Warm and friendly welcome and service, we really enjoyed the etouffe and gumbo ya-ya preceded by shared fried green tomatoes (5 in an order) that were beautifully crusted with a mildly spicy cheese dipping spread. The fresh crusty rolls were addictive. The martinis were generous and potent. We sat on the nicely arranged patio and enjoyed their light jazz recorded music. For starters, you are required to scan the qr code for the menu. I know that that is acceptable, but, many people cannot access that through their phones, or simply want a real menu. We were then asked if we wanted order food before the kitchen closed...um...we made a dinner reservation...We ordered and then I was told they were out of chicken, but were giving me $1.00 off my alternate dinner (how generous for Calistoga). We came here for dinner and were really happy with the food. I tried: - Fried pickles (4/5). A doughier batter that actually stayed on the pickle and went really well with the sauce. - Burger (5/5). When the bartender didn't ask me for the temperature I'd like, I was concerned that it'd be just mediocre. But in fact the burger was amazing. The bacon onion compote mixed with the sauce and cheese, along with the well seasoned meat, made for one of the most flavorful burgers I've ever had. FIVE STARS IF..... The service matched their menu! My family and I have dined at Evangeline on several occasions as we live here in the Napa Valley. Without fail, we have been delighted with all the culinary offerings. Friday night was a favorite with the crowd-pleasing pre-ordered fried chicken set menu. The butternut squash soup was divine and the creme brulee was perfect. However, the most recent 3 out of 4 visits to Evangeline have always been the dampened with poor service. We sat for 15 minutes before we decided to stop a passing waitress and ask if she could open the bottle of wine that we had brought. The staff member rather flatly informed us that she could not open our wine because she was not our server, gave a disgruntled sigh and said she would inquire about our server. Eventually, someone did return to our table and introduced himself as our server. As our wine was being opened we were advised of the additional dishes that were also available to our pre-order. We thought that the fried chicken and the three sides seemed like plentiful for us both for dinner so we declined to add to our order. Our server seemed a bit annoyed that we decide to maintain our original order. He poured our wine and left the table. For the duration of our meal, we never saw the server again, however, our water glasses were well attended to and the sure star of the evening of the night was the server who cleared our plates, returned with our desserts, kindly asked if we wanted to have our unfinished dinner prepared to take away, and inquired in the end if we had enjoyed our meal. We thanked him profusely when we left, but I should have taken his name. He had sandy blonde hair, a man bun and black earrings and we could easily identify him. He was attentive and showed that he took pride in his job, far surpassing his colleagues that evening. As they say, there are no small roles only small actors. Whenever there is an event in Calistoga that involves the local restaurants I am always eager to see the menus featured, especially that of Evangeline and look forward to participating. However, the consistent sub par performance of the majority of the waitstaff gives me pause. I so hope that this note is taken worthwhile to management. read more

This place wasn't on my radar but a friend and I stumbled across it during our last jaunt to Calistoga -- because let's be real, I'm never going to turn down Cajun food. What a gem! Our server was friendly, prompt and professional. The atmosphere was lovely and charming; we sat in the outdoor patio and were comfortable with the overhead heater on. The lighting was nice; bright and atmospheric without being glaring (I get migraines so that matters to me!). We split cheese grits, a shrimp dish and an exquisite vanilla creme brûlée. Kind people, good service, and a beautiful courtyard. The food was just mostly meh relative to the pricing and the expectations for Napa. The lamb shank entree, oyster appetizer, and hibiscus passion cocktail were the standouts. Those were great. The sazerac was limp, the heirloom tomato appetizer looked sad, the fried pickles were soft, the shrimp etoufee lacked real creole flavor, the apple tart was soggy, and the panna cotta was just kind of there. We dined at Lovina next and were really impressed by that placed. We spent nearly $300 for two people at Evangeline and walked away wondering what just happened. If you're looking for a finer dining experience this ain't it. If you're rich and the bill doesn't matter and you like lamb shank have at it. read more

My wife and I have eaten at Evangeline once before with another couple. It was mid January and Calistoga was a wee bit quieter than on the Saturday before the 4th of July. I remember liking the food, the ambiance, and service. Still I hadn't intended on picking it again. This weekend we decided to try nothing but new joints. And that wasn't going to be hard in Calistoga or neighboring Saint Helena. So it was my mistaking Evangeline for another restaurant in town that brought us back. The experience made us question if this was actually the same restaurant as we'd eaten at before. Pros: * Lovely out door seating * A full bar * Menu with lots of awesome-looking looking bistro fare including tasty French fries. * Michelin rated Cons: * A host that looked stressed because his best players were either sick or on vacation. * Server confusion. Was it him, him, or her? * No overview of menu additions for the evening. * Poorly executed that was either lacking flavor or tasted under-cooked. What we had: Mussels: The accompanying broth didn't give them much character and my wife swore they were undercooked. Petite Iceberg Lettuce: pretty good. One of the better dishes we had that nigh. Handekerchief Pasta: Ok, but we have had this delicate pasta in much better presentations. Steak Frites: Flavor was underwhelming and although perfectly medium, I had expected a piece of meet with a better external texture. Mexican Style Corn on the Cob: served largely room temperature with a goat cheese that seemed to clash with the natural sweetness of the vegetable. The Service: There were times during our meal where we felt completely ignored. It seemed like we were in a restaurant blind spot while servers and expediters bustled around other tables. We waited a long time for water and wine. Our food trickled our slowly. Eventually a server laid claim to our party of two. By then, are experience was already sullied. She was apologetic for about the plates we liked least and and removed them from our bill, but rather than push on the spotty service, we opted to pay the bill and escape into the night. This is a very cute spot. There's nice indoor seating but extremely lovely outdoor seating, which I recommend. I had a reservation for dinner, but you might be able to get away without one. To start, I ordered the fried green tomatoes. They were sliced so thin and didn't have that overly fried feel to them. I highly recommend. For dinner, I had the steak frites, but it was a tough choice. It was ultimately a good choice. The steak was cooked perfectly to order and was flavored so perfectly. The frites was delicious as well, and a generous portion. The atmosphere and environment of the restaurant is very intimate, yet inviting. I brought four generations of my family to Evangeline on New Years weekend and only the toddler was happy with her food. This was our most anticipated meal in Calistoga and also our greatest disappointment. We were all excited to eat there as we love Creole food/culture and all of us have spent lots of time eating our weight in butter while in France. The verdict was that the food felt both insufficiently French and Creole, and was soulless. The service was lackluster, and the outdoor tented area was chilly in both temperature and atmosphere. Based on the menu I saw, I would have thought we were at a seafood restaurant that prepared American ingredients with French technique and the occasional dash of Southern--not uniquely Creole--cooking. A good example of this was the butternut squash soup with pepitas. It was the best thing I ate, creamy and unctuous...and nothing about it had anything to do with France or Louisiana. From reading other reviews it seems that many of the more Creole touches, like serving jambalaya or bringing hot sauce to the table, were dropped. We also liked the deviled eggs, although we preferred the ones at Farmstead the next day. The adorable-looking lemon cake is one of the best gluten-free desserts in town. The aioli is good. Worst dishes were the grainy potato purée, which we spent a good 15 minutes trying to figure out what on earth they'd done so wrong, the boring roast chicken, the bland cassoulet, and the bitterly blackened Brussel sprouts. Our waitress seemed sullen, absent, and argued with us when she got parts of our order wrong. They seemed unused to dealing with families. This was the only restaurant we ate at on our trip where the mother and baby's food came out last, about ten minutes later than everyone else's. That's a million years for a hungry one-year old. No explanation was given. The tent and tables were bare of any decoration, but perhaps it's nice to eat outside here in the summer garden. At this price point I needed better food or more convivial energy. I think the scene in the main restaurant was far cozier, and I'd suggest eating in there if you have a small party. The nonstop upbeat New Orleans Jazz soundtrack just reminded us of how much more fun we'd be having in any restaurant courtyard in that city. Even with heat lamps it wasn't warm enough early in the evening to allow us to remove our coats. Most of the seafood was served cold, which I think was a strategic mistake. This is in the heart of Calistioga so we were able to walk here from our hotel (Calistoga Hot Springs). We were the first people in on a Friday and we had great service. The deviled eggs to start were probably the best I have ever had in my life. Their have a jalapeno jelly on they and the crust/crumbs off fried chicken sprinkled on top. I wish we ordered 2 plates of this- they were that good. Small beer selection but a long wine list. I have a glass of Mumm- it paired well. Bf had the corn soup- its served cold. I liked that they poured it into a bowl of fried corn shells and flowers. Pretty presentation. But the fried corn shells became soggy so mehhhh. I had a starter salad which was nothing to write home about but fresh. Bf had teh salmon which was cooked perfectly and was extremely moist. I had the ettoufe which was so yummy and filling! Huge pieces of shrimp and the hush puppies were BOMB! They also bring you like 5 hot sauces- the Louisiana one and their house-made ones were my favorite! Woefully under seasoned and came with 4 medium sized shrimp (20-25 count) on a bed of plain rice. The hush puppies were abysmal; cold and soggy, so disappointing. Our complaints to both the waiter and the host fell on deaf ears I order the brick chicken, which was pretty tasty. However, the chicken was barely cooked to temp (almost pink). Summary: All in all we were disappointed. After seeing such rave reviews we expected much more, especially at that price point. read more

Every time I come to Evangeline I love it. I always have to get the fried green tomatoes when they're in season and they finally have gumbo on the main menu. If only they added cornbread on the side menu to go with it. Just came in again and had the gumbo and lobster risotto and left satisfied. this was a wonderful french/cajun restaurant located in downtown calistoga. this was our first time coming here for dinner and we sat outside. it has an enjoyable outdoor atmosphere, with citronella candles and piano music playing. prices are moderate and the portions are just right. my favorite dish was the "french-ed" wings. they were crispy and flavorful and it came with a cole slaw. i came with 3 others and i got the cauliflower dish. it was very fresh tasting and the flavors were nice. my brother got the french onion soup and it was so good! the staff are very friendly and attentive. we ordered desert too, and the cake was very good as well. my only complaint is that there are no beignets on the menu- that would be a good addition!! read more

So we had a wonderful meal at Evangeline. As I am writing this, I can barely move since I over stuffed myself! Let's start with the oysters - fresh, crisp, love the sauce. My daughter and husband enjoyed the Vermont creamery butter with baguette and we enjoyed our shared Autumn Harvest salad - the sweet walnuts and thinly sliced pears and globs of soft (goat?) cheese were delicious. We then had French onion soup. My husband declared it one of the best he's had although he wished there was a bit less croutons as he wanted more soup. I thoroughly enjoyed mine without the croutons. Cheese was decadent and oh so good. Onto the main courses. Our 6 year old was very pleased with her modified Evangeline burger (just cheese, a bit of lettuce with mayo and ketchup on the side). I tasted the fries and they were really good. I enjoyed my Shrimp Etouffee - my first time having the dish. The shrimps were cooked to perfection and the sauce was spiced just right - almost too spicy for me, but not. My husband really enjoyed his duck confit - I have to say, I liked the sample I tasted too - especially with the polenta and a bit of what looked like a fig? Okay, so at this point we were stuffed to the gills and had to get to go boxes but what is dinner without dessert? Decaf cappuccinos were good and all 3 of us loved the creme brulee though I wished it was in a more shallow bowl so we could have more crunchy caramel. The Dark chocolate mousse was beyond decadent. I don't know how one person could eat it (good thing we shared)! The bits of chocolate just added to the rich chocolately favor and the nice surprise was the blueberry compote.. just slightly mixed in but big surprise at the bottom - just when we were almost chocolated out was a pool of it at the bottom (and I swear it had a bit of alcohol in it or tasted like at least). YUM! I'd return to this place again because not only was the food all above average, the staff were all great. Our waiter was super attentive and helpful even when we threw in a salad last minute and when my daughter spilled water and we needed new napkins - he was happy as a clam.
