The first unit I rented in April 2016 in Building K had a lock fitting that can be removed from the outside of the locked unit with a Phillips screwdriver. I did not look closely until I had moved in my things and locked the unit. Then I realized my items could be removed by anyone who is able to access the yard. The staff assured me that these units were "grandfathered in" and since they are near the manager's apartment, her dogs would bark if anyone tried to take my items. This did not seem sensible to me, so I requested a different unit. It was slightly smaller and cheaper, but I was not offered a refund. I also had to move everything across the street to a different building in a different gated area, taking me an additional two hours of work. After that, my experience was generally positive and my items were accessible when I needed them and stored safely. One Sunday evening the only elevator in Building J was out of order, and there was no way to get help beyond leaving a message on the store voicemail since the manager's apartment is behind a locked gate in the other area. I had to carry my items down the steps from the second floor. Buyer beware. read more

Expect your rent to go up annually, and don't expect to get a $50 credit for referring someone, as they advertise. You'll both receive forms and forms to fill out and submit, and then nothing happens. read more

Who would think you could give a bad review or any review for a storage facility? Well lets say this the storage facility is fine its the people who work in the office that leave you with a really bad feeling about the place. Suffice to say this they withhold information until they have your money and then nonchalantly drop a card and a person in front of you and ask for your fingerprints and if you question this they flat out lie to you. They go so far as to suggest you have something to hide if you don't want to be fingerprinted. What next blood typing and DNA?? R THEY FOR REAL!! When asked if all storage facilities require fingerprinting they lie again. No other facility known to me and I looked at 5 in my area require fingerprinting. PLUS THEY HAVE MY MONEY AND R MAKING ME WAIT TO GET IT BACK. SAVE YOURSELF THE PROBLEMS GO TO PUBLIC STORAGE YOU DON'T WANT THESE PEOPLE ACCESSING YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE CREDIT CARDS OR ANY OTHER CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION. read more

I've stored my stuff for the past 2 years at Extra Space Storage. The rates were low at the beginning, then 6 mos later, they start jacking up the rates ever couple months, and now, i'm paying about 30% more than I did when i got there. I actually pay about $20 more a month than I would if i just walked in off the street and rented the same space. When I tried to appeal the rate increase, they were apathetic and told me there was nowhere to complain or appeal. I am now moving out of there because I can't stand the dishonest way they do business. read more

the prices are great (superbly cheap), and the site facilities are decent and seemingly secure. the cancellation of storage with 7 days advance notice is convenient. one thing that bothered me tremendously is how super slow the customer service is in the office/at the counter. the staff there just seem to move at glacial speed. also the access hours tend to be during normal business hours. it would be great if somehow it could be accessible for more hours, perhaps well into the night. read more

They are like the others in this industry. They will lure you in with a low rate, but then raise it often and much - about 25% a year.

Decent Berkeley storage with caveats. Clean, secure-looking, well-maintained property. My indoor unit was spartan but nicely-painted, and had proper motion-controlled lights, elevators, and PIN-code gate access. Separator walls did not extend to the ceiling; I did not have any trouble, but you have to trust your neighbors. Staff was friendly and attentive, though I had little occasion to deal with them. Beware of price increases: rent on my 5x5 space increased from the original $43/mo in July 2010 to $48 in December to $53 in July 2011--not including the $9/mo insurance policy. read more

Agree with other poster about the rate increases. This is how they make their money. Our rates increase by $10 a month every six months or so. We signed up around $130 and now we're almost at $200. Forget it, we're moving out. ALso, the place is not well lit or well maintained. Management (Ali) informed me that the entire J building leaks and that they/she is aware of this yet they continue having paying tenants in that building(!) They stated that they are aware that the building is notoriously leaky--- but I never received a call or an offer to move my belongings to a non-leaking unit which one would think is the minimal thing a storage facility should do when they have a defective roof and leak problem. This facility is deplorable; shoddy/terrible business practices, utterly unconcerned with customer service. I am a working professional, and have been a paying customer (of 2 units) for over 5 years and all of my possessions were ruined over the past 3 months when the J building leaked so badly that my things became wet, moldy, and totally ruined. When I reported it and showed staff (documented it): and to my dismay, management and staff were 100% nonchalant, and informed me they know that building leaks, and then never apologized. They just let me cancel my unit and let me move out: no apology no "sorry what can we do to make this better", no reimbursement. I am pursuing this matter legally at this point. read more

Few days after I moved in, my stuff was wiped out. Extra space claimed they had been calling me, but only left me an email a week after the incident. Rather than checking various cameras in the area, they only looked at the camera in front of my unit and because I didn't park right in front, they claimed they didn't see me on footage. The new person working there is literally horrible. She is unprofessional and had the audacity to hang up on me after messing up and cutting me off a bunch. Makes it seem like they're the ones to blame for my missing stuff. In general, if you're thinking of storage, this place is NOT the place to trust. With such flawed security, it's appalling how this place still exists. read more

Rates almost doubled in two years. They lure you in with low rates, but then keep raising them and raising them and raising them.

DO NOT store your stuff here! Not one encounter with the on site or call center staff was professional or positive. The staff is dishonest, rude and disrespectful and they don't know their own policies. They absolutely price gouge. Our 4x8 storage unit started at $57 a few years ago and is now $162. They don't call back or answer the phone on site. I've called multiple times this week just trying to speak to a human and I either get someone in some other city who says they will send a message to my local store or I get caught in a phone loop that just sends me back to their phone tree. When I finally spoke to the manager after 5 days of calling she was uninterested in helping or even listening to my story. Because of their incompetence and inability to get back to me in a timely manner I have to pay for an extra month. Had they just answered the phone and given me the correct information I wouldn't be out $162. Save yourself time, money and energy and go somewhere where they actually provide a good service and care about their customers. read more

My opinions of Extra Space Storage are of two different strands: First, the good. The customer service here was really good, from the time I signed up for the storage locker, to the time someone tried to break in (see below), to canceling it when I no longer needed to store anything. The price was decent, though there was a $10/month insurance charge I didn't know about upfront that apparently is not optional. Now the bad. This was the first time I ever used storage, and walking away from my unit after I left all my stuff inside, I thought to myself, "Wow, I'm really uneasy leaving all of my stuff in this room that's only protected by this lock I brought myself, but it must be fine because that's how this works." I also figured that if there was a certain kind of lock to use, they would have told me; I confirmed this by looking at other units by mine and seeing that all kinds of locks were used. I was WRONG -- USE a FANCY "DISC" LOCK (google it) to protect your stuff. When I went to get my stuff after being away from CA for three months, I couldn't get the lock open and it clearly had been tampered with. I had used a standard dial lock, which apparently was a bad idea; after I saw that someone had tried to break the lock, I went and looked at other lockers in the unit that had similar locks, and it looked like they had also been tampered with. There weren't very dial locks , either; most people had disc locks, something that must have escaped me when I did my cursory inspection a few months earlier. This left me in a bind: I didn't want to cut the lock because I figured they would use that as grounds to deny my insurance claim (google tells me that the insurance company only serves Extra Space Storage and denies claims left and right), but I wanted to get in there and get my stuff out in case the would-be thief came back. I decided just to leave it until the office was open (I was there on a Saturday evening after the office closed) and when I did, the employee accompanied me to the locker and by then the lock was completely broken and just opened right up. Amazingly, nothing was stolen ( no idea why someone broke my lock and took nothing) but the employee said that they had a lot of thefts recently. Moral of the story: this seems like a decent place to store your stuff, just make sure you use the beefiest disc lock you can find. read more

Update: 6 months later. Moved everything out of storage and into a new apartment. I showed up at the office on the 3rd of the month, and mentioned that I had moved out on the first and wanted to cancel the rental. Although I assumed I would be charged at least for a partial month, they refunded the entire month. No coaxing was required, even though they were within their rights to charge me for the whole month. Very friendly. I also appreciate the very reasonable access hours. read more

My storage unit was burglarized, none of the employees showed any compassion or concern. I'm positive it was an inside job. They claim to do lock checks daily but left my storage open for five days. The day I was robbed is the day they contacted me. Since then no managers will return my calls they won't even speak with me honestly when I pop up. No one wants to investigate it. Police officers were there for 2 other robberies. Do not trust these employees they are way to nonchalant to not be guilty. They are now forcing me to get a lawsuit going. Thousands of dollars of merchandise stolen along with my identity. They are purposely avoiding me because they know they are accountable for leaving my storage open for 5 days. Several employees acted as if it doesn't matter. They failed me by not doing lock checks and they won't even go over camera footage. The employees are doing these robberies it's not coincidence that their were several after mine. Don't trust this facility they are ok with your belongings being stolen and avoiding you after it happens. No one will call or even pretend to care. My only option is to move my things spend more money and sue. Someone has to be arrested they knew for 5 days and said nothing until I was robbed. Very unprofessional. No one could tell me anything valid they kept redirecting me and refused to give me district managers info. When I pop up they pretend no one is the manager. Police even disclosed to me that they never report these thefts we do. They also stated that if they aren't a part of it they would assist properly. They just offered me to move my things how convienient. No cameras in the inside the employees know that. read more

I was paying for a storage unit at AAAAA Self Storage when Extra Space Storage bought them out. I paid for a unit for an additional 5 years at Extra Space until I found a big enough space in Berkeley to move my stuff into. Yes it took that long. So I closed my account with Extra Space. I returned after a few years last summer, 2016, and asked to open a small unit. The woman at the counter looked at me with hard, dull, resentful eyes as though she were already bored with me, thought I was an idiot, and was giving her a headache, and said I needed to buy a space online. They didn't sell spaces in the store. I asked if she had a printout of sizing and prices. She again paused and looked at me with the same expression, nothing but hate, said no, she didn't, and turned her back to me to be ignored until I left. Sure! An eBay-type storage system? Sure! A rude-ass sales girl (if you don't sell anything why does your position exist?). Sure! I find it funny the culture of business in the Bay Area has turned into, "You take care of me first, then I might take care of you, barely, and with tons of animosity." This is immature, bratty, and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy that if you think your customers are shit, the customers you get will only be shit. Am I wrong? So because I was a loyal customer before you even existed, and you were still willing to throw me under the bus, I am now throwing you under the bus. Your welcome. Perhaps the owners and service people are from New York or L.A.? FYI no one in Berkeley wants people from New York or L.A. in Berkeley. So I, in turn, invite YOU to leave. I personally feel bored, resentful, and just ill whenever I pass you guys on Cedar. Once your business eats it, I hope it's for good. read more

I have been meaning to write this review for at least a week now. I cannot tell you how helpful the folks at Extra Space Storage were. First, they presented me with one of their promotions (without my asking) that set me up with a larger unit than I was initially looking at with the first month free of charge. I only had to pay for move-in cost ($30) for a very large unit. Even though they knew that I was staying for only one month, I was still able to take advantage of this deal. This is by far the most inexpensive storage unit, I've ever had. Furthermore, when they were having trouble with the computer, Ron set me up with a larger storage unit (that did not have the promotion) and gave me the first month free anyways. He also specifically found me a unit with a larger door, so I would have an easier time moving the furniture into it. This made the entire process so much nicer. Ron was wonderful to interact with and very considerate. I highly recommend him and Extra Storage Space in Berkeley. read more

Wow! How refreshing to experience such warm, friendly, professional customer service!!!!! I was impressed by the entire staff. From the moment we entered the lobby... smiles, eye contact, a greeting and introduction. We got personal service that surpassed my expectations ... We originally found this place online and there was an internet special with a discount. We were given the internet discount even without reserving it online! The spaces are clean and easily accessible and they even have a cool forklift thingy that helped make this THE EASIEST MOVE EVER!!!!!!!! At the end of the day we thought about how effortless and simply the wonderful staff made our overall experience. We recommend Extra Space Storage to anyone looking for a storage unit. A little disappointed that with some of the policies the storage place has. I vacated the storage early and was sent notification that I had vacated storage, but they were unwilling to do a partial refund of my fees. I was told unfortunately I have the storage until next month. I think that is a waste when the storage could be rented out to someone else. read more

I want to reiterate the low-star reviews here, primarily based on their price-jacking and hidden fees. Whatever you are quoted on their website, add a $15 or so charge for "insurance," which is required. If you have to get a storage space, do yourself a favor, go online and find a real insurance company to get a policy from, for about $5. After renting space from them for a few months, my monthly fee went up nearly 20%. (And based on reviews here, it will again go up in another few months.) Why is this legal? I wasn't even notified of the rent hike. Be aware there's a homeless encampment across the street, and a transitional housing place for homeless right next door. The street is filthy with trash. Customer service is of course wonderful when you first go in. After that, it's like pulling teeth to get them to return your call. My experience with multiple storage facilities in the East Bay is that smiling and being nice to customers is common and easy. You're handing them your money in return for very little; of course they're nice! (Until you're on their hook.) read more

If this place is closed, good riddance. My storage unit was broken into and they cleared out $2500 worth of stuff- conveniently the same value of the insurance coverage I got through them. They didn't notify me of the theft when it happened (my housemate found out a week later when she went to check on my stuff and found the lock had been changed). They didn't answer any of my emails or phone calls about the theft, and refused to supply photos of the door that was apparently damaged. The policeman investigating my case said it reaked of an inside job. When my policy didn't cover one of the items, it was conveniently "found" up on their premise a week later. read more

How bad could it be? Well... I've filed a fraud report with Mastercard. After 5 months, rent was increased significantly, (What?) and they simply charged the higher amount to the automated payment system. Yes, they charged a higher amount than I had approved, without notice. Email asking for information about what was happening was ignored by the business. When I went in person to protest, I was told a "postcard" had been mailed. I pointed out that that I had not authorized the higher payment, and their claim of "authorization" was comically unverifiable. Silence from the poor person at the counter, who no doubt suffers from a lot of angry customers. Avoid at all costs. read more

Worst storage experience in my life!! Read all the one star reviews. They are all true. There is no service here. There is plenty of self-manufactured confusion - all rigged so you pay more. I would never, never recommend anyone store here. There are cheaper and better places. This place is so poorly managed, it is a wonder it functions. For starters, their "receipts" are very confusing. And their electronic administration system is a farce. No company worth its salt has such an arcane system. Some big issues: 1.) Constant threats to auction your contents off - even though there are clear legal guidelines that a company like this has to follow. They go buy their own internal calendar. They get so excited when they get to auction off storage spaces - something like going in for a kill. I hate to see such glee taken to hurt others. This could be expressed more professionally, and more importantly, humanely. 2.) Most units on ground floor leak - some from blow under from rainy days, some from units above. I always got: We'll get someone out right away, but then no action. 3.) First month I moved in they said I had not paid my bill. This was blatantly untrue. I had just moved in one one-month free offer and was in a difficult position to move out over their treatment of this non-issue. Extra Space is rapacious in terms of doing anything they can to harass renter and increase fees. 4.) Units are filthy. Go to Public Storage to see what clean units look like. Wish I had. 5.) The staff is nice but the manager is Basil Fawlty with no humor; he is not friendly, does not follow through on things he says he is going to do; doesn't apologize for his convenient memory lapses, and runs the place like Hitler. I can't imagine why the company keeps him. 6.) The staff is understanding, but the manager administers the place by fear. Whatever the staff tells you, he will contradict. For an idea of how this place is run note that the admin offices were redone, but nothing was done to clean up units, fix the curbing that makes a very dangerous traffic corner even more dangerous. (This would require that they lay a drainpipe over the street drain so that cars can get in and out without thumping their undercarriage.) I would never recommend this place to anyone. Use at your peril. BEWARE! Anything parked on the property is charged a storage rate - unless you are an old duffer with a broken down auto and living out of your unit. read more

Horrible customer service. They were really friendly in my initial contact with them and they had good rates, but when I made a deposit to hold the space and cancelled the space afterwards, they claimed to have refunded my deposit. I called twice to confirm this and they never issued a refund. Not sure if this was a mistake or their way of making extra money, but after 2 times calling them you think they would've figured it out. Will not do business with them in the future because of this. read more

I reserved a unit on line and was surprised to find when I signed the agreement in the office that there was a mandatory $13/month insurance charge. This is NOT on the web site. The units are more expensive than average (first month was $154 for a 6x6!) but I wanted the convenience of a nearby unit. I moved my possessions to CSI Mini Storage this month and recommend them instead. CSI will move your stuff for free and charges 1/2 what Extra Storage Space charges. read more

Extra Space Storage has an accessible location, great hours, good prices, and an awesome staff. (They were having lunch when I got there, and they fed me! Where else do you get that kind of service?). They were able to give me a major discount on my space, and the space is clean and accessible. I would definitely recommend them. read more
