Gentleman at counter was extremely kind! Seems like a family owned shop. Very clean and smelled heavenly. Apple fritters are my favorite so I'm kind of a little picky about them. These are the BEST donuts anywhere!!! I highly recommend the APPLE FRITTERS and the chocolate covered old fashioned donut (which is my favorite). If you live far away, you can buy multiple apple fritters, take them home and freeze them for later consumption. You wll be AMAZED how fresh they are thawed from frozen. I bought these to sell at my restaurant for 10 years and my customers LOVED them!!! read more

I'm gonna go ahead and give this place 5 stars. So I'm a donut-o-holic. I'm a pilot, and I try donuts everywhere. You'd think I was a cop, right? Well, pilots love donuts too. I'd given up on Arizona donuts. Everything I've tried in a year of living here has been super average at best. "But it's just a donut," you say. No. It's not. So, a great donut is a delicate balance. A great donut is pillowy-soft, but just firm enough to hold its shape. A crappy donut is really firm and sometimes stiff. A great donut MELTS in your mouth. A crappy donut has to be chewed. A great donut has dough that has a medium structure. Not too many holes, not too light, and not too dense. It HAS to be just right. Also, a great donut leaves no greasy aftertaste. It's a clean finish. A crappy donut leaves the roof of your mouth coated in a slightly greasy film. A crappy donut tastes like used oil. A great donut is dropping into a fryer where the oil is changed every few days, and the oil is high quality. Canola oil, for example, used to be a truck lubricant. So eating a donut fried in old canola oil is what you get at a hospital cafeteria or a crappy donut place. And last, a great donut has FLAVOR. It's not just sugar dough. There should be a slightly vanilla tinge in every bite. Not too much though. And it has to be good quality vanilla, not imitation vanilla. A great donut, then, is not super cheap. Gold ingredients, fresh oil, not letting them get stale, and authentic, fresh ingredients are the secrets of great donuts. It's rare you find all of those at a local donut place. Express Donuts has them all. Try them all because you won't go wrong. Glazed, maple, old fashioned...whatever. All fresh and tasty and perfectly doughy. Oh, and very fresh. There is NOTHING so offensive as a 3-day old donut. They should be outlawed. What one eats at a grocery store or Dunkin Donuts is a glob of chemicals, formed into a dough and stuffed with plastics, fake flavors, and preservatives, dropped into a vat of 15-day old industrial lubricant, then covered in glaze and left on the tray for up to 4 days or until the dude with the corporate polo shirt buys them for the office at half-price so he can impress his boss, who doesn't know the difference between a plastic lard-cake and a work of art. Express donuts... take it from me: darned good donuts. 5 stars worth. read more

My first time trying Express Donuts. Went around 10am. It was a little busy but they still had a good selection still available. Had them just choose a dozen for me. Brought them home to have with coffee. The donuts were fresh and delicious. I liked that the donuts were not overly sweet. The place was very clean and service was great! Will buy here again. I had a cream puff donut and an iced caramel latte. It's not typically what people order when they go to this establishment but I bought it because I've never seen so much cream on a donut before. The staff let me know that they only set *those* donuts out on the weekend because it's hard to keep that type of pastry cream fresh. That donut was pretty filling and cost about average, at $1.75. It definitely was not dry or stale or anything. It had glaze on it but it wasn't ridiculously sugary. I'd say it was good and breakfast, whereas some donut shops are a little more on the dessert side. To some peoples' dismay, and others' delight, I am a Starbucks fan, but I felt like supporting the local donut shop and trying their coffee. It was $4.95 for a small, which is on the expensive side. I called and told him that I found this cafe and asked if he wanted anything - and he said he'd been there a couple of times before on the way to work. The bagels (though he told me that they were fresh and delicious) were a footnote to all the offerings. I honestly felt overwhelmed. The cashier said I could choose a fresh baked item - I selected a croissant - and they'd stuff it with sandwich ingredients. I chose chicken salad and it was epic. Generous shreds of chicken in a flavorful dressing that was creamy without tasting like greasy mayo. To top it off, you can choose a "free" bag of gourmet chips off a rack. Been here before and the amount of donuts was just leftover pickings. Third time coming in and this time I came around 830 and they had lots of donuts. There was a line but with the two girls both taking orders it wasn't a wait. Gave me a minute to start on my selection. I've taken countless photos of my visits because there is always something new to see, taste, or admire. Under its new ownership, New York West Bakery has evolved into a wonderfully unique fusion-style café. The menu is delightfully unexpected, featuring everything from traditional breakfast favorites and homemade tamales to incredible Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. If I can dig up some of my photos, I'll add them because these sandwiches deserve their own spotlight. The transformation isn't limited to the menu. The Interior: Spotlessly clean. During one recent visit, I watched an energetic staff member carefully mopping the floors and making sure everything looked perfect. It's obvious they take pride in the place. The Exterior: They've added a charming outdoor patio complete with colorful umbrellas, comfortable seating, and newly planted trees that will provide even more shade as they grow. It's a fantastic addition and makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a pastry and coffee. The Food: Where This Place Really Shines When New York West Bakery gets it right, they absolutely knock it out of the park. Their fruit tarts are hands-down some of the best I've had in years. They're fresh, beautiful, bursting with flavor, and surprisingly affordable for the quality you're getting. Best of all, everything is made from scratch, which shows in every bite. The newer savory menu items are also a huge win. Their Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches deliver serious value. They're enormous. Honestly, one sandwich is big enough to share and still leave you feeling satisfied... or at least leave just enough room for dessert. And speaking of dessert, I have to mention those fruit tarts one more time. They're that good. My wife Lucy absolutely loves them. In fact, "love" might be an understatement. I love that they added outdoor seating with cheery umbrellas and have planted trees to provide additional ambiance and shade, although the highway noise will always be problematic. The inside is spotless and while I was there a friendly staffer was keeping it that way by energetically mopping. Sadly, the St. Joseph's pastry I had had a tough not flaky or crisp shell, but the ricotta filling was light and good. I was so looking forward to the poppy seed bread but when I got it home and cut into it, the filling was not spread out throughout the bread and there wasn't much of it. The bread itself was not tear apart tender, but dry. I saved it by slathering butter on it and lightly toasting it, but that shouldn't have been necessary. For the prices, everything should have been top notch or marked down and labeled as day-olds. I'm curious about the breakfast and lunch café options, so I'll probably go back to give them a try, but note that the prices have increased by more than a few cents per item since the 2025 someone else posted, so check for the latest. Maybe they are trying to do too much and should limit the variety and be known for a few super delicious items that are always fresh and superior to what you could get in a supermarket. Having a few signature items and being the go-to place during special holidays would help define them, and please, please FRESHNESS is crucial--maybe the products are just drying out more because we're in AZ, but I'm not the only one mentioning dried out items.
