Paid to have it ready on Monday. Got sent back two days in a row saying they needed more time. Showed up Wednesday and they said they needed even more time. Once I picked it up later that day I put it on and was sad to see they made my dress look cheap by bunching up the sides. Poorly tailored and fits worse than when it was brought in. I will most likely never return here to have any of tailoring done, and here's why. I came in to have my bridesmaid dress tailored. It's a simple 2 layers with chiffon dress, so all the tailor had to do was to cut it evenly- so you thought they would.. I received the dress and noticed the front was fine but chiffon in the back was cut much higher than the inside layer. Honestly there's nothing they could do to fix it because the only way to make it even is to shorten the dress (which aesthetically not pretty). How can a tailor make such mistake? Don't know. What is not to like here, where you can get you clothes altered while you wait. The prices are extremely decent and I have never had any complaints based on my 20 trips to them. Junior the man behind the counter is a craftsman, understands you needs well and is pretty quick in giving you suggestions and has a good eye. I grew up on the Lower East Side before it became "trendy" and all the local Hispanic owned tailor shops were priced out of the neighborhood due to gentrification. What used to be a thriving industry is now reduced to maybe three or four tailor shops. Of these, I found Express Tailor Shop to probably be the best. Speaking for myself, I've always been satisfied with their work and their prices are competitive. They can usually do simple jobs like hemming pants or whatnot the same day, often while you wait, which to me is a giant plus since I no longer live in the area. Much, I mean MUCH, better than Orchard Express, especially if the bald man at the front service desk is there. He often speaks to other tailors in Spanish and increases the price if he thinks you can afford it. read more

Unreliable and unprofessional. I needed a simple alteration for a bridesmaids dress. When I came to pick it up on my way out of town for the event, the dress was still sitting there untouched because the tailor had forgotten about it. He didn't apologize or talk to me directly. He just told his assistant to do it then and there very quickly. I intervened and said absolutely not, I wasn't taking any more chances with them. These guys are super fast and very affordable. Plus they are friendly and approachable. My advice is to make it extremely clear what you want to get done. And if possible you should try on your garment in the shop so that they know exactly what you need. If I had a really expensive garment or a precision job, I might take it to a higher end tailor. But in my experience even expensive tailors don't guarantee great results. Pretty much anything you want to get done these guys can do. I brought in a jacket with a broken zipper. I provided the zipper in the color I wanted and within a few hours they had installed the new zipper. I took it home and I found out it was positioned a little low on the neck, and I brought it back the next week. They happily revised it for me. Entire cost was only $20. This is a real old-school New York place. You get the feeling the interior hasn't been touched for at least 40 years. I love looking at the weird paintings and assorted paraphernalia on the walls and in the windows. read more

Quick and fast work for simple alterations! I came down here on a Saturday afternoon to get three pairs of pants hemmed. They took me almost immediately (showed up without reservation), took my measurements, and then told me they'd be done in about 30-40 minutes. I took a walk around the neighborhood, came back, and they were all done as promised! I tried on the pants and asked for some fine tuning, which they did right then and there on the spot. All in all, I'm super satisfied with my experience here - the guys were friendly yet casual. You may need to push a little bit on the fine adjustments if you think they're needed, but they won't argue with you by any means. $10/pant hem and 30min turn around is better than other places I was looking at in other parts of the city, which were $25/pant hem and 5 day turnaround. read more

The tailor in this shop really needs a reality check. He hemmed my boyfriends dress pants and they were clearly uneven. Instead of delivering good customer service and adjusting it (which ultimately took less than 10 minutes) he argued back and forth with him that the measurements don't lie and if "he sees" that one is longer than the other then he would fix it. Ridiculous. Maybe one of my boyfriends legs is longer than the other or maybe this tailor can't accept that his measurements are wrong but either way, to everyone looking at the pants they were uneven and shouldn't not be kept that way just because the 'measurements don't lie'. If you want to pay top dollar for shanty work, and argument, and a headache then this is the place for you. read more

I came to this place for all my alterations! Not anymore after tonight. Came to pick up at 6:20pm , in the receipt said it close at 7pm but now they changed business time close at 6pm. Upon arrival, one customer and 3-4 staffs were inside. The staffs keep waving and posing they are closed! Two of them standing there and not doing anything but keep showing hand signal store is closed and showing some shitty face for a almost a min! Come on, I just need to pick up and I had pay off the balance in advance. They don't even care to come close to the door and talk to me. I called their phone few times and they don't even bother to pick up to have a conversation. I insist and keep calling, 10 mins after finally, a gentleman came by and assist. I tried asking him before how much it costed and he wouldn't tell me he just asked me questions about what measurements. He charged less for certain alterations (which have their prices listed) but magically some quick measurements cost $20. Don't go here. I've been coming here for years. A friend of mine introduced this location to me and now I am hooked. This location is completely out of the way so I hope with the following reasons I can convince you to be patron of this establishment. The service, professionalism, workmanship, and price gets my support. The price is 70% higher in my neighborhood versus this location so over the long run will make up the difference and let me tell you, I am a shop a-holic. There is also a lot of competition in the neighborhood so this drives down the price. A lot of restaurants are closing just slapping a note on the door. If I could give 0 stars I would. This is the first yelp review I have ever written - they were just so bad I needed to put it on record. I went to get my dress hemmed at the bottom. It is a dress for a wedding so it had an inner and outer layer. But otherwise straightforward job. When I came back to pick up - I tried it and the cutting of the inside layer was so uneven that it peeked out on the left side of the dress (i.e the outside layer was cut shorter than the inside layer). The guy said it would take 10 min to fix so i came back in 20 min - when I came back they hadn't even started working on it. But people get busy so fine. I sat there and waited again. After they finally finished, I tried on again and realized that now the back of the dress is way shorter than the front. When I told them that they said they cut the dress evenly around the bottom so if I wear heels it would of course be shorter at the back. But when they measured the hemming I had the heels on so that should have been taken into account. A professional tailor should also know that if someone is wearing a long dress with heels the back of the dress should be hemmed a bit less than the front to look even with heels on. They did nothing to try to fix the issue and just ignored me. Still charged me. All in all - unprofessional, irresponsible. Take your money elsewhere. read more

Dear Express Tailor Shop, A couple months back I stopped in to inquire about getting a bridesmaid dress fitted. The dress was nearly 2 sizes too big but you guys declared it wouldn't be an issue. You measured, pinned and told me it would be ready in 3 days. When I stopped back in to pick up the dress I was ecstatic to find that it fit like a glove. The tailor assigned to my case hemmed that dress like a boss and I couldn't have been happier. The price of the alteration was more than I was hoping to spend (about $75) but not only did you shorten a couple inches, you took that dress in nearly 3".... so I wasn't really all that surprised by the cost. I've been a happy customer for the past 18 years... started coming here after college and continue to do so... the tailors never disappoint. I've had everything from hemming jeans to reconstructing $4,000 dresses. I always try my outfits on and clearly communicate what I want and re-confirm when they are giving me the ticket. Also, try on before leaving the shop so they can quickly fix anything else that is needed. I don't understand the other reviews on here. If you don't try on an outfit how will they accurately get the measurement? How can they quote you something over the phone when they do not know the material or exact work that is needed to meet a customers requirements. Communicate and try on in person and you will never have an issue. Love these guys! read more

Completely unprofessional. They guy working the front desk was flirting with a bunch of 16 year old girls instead of catering to customers as the line grew almost out the door. He stitched my pants together in less than 5 minutes. The work was done poorly and my pants were ruined. I made a complaint and he told us to leave and gave us our clothes back. read more

I'm not one to take the time to write a review typically, but I just felt I was taken advantage of a bit by this business. I respect how busy and hardworking they are, and I am happy to support any independent trade business as I feel they are very important to the city. That being said, I felt from the moment I began speaking to the staff that I was not only not a priority to them, I was taken advantage of based on the type of garments I was bringing them (and the brands) as well as my profile. I brought in a number of expensive items left to me by a deceased family member, and was told it was too many items to bring it at once. Despite offering to come back another time, the staff insisted I stay and submit the order regardless. They were very visually frustrated and continued to tell me how I was inconveniencing them regardless of my numerous offers to come back another time. I could tell I was being treated with less respect that a lot of the clientele around me who were getting much cheaper (and less) work done. When fitting my items, the employee was not paying much attention to what I was asking to have done, and rushing me through the process. Then when it came to billing, the cost of the job was extremely expensive. Probably their biggest job of the week. I did not feel great leaving my items with them but I did not want to haggle as again, I am happy to support these types of businesses. Of course my gut was right however, as the job took an entire week longer than I was told and the garments were not tailored with love whatsoever. Some items felt as though they were hardly altered at all, and loose threads and strings were left throughout. Right and left pockets did not match up after re-stitching, and a number of other imperfections were found. I spent quite a lot of money to try to make these important items fit me properly, and I feel I could have gotten a much more personalized and honest experience somewhere else. It's a shame that such beautiful items left to me by a family member were treated as nothing but another job for a seemingly "rich kid" (what I was made to feel like they took me for). Again I do not want to ask for any type of refund or additional work as I'm not the type of person to nitpick these types of things in life, especially from an honest hardworking business. I respect their work ethic and their ability to maintain a solid clientele. But I can't help but feel I was profiled to some degree and taken advantage of for work that was sub-par. read more

I dropped off a dress here for hemming over a week before I needed it for an event. They said it would be ready a week and a half later which was no problem. However, when I got there the day they said it would be ready, they said the items weren't ready and to come back in an hour. I had work so came back the next day and the items still weren't ready. I asked them to just give me a refund but they said they couldn't and made me wait while they quickly hemmed the items in front of me. Watch out for this Tailor shop! They promise to have things fixed in time to just disappoint you. All I needed was sleeves done and take the jacket in slightly for my best friends wedding and they couldn't come through for me. Instead of apologizing the tailor just gave excuses why it wasn't done on time! He then told me he would have it completed in a hour but 3 hours passed with no communication. I went to go pick it up and he had just started working on it but I couldn't wait I was already running late for the wedding! I had to wear something completely different and wasn't what was picked out by the groom. It was upsetting to all! This wasn't the first time this had happened to me at this location! Today when I finally picked up the jacket I still got more excuses and no apology! The tailor was rude and aggressive! This was inexcusable and horrible to treat customers. After Junior left the shop, the alterations no longer hits the same. Rafa, the gentleman who does the pinning, simply doesn't have an keen eye for tails as Junior did. Alterations here are extremely rushed and returned to clients with sloppy and uneven threading. Picked up a pair of jeans only for one side of the leg to not match the other side. I wanted to love this place cuz they do great work and are close to me, but the "express" in their title is misleading. 3/4 times I've taken clothes to them In the last few months have been late. I go to the shop to pick up my items, and they haven't even been touched yet and I've been asked to come back. I try to give them plenty of time to work on things--, the last 3 items I brought were 2 popped buttons and a simple strap adjust, and asked to pick up 3 days later. When I showed up, nothing was done. On something that should only take about 10 minutes total! Come on. Today I called about a dress that I specifically told them I NEEDED in the AM because I have a flight to catch, and it wasn't ready. Their prices also aren't consistent. I've gotten numerous dresses hemmed (all 1 layer, nothing complicated), and have been told different prices every time.
