Indoor dining has resumed. It was our first dinner out since March 2020, and it was spectacular. The staff are all friendly and efficient. The tables were well spaced and it was not crowded at 5:45 on a Wednesday. Lots of locals. A warm, family atmosphere. And the food. Did I mention the food? This is SO much better than local carry out and delivery. I had Four Seasons vegetables with two kinds of fresh mushroom, baby corn, and crab sauce. Spouse had his favorite, Hung Sue Gai. Egg rolls and pot stickers for appetizers. Tea has never tasted better. We were there almost two hours. We had thought there would be some to take home for "egg foo leftovers," but we demolished it all. Throughout the pandemic I knew this was the first place I wanted to visit when we were free. A year ago I rated this restaurant 5 stars. Now a year later I can barely leave 2. A simple walk in order of WonTon Soup and Shrimp Toast plus a request for a Makers Mark on the rocks while I waited resulted in a wait of almost a half hour, with no drink to be had. The soup was pretty much just cabbage and the shrimp toast super soggy in a pool of oil to the point that I just threw it away. Evergreen is all about the C's: consistent, copious, Cantonese. Service is attentive and reliable here. You can count on the quality of food to be pretty good too. My extended family comes here on something like a bimonthly basis for birthdays, graduations, holidays, and other celebrations, so the family style meal suits us well. We get like 10 dishes, and most of it shows up in a span of 6.1 minutes. Thank goodness for big lazy Susan's and lightning fast waiters that pack up our leftovers to go mid-meal. I can't believe I've never yelped Evergreen!! This was the first restaurant I ever went to in Chinatown when I first moved here in 2012 and I've never gone anywhere else when I'm in the area!! When I lived in Pilsen it was my go to spot and they deliver!! It's so good! I recently went a couple months ago with some friends, took my family here when they came a few weeks ago and ordered delivery when I stayed downtown for the 4th! They are consistently good! I tried their salt and pepper fried shrimp with the head on and off and they were both good. With the head on gives it more flavor and it's lightly breaded either way so you can't lose! I am a fan of the shrimp fried rice and General tso's chicken and they can make it very spicy or less spicy if you ask. The egg rolls are delightful and the orange chicken is good too! Totally average food (at best). Positive reviews below must be fake. We ordered Mongolian beef and general Tso's chicken. The chicken was so bad, I'm not even sure it was General Tso's (maybe hot/sour?? Who knows!!?) How can they screw up such a staple of a such?? Our egg rolls were basic, greasy and regretful. D and I spent part of the day in Chinatown. We were looking for House of Fortune which we dined at two years back. We didn't see HoF but saw Evergreen Restaurant. I initially got confused thinking Evergreen took over HoF but HoF was two doors down and apparently closed and is replaced by a Hot Pot place. So it was my first time at Evergreen though D was here before with some other friends. Anyway we arrived minutes before a larger party showed up which was a good thing since we were able to place our orders beforehand. D knew for sure that he wanted some Moo Shu Pork. I didn't see it on the menu but they had it available. He opted to make them himself instead of getting them pre-stuffed. I wasn't sure what I wanted. Our server was throwing ideas left and right (she may have been rushing me a bit) and mentioned dungeness crab which I haven't had in forever. So I said yes. We started off with a bowl each of wonton soup which another younger server brought over and accidentally called them egg drop which freaked me out. Lol. Thankfully it was wonton. And it was pretty tasty. D enjoyed his Moo Shu Pork throughly and I liked it as well. The crab of course was a lot of work but I was up to the task and tore that sucker up. I was hovering between 4 and 5 stars while D was strongly in the 5 camp. He pointed out how multiple servers came by to check on how we were doing and this was while they were serving a huge 20 - 30 people party. We went on Christmas Day and the place was busy. We've been coming here for almost 30 years, but haven't been in several years. The food is old school Cantonese, and they do that well. But they were not prepared for service at all. Our lazy susan was dirty (caked with food). They didn't even approach our table until 30 minutes after we sat down. We only got eggrolls and main courses and the dinner took over 2 hours. I think if they're going to have service on Christmas, they should probably make sure they're staffed appropriately. read more

We made reservations for 35 at 5pm 2 weeks ago for Christmas eve. At 7:30 1/2 of us had not been served appetizers and 10 or so walked out. This is something I have never even imagined. The 4 person staff kept ignoring us and served all those not in our party. I have never seen/experienced anything like this. Everyone was waiting patiently to simply be ignored. Visiting China Town in Chicago and decided to eat and found this cozy place at the end of the district. We went early and it wasn't to busy. The staff there was very nice and accommodating. The service was quick, we were seated with drinks right away. The food came out hot and was amazing. We tried several dishes and it definitely was some of the best Chinese food I've had in a long time. My fav was the Orange Peel Chicken and Pork Fried Rice. There's always a first for everything. This was the first restaurant I went to and did not tip. The service was poor with mediocre food. I had to get up and get my own water because my waitress never checked on us. Our waitress also picked up an open bowl of sauce from a guest and gave it to another guest sitting close to us.(This was weird to me, cross contamination) Unfortunately, I hope my poor service wasn't because of my race but after seeing our waitress check on everyone but us totally made us feel unwanted. A local guy asked us what we were looking for (spice levels, foods, cooking, etc.)...and took us down the street {only about 2-3 doors down from our Marriott Hotel} to Evergreen. They had lots of choices on the menu, I got the General Tso's Chicken and my buddy got the Moy's Special. Both were very good, and very good portions. Crab Rangoon was also good. Well done classic Cantonese with better than normal ingredient quality in a very traditional old-Chinatown type of decor. Flavors were very strong, unlike a lot of the newer restaurants in Chinatown although this can be oily and salty at times. One thing that really stood out was the quality of the pork, being much more fatty and flavorful than most places. What really took away from the experience though was how slow the cooking and service was. Even without specialty items, it would be challenging to get in and out in a short amount of time. Convenient location next to our hotel. We went in for lunch at the recommendation of a front desk employee and were pleasantly surprised! Large portions of delicious favorites. If you're ordering more than one dish, and you want them served together, you must tell them, otherwise they serve one dish at a time, we didn't know this and didn't figure it out since the server asked my husband what he wanted, then she asked me. Seemed straight forward enough. My husband ordered bean curd (tofu) with vegetables which came up first. I ordered General Tso's Chicken and a side order of pan fried noodles, which wasn't on the menu as a side, but they gladly said no problem, not only was it not a problem they gave me a huge plate full. Which will make for great leftovers at breakfast. I love pan fried noodles with a couple of over easy eggs on them. Everything was very good, vegetables cooked to the right stage of crispness, chicken nice and crispy with just the right amount of spice. Why not five stars? A very simple fix, please get rid of the TVs. A new favorite place to eat! I was eating at Cai and Ming Hing for quite a while and realized, man it's a ton of money and the food portions kept shrinking. So I tried somewhere else. Evergreen has been around for a decade or two. So we went for father's day (the week after) and it was about half full, a mixture of american and chinese people, some tables had both! I ordered chinese food. The food, I have no complaints about the food! Wow just well cooked flavorful food, the service is kinda your typical chinese restaurant service, though the owner said she has been trying to get them to improve. Bottom Line: Food is better here than the other two places, same price, service not as good. I go for good food over good service/price (I want all 3 though, but until I can find that, this is my new favorite place) Salt and Pepper Short Beef Rib - this is done the way it should be, lightly battered and deep fried and fall off the bone tenderness. Salt and Pepper Shrimp - When you can eat the shell, you know it's good. You can eat this shell. It's also not overly spicy like some places. Salt and Pepper Tofu stuffed w/ shrimp and egg - We had never heard of this and decided, let's try it. The tofu is that koren or japanese tofu that is in a roll, not that cubed stuff. It's firmer and they found a way to make it salt and pepper, and stuff it while keeping it all in one piece. Amazing. Try it! Baked Tofu stuffed w/ Shrimp and american broccoli - our parents don't always like spicy so they ordered this one, though they did say they liked the salt and pepper one as well haha. Probably won't be ordering this because the other one is favorable to them, but this was also good. They put egg drop soup on top of the cubes of tofu stuffed with shrimp. Odd but it was nice, added some creaminess. Honey Walnut Shrimp - One of my favorite dishes, along with salt and pepper ones as you can tell. This one is often messed up by restaurants in some way. This was done in an excellent way, and the best walnuts I have had in a long time. Often walnuts are stale, these are nice and fresh and the shrimp, oh the firmness gave it great substance. Bird's Nest (Deep Sea in a Basket) - Shrimp, Scallops, and baby bok choy in a taro basket. The ultimate failure of this in almost all chinese places is they use either non-taro, or they make it once a week and refry them, or they make both mistakes. Evergreen made neither, it was fresh 100% taro and cooked to perfection. My brother is a huge fan of this and he said it was excellent! The nest itself is crunchy and the seafood was cooked perfectly, let the stuff meld a bit and eat the nest and you get such flavor it's droolable (i made that word up). Fish Fillet w/ Chinese Broccoli - a good clean tasting dish with fresh veggies and fish. Nice and did not fall apart when eating it. Egg Plant Casserole - I don't know why we order this except that our parents like it. I did enjoy it, it's actually spicy which I did not expect. I'm not an egg plant fan by any means but I did enjoy this due to the spiciness, they didn't realize it was spicy I think. Sew Chow (Lotus Root fried w/ some mushrooms, peapods, and other veggies) oh it also comes with chinese sausage. This dish is really only good if you can get it to be nice and not overly oily and crispy That's what they did. It's a traditional casual type dish that chinese people like. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant for dinner if you have a large group to please. It is at the southern end of Wentworth, one of the main drags in Chinatown. The place is always crowded, almost as packed as the fish inside the showcase aquarium. With a large gathering you can order a bunch of dishes and spin the lazy susan around, and there are menu specials where you can get a complete meal with a starter soup and a dessert soup along with several entrees and rice. The dessert soup is a bit bizarre, served warm with sweet red beans and a slimy texture that takes getting used to. I am an adventurous diner, but I'd rather get a plate of sliced oranges for the final course. This is my minor quibble, as the range of dishes is delicious. Some recommendations: - Egg Drop Soup - extremely rich in both body and flavor, this slurpable soup was a great way to start the meal. - Szechuan Tofu - the flavors are balanced extremely well. I've been coming to Evergreen over the years and they deserve a review. This "divey" Chinese restaurant sits a little off the beaten path of Chinatown way at the end of Wentworth and it's probably the best Cantonese food around. You can see all the beautiful pictures everyone has put up here on Yelp. It definitely isn't the most swanky place to hang out, but they're consistent. The portions are large, the service is fast, and they have liquor. My favorites are the Cantonese lobster, the seafood in taro basket, and the pork chops in sweet ketchup sauce. The servers are all fast, but on busy days, the place gets a little overcrowded with the tables seemingly disorganized and the traffic flow impeded in the dining room. Overall, great food, but the bathrooms and overall lack of cleanliness takes away the 5th star. I'm a fan, though. read more

It had been a number of years since I had visited Evergreen and it was as good I remembered it to be. I think they have done a fine job of keeping their standards for their food high; I appreciated the fact that the menu had so many classics of Cantonese and Hong Kong cuisine at appropriate prices. We found everyone who took care of our table to be friendly and solicitious. like they were your aunts and you were eating in their home. We ordered some old favorites: shrimp toast, Hong Kong steak, Sichuan green beens. All the dishes were ample and carefully prepared. It had been a long time since I ventured to Chinatown for a meal. Some of my pals from work made plans to meet here for lunch on a lazy Sunday. The restaurant was pretty empty, but shortly after we arrived folks started trickling in. Tea was served as we looked over the menu. There was a lot to choose from - your usual Chinese fare. I asked about "smelt with spicy salt" and was shown the "Chinese menu." Huh? A different menu for Chinese customers? Hey, wait a minute... When the server realized that I had ordered from a "Chinese menu" somewhere else, he got excited and exchanged the regular menus for the Chinese menus much to the concern of my non-Asian friends. After everyone relaxed we took some chances and ordered entrees we've never had before. I don't know the official names, but the smelt with the spicy salt was good. The oxtail with some kind of Chinese BBQ sauce was tender and delicious. The beef with spicy salt was also good. I know it sounds weird, but tasty nonetheless. The rest of the food wasn't anything to write home about. The service was good and the place seemed to get more crowded as the afternoon went on. I guess we stayed long enough to see the start of the dinner crowd. I would go back although I know there are a lot of other options in the area that might be just as good if not better. read more

This was the worst service ever. Our family decided to have their Christmas Eve dinner here. Reservations were made over a week or so to accommodate 30 people. Most food orders were not taken, so some family left, and the food that arrived after waiting 2 hours arrived cold. Other guess (s) was served before family that had not been serviced at all. They tried charging us for some dishes that were given back to them, again because it was literally very cold as if it had not been cooked. By the way, the waitress wanted a 15 percent tip.
