Of all the diners in the area, we've definitely had the best/most consistent luck with the food at the Everyready. (FWIW, my ranking of top 3 is (1) Eveready, (2) Daily Planet, (3) Palace, the latter two have let me down too many times). The tuna melt is really quite excellent, the burgers are prepared well, and even the salads are surprisingly big and fresh. Oh, and the onion rings are really excellent, if you like nice thick onion rings instead of the thin shoestring kind. :) Even some surprise items, like nachos, or artichoke dip, have been good. On popular breakfast standards like eggs, coffee, etc., they're OK-- I wouldn't say great, but honestly, it seems like diner omelettes are usually just kind of OK, I usually end up feeling like I could easily have done just as well at home. We have had a few notable misses though (things we shouldn't have really been trying at a diner anyway, probably: soggy bleah fish and chips, waaay too salty bean soup). I'm also underwhelmed by the mac and cheese (kind of monotonous and very orange), though I have friends that swear by it. I'm also always disappointed at the boring shake and ice cream options, but I like the custard pies when they have them :) The atmosphere is kitsch but not over the top, and a bit of circus at times (especially when there are games at Marist, or late at night when hordes of students descend; though the Palace is similar that respect). But in our experience, the wait is usually manageable and the service can actually be quite fast-- we've never had any problems with it! read more

This is my favorite diner. I've been coming here my whole life. The staff is very friendly and hard working. The food is always great and comes out fast. The new drive thru is working out great. Tired, grumpy, and bleary-eyed after attending an evening wedding the night before, my husband and I stumbled in to the Eveready Diner for breakfast. We were seated immediately, brought coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice, and the waitress patiently returned a few times before I was able to read the menu and make a choice. She was cheerful without being pretentious, knowledgeable without being bossy, and prompt without pushing us. When the food arrived, it was accurate, hot, and delicious! I had malted waffles (who knew you could add malt to waffles?) and the husband had a combo of eggs, home fries, and bacon since he is gluten-free. I was constantly ordering EverReady on Door Dash and thought the food was amazing never going into the diner. I went to the diner for the first time with a friend and the place was disgusting. Filled with flies and bugs. Place looked worn down. Service was terrible. We was waiting forever for our food and when it finally came they had forgotten a food item I ordered and the food was cold. I see mixed reviews and I always note the origin; the dude who gave the awful review is from Pasadena..... ouch. He's probably too used to homeless tents all over L.A. County. Eveready is great! It was my first time and I drove 53 miles each way to attend an event for my friend running for sheriff. It was in the Delano room in the back and the food was far better than I expected. Chicken fingers were delicate and not burnt; other chicken options were equally good. Both pastas were NOT AT ALL soggy or overcooked; the cheesy one was sumptuous and the one with seafood was delectable. The staff was wonderful, particularly the two lovely young ladies tending bar. The owner, Alex Serroukas, was always present and very attentive. Nothing ever ran out and nothing was left behind. If the regular menu is half as good as the buffet, this place is wonderful. Do not eat here, very disappointing these days.. I have been coming to the Eveready Diner for years, but will no longer do so. Since Gus Serroukas has stepped out of the management of his property's, the places have truly fallen apart. All the restaurants owned by this family are now a mess (Double-0, Coyote Cafe, etc). I ate here on 11/24/18; I ordered the special - short ribs; and my wife ordered chicken Marsala. My ribs were so fatty it was impossible to eat; the bottom of the plate was filled with grease drippings making the sides inedible. The meat was tasteless and completely overdone (and I say this with diner quality food in mind). The food tasted days old, and this was at 6:00PM on a Saturday night. My wife's chicken was hard and tasted like the inside of a fridge. Neither of us finished our meals, the waitress didn't ask if everything was OK, or bother to really check on anything. Later that night we both became very ill, I made a complaint with the department of health in dutchess county it was so bad. This place gets enough of a weekend/college crowd to survive off it's glory days, but honestly go elsewhere. The place isn't sanitary and the food is horrible. Save yourself a stomach ache later and just eat at McDonalds down the road. I would bet the kitchen is cleaner there. read more

Classic food with tons of options. I had mamas classic roast and it brought me back to Sunday supper at my childhood home. The veggies were perfectly steamed but needed seasoning. My potatoes were plentiful but I'm not a fan of the cheese flavor. The cheesecake was amazing though and that really finished the meal. The joint is well lit and nostalgic for sure. Was very disappointed in their service. We were there for just shy of an hour and not served our food. People who sat down after us were served and done eating while we were still waiting. Our waitress never stopped by to check on us and see if we needed refills on our drinks or anything. When we went to leave the manager showed up and was very defensive. We never asked to speak to him. We just had enough and wanted to leave. We paid for our drinks and left. We have been eating at this diner for over 10yr and understand being short staffed. Ordered the disco fries and was disappointed. The fries were covered in melted cheddar cheese, probably put under the broiler with bacon. I had to dig under the layer of cheese to find the gravy, which albeit was gravy, had no flavor. The fries were overall too salty. I had a some of the avocado blt burger which was also overly salted. The meat patty also wasn't appetizing. I ordered a Boston cream pie slice of cake, which was fine until 3/4 of the way through, I noticed that the cream was sour and had a smell to it. This establishment scams customer. I tried to order a roatbeer float and the man said we close at 10 until his manager( I think) looked at him. I then paid for my float and tried to leave but then was stopped and asked did I pay and I said yes here is the receipt. They told me this receipt isn't paid for and then I had to pay an extra $5. This diner was recommended to us by a family member that lives in the area. Sadly, though, our experience had made us decide not to return. Two of our kids ordered Chicken and Waffles ... a few minutes later, our server informed us that the waffle machine was broken and they could have French toast or pancakes. Both ordered the French toast. When their plates arrived, they had slabs of French toast -- HUGE pieces. They had not been soaked enough in the egg mix and were dry, dry, dry. Not good at all. The chicken (3 pieces of the tiniest bantam hen ever) were all VERY underdone. In fact, the center of the chicken was ice cold. We called over the server, who called over the manager. They verified by touch that the bone area of the chicken pieces was ICE cold. The manager replaced the dishes and put them directly in a to-go box; we were still charged for them (since they did provide replacements.) I still think we should not have been charged, but they would have been out $30. Too much IMHO. My husband and I ordered Cheeseburgers Deluxe (comes with fries, coleslaw, an onion ring, and a pickle.) The burgers -- meh. Our onion rings were missing and when we told our server, she brought 5 on a plate straight from the grease. They were extremely greasy and I didn't like them at all. If there are two people sharing, why bring 5????? Bring 4 or 6!!! The fries were served in a small metal cup. I guess this was to be cute, but probably for portion control. They were average. The coleslaw was very bland -- we took one bite only. We both agree, the pickle was the best thing on our plates. SAD. Service sucked. We had to get our own additional napkins from the servers' station. Our server couldn't count to five so we had to get ourselves one more silverware. We had to ask twice for a cup of mayonnaise. We had to ask twice for coffee to be refilled for my husband. It was never offered to me. Nor cream or sugar. Our kids had hot chocolate; once that was finished, EACH one had to ask our server to bring a glass of water. It was not in her ability to ask the remaining people at the table if they would like one as well. This diner was featured on DDD. Sadly, we don't recommend it -- have they gotten too big for their britches and don't care about service or quality? Our family of 5 spent $98 here (including tip) ... it was too darn expensive to give them another chance and we won't return. There are better quality diners elsewhere. I've been to this diner chain twice--once to the one in Hyde Park and once to the one in Rhinebeck--and had a similarly mediocre experience at both. Considering that this place is supposed to be along the lines of a classic diner, the menu is a little hard to figure out. It took me a good 5 minutes to find a grilled cheese sandwich on the menu (buried under the make-your-own-sandwiches section) even though diner fare doesn't get much more basic than a grilled cheese. The sandwich itself was a bit rubbery, unfortunately. I had a chocolate shake as well, which was ok, but nothing amazing. Also, diners are generally known for their insanely speedy service, which this place does not have. In fact, I think the food took longer to arrive than it would have in a non-diner restaurant. The Rhinebeck location had so many flies in it, I had to use one hand to continually wave them away while I was eating--gross. In short, there are better places out there. Even for a diner, this one is not up to snuff. read more

I'm just a traveler who stopped by for a bite before visiting FDR. This place was busy, yet fast and friendly. The best Cherry Coke I've had in a while. I had the Greek omelet and it was delicious! My friends had the lunch special that we half a sandwich, soup and salad. The homemade clam chowder was great! My other friend had the Patty melt which was also delicious! On 10/20/13, I was hoping for a good experience but that did not happen. Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a girl (long dark hair) leaning on a counter and yawning. So much for first impressions. I sat at the bar and waited, no one acknowledged that I was there for about 10 minutes. Finally, I ordered the blackjack burger that was supposed to be blackened and served with grilled onions and Jack cheese. After a few bites, it was obvious that the burger was not seasoned at all and had cheddar cheese. The grilled onions were on top of a slice of purple onion...really? When I flagged down a waiter (big guy with thick large black glasses), I told him that the burger was not seasoned and had the wrong cheese. His reply was "sorry about that" and that's all. He did not offer to re-cook the burger or offer an adjustment to the price. There was absolutely no signs of management anywhere. The waiters and waitresses were young, joking and horsing around, not at all professional. One waiter (who has been there since last April I heard him say) was giving free chocolate milk shakes to his friends. The (heavy-set) girl that was supposed to be checking people out was sitting at the bar eating nacho chips and I heard her call someone a "stinky old f*rt"). When taking the money, she did not even ask how the meal was. Needless to say, no tip was left and I will not be returning. read more

I love this place! I've been here a handful of times over the years and it never fails to impress. It has your typical diner food. All of which, in my experience anyway, has been fantastic. I usually stick with breakfast foods at diners and Eveready always serves me great breakfast food! The portions are GIGANTIC!!! If you leave this place hungry, you're stomach is either a bottomless pit or you're too picky. The service is always great too - friendly staff that isn't overbearing but also don't make you wonder if their shift ended and a replacement server hasn't started theirs yet. What really sticks out in my mind is my most recent visit (about a week and a half ago). My mom stopped at the counter to buy some baked goods. The owner or the owner's son (I'm assuming) was behind the counter and he helped my mother and then gave my dad and me not one, not two, but three of their chocolate chip cookies. AT NO CHARGE! Not only were they free but they were delish! Perfect chocolate chip cookies. I found this to be awesome customer service. The same gentleman had delivered our orders to the table and was just very very pleasant to deal with. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for a bite to eat in the Hyde Park/Poughkeepsie Area. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it is a diner :-P read more

Eleven years ago, I was the first to review the Eveready, and I stand by my five star review. I have definitely visited the Eveready more than any other restaurant in my life, possibly twice as many times as whatever holds second place. The place is phenomenal. Everything is made on-site. They even make the cherry Coke for chrissake! The french fries are the best that either my wife or I have ever had. I feel confident ordering anything off the menu. The retro decor. Food's OK, portions are usually big, but these folks are pricing themselves right out of the game. I used to love this place, but now every time I go there the tab is like fifty bucks for two people. I love diner food, but at restaurant prices there are much better options. I guess this is OK for taking Mom out for a fancy breakfast on Mother's day, but on a day to day basis, the prices are out of hand. There are a scare few bargains still on the menu (meatloaf sandwich for 5 bucks) but most of the appetizers are close to $10 now, and the entrees are over $15. Anyway, instead of paying $10 for a burger here, head up to Uncle Chippies in Red Hook where $6 will get you a far better burger. For that matter, the Village Diner in Red Hook has better breakfasts at much more reasonable prices. So, it looks like the Eveready has passed into the tourist trap zone (thanks Guy!) and I'll be looking elsewhere. read more

To Maureen C, the reviewer from October 2010, you obviously have not frequented local diners enough to know what a good diner actually is in the Hudson Valley and what isn't. I wouldn't drive 35 minutes one way to Eveready if their mac and cheese was not the best that I've ever had (Hands down - this is what Guy Fieri raved about in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives!!). Their french toast and belgian waffles are also amazing, and I have never had better onion rings than at this place! Someone said that they were thick - and they definitely aren't. They are perfectly breaded and spiced and you don't eat all of the onion in one bite like most poorly made onion rings turn out. Their fries are always great, fresh, crunch and golden. Any other meal that I've gotten here is pretty good and I have to say that their malt shakes are delicious! Don't waste your time going farther south to a more greek diner if you're looking for the food of the classics, you've come to the right place! The only thing you should be aware of is that some of the waitstaff is in high school and tends not to tend to their other customers when their friends are at their other tables (we experienced this on Sunday, but I just spoke up and all was right with the world :) ) read more

If you and your drunk friends need some late night munchies this is a popular place to stop off. If however you want to eat anything approaching good food than I'd pick another destination. During my two years at the CIA I ate at Eveready a number of times and was pretty much always dissapointed. The food is pricey for what they give you and the service always stinks. That's not to say that the mac and cheese didn't satisfy my late night junk food craving, but that I would have much rather given my six bucks to one of those mom and pop restaurants in downtown Poughkeepsie. read more

Despite the customer service, this diner is absolutely incredible. Every time I walk in to the diner, I am greeted within a minute; it's not always a friendly greeting, but I'm acknowledged nonetheless. The quality of the food is always consistent, the portions are very satisfying and the price is extremely reasonable. I don't think I've ordered anything I didn't like, but I found the Middle Eastern dishes to be the best on the menu, which might have something to do with the owners being Greek. My favorite items on the menu include the Gyro, Burgers, shrimp wrap, pancakes (Like creamy little clouds), the shakes and last but not least, the buttery homemade waffle topped with ice cream! This was my third. Meal at Eveready diner. It has become my go to place for all my meals when I visit the FDR Library and museum with my Father. I had a delightful Hudson Salad for dinner and Corned beef hash breakfast. The Chili for.lunch was a little disappointing. It has a nice brown color with a thick covering of white and yellow cheese. It had a nice chili smell. It is quite thick thanks to a thickener like flour. I was suprised to find no detectible meat.This is some sort of vegetarian chili with tomato chunks, corn, and celery. There was no heat and no Cumin flavor. I'll be back soon but plan to try other things besides Chili. read more
