I ordered poached eggs on my avocado toast instead of hard-boiled eggs. This is a hidden gem in Jamaica Plain, you should give it a go! The reason I gave this a 4/5 star is because it took a while to get our food. We didn't order anything too complicated or extensive. I've enjoyed everything I've had-omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, cookies, brownies, fresh juices and more. But today I had blueberry pancakes, and I have to say that they were THEE MOST DELICIOUS PANCAKES I'VE EVER HAD! I believe it's made from some combination of flour varieties. Evergreen is located in our neighborhood and we love coming here on the weekend for brunch. It's one of our go-to spots when we have visitors too. In the summer months the patio is open and it's a cozy spot that can seat small groups. Their triple-decker sandwich is delicious, and so is everything else on the menu! read more

This was our place to eat when we had some time to kill before we went and sampled beers down the street at the Samuel Adams Brewing Company. I saw this place and decided why not. This was after my failed attempt at finding a breakfast spot that was closed on the weekends. My order was simple, a salmon eggs benedict. It was cooked perfectly and well, that's it right? I mean a benedict is hard to cook and this place did it well. When you break the yolk it came spilling out and wasn't hard and using that english muffin to sop up all the yolk is one of the best things about benedicts. The salmon was fresh and didn't have any funky smell to it so there's that. The capers were also a nice touch that also of course pairs well with the salmon. The service was great, and there's really nothing much more to say about Evergreen. It's a solid 4 stars from me, and would be a place where I would eat brunch if I lived here. Finally got a chance to go for breakfast. Warning: This review is written by a parent. I'm going to talk about kid-related things. You've been warned. First off, can we talk hours? They are open at 7 am. Every day. The diner itself is only closed on Mondays. What does this mean? It means that when my kids wake up at the crack of dawn and I *need* to get out of the house, I can take us to Evergreen, eat breakfast, and be done before most people have even brushed their teeth. This is awesome. Let's talk food. I liked the food I'd tried in the express, but I was really blown away by how good the food was in the diner. I got the Evergreen Avocado Toast. Yes, I know, I'm a millennial, I'm supposedly ruining the world. I get it. But Evergreen gets it even more. They know that I'm a mid-30s parent who just wants to feel special. So they took the concept of avocado toast and dialed it up to 11. They added pesto, capers, smoked salmon, and... ikura. It was excellent, and I don't even care that it was $11. It was fantastic. The other folks in our party got more traditional brunch fare (pancakes, eggs benedict, etc.) and all thought the food was excellent. I snagged some pancakes with syrup (potentially real maple? seemed that way) and was impressed with their delicious multi-grain-ness. Also really liked the fruit side ($3); it got extra points for going beyond traditional fruit sides by including mango. We also tried the fresh squeezed OJ and it was DIVINE. Totally delicious. In terms of kid-friendliness, here's my rundown: -Kid-friendly hours: YEP -High-chairs aplenty: TOTS -Outdoor seating so I don't feel quite so bad when my kid makes a mess or is loud: YOU KNOW IT -Distracting environs: YES! (dogs on parade, occasional shuttle buses, trucks, other kids, etc.) -Plastic cups for kids: OBVS. -Ability to get a single pancake or side of eggs: YEPPERS ($3) -Kids beverage options: OK. (They had regular milk, but no chocolate milk. (I thought they'd be able to add chocolate syrup from the cafe, but that turned out to be mocha syrup.) I know it seems like a little thing, but I do think it'd be a nice option to have it. Also: If you don't do hot chocolate in the summer (even for kids), I'd recommend having a different menu that doesn't list it as an option, or note it as "seasonal." Another idea: Have half-sized (kids only) smoothies (marketing idea: Call the snowflake an "Elsa!") or some herbal iced teas. This was my first time at Evergreen and I've decided that I will need to return. I tried their breakfast burger which consisted of the Smashburger with perfectly cooked egg and bacon with lettuce tomatoes and spicy aïoli. I'm glad they did because their fries were exceptional: borderline between .."is it fried or is it baked" crunch The bun was perfectly toasted, burger was juicy, and as mentioned, the egg was runny enough to add as sauce to the spicy aïoli. My coffee was not exceptional but I can tell that it was light roast. The milk tasted more like cream so I was slightly disappointed with that but I'm sure you could better put them to the test through an Americano. My friend had a vegetarian omelette and he was pleased. But what was far more impressive than the food was the fact that the owner came over to bring me a heated cushion even before an ask. On a weekend nevertheless. He must've seen that I was shivering and decided to relieve me from my misery. We sat outside. The ambience was quite nice despite the fact that the heaters were not all that helpful at 40° temperature. No blame on this establishment since I am one who shivers at 70° My friend enjoyed his pumpkin spice latte so I will assume that I simply need to try more drinks to offer a better assessment of their coffee. They are quite busy on Sunday mornings and they do not take reservations but they do turn tables quickly. I will say that this JP breakfast bunch eatery reminds me somewhat of Milkweed's creative nuance, Life Alive's ingredient freshness, and slightly above average staff attentiveness of the old Bella Luna on a good day. Evergreen is my go-to breakfast spot in the Egleston Square area. Everything I've eaten there is delicious and their little to go coffee bar area is the perfect place to grab a latte or a breakfast sandwich before hopping on the T. Their menu has a lot of the breakfast classics you expect, but also some healthier options with a southeast Asian twist like the Vietnamese rice wrap BLT. My favorite order is the fried green egg Benny with a side of corned beef hash. The hash is homemade with lots of potatoes, onion, scallions and chunks of salty meat. I love it. They also have other hash options like the hash omelet, also delicious. There's a hash Benny too but I love the fried tomatoes so my order is the best of both worlds. Their French toast is also excellent. For drinks they have a full espresso bar and a few smoothie options. They all have banana in them which I don't eat, but friends who have ordered the smoothies liked them a lot. Not a coffee or smoothie person? The dark hot chocolate is liquid crack. Get it. My only issue has been some inconsistent service. The staff are always very nice but can be crazy slow. On my most recent visit we got a table right away but it took 10 minutes to get menus and waters, another 10 to order coffees, 10 to GET the coffees, another 10 to place food orders (the runner who brought coffees wouldn't take our order) and another 30 or longer to actually get the food. We were there for over 2 hours. Craziness!!! If it had been my first visit this would be a 2 star review and I would only reluctantly go back. I just moved to JP and wanted desperately to find a breakfast spot I could fall in love with. I love the decor, the use of free range eggs/metal straws, and above all the food and coffee. My food was even more delicious than I'd expected (and a night/day difference to what I used to get in Allston.) The iced latte and coffee I'd ordered were both delicious as well. I've already asked some friends to come over for brunch since the food was so great. My only issue, and the lack of 5s, is the service is rather slow while also managing to be frantic. I may be too used to a certain pace of service since I'm often in Korea (where everything including cafe service is super fast) visiting family, but my order was pretty simple and if I pay in cash without needing change I shouldn't be waiting 5-10 minutes for a missing to go item when it's not busy at all. I was previously a frequent visitor to Evergreen, but no more. The owner of Evergreen recently aggressively harassed my group about tipping a band at the Midway. The Midway charges a cover-- there is no additional obligation for patrons to tip the band. Regardless of this, this person repeatedly said "Don't be assholes; you need to tip the band; you're being assholes", even after we told her no multiple times. After one of us finally gave her a dollar to go away, she said as she walked away "I'm the owner of Evergreen the most successful cafe in JP, and my sister of Seafood, for a reason", as if this justified her behavior. Surprising she's made it this far in the business world without realizing that short term gain can cost you customer LTV. No more dollars for you from any of us, Evergreen. We will not support a business who's owner thinks it's acceptable to repeatedly bully people into giving them money. This place has been one of the few bright spots during the pandemic, and I'm so happy they're here. During the quarantimes, they have a safe and efficient set-up with plenty of space and barriers/precautions: you order at the window or online via Toast, and then wait at another window to pick up your food/drinks when ready. You can take your order to go, or sit on the DIY outdoor patio (no table service). Service is always with a smile, and the food/drinks are still consistently solid (nowadays I'm especially a fan of their frozen cappuccino and their homemade whoopie pie, along with all my usual breakfasty favorites) and very well priced. And there seems to be a big focus on safety and health- key nowadays-, plus they offer dinner now too which is awesome. Definitely one of my favorite regular spots, especially during pandemic times- let's make sure we patronize them enough so they make it through and stick around for many years to come. read more
