Until , a friend of mine mentioned that she had a very good & tasty cheesesteak given to her by a friend. Of course I had to know where it was from. Explorers Den,she said. I was surprised, so I decided to check them out again since it had been years since I've been there. As a La Salle student I have been going to the Den regularly for a couple of years now. The prices are great and the food is too. I went today and got a slice of pizza and a buffalo chicken wrap which is my favorite item on the menu. It tasted great and was made in about 15 minutes. The food overall is good, most times it is always fresh and hot and placing your order is relatively easy. My 2-star rating is due to the lackluster customer service, your wait time is too damn long and the counter ladies are not that friendly nor understanding of your time, and that time is a commodity that many do not want to waste in their establishment. So a few friends and I were on La Salle's campus in blizzard like conditions today, and were so relieved to find Explorer's Den delivered to the Olney building on campus. But that was kinda where in ended for me unfortunately. I got a veggie quesadilla that was just not good. There were too many random veggies piled on which made the rest of the quesadilla soggy and gross. Also, it tasted like the styrophoam it came in. Maybe I didn't eat it quickly enough and it was my fault? A few of my friends ordered chicken quesadillas well done and they looked to be more structurally sound than my veggie affair. The fries were good though and managed to stay crispy thankfully. My friend got a meatball parm sandwich and when asked how it was, her answer was "edible." I used to eat here forty (40) years ago while attending the COLLEGE. On a return visit about 5 or 10 years ago I noticed Bob to be gone and it looked like the people that worked for him "inherited' the place. It was awful. If there's been an improvement due to a turnover then GREAT! I used to tell all my out-of-this-area friends that this was the best. Bob knew how to make a great cheesesteak. No cheeze-wiz crap just "real" processed American Square or provolone/mozarella. The secret was the chopping of the steak with the onions while cooking it. Yes - this made it seem like hamburger to the un-informed but it really was something else! A unique blend of flavors. Bob used real top-sirloin that he froze and then cut on a luncheon deli slicer. This joint was a bit of a disappointment. My first experience in this part of town as this was right next to LaSalle University. I was stoked to try it as I imagined this would have been one of the top cheesteaks in all of Philly. No. It was just ok. There was a soupy onion flavor with the onions on the steak and the cheese ratio was that so I could barely tell there was any cheese at all. There was a lot of meat, and it was over cooked a bit, most of it starting to shrivel. The steak came out pretty fast which was cool, but my buddies' steak stromboli took foreverrrrr to come out. I tried it; it was pretty good. Not worth the wait good, but pretty good nonetheless. The service was just not there. Not rude, just not friendly. I don't need someone to be overly nice, but they were a bit rough around the edges. The place itself looks a bit third world on the inside. There's one table, a few benches and a bar with some stools to sit at. You're best bet is to get it to go. Or skip it altogether - nothing special here. read more

The recent (2011) change back in ownership of Explorer's Den has improved the customer friendliness and menu of this establishment. It's twice as good as it had been. I can place an order, and have it be done in five minutes, done right! The call-ahead system is wonderful, I never have to wait in any unnecessary long line anymore (used to take half an hour here, routinely). This would have been incomprehensible for the previous owners. Further, hoagie standards such as "roast beef" are no longer "out of stock" all the damn time! And they haven't screwed up my order yet. So they appear to have cleaned up their act a little bit. Very impressed. Unfortunately, the diligence and noticeable improvements in their customer service department have not really translated into food that I could consider myself a "fan" of. I do enjoy a good cheesesteak in this city, and I understand that the roll usually defines a genuinely good cheesesteak. The rolls at the Den are way too thin and therefore they become soggy. Nobody wants that. And Explorers Den's sizeable ingredients compound this problem, they still continue to pack too much meat on a sandwich, as their reputation has always been for quantity not so much quality. What happens is, the bread will never hold up, so this cheesesteak falls apart and you would require a fork to pick it up. And they seem ever insistent here on putting the lettuce and tomato under the meat, instead of topping the sandwich. It creates a messy meal. Knowing their cheese steaks are sloppiness, they should automatically put napkins in the bag, I should not have to request them. As for the taste and texture, my most recent cheesesteak more resembled a breakfast food than any other kind of meal. The cheesesteak had a consistency similar to ground beef, rather than prime chopped steak. The overall effect of this sandwich was less than satisfying. read more

Came here this afternoon for the first time and had THE BEST HOAGIE I have ever eaten, ever. The hoagie was humongous loaded with meats and vegetables and the hot peppers were perfect! I brought half the hoagie home and my husband ate it and he claimed it was THE BEST HOAGIE he has ever had despite it being half soggy from sitting in the fridge for 7 hours! lol We are moving out of state in a couple weeks and I am really sad we hadn't discovered this place sooner but at least I'd like to help get the word out. I frequented this joint while I went to La Salle, and that's what it is-college food. And as college food goes, it's great. They deliver late (good for all nighters), there is no minimum dollar amount for delivery (all you want is a $5 wrap? No big deal), and they usually don't take too long (40 mins max). The prices are fair- good price for good pizza ( and its wayyyy better than dominos or papa johns). The food is good,, especially for the area. I enjoyed:: hot buffalo wings, pizza, Caesar wrap, gyro, chicken fingers, cheesesteak, hoagies, house salad (so many veggies), jalapeño poppers, and their fries were good too. I did not enjoy:: Stromboli (they literally folded a pizza in half before they cooked it. It was really bad, but I haven't found a place in Philly that does a good Stromboli, they all do it this way), and chicken pesto panini (just not good, but it's a pizza joint, not a deli). Bottom line, if you are hungry - this is a great place to eat. It is exactly what you would expect from a corner college eatery. My parents even liked it. Counter space was un-kept and visual signs of cross contamination from other cooks running around, no sense of order. they had rolls stored on the floor ( BIG no no ) could not keep me in the building another second. French fries are not safe from this place. Not what it used to be back in the day. I remember my family going there as a kid. You would walk in and here the clink clink of the spatula. You could smell the aroma of cheese steak in the air, see the pics of old LaSalle players on the wall. Home of the foot long cheese steak, well it used to be anyway. Packed with meat, so much the meat that fell on the side you could make another sandwhich out of it! I remember they closed down to renovate, and it hasn't been the same since. I just went there today and I think this is the worse cheese steak I've had from them ever. The cheese wasn't meltes on it, most of the ketchup seemed to be at the end of the roll so when you picked it up, most of fell out My cheese fries seemed to only have cheese in the middle, on the first few cheese fries which were at the very center. I ate it since I wasted my $10.18 but the best part was my can soda of the lunch special. read more

Ordered 12 onion rings for 3$. They gave me substitute onion rings from Murry's and had the nerve to over cook them. Tried to put ketchup on em but it was some nasty Red Gold brand made with two types of corn syrups. Ordered a white veggie pizza. Looks undercooked. I would bake it more but my oven broke. Tastes nasty unless i remove all the vegetables. The threw like a whole can of spinach on it and the juice still drips off. Its nasty and im high so thats bad. Ill just get a reg cheese next time.
