We had a bunch of varied stuff from the DimSum Menu, and it was all top top notch. Cant remember exactly what we had, it's a picture menu, and as the waiter didnt seem to speak much English, it was point and shoot. All of it was distinctively yum. Like just about every place you can go in Chinatown, the premises appear slightly run-down, in that "we've been here for a hundred years, and you're coming here to eat, not ogle the architecture" way. Turned out not to be cheap-bill for 2 = $80 + change without any booze. But the quality of the food was over the top. Don't mind paying the freight, when the feed is worth it.

Forcing an 18% gratuity after providing terrible service and mid food is unacceptable. Be transparent about your policies from the start instead of putting customers in an awkward situation after the meal.

We clarified that we wanted to eat there and asked for some water, they rudely told us we needed to tip first. And when the food finally arrived, it wasn't even very good. It was dry and no flavor. I'm not selfish when it comes to tipping at all, but a tip should be given AFTER receiving service. At that point, we hadn't even received our food or any actual service yet. If a tip is mandatory, then just include it in the price instead of demanding one before you've provided anything. They barely even offered us water, we practically had to beg for it. If you're going to demand a tip, at least provide service worth tipping for. Ridiculous experience and definitely not a restaurant I would recommend.

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant! I ordered the water spinach with garlic and the sautéed pea pods, and made several special requests--less oil, less salt, no MSG, and no spice. The host was incredibly thoughtful, personally going to the kitchen to ensure everything was prepared exactly as I requested. When I asked if rice was extra, she kindly said it was complimentary--and even brought me a large portion instead of the usual small one. Come for the congee and you tiao (aka "Chinese long john" smh) and rice boxes, and stay for the good value and long history of this stalwart local spot. ===== The first time I came here, they were cash only and you could only order from the no-nonsense lady at the front. Now you can order from their digital kiosk or the fantuan app (and possibly others?) and use your credit card on those! I'm sure they still prefer cash, though, and you probably get a slight discount by ordering directly from the lady. We usually get the pork + century egg congee, you tiao, soy milk, sticky rice ball (it has you tiao, tea egg, pickled mustard, and pork floss in it), and tofu pudding (both savory and sweet versions). I've also tried a bunch of their other items and they were all solid (e.g. fried chicken wings, salt + pepper squid rice box, singapore noodles, etc.). The only thing I don't really like ordering from here is the siu mai since theirs is on the porkier side and I prefer having more shrimp. My nitpicks in case anyone from the restaurant actually reads these reviews lol: it would be nice if reusable plates/utensils were provided for folks dining in to cut down on waste. Sometimes the ratio of rice to non-rice in the rice boxes is a tad high. English translations for the Chinese signs on the walls for special items would help with inclusivity. And maybe if the decor and lighting were zhuzhed up a little, folks would be more inclined to dine in. Overall, though, please keep doing what you're doing. This place is super fast, reliable, and reasonably priced. Even though it's been many years now (ack, I feel old), I haven't noticed any drop in quality. I love that I see the same lady working there every time. No clue if she recognizes me, but I like to think that she does.
