for the group. The bouncer, flexing his little-man's-syndrome, wouldn't allow us in with coffee. The waitress quickly came out to explain to him how long we had been waiting and asked that he let us in with the coffee (which the restaurant had apparently run out). He said no. I asked for a manager. He said, sure, if he comes around. He then proceeded to not allow me back into the restaurant. Long story short, food showed up after 2.5 hours, cold and hard. Coffees never showed up. Nothing was taken off of the bill. It was ridiculous. I will never return and will make sure that everyone knows how they treat their customers. read more

My husband and I stopped by before a concert at Newport and was pleasantly surprised by the half off all drinks happy hour! I'm a super fan of Watershed Gin and with a little tonic it was $2.75/$3 per drink! With my husband's beer we spent $6! Can't beat that! I stopped for lunch a few days later with work friends and got the bison burger, it was really good. Came with guac and nacho cheese and a good amount of fries. The cuban looked great and the mac and cheese. Can't wait to bring our other foodie friends for the happy hour and to try the tacos! read more
