I had a very good experience with a root touch up. The staff was friendly and welcoming even though I wasn't sure if they were open on a Sunday (that was a holiday) and I was a walk in. I had one of the worst haircuts at this place. The barber (an elderly male that did my haircut) brags about doing haircuts for 20+ years but lacks basic skills. He was rushing through the haircut even when there are no other customers and when I suggested him to do it properly, he got very rude and said that he doesn't have a lot of time. If they cannot afford to spend quality time, they should be charging the customers accordingly (like the other cheap barber shops). I had to fix the hair myself at few places after going home, thanks to the crappy haircut I received. Also, the rude behavior I experienced seems to be consistent with the other past reviews of this place. There are a lot of other places that do a decent job for the 25$ price and I'm never visiting this place again. Advice to the business: First learn how to treat your customers. read more

I discovered Expert Hair Do over 5 years ago. Went to get my car washed across the street and had Ken cut my hair - $10. I have yet to go anywhere else. Helen and her husband Ken own this shop and do a great job. They are always friendly and spend quality time with each customer. No short cuts. (ha - no pun intended) Ken is a Barber (within the Salon) so I do not mind seeing him. I love Ken's work as he spends 45 - 60 minutes with every haircut. He is the kind of guy that knows what you want so I no longer need to tell him what to do. The haircuts are between 10 - 12 dollars but I give him a nice tip every time. I love that I get a consistent, clean and great cut every time and that he spends his time with me - even if other people are waiting! If you don't like the cut, he will keep you in the chair until you do. My Offer To You: The first 2 people to respond: Go see Ken. Get your hair cut and tell him that you read my post on Yelp. I didn't realize Expert Hair Do had a yelp following, otherwise I would have posted so long ago! I started getting my hair cut and colored with Helen in 2002, and now that I've moved down to LA for school and work, I still make trips to northern california just so Helen can do my hair. She actually listens to what I want, never cuts it too short and always makes informed/accurate suggestions if I'm unsure. She uses the best quality products which I am especially thankful for since after 8 years of coloring my hair, its still shiny and soft! I've taken a few friends of mine to get help from Helen after a hair disaster or as a gift for a special event and they're so thankful to have found her! Prices have stayed really low and afforadable and yet each customer is taken care of with painstaking care and attention. I absolutely cannot recommend a better hair stylist than Helen. read more

I got my hair cut from Helen, nothing fancy, just a straight across cut (which I asked for, though she probably could have done a style of some sort had I specifically asked). She was very nice and I would definitely come here again when I'm in need of a quick haircut. My old stylist was $50 plus tip, over an hr for a cut, very hard to get an appt, often have to wait even if you show up on time, and she was only open certain days and hours of the week (granted, she was very good). Expert HairDo: no waiting, no appt needed, just $15 plus tip, in and out within half an hour. Note: they don't wash your hair here and I believe blow drying is an extra charge, which is fine with me. I wash my hair the morning before and I don't need a blow dry. Yea, I'd probably come here over the old place. read more

I tried this salon bc others on yelp recommended it for the great price and services. I paid $15 for my haircut and Cindy did a great job. No wash, no hair products added or blow out afterward. She just gave me a perfect little bob with layers. I gave her a picture and said cut it this short and layer it, make it trendy, and that's what I got. She listened and made suggestions for my bangs without being pushy. Also good, was that I didn't have to make an appointment way in advance like at some places. I thought it might be a lame salon as one yelper put 1 star and ranted how it was a dumpy place, but I thought it was quite average inside. No frills. Maybe they were expecting a vidal sasoon kind of operation or something? It's a 15 buck haircut joint people :-p There was one man working there cutting guy's hair too. Hubby has been looking for a new hair place ever since we moved. He found a somewhat decent place but the lady was on vacation, so he tried Ken based on yelp reviews. Hubby asked for a 2-1 fade. Typically they start with the higher number, but not Ken. He started with a 1 and began to use it haphazardly, making hubby very nervous. When he used the scissors with the comb, he was very slow and meticulous. WTH? Shouldn't it be the other way around?? He did not use blending scissors, thereby leaving a very visible line on hubby's head. Can you say mushroom head? Hubby had to intervene several times, pointing out missed or crooked spots. A fruitless task, as he ended up going home and having to fix it himself. I may need to learn to cut his hair if he doesn't find a good place soon! read more

Consistently good experience. And they deserve the five stars for being such genuinely good people. They value their customers and the business. Both husband and wife are very polite and courteous. I always get my hair cut by Ken. In this capitalist day and age of cutthroat competition and corporatization of businesses; small businesses like these are few and have a hard time competing against the giants. They are the worst salon I've been to so far. I do not know the name of the hairdresser but she was giving me stink looks when I said I wanted my hair cut short. After she started working on my hair, 4 more people came into the store and she immediately hurried up and got me out of the place. After I come home I see that the back of my head is cut very weirdly and crooked. I had to go to another place to get it fixed. I am in no way demanding of how my hair looks, just was just a regular cut it short hair cut and she screwed it up very bad. Will never go there again. read more

My son needed haircut and we stopped driving by this place (overall 4 star review). Don't know the name of hairdresser (woman with dark hair), but she did poor job - initially when I came over to take a look and made comments that there is step from neck to hair that needs to be smooth... next time I came up she took hair dryer and blow off my son's hair in my direction... very rude, as soon as another customer came in, she rushed to finish his haircut. My hair was getting long and needed to get trimmed, so instead of going to one of my usual (and very expensive $60-$100) hairstylst in SF, I decided to seek Yelp for an inexpensive and local place to do a simple trim. After careful review of different salons, customer reviews and pricing, I decided to go with Expert Hair Do, and made a same day appt. Now, when I walked into the salon, the tips of my long, gorgeous hair touched a half inch past my navel. I told Kathy, the girl who did my hair, that my hair was too long and I just wanted to trim maybe 2-3 inches off the ends, but still try to keep the layers I had. She was very happy and seemed to understand what I told her, so she began. I do have to say that for those of you who aren't aware, they don't shampoo and style your hair here like my regular salons, which makes sense as to why the haircut was $15. But anyways, she kept cutting and cutting away. I was beginning to get nervous at the end, but just trusted that her end result/vision of what I told her would reflect her work. But alas, it did not.... my hair is WAY shorter than I wanted or expected. The tips of my hair touch about 2 inches past my collar bone... :( way way too short, and there are no layers or style in my hair. This was the first experience here, as well as my first experience getting my hair cut at a cheap place. That being said, I guess you do get what you pay for, but I will most likely NOT be returning here. I will just grow my hair out, and pay the $100 elsewhere to get the quality hair cut and style I expect, even if it is a trim. Bottom line: Ladies, if you love your hair and care about getting a quality hair cut/style, I strongly suggest you take your business elsewhere. This place is great for dudes just wanted a quick haircut, or for those that simply will take more priority in price than quality. I've been coming here for the past several months and I gotta say that Ken is one of the best barbers I've ever been to. It rare that you find someone who really takes their time and pays attention to detail. They don't make barbers like Ken anymore and it's always a pleasure to come to see him. He uses a straight blade razor to give you a clean shave and even gives you a quick back massage at the end of your haircut. For the price and customer service, this place rocks. We've been looking for a place to get our son's hair cut (he's 17 months old and has Definite Views about the Satanic malice of hair cutters at large) and out of desperation stopped at Expert Hair Do. We had no appointment, and it was obvious that there would be storm clouds in the offing the minute my son was carried into the salon, but they kindly found us a chair and in about 5 minutes flat, had his hair trimmed. It's a great haircut -- who knew you could style a 17-month old? I mean, 20% of his body mass is his head -- but even better, they were sympathetic and really sweet and understanding. My son registered his noisy objections for the first couple of moments, but they were so quick and gentle, he calmed down pretty quickly. Great job, and we'll definitely be going back. Poor bastards. This a review strictly for the getting a guy's cut from one of the ladies there. Ive read good reviews about Ken, but I didnt see him and i desperately need a haircut at the time, so I decided to take the risk, and boy was it a mistake. I was a part-time hair stylist during my undergraduate years, so I knew very well what I looking for from my barber. The haircut was $12 plus tip. First thing that hit me was her confidence; She knew how to handle the razor pretty well, but them moment she switched to a layering scissor (having requested the top be cut with that), I can tell she was clueless on how to use such a tool. She grazed one side of my head with that scissor and then switched to a regular scissor out of frustration...TO CUT THE OTHER SIDE! Can you believe that? she had no intent of keeping my hair symmetric! Then she though THAT was too slow, and switched to a razor with comb, and eventually resorted to freehanding the razor completely to cut the top of my hair!! Freehanding on the top should only be done if someone is asking for a buzz-cut / bald cut... NOT for anything else standard. I wanted to get out of here as fast as I can. During the cut, a few jets flew by really close to the ground from a nearby airfield. She immediately dropped what she was doing and ran outside to watch what was going on while I sat there with a Picasso masterpiece on my head. Frankly, there are more urgent priorities she must attend to than pleasing a customer. To sum it up: if you are a GUY looking for a good cut, avoid the ladies here at all costs! If I can catch Ken, I will try to get a haircut from him, but no one else from here! read more

First, let me preface this by saying that the only reason I've ever reviewed a business here was to rave about it, and I'm not thrilled about having to say negative things about the way someone does their job. However, even a week later, I'm still about troubled by my experience here. While I spend a great deal of time and money on dyeing my hair, the cut is so simple that anyone can do it, so I have never been too picky on where I get the cut. I came here because of the yelp reviews, and I was pretty close-by when I decided I needed a trim. I walked in and was greeted by Moon, who was very sweet and friendly. She asked what I wanted done, and I told her just the very tiniest of trims -- I've been trying to grow out my hair, and to clean up the layers just around the face. I know that when you tell them to take off a quarter inch, you can expect them to take off an inch, but she repeated back to me and showed me about an 1/8 of an inch with her fingers, "Just a tiny bit, because you want to keep the length". We agreed, and she started. Again, she was very sweet throughout the process. She started cutting, and showed me an area in the back that was slightly shorter, about 1/4" shorter than the rest, so we agreed to just even it out to that point. When she was done, my hair was at least 1 1/2" shorter than when I came in. Not only that, but it looked like a bit of a hack job on the bottom. My hair had frizzed a little due to the rain, so I was hoping it would look a bit better once it was styled. I asked her to just blow it straight again so I could evaluate, which she did, but instead of a giving a blowout like other stylists, she was actually pushing the brush against my head to flatten it and gave it no tension. It looked worse than when I had just come in from the rain. I then realized what a mistake I had made by coming here, and fantasized about rewinding time to 30 minutes prior and had driven right past. Even so, I was still hopeful that maybe once I got home and styled it, it would look a bit better, so I smiled as I left, and even gave a healthy tip. A few days later, it still looks like I took kitchen shears to my own hair. I now have an appointment to get extensions later this week, and invest a healthy chunk of money to fix this mess since my hair grows out very slowly. Lesson learned the hard way, sadly. read more

I HAVE to say, that this place is by far the best service salon I have been to in very long! I took a weekend vacation in Sunnyvale at the Marriot and went on a late night run with my girlfriend, we walked into several (about 5-6) salons looking for a salon that did nails, hair and wax all in one. One salon on El Camino Real "HAIR AND NAILS" actually turned down our business, the lady was referring me to shops across the street, down the way. We even walked into the smoke shop next door and buy the time I walked out the smoke shop I had realized she turned down our Business because she was closing. (Okay, fine) well we went into other salons such as A & A Nails ect and not only were some merchants rude and over priced but the service was definitely horrible with them. They either blew us off, claimed they were closing soon or tried charging outrageous prices for mediocre service. Then we finally walked into EXPERT HAIR DO. They were all very genuine, happy to even see us, welcomed us in very warmly & had my girlfriend on the hair cutting chair within seconds working on her hair and I sat down and gotten my last bad nail job fixed. They closed at 7, we walked in at 6:30 and their was one other customer getting a hair cut. She was very quiet and as she quietly paid and walked out silently an older man with a huge smile made it a point to stop what he was doing and tell her to have a very good night, thanked her for coming and said Happy Thanks Giving. (Later come to realize he is the owner) what stood out was their genuine hospitality and service. My nail lady was very patient, did not rush at all and even stayed till 7:30ish to finish my nails. The whole hour we were there the Owner Bui and his wife Helen as well as the employees laughed with us, joked with us, complimented us and socialized with us. Even as we left the Owner was outside throwing garbage bags away and smiled and waved at us goodbye as we drove off. The service was impeccable and I can honestly say (although I live in san José) that I would literally drive out here to Sunnyvale just to get my nails or hair cut by them. 5 stars definitely for EXPERT HAIR DO. read more

VERY DISAPPOINTED and will not be coming back here. I had printed out a picture of the hair cut I wanted and decided to try this place based on the reviews I've read on yelp. Moon was my stylist. She looked at the picture and said she could do it but what I got was not the hair cut in the picture. She cut it shorter with a lot of layers on top from what I wanted! I also had my 8 yr. old daughter trim 1/2 inch off her long straight hair. Together, it cost me $33 ($18 for haircut, $15 for my daughters). I gave Moon $40 and she gave me $1 back. She said thank you for her $3 tip and gave the other $3 to the stylist that trimmed my daughter's hair. I should've had the prerogative to tip appropriately, which would've not been much. read more

I've been coming here on and off for years, Helen has always done a fantastic job on my hair. Last fall, she transformed my A-line (done by another hairdresser-I'd had it for around 2 months and it was growing out funky) into a beautiful pixie cut. I've never had a bad experience with her, and Ken is a cool guy, too. The pixie is wonderful, I've been in for some trims and touch ups, and all is going well. I have had my hair cut three times in this salon, by both women working there, and have always left happy. Both women are very friendly and seem competent. No shampoo, just spray with water and cut, 15 minutes and $14 later, I'm done. Never have to make an appointment, but I would recommend calling first to make sure they aren't busy. I love getting a razor shave after a haircut and this is the only place I know that still does razor (if you want it). Ken also gives you a back massage. He remembers your name and your hair style - no need to repeat. I drive 20 mins just to get Ken and look forward to my haircuts read more

I made an appointment with Helen, following the reviews on yelp. I wanted a haircut for my 8-year-old son. I give 3 stars to the haircut and 1 star to the manners. Here's the recount of events. When I got in, Helen told us to wait for a moment. 13 minutes later she called us and we walked to her. I had my computer open to show her a picture of the haircut I wanted for my son, but she said, "Wait, I'll be with you in a couple of minutes." She turned around at her desk and took payment from the previous customer. Two minutes later she finally let me show her the picture. She said fine and prepared to start the job. She didn't make a single comment while at it, although she would tend to her employees asking her questions (in Vietnamese). While she was cutting with the razor on top of the comb, I complimented her: "You are so skillful." No response. In ten minutes, discounting the interruptions, she asked, "Is this short enough for him?" I said yes. I went to the paying desk and asked if they took Discover. She said no, no cards under $20." I reached for the cash in my purse and she picked up the phone. I put the payment + tip on the desk and low and behold... no response!! She didn't even look up once to say thank you or simply bye. She just continued talking on the phone. I couldn't believe it! read more
